Babel is so incredibly magical for me as someone who works in the modernday translation/interpretation industry, especially in trade. I'm lucky to be in a company that is based on ethics. History and power is so important. My heart soared with their love and I felt these characters so much I love how much this book teaches you about the opium wars (obviously its kind of her thing). Anyways, from a peer, a lover of languages and history and culture- fabulous job to R.F. Kuang.

I LOVE that you use the word "favorite" instead of "best," which I try to do myself. Definitely put a few of these on my Amazon wishlist---thanks!

Added a couple to my list :) I'm currently reading Babel and I LOVE it. You can tell R.F. Kuang did extensive research for it and that's almost the most impressive thing.

I was also surprised that Nettle & Bone ended up being in my top reads of 2022 despite being such a short book but the characters, the world, the writing, everything was *chef's kiss*

Hello! I know it would be hard but can you in your description add when you made vlogs about books you talk about Like in monthly wrap up videos, you can add the vlogs related to the books. I came here again to find the nettle and bone vlog video but only found this. It would be really fun, since I do watch many of your videos again and again. Especially when I am about to pick your recommendations and/or complete reading them.

I agree loved Nettle and Bone, Babel I loved the themes but i couldn't get on with the MC, i much preferred the side characters and wish we had a multiple POV book not just the interludes, I think that would have made it a new favourite if it had that, but overall a very good book

I read the way of kings last year . Needless to say : changed my life . Liked Sanderson before now I am a hardcore fan . I read half a soul and the beautiful ones upon yours truly‘s request ; I liked them both but was not blown away sadlyy expected a bit more because I eat regency romance up but the fantasy was missing for me. I was super blown away by Bone shard Daugher. Biggest surprise apart from Way of kings. Started Poppy war and magic ship series. Excellent but I need a lot space between chapters ( and myäqbe a comfort blanket or two)

I absolutely loved A River Enchanted. I am currently reading A Fire Endless. I also loved Nettle and Bone. However in searching for more similar books I feel like a lot of what the internet has to offer includes heavy romance. I'm fine with a sprinkling but I'm not looking for smut or characters being paralyzed by lust. Would love to get a fantasy book list (or recommendations in the comments) with whimsy and minimal romance.

A River Enchanted was a BOTM add on for me for January and I plan on adding the sequel next month. Once I have them both, I'll pick them up so I can read them back to back. Nettle & Bone was one of my favorite books last year. My husband likes to read, but doesn't read a lot and it was one of the few books he read last year and he loved it too. I have to say I'm really intrigued by The Foundry Trilogy.

I read Nettle & Bone on audio and I think it ruined it for me 😩😂 Audiobooks are finicky like that. So many way an audiobook can go wrong 😂😂😂😂 imo lol I think I would have loved it if I had read it instead of listened to it. Still a great book!! ❤️

I didn’t like Babel. I felt like I was being lectured by someone ten years younger than me about things I already agree with, and it feels really insincere for Kuang to be presenting this takedown of education and Oxford in particular when she recently paid Oxford $40,000 a year for an advanced degree.

Having read the forward I didn't feel that at all about oxford! I think she acknowledges it there enough for me. I am also a fellow translator though so my enamourment with her world was deeply personal. To each their own and it's clear you took time to think about this, valid take!
@BlueCoolOla
@BlueCoolOla Жыл бұрын
You're literally doing the "how can you want to make society better when you LIVE in a society, huh? I am very clever" meme right now. Oxford has an annual budget of 2 BILLION pounds, Kuang's 40k is a drop in the bucket for them. If anything is insincere here, it's your criticism. The fact that Kuang enjoyed her education there does not change the fact that the entire book is a huge takedown of Oxford as an institution. It's like saying "oh, you're American, you're not allowed to criticize anything about America because you benefit from the privileges it gives you every day".
@rachaelr7567
@rachaelr7567 Жыл бұрын
@@BlueCoolOla Except the book itself features a protagonist who pressures his colleagues (minorities and women) to forfeit their scholarships because he doesn’t think it’s enough to just be a good person. In other words, Robin, Griffin, and Victoire are the meme, not me. You also made this personal so bye.
@BlueCoolOla

@@rachaelr7567 ...did we read the same book? He didn't make them do anything, in fact he didn't tell them about the organization for the longest time BECAUSE he didn't want to take opportunities away from them. THEY decided that it's not good enough to just be a "good person" when they're contributing to an awful system of oppression. That's the point - they got lucky but everyone else still suffers. I think it's awesome that mainstream books are pushing for developing class consciousness like that.
