It's been a great year for figs here at govinda's garden. I have learned a lot this year, and got to taste some amazing fruits. I've compiled this list of five figs that really stood out, including my personal favorite fig. Enjoy!

Yeah, a lot of people are asking for cuttings. Hopefully I can get about 50 of them for next winter. I have 5 Euclids in pots and 1 in the ground, and a few rooted cuttings inside now (from thinner cuttings that I didn't want to sell to people). I'll keep yall posted here on youtube.

I am in Boston, zone 6B. My figs are in pots but I have a greenhouse. My best figs are: RdB, Florea, Hardy Chicago, Burgan uk, Campaniere, Longue d’Aout and Chios Yellow.

Excellent choices. I have experienced a few of those. RdB is one on my wanted list. And even though Chicago Hardy is very common, it’s still one of the best figs we can grow in our regions, in my opinion. Hard to beat a ripe Chicago Hardy!

Hello I’m in zone 6B here in central New Jersey.. have to say potted Violette de Bordeaux was the tastiest this year. I have a few in ground unknown adriatics along with a few unknown Greek varieties that were also delicious.

Great video. And I’d love to buy some of those varieties. The one think I wish you mentioned was which variety had breba. And I’m also curious where your number picks place of origin is? Did you ask the home owner if the owners before her were Italian or anything to that effect? It would be cool to find out where it’s from originally

Good description on your figs. I would be interested in cuttings possibly. Hearing you talk about low light and the fig doing well gives me hope. That is my one concern about where I live is very little areas with good sunshine. I'm trying to not invest a ton of money into them until I can find out if I'm able to grow them. Still waiting and hoping on my first cuttings to root. I'm excited for this next year.

@@govindasgarden No I don’t have any fruit trees yet. My house is surrounded by woods and we already have plenty of trees. The beauty of figs is I can plant in containers and move as needed to get sunlight. Also, considering taking some to my parents house to plant there. They have plenty of sun.

I'm in 8a SC. My top 4 figs were CDD Gegantina, White Madeira #1, Vasilika Sika, and Maltese Beauty. All in ground, the CDD was a plant purchased last winter, others were cuttings purchased last winter. Really interested in your new fig.

Thanks Andrew! Cuttings typically grow fruit the same year they start growing roots. So if you root them in the winter you will likely get fruit in the summer.

Sounds a great fig, would you be able to ship to the UK? It would probably have to be bare rooted or just a cutting. The varieties I grow are Brown turkey, Celeste , a variety that Queen Victoria grew in her garden on the Isle ofWight name unknown and a variety grown in the garden of William Willberforce of slavery abolition fame again name unknown. My location is Kingston upon Hull Yorkshire England.

Hi Janice. I love that you are growing figs over there in the UK, and it sounds like you have some with a rich history. Shipping to the UK would be relatively expensive, and I wouldn't feel great about the transit time, but if you are willing to take the risk and pay the additional shipping charges I would be open to it.

I would find the Ross Raddi interview with the owner of figBid, where he talks about the ficus variety he grafts onto in Florida in order to resist root-knot nematodes prevalent in the soil there. So it's recommended to learn to graft onto those if they'll be in-ground or at least get varieties claiming to be root-knot nematode resistant, and/or look up predators to root-knot nematodes and how to attract them, insect frass might be an option. If you're growing in pots you could do pretty much anything although you might search for varieties more suited to humidity/resist splitting in the rain, have a small eye etc.

I think you can send a sample of your tree to someone and they can look at it closer and tell you if it is in the named varieties or not if not then it could be recorded as you named it. University of California Irvin or LSU?

Sounds like you're going to run out of Euclid pretty soon. My daughter, son-in-law, and their baby just moved back here in UT from Asheville. I was out there a year ago April for their wedding. Also visited New Life Community Church. They love figs, so it would be cool if I could get that Euclid to grow especially for my kids. I just got into figs last year. I'll be cutting my Olympian if you don’t have one and would like to try it. God bless!

God bless! I drive by New Life quite often. I would love to help you add this one to your collection and get it growing in Utah. I just posted an update, but basically I am going to take as many quality cuttings as possible and make them available sometime in December. Olympian is a great fig! I have one in the ground and it's definitely one of the hardier varieties that I have experience with.

@govindasgarden I've also got a Desert King that I planted from a 5 gallon last May and it really took off. Do you have that? These are 2 I can definitely cut now. Not sure about the rest of mine (about 20-30 varieties). About the Euclid... probably best to call it Euclid Unk until you figure out if it truly is unique or not.

Hello young man, I went to Portugal 🇵🇹 for 1 week holiday and coming back to London in UK 🇬🇧 I brought 4 white Madeira cuttings and 12 black Madeira! I propagated them the 24 September 2023 and one thing I don’t understand is what I did with the white also did with the black! Now I have 4 white Madeira with big roots and leaves BUT The black looks brown like dead! What can I do with the black Madeira should I keep them or throw them in the dustbin! Any advice for anyone please 🙏? Thanks

It is not appropriate to just rename a tree. You did not say whether or not you even asked the owner if she knew the variety name of her tree. It is clearly an Adriatic type and most certainly already has a name. Renaming and spreading around the cuttings only adds more confusion to what already exists. This is an "unknown" tree, not a new variety. Renaming a tree goes against existing standard practice in the fig community because we end up with the same tree going by 50 different names.

@@lynettebee6045 that is very true, which is why the normal custom is to attach the word "unknown" either before or after. This is done to clarify that it is a 'found' fig and indicate that the true cultivar name is not known. Renaming and selling a found fig only multiplies confusion. This is why the practice is in place of adding "Unkown"
