Very good advice. Over the years I came to the conclusion that the diameter of the dial is also very important in determining the right size for a watch. If you compare two timepieces with identical case diameter, the one with the bigger dial is very likely to look bigger on your wrist. This is another reason why one should go for smaller diameters when buying a dress watch: Dress watches usually have rather thin bezels and large dials in relation to the diameter of the case. The colour of the dial is another important factor. Watches with bright coloured dials tend to look bigger on your wrist. Traditionally, dress watches tend to have bright coloured dials while sports watches tend to have dark coloured dials. So a 42 mm diver's watch with a black dial and a large bezel (and therefore relatively small dial) might look good on your wrist while a 41 mm dresswatch with a white dial might appear too big.

most underrated comment. Even Mr. TGV didnt mention this with "decades" of experience. But we got to know how important is a lug-to-lug not only diameter, wow something that a beginner would know after a week.

You have never steered me wrong and I have benefited greatly from your advice. I have 6.5" wrists and in the past I have stayed away from Diving watches and Pilots watches due to my wrist size. I discovered the Urban Gentry Channel about a month ago and after watching many of your videos, I bought a Seiko Alpinist SARBO17, a Glycine Combat Sub GL0281 and a Seiko Flight Master SNA411 and I am over the Moon with them. Thank you very much for educating me. I wish I had found your channel years ago.

One interesting thing i found on one of the forums is that not all, say, 7 inch wrists are the same. You can have a more round or more flat wrist, which in latter case will allow you to go for bigger sized watches.

I also learned that everyone who reviews watches has tiny wrists.
@stephenrhodes77589 жыл бұрын
I've actually found that the lug to lug width is more important to me than the diameter which has allowed me to go large on occasion. I'm typically a 41/42mm man but i have a couple of pilot's watches at 44mm that fit like a glove. I have 7 & 1/4" wrists so i'd still be able to pull them off but the smaller lug to lug certainly helps.

Having thinner wrists myself, I totally commiserate with that challenge. I started getting into watches during the big watch craze. Ironically it saved me a lot of $$$ by severely limiting my choices - 38mm or less - and gave me time for my preferences to develop. And now all these years later vintage sizing has come back around. In retrospect, the big watch fad was a blessing in disguise in my case.
@TKsheng8 жыл бұрын
What I always look at before buying a watch is the lug to lug measurement and height/thickness of the watch. Because if you have small wrists, any watch will look ridiculous if the length of the lug to lug is going to exceed the width span of your wrists. To me, lug design and curvature only applies after the lug to lug measurement is considered. There is no use for a lug that curves to hug the wrists when the lug is already protruding out from the width of the wrists, its like the watch's wearing you and not you wearing them. And I noticed one very important thing, leather straps and some rubber straps tend to flair out from the lugs when they are thick profiled near the lugs. So if you have small wrists, it's best to go for watches with leather or rubber straps that bend down straight from the lugs.

Excellent guidelines! Just to add on some points.. Dial color will affect watch size as well, black dial tends to look smaller compared to white or silver dial. A 36mm square watch case will wear bigger than a 36mm round case. I have a 29mm square white dial Nomos Tetra and it wear like a 34mm round watch on my wrist (7.25"). Thin bezel will also make the watch look bigger. Hope these info are useful. Great video TGV!

+POH TECK HIAN That's right, square or rectangular watches have completely different dimensions to circular watches for consideration. The bezel thickness, dial colour, and dial style will also make huge differences. The iconic example is the IWC Portuguese which is about 42mm, but because of its thin bezel and white dial, it looks huge and wears like a 45-46mm watch.

Another informative and well constructed video by TGV. I too have small wrists and have to make a lot of considerations regarding case sizes etc... I tend to purchase pieces within the 36mm to 40mm range depending on the style. However, as TGV explains the strap can make a huge difference on how the watch fits and appears on a wrist. My Seiko SKX009K2 is around 42mm but surprisingly wears smaller, I feel this is down to the design and size of the jubilee bracelet which comes standard. Swapping this out for the rubber strap makes the watch look and feel larger, also sitting much higher on the wrist.

Nice pointers. How about gold vs. steel? I wear a 41.5 mm stainless steel Omega Seamaster. I think that if I'm going to get a smaller, thinner dress watch, it should be gold. Nice breakdown and it makes perfect sense... Here is a trick. A nato band creates an illusion of being a smaller face on your wrist. My skx007 with the 2 straps under case "fattens" your wrist. The nylon isn't completely flat on your wrist and has some thickness around so it looks great on a smaller size wrist. My tag heuer link chronograph surprisingly has a smidge smaller case than my skx007 and has a metal bracelet but tag's face appears a little bit bigger on my wrist than skx007 with nato. Lug width is similar to skx007 too so that wasn't a factor. Nato band brings a little bulk around the top of the wrist and is creating an illusion...... I have 7 inch wrist and I was debating whether to buy Seiko Prospex Samurai (black) 44mm & with its larger lug width size than my SKX007 but I think I am going to pass. It looks too big on the wrist in the customer review pictures. I love the design though.

Some good advice there, but I would say trying on before you buy would be my top pointer. I only have a 7"wrist, but tool watch would be my genre. I have one 41mm watch and two 44mm. I feel that all three work well. People talk about watch sweet spots, and will say I'm a 38.5 man or a 39, perhaps a 41mm guy. I also noticed that the bracelet plays a important part on how big a watch looks, specially the endlinks. The planet ocean, for an example: the 42mm have the center endlink protruding and extending the "wingspan". By comparison, the last iteration has a pivoting center endlink that makes the watch look smaller and easier to wear. It is the same story with the vintage submariners with folded endlinks vs the nowadays solid endlinks.

The other day a friend commented on the DeVille, asking why I was wearing my wife's watch. Whatever. In 1974 I was comparing the Seiko Panda (41mm) and Bullhead (44mm). Anyway... love the channel. It's amazing the progression from your older videos. You've really found your feet now as a presenter. I'm looking at getting a new watch but I feel a bit left out with modern watch sizes. My wrists are not much over 6", maybe 6 1/8". Top side is about 50mm. I tried on a number of 40mm watches that all felt massive although I did try an Oris Artix which I thought would be massive at 42mm but actually wasn't too bad. Just shows it's not all about diameter. It would be good to know just how skinny your wrists are for comparison! Skinny is relative.

I absolutely agree with you on the lug to lug measurements and how the lugs are shaped, I've had to learn the hard way on that aspect. Also, the way the lugs are shaped where they meet the strap can affect the way a watch looks and feels, I am attracted to Omega because of the way their lugs taper at the strap vs. the chunky way a Rolex is in that area but its a personal preference because I have 16.75 cm wrists.

Great video! I have a 8 inch wrist (270lb powerlifter) yet wear an old 34mm gucci watch from the 80's my grandfather owned. Definitely don't need a large watch, but I can see the appeal of up to 45mm, I tried a Panerai luminor on last week (47mm)and couldn't believe how silly it looked, it is all personal preference though. I'm currently deciding on a Planet ocean but I can only find the 45.5mm to try on locally, I would love to hear from anyone who has tried on both for comparison.

I've figured out my wrist size, diameter-wise (8"), but how do you measure the width of your wrist? Where do you start and where do you end? In a sense, I've got the opposite problem about size that you have. One of my regular watches I wear on rotation is a Casio F-91W (the other one being a Duro), and on my 8" wrist, the 34mm watch looks almost tiny, but the face is so big in relation to its diameter, so I can still easily read it.

I agree with your ideas and comments about "what's good or correct for you is not necessarily good for me" therefore try before you buy. For example my Breget XX in Ti fits/ feels completely different then my SS version although they have the same exact dimensions, it's all about the material the watch is made from. My Frank Mulle Banker is in 18 Gold and I have one in SS on a alligator strap..... same watch and dimensions yet completely different feel. For my AP Royal Oak I have two different bands, one alligator and one Sting Ray which was made custom for me through Tourneau in NYC, again they wear completely differently. So something as simple as a leather band vs a alligator can give not only a very different appearance but feel as well. The weight of the watch is important too. I wouldn't want a small paperweight attached to my wrist while at a wedding wearing my Armani suit.......Hope that this just added to an already excellent presentation on what to look out for when buying your next time piece. Ciao, Rocco

Fantastic video TGV, long overdue! Funny when people wear these ridiculous dinner plates... a watch too large for your wrist will actually make your wrist look even smaller. I might add... not all wrist measurements are the same as the profile of people's wrist shapes can vary drastically. I measure about a 6 3/4 but much narrower top down than most people's wrists so I have to factor that in.

Great video TGV as always... This cleared a few wrong opinions I had with regard to bigger watches but as always the smaller dress watches hold true.

I would like to add that a outer bezel on a watch make a difference on how a watch looks and wears. A 42 .mm watch will look huge without a bezel to frame it. Small wrist dudes like myself can also get away with big ass diver watches such as a Seiko Tuna or Citizen Ecozilla due to their tiny lugs and wide straps.

Very informative TGV, Ive learned a lot from making expensive mistakes. All watches look bigger in the shops under the super bright lights so if possible I try to see if I can look nearer the door which can be dodgy in order to obtain natural light. Keep up the great videos

I, too, have very thin wrists and so the Rolex Daytona is the perfect watch for me. Try before buying is the best advice.

Great content TGV, not one for collecting luxury watches, however I find them quite nice. The way you present luxury watches shows you have a passion for it and respect your time pieces. Subscribed!

I found a "deal" from a website that sells all sorts of clothing and accessories, I bought a Stahlbergh Varberg II watch. I honestly bought it because I did like the look and I also do like Swedish brands. I do however know nothing of watches, I do have a simple black swatch that I always wear. Do you know if this watch is considered "good"? I do like the way is wears on my wrist, the stated full price is something I would never buy for myself, but it was a large reduction for several models of watches of this particular brand and I liked this one when I saw it. I totally agree with your thoughts on the appropriateness of watches or anything in general being too ostentatious relative to the wearer and their stage or station in life. So any thoughts on my situation that I mentioned above? Thank you for your time.

I would like to add that sometimes the proportion between the glass size and case matters. For instance, a 38mm white dial dress watch with 35mm glass would look bigger than a same sized one with 32mm glass.

Great video. I have what I consider small wrists at 7" and I'm short. I think roughly 40mm with short L2L is my sweet spot tho I have a 42mm dive watch with 47mm L2L that I think I just pull off. It's thicker than the Glycine though. I feel dial/crystal size makes a huge difference. Watches with bezels (divers) do not look as large generally on my wrists as same size pilot watches which I think tend to look like cans on my wrist. Incidentally 2 watches a the top of my 'someday' list are either the Glycine Combat Sub and the Squale 1521 you featured, so it would help me knowing what size are your wrists? As you say these watches are not readily available to try on especially for those of us way out in the country. Additionally, either one of those watches represents a huge purchase for me so buying to 'try' is not a good option. Thanks. New sub!

looks like you read my mind when making the video!! I have just asked in the facebook group because I'm not sure about buying an oris because of the size. unfortunatelly trying it first is not an option, that brand is not sold in my country.

Would the Orient Mako 2 be a good choice for me? At a glance I'd say my wrist is about the same size as yours.

Really interesting. However, how would you consider the big watches such as IWC Portugieser, that have this proper dress watch look ?

Hmm Chrono24 lug width is the lug to lug horizontal width (so the strap width) but the lug to lug vertical would be a nice measurement too

I could barely understand what you said when naming the particular watch you have on your wrist. What type watch is that? That's a very nice watch

I definitely agree on the 'relativity' aspect. I personally prefer a larger watch, also a bit looser, when I wear a T-shirt, but a smaller watch, a bit tighter, when I wear a suit or any long-sleeved clothes.

What is the diameter of your wrist ?
@white5mage7 жыл бұрын
bigger than mine x) btw, you mean width..
@xXSpartan029Xx7 жыл бұрын
+white5mage wouldn't it technically be circumference? 😜. Width would be the same as diameter

Does the ray II feels big on your wrist or tacky on your wrist?, been thinking of this watch if i should buy this or no because it might overwhelm or takeover my wrist My wrist size i think is 6 inch to 6 and a quartz max

I always felt a "dress" watch in my collection just had to have a leather band or steel bracelet. Just not rubber. To be fair, also wore Justin Ropers with all my suits. I'd like to think I was a fashion maverick, not a fashion moron. Good video. Enjoy your stuff.

I have 6 inch wrists and I have a Seiko 6105-8110 44m with a 19 inch waffle strap the aka Captain Willard. Martin Sheen had small wrists in Apocalypse Now who terminated Marlin Brando aka Colonel Kurtz who had a Rolex GMT-Master without a Bezel with extreme prejudice.
