I have a 11 MDX Adv+Ent with +150,000 miles. My top 5 complaints are: 1. city mpgs of 14-16 2. lack of engine choices, wouldn't mind getting 14-16 mpgs with more power on tap 3. poor back up lights and rear camera low quality 4. more leg room/seat travel (6'3") 5. road/wind noise

I have an '02 MDX that I bought at an auction a few years ago. It had 260K miles on it then, and is at 298K miles now. Aside from ordinary repairs/maintenance, it has been excellent. My only real complaint is that it gets rather poor fuel mileage.

i own a 06 since it came out bought it 00 miles and runs great today 2021... have no major problems with it.. my only complaint for acura is that they make them with no working space... it sucks to remove an alternator... belts etc... other than that its a great vehicle .. i just bought me the 2020 version and love it even more .... great on snow by the way

My main concern is the timing belt instead of timing chain use. Driving lights should be placed on the hood area not the bottom with fogs. I drive my 09 gently but have pushed it on curvy roads like a Sportster, it can handle it. The BT, navigation & back up cam is out of date so i plan on installing Apple Play. I use a mix of 89 + premium and it runs smoothly with good pick up.

My wife and I purchased a 2012 MDX with the Tech package new and it now has 74K miles. Both our third row seat latches have broken. You can still put the seats up and down, but the latches no longer will stay flush with the floor when the seats are down. The backup camera image is OK in the light of day, but is almost completely useless after dark. Even a bright green lawn appears to be light brown when viewed in the daylight. The original Michelin tires lasted for 55K miles but were incredibly noisy. I replaced them with a set of Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia tires, and have been very pleased with them so far. They ride and corner well and are very quiet. I would also be willing to give up a few horsepower to occasionally run on regular or mid-grade gasoline and agree that the vehicle would benefit from more low end torque. Even given all the above, I am very happy with the vehicle and hope to drive it for many more years.

Thanks for sharing! First time I hear about latches issues. My 2008 is going on 160K miles now and haven’t had that problem. As for the camera, I’ve heard that the camera is actually worse for 2010+ models for some reason. Again, not an issue on my 2008. For the tires - what size tires did you use? My 18” OEM Michelins are extremely quiet! I wonder if the 19” might be different. Anyway, glad you’re still enjoying it despite some issues!

Weird! I’ve had the same size since 2015 (40K miles so far, good for another season) and they are super quiet. In fact, when I put them instead of the previous Goodyear Eagle tires that were on the car from the previous owner, I wash shocked how much quieter the car became.

i have a 2012 mdx also and i agree the backup camera is just trash at night time. but nonetheless the power and drive experience is excellent. good to hear about the tires because im thinking of replacing the stock michelin's soon and they are pretty noisy

raekwonyaeyo I have MDX 2010 and I think it’s same for all 2nd gen, the only fuel to use is 91 octane which is required for this car you can use 87 or 89 octane but add octane booster to it you can find them in gas stations or Canadian tire etc.

Nitpick? Dude, it’s just a youtube video, don’t take it too seriously. And I’ve never said I was worried about fuel economy, I just suggested that it would be great if there were engine options as well as regural gas option, just like there is on many other luxury brand vehicles. The only real complain is number 5 which is requiring premium gasoline. Gas prices are expensive already even for the non premium gas.

my 2013 MDX Elite . exceeded oil consumption . Beware . make sure it was fix before purchased . i would use bigger engine if that was an option too and better brakes also air suspension

car air suspensions are usually built to require priceless maintenance to the point "magneticly tuned dampers" is a much more cost effective solution

I don't have MDX, but in the example of my RL, most people may need to remove front bumper, the headlight to replace low beam bulb(recently replaced the bulb). Also to replace some license plate bulbs, the trunk trim needs to be removed(one bulb is out at the moment). Hazard/emergency light bulb is blown and in order to replace it, the center console needs to be removed!(not doing that)

My '08 MDX was going to be paid off this July. Last month, while going over an overpass, a car came into my view heading straight for the left concrete wall, bounced off then hit me, and sent me into the other concrete wall. We thought we were going to go over and plunge into the highway below. The car held up like a tank, watched all the air bags deploy in what seemed like slow motion. (My son, in the back, said his head was about to go through the window but the side air bags came down and protected him). Car was a total loss, and I wasn't ready to say goodbye to it! Anyway, I'm shopping for another MDX. Though I am miffed about having to start over with a car payment. I was going to run that car into the ground.

@@AcuraAddicted sure you can share the story. Unfortunately, insurance didn't give me enough to buy the same MDX with the same mileage. Also, used cars are a bit overpriced ATM due to car shortage (seems everything is experiencing a shortage in 2021). I am looking at getting a 2013 with lower mileage. The 2014s look nice, but the price jump to the refresh is a steep one.

In my opinion, there's 2 common problem of burning oil of any type / brand of engine. They install a piston rings either in the lower, mid, upper part from the original engine that cause burning oil, that one of the main problem. 2. By using recommendations engine oil either regular or synthetic one the main cause of burning engine oil, if you change your engine oil and filter more than 5,000 km or 3,000 miles everytime you change it, you start burning oil, before 100,000 or more km / miles You have to change engine. Or avoid it do an engine flush to take out all dirt builds in the engine. To manny Japanese Vichecles change there engine. I'm my 1996 toyota Corrolla Almost 600,000 km I used Zmax for engine treatment / flush. How to use it effectively. Start engine until reach normal temperature, then add Zmax into your engine oil while engine still running, then drive for 10 minutes or more. While driving the Zmax eat all your dirt in the engine, before you reach 3,000 miles or 5,000 km or you notice your car hard to accelerate a little or noise during acceleration or check your engine dip stick its dirty/ to dark replace your engine oil. I used this product for 22 years in Canada you can buy in Canadian tire in USA buy online. Its effective on my 2005 honda odyssey and 2011 acura mdx mo more burning oil. And my 2011 chevy traverse need to replace timing chain cost 3,500 to 4,500 dollars, I used this product everything is normal I save money and engine compression accurate fast than before.

I agree with you about the lack of engine and brake options. #6 Center console leather easily tears. #7 Active shock replacement is extremely expensive. #8 Small to nonexistent performance aftermarket.

+Shawn Sejera Thanks for your feedback! My centre console didn't tear, but leather is starting to come off (glue has all dried out, given 9 years), so that's something I will be addressing. As for active shocks, totally! Good thing you can replace them with regular ones. And yes, surprisingly, quality aftermarket parts are almost nonexistent. I'm glad the original parts are not much more expensive than regular Honda parts, though. Plus I have a 15% discount for original parts.

If you mean the active dampers - yes, they are about twice more expensive than the regular ones. That’s a trade off for a more comfortable or sportier ride depending on your needs.

Another fantastic video, Bogdan. I appreciate that you’re objective. The big item of dislike I have is with the Bluetooth, which as I understand has a class action lawsuit. The battery drain is from BT is common and usually it means the owner is forced to unplug the BT altogether. Not practical.

I know this is a 2008 but you wouldn't happen to know if Honda uses the same 6 speed transmission in the Odyssey as in the MDX? Honda tends to use the same parts in all their vehicles and the Odyssey and MDX were made on similar platforms but MDX 6 speed shifts sooooo much smoother than my odysseys 6 speed. 🤷‍♂️ It's a 2012 Odyssey elite that I have by the way :)

Hey! 2007-2009 MDX has the same 5 speed as your Odyssey (and up to 2013). Then in 2014 MDX has the same transmission as Odyssey (9 speed ZF). But the six speed transmission that was used in 2010-2013 MDX was not dhared with Odyssey (only with ZDX, RDX, TL, RL, Pilot and Ridgeline).

The reason why I ask is because they don't don't perform the same so I was starting think the MDX had some different modifications to it or something?? @@fortunatedad7695 Looks like you are right! I researched it further and found that there were 6-speed (BYKA) transmissions for 2012 Elite and Touring trims. Interesting! The 2010-2013 MDXs transmission are different (MT4A). I'm pretty sure they are very similar. Even looking at transmission parts, they look very close, very slightly different part numbers.

Hello, I have a problem, my acura mdx advance 2011, a fuse was blown, this when it was turned on, it only lasted 20 seconds and it turned off, when reviewing the cause we found a damaged fuse, we replaced it and when it started again, it started well , only when you turn it off and remove the key from the ignition switch, the dashboard stays on, as well as you close indicator lights that were not turned on before, just like the door locks were left open or close, I would like to know your opinion about it. .. Hi. If your car keeps blowing fuses, there’s an electrical issue with the load on that circuit. What fuse was blown? Does the car “go to sleep” when you lock it using the remote?

There's no mechanical problem associated with using regular unleaded. There is only a minor drop in power because of the lower octane rating.

Wrong. Some engines have higher compression and can preignite lower octane fuels. This is often "pinging", or "knocking". The fuel ignites prior to the spark plug firing, causing potential engine damage.

Is the Acura 3.5 engine much different than the Honda Pilot engine? Honda does not require premium fuel.

The MDX in the video has a 3.7L J37A engine, which is, of course, different from the Pilot 3.5. I wouldn’t say it’s very different, but it certainly is, and it requires Premium fuel according to the manufacturer.

Sounds like a heat issue anything above 190 degrees nothing holds up. I have good luck with the Mobil 1 0w40. Oil cooler may help.

Speaking of the Active dampening sport/comfort suspension on my 08 mdx. If it ever goes bad in the future it’s a $2k replacement job… which reminds me do you think they will last longer if I’m on sport mode majority of the time or does it not matter ?

I'm not an engineer, so I do not know exactly the reason for the ADS damper failures, but I don't think the failure happens faster in either mode.

Which 2009 MDX model is the best "maintenance and reliability"?

All of the second gen is essentially the same car with extra features in higher trims, so basic reliability will be the same. Of course, base would be the most reliable of all the trims as it has lesser amount of technology, so less room for failure. Tech would be the second reliable one as it has more technology but does not have adaptive dampers. Sport/Elite is the least reliable because of the adaptive dampers and auto leveling headlights, although you can install regular dampers when the adaptive ones fail.

I just bought a 2011 with a 118 thousand miles. Before I could put 700 miles on it, the engine started making this noise like a paint can rattling when you start it then when I'm driving even at low rpm. Then finally it stalled on me twice. No codes, Dealership has no idea.

Some of them are the same, some are gone (it’s a much quieter cabin in the third gen, for example).

Consider proper diagnostics. Disabled SH-AWD usually means there is a different issue and car disables it just in case. It could even be low battery / bad alternator.

You’re expecting German manufacturer qualities on a Japanese vehicle. Honda is very conservative and practical in nature. They do not produce a performance line like Mercedes (AMG), BMW (M), and Audi (RS). Honda/Acura focuses mostly on simplicity, efficiency, and reliability.

I have a 08 mdx. If you bought this car without prior knowledge of the premium gas that’s solely on you . Also air suspension . Come on the oem suspension is more than adequate. That leads me to ask are you planning on taking sharp corners at high speeds in a SUV. The brakes also again it’s a SUV . If you want to really push a Acura get a sedan or coupe not a family SUV. Other than that it’s a great SUV that is not your typical boring SUV

Um. No, I haven't bought this car without prior knowledge of the premium gas and I have no problem with it: I use AKI 93 exclusively for it. This, along with other "complaints" are just mere observations of how it could be better, that's all. It's still my favourite car, 10 years later. Cheers!

Is there any way to restore the headlights? Not the outside lens but the lens in side the light assembly. Mine looks like a burnt flash bulb. Replacing the light bulbs didn’t help at all. $500.00 apiece is a bit out of line. Thanks.

Yes, the first generation of MDX had issues in early 2000s, just like many Hondas and Acuras from those years. The second gen transmission is extremely solid. I haven't heard any major issues reported. There are 2007 and 2008 cars with over 300K miles on them with no transmission issues. The only thing that comes to mind is if the ATF is not regularly changed as it's supposed to (and ALWAYS use OEM fluid) with time the car might develop a noticeable bump when switching from 1 to 2 gear. This does not affect reliability and can usually be resolved by resuming regular service and by replacing transmission pressure switches (which are located outside and are pretty easy to swap).

Bagdan have you heard anything about popping Speakers on cold mornings ? my BT has been disconnected since years ago , but recently I had battery drained and I'm thinking is related to that . I would call that a complaint

Ok, so that might be related to the audio unit CD changer. I had a similar issue as well. And it also drained the battery. Very easy to diagnose - you get into the car and lock yourself in using your keyfob (not the door controls). The lights should dim and the car should lock. After that if you have this issue, you'll keep hearing the CD changer crackling sounds (as if it's trying to shuffle discs). What worked for me was getting all of the discs out and leaving the CD changer empty for a couple of days. That resolved the issue and I since got a couple of discs back in, but never had the issue anymore. See if you can reproduce this.

Hey EndoftheRd, After many hours of research and electrical know-how I found the bluetooth module in the center console armrest to be the culprit. It gets condensate from the AC and gets ruined. Remove the plug to module and problem resolved!

Hi Bogdan, I average 12 mpg on my 2009 MDX. I have asked my technician to check throttle valve and oxygen sensors and nothing seems to be wrong with them. Why do you think I'm getting this bad mileage?

Hi Mike. Besides a tuneup and mechanical condition, there are a lot of factors that go into your mileage. But mostly it's the driving behaviour, amount of full stops and nature of traffic. For example, if you drive in heavy city traffic with frequent stops and a lot of stop lights and like to accelerate rapidly, this mileage seems about right. If you are a relatively conservative driver like myself and drive a mix of city and highways with few stops and not much of a heavy traffic, you should be getting around 17-19 MPG on average. Here are the main chemical, mechanical and electrical things that affect your mileage: gas quality, oil quality, spark plugs, seized brake calipers and possibly even accessory pulleys (AC, etc).

Don’t buy spark plugs from Amazon. Get them from a reliable parts supplier. If you have official Honda dealerships in your country, get spark plugs from them.

Tires is a big factor when it comes to road noise. But you can only go so far before you need to further insulate the cabin.

Probably a faulty level sensor. Does it show the level at all?

@@AcuraAddicted thanks for your quick response. Yes it shows the level but no warning light or audible warning of any kind. I on purpose tried to run the fuel all the way to as low as where I have only 10 kms of fuel left but no warning pops up.

SH-AWD is awesome in any type of snow. You feel very as confident on packed snow, icy roads as in deep (3 feet deep is the deepest I went through) snow. Only 2010-2013 cars are prone to oil consumption due to unfortunate update in piston rings. 2007-2009 cars are not affected (mine is 2008).

It’s very subjective. I don’t experience any sluggishness or slowness. When I need power instantly, I press the accelerator fully to the floor and the car basically jumps forward with an extremely satisfying growl.

If you mean outputting your phone to the central screen on a Tech/Sport/Elite, IMO that is not feasible. There are modules that implement Apple Car Play / Android Auto, or you can get a custom output, but those solutions are all in the excess of USD 800+ and you will still have the low resolution native MDX nav screen. Watching movies on it? Horrible, much better, easier and simpler to watch movies on an inexpensive modern tablet which you probably already have. GPS would be nice, but I find that my iPhone mounted just on the right of the steering wheel on a magnetic mount works just fine. As for the music, you can buy a $20 BT adapter and route it to your audio to play music wirelessly.

No difference in performance, the engine is almost identical. The 2010+ has paddle shifters and Sport mode for the gears, has 6 speed transmission. Reliability wise 2007-2009 is better because it does not have the Acura admitted oil burning issues due to updated piston rings.

Regular gas is fine. Knock sensors are there to protect the engine. The only downfall is lower performance. Air suspension is nice but is has its problems. Not too reliable and gets expensive once the miles start adding up.

My 2011 MDX base pops a few of these messages intermittently: Check Trailer Stability Assist, Check VSA, Check ABS System, Check SH-AWD system, and sometimes also check TPSM system. During this, the MDX will only show it’s using front wheel drive. Brake lights work fine, checked fuses, good. Tire air pressure good. Has anyone had this problem before and know of a fix for it?

The first and most obvious - power issues. Start with checking the battery - the load test is free at most shops. If the battery is fine, make sure the alternator is not bad. If that's fine, it might be the ground cable issue. Battery issues causes the car to go into "limp mode" by throwing all power adjacent systems you mentioned.

I got the problem with my MDX fixed. It turned out to be a bad brake light switch (green switch located under brake pedal). The way I figured out it was that. When I step on the brake to shift from park to drive, I had some trouble, won’t shift. Everything fixed now by replacing the switch.

2011 here, I got it with 75k miles and it used to burn 1 - 1.5 quarts per 1000 miles. I changed the PCV valve and switched to pennzoil platinum syntheic oil 5w20. For whatever reason this engine would eat Mobil 1 like crazy. If I remember correctly they changed the piston design in 2010-2013 and the oil control rings can get jammed up with carbon. Anyways pennzoil, pcv valve change helped but it still burns oil to a lesser extent. I received a possible warranty extension maybe 2 months ago acknowledging oil consumption problems. So to qualify I need to take to a dealership and they would perform an oil consumption test. I believe it covered 2007-2013 vehicles (including TL, RL, MDX) with the 3.7 but I'm in the US and there is a cutoff period I think September or October here.

Yes, it’s premium gas only. However it should not affect gas consumption significantly. But it is what the engine was tuned for and that’s what it expects. What are you getting on A and B? My figures are 10L/100 km (24 MPG) on highway and 15L/100 km (15 MPG) combined. I run AKI 93 gas.

You can run regular unleaded in the car adjustS. But on 2007 models and on the car is such a junk that you have to run premium it won’t damage the engine it’s just G tunes and has no performance you can’t even feel 300 hp because the vehicle is such a tank and I would never think of taking that vehicle off pavement. It’s horrible in the snow, you can’t compare the all-wheel-drive MDX in the first generation with vtm4 versus the all-wheel-drive in the 2007 and on supra handling all wheel drive is terrible in the snow. I know from experience and went back and purchased a first generation MDX . I have have owned three first generation MDX. One I bought new in 2005 and I vond two 2006 and I currently drive a 2006 MDX and there’s nothing out there. I would spend any money on. I’ll be sad when it’s time to replace this vehicle I’m going to look for another 2006 if I can find a clean one down south, they’re getting harder and harder to find used. Everything on mine works. I put 340,000 miles on my 2005 MDX just did regular maintenance my second MDX had well over 200,000 and my current MDX 2006 has 206,000 miles and I’m just getting ready to have my second tuneup done to it. They never should’ve stopped making the first generation MDX after 2006 the MDX is junk… The brakes are fine you are not driving a NASCAR… The 3.7 V6 is an oil burner and you don’t feel the power because the vehicle is such a tank, nothing better than the 3.5 V6 in the original MDX generation 2001 to 2006 I can find 20 other reasons why this car named the MDX 2007 and on including current models is nothing like how Acura used to make cars I can attest from experience …a lot of experience. In 2007 they should’ve stopped the MDX name and never should’ve put it on those junk cars that they make from 2007 to 2023

They most certainly do not have a problem with transmissions. All second gen (2007-2009 5speed and 2010-2013 6speed) is a solid transmission which, when surviced properly, will hold up indefinitely. I'm at 300K kms (187K miles) and do not have any transmission issues.

My MDX shakes and vibrates at 110 to 120 kmh. I've changed the tires, balanced the tires on 3 seperate occassions and had the wheel alignment done. Like many other mdx drivers i am extremely dissatisfied with this issue.

+Adnan Chaudhari That's too bad! Any vibrations above 100 kmh are usually a balancing issue, believe me, I've had my tires rebalanced four times before the vibration was gone. However if vibration happens for you only in a specific speed range, it might not be related to tires. You mentioned you had the alignment done, what are the results? Is everything in the norm? If yes, I would suggest having your wheel hubs and half shafts checked.

Hello Bagdon, thanks for the quick response. The alignment was done and all wheels were corrected. After the alignment i had the balancing done on three seperate times. I will check the wheel hubs as recommended. If you have time i recommend you visit the mdxer forum. In the forum search bar look up "shaking and vibration". You will be amazed by how many Acura mdx owners are experiencing this issue.

We must have a different comfort level and/or definition. I’m 4 inches shorter than you and there’s no way extra 4 inches make much of a difference even if all of them were in your legs. I’ve driven for Uber for 1.5 years and I’ve had all sorts of people riding with me, including really tall fellows like yourself. Never once I had any complaints or observed them struggling either in the front or in the second row. You must truly be an exception, never in my entire ownership of this car since 2011 have I heard a similar complaint from anyone. At all.

Road noise #1 complaint!! Its just terrible.#2 Loosy goosy steering( though on 2007 and 08 its better). #3 keeping vehicle in lane is a full time job.(yes,i took it to acura dealer exactly 3 times,did alignment and balancing 3 times,drove it on highway with tech 3 times- verdict "its just how it drives"!) So after 4 years was done with it.

Road noise - agree 100%, sound deadening could me much better. No complaints about steering from me, all is good on my end. Same goes for handling - no issues with keeping it in lane whatsoever. I drive OEM sized wheels and tires, though. I’ve heard people putting 21” extra wide tires on it (can’t even imagine how harsh the ride becomes), so those will definitely be hard to keep in lane as most of the cars with big and wide tires.

LOL, what? There must be something wrong with your car. My combined(B) mileage is 19 MPG (mostly city driving, and I always do full stops on all stop signs and on red before turning right). When cruising on highway I get 26 MPG.

@@AcuraAddicted there are hundreds of thousand bad MDX full conceptions daily report online . go to any MDX online forms you will see this is a basic knowing issues throughout MDX community unlike you living under the Rock😂

Living under a rock? My car is 2008, it’s 12 years old, I’ve had it since 2011, so almost 10 years now. So I’ve had plenty of experience with it. Again, if your mileage is 10 mpg, something is wrong with your particular car.
