I have found that most "theme" chess sets have pieces that are not easily distinguished, making play difficult. The exception is a Medieval-theme set I was given in 1968 or 1969. A plastic set, it came from Sears.

I mean for people who are into art or very serious about the game it makes sense to get a high quality chess board, but for casual players who maybe have only gotten into the game, its better to simply go with a venyl chess board that most likely will not cost over 10 USD.

Licking my friends one isn't actually good for playing it's more just a decoration piece. I mean the board is cardboard The The pieces do look poor job of distinguishing one from the other because most of them are just dudes. It's super easy to forget which piece represents the actual chess pieces
