I promised myself I’d jump on the truck if I ever passed one on my daily walk. About a year ago I did and bought a screwdriver…Then the ‘Tik Tok pliers’ and now I’ve got about $500+ spent with him. A lot for a DIY guy but they are quality tools and - at the risk of sounding sad - makes me feel proud to own them. Grew up poor and if little me knew one day I’d have a box of Snap-On’s…
@autumn559218 күн бұрын
Absolutely agree. Most of my life, I have only had the money to buy what I need, barely saving enough to live, recently I started making a lot more money, and now I am proud to own, and be able to buy tools and nice clothes. Instead of buying 20-30 quid workboots that fall apart in no time, I can bought Thorogoods, and it brings a smile to my face every time I stop and think about it for a second. And tools, something as simple as a decent screwdriver or ratchet, the thought that you earned that, and you get to enjoy it, that feeling is practically priceless.

I own and use Snap-on daily. But with prices being very high for everything lately. I have been forced to buy and use other name (lifetime) guaranteed tools. The Icon wrench set i just bought was recently shown to be better then Snap-on. Would I be happier with Snappie, yes but for my truck toolbox. I rather not take a heavy loss if stolen or lost. I also have a great Snap-on truck guy. He really turns me on to a lot of special deals. Even trade ins, repo's, etc. Every little bit helps today. I really hope this country gets better soon. As I said that was my experience, it costs me $25.00 this was in the early 2000's. I had absolutely no issues with any of the dealer's. In fact they all were most helpful. So being specific is a plus 😊 Again thank you.

As a shop tech I will say the best thing you can do is keep some sort of payment plan going. I buy a lot of things outright but also if you trickle that $40 a week the guy has to comeback and it’s overall better for the route. Our Mac guy does the same thing. The business model is far more sustainable if all of your customers have to make payments weekly vs the big pop every two months waiting for a customer to save up for $300 sockets. Thats my opinion at least. And the payments are interest free. Capitol One can’t beat that.
@JohnC6862 ай бұрын
I never really thought of it this way, but it makes sense. As a DIY customer I would never expect a truck account to be an option. I just buy my stuff and get off the truck ASAP so he can move on to the next customer. But I would definitely like the option on more expensive purchases.
@andygilbert18772 ай бұрын
Good way to work it! I bought my boxes and then a roll cab like this. Waited for good deals then paid over 6 weeks interest free. This was when we were paid weekly, so a while ago now! 😂 But it avoided the temptation to go for a long term loan and pay interest.

I’m old, and I haven’t understood the Snap-On Truck business model for some time now, at least for the DIYer. It makes sense for mechanics, and maybe it made sense for DIYers years ago. Expensive tools because they are super high quality? OK. But a place of business run by individual owners on a truck that you have to track down not only buy, but to warranty? Weird, if not inconvenient for the DIYer. And dealing with a (sometimes cranky) truck owner for warranty shouldn’t have anything to do with whether you have bought from him before. Snap-On says their tools are warranted for life, so they should provide an easy way to use this warranty (think Tekton). And the truck never has everything in stock, but online usually does. I now live in the boondock mountains, so if I do need to purchase a Snap-On tool (or warranty it), I do it online. So much better. I only wish their free shipping threshold was lower. Same with Amsoil products. Online all the way instead of dealing with their (sometimes smarmy) distributors. All that being said, for those who want to go on a truck for the first time, I think Doc’s tips are good advice.

In the last month of a new aviation job, I have encountered our guy 3x. I was nervous of the simmenatics. I downloaded the app and looked up prices on the website for the things I needed. I had heard a truck may be a hair cheaper, but it's not..or ours isn't. I have ordered 2 things alread, not on the truck. However, I met our guy at a different business driving by and told him I was starting at the place and needed some things when he came next friday. I let him quote me some things others at my job had bought to include things like knipex and a streamlight. I knew he'd be way higher on them, and he was. The next week at my job I went out and picked the handful of things I was actually originally after or 80% of that quote. Following week my special order came in and monday my 2nd special order will be in. I still dont know all the ins and outs or what it's ok to ask about. I do know the 61cf duckbill and 808cf long nose mini diagonal cutters are a must for us.

That being said, I've had really bad dealers as well who made Craftsman look good. I have 100+ yr old Snap-on tools. Some of their tools are worth every penny. Many are not. Pick & choose what tools you get. You'll be glad you did. Don't be an asshole. No one makes the perfect tool line. Nor are we perfect customers. Find a good dealer & get what you need. No thanks. Back in the day the trucks were the only option, but times have changed. I’ll take Harbor Freights lifetime warranty over that overpriced business model. And for someone to suggest that folks get on a payment plan is absolutely absurd. Run from the Snap On truck - they drive around and put guys just starting out in debt. A debt that will snowball into thousands of dollars in a trade that doesn’t pay what it’s worth. I ask you - how many times have you actually broken a tool? And if you do - wouldn’t it be easier to drive over to harbor freight rather than hunt down the snap on truck? With all the other options out there these days, I don’t get ever having to pay those prices. For what? A name? You end up paying triple for a tool AND the two or three more you MAY need should that one break. But heck, maybe you’ll get a free shirt or hat letting everyone know you’re on a payment plan.
