I do that....I holiday in the Canary Islands which is a tax free island. Price something nice up at home and go to the jewellers over there and you will save a good chunk of money. Last time I went in to the Cartier shop and bought one of those Tanks he is wearing. Tank Solo in steel and crocodile strap, love it. Saved about €500.

I agree completely and took what you said as just because you see him fawn over a watch on this or that video refrain from running out to pick up that watch. Have an identity and thoughts of you're own. You're watch should compliment you and you're personality and or characteristics. Not to mention it would be easy to pick up on if you really liked the watch you bought or got it because somebody else due to the fact how much you know about it and you're enthusiasm towards it. Point well made...

For me 1. I keep to my budget of $300 or less. 2. I don’t buy on a whim, I research. Even if I miss out on that limited edition. At the end of the day, I am not any worse off for missing out on that one watch. There are still hundreds, thousands of other watches out there. I have let even $50 watches get away. In the end I am still enjoying what I have purchased. The journey to find that watch is more enjoyable and where life is lived than the destination. 3. I buy what impresses me not others. 4. I buy a watch with a purpose in mind. What am I going to use the watch for. If I am looking at a dress watch, how many do I already have and how much use am I going to get out of it. 5. I don’t take this to serious. I just enjoy it. What I must stop doing is 1. Buying to fit the collection. 2. Buying all the different variations of a particular watch. What I need to do is buy watches where the case and face are neutral and change the look with the bands to fit my outfit.

Hi TGV, I know I'm a bit late on this video but I thought I'd add a comment about why I wear my watches. I fly helicopters for a living and have had a Breitling Aerospace on my wrist for the past five years. The reason for this is because of the ability to set UTC on the digital dial, and local time on the analogue. I also use the bezel to set my engine start time for easy reference when it comes to filling out the paperwork at the end of the flight. It also has the section of the bracelet that can expand a small amount, meaning that it fits absolutely beautifully over my flying gloves, and then contracts again when I take them off. It's perfect. This gives me everything I need to carry out my daily tasks. However, there is one tiny draw back to this watch that catches me out every so often. Sometimes I will get airborne when the minute hand is obscuring the digital hour number, meaning that it can be difficult to distinguish whether it is 0835 UTC, or 0935 UTC for example, a figure that I am required to give to the control tower. Yes, the UTC calculation can be easily done in your head, and I also have it on my GPS, but I've trained myself to default to my watch after flying helicopters on fishing boats for a few years, and in that helicopter I only had my watch as a reference, so this can be a bit annoying. Because of this, I have recently purchased and started wearing a Glycine Airman DC-4 purist for my flying tasks. It really is a beautiful watch with a clear and easy to read face, it's completely 24 hour analogue, and I can have local time set on the bezel and UTC on the inner face. It also looks good on a NATO which fits nicely and securely over my gloves. It also looks bloody good as a dress watch, so it's kind of my jack of all trades now. The only thing I'm not that fond of is the date magnifier. Really not a fan of that and would gladly do away with it if I could. In summary, I wear my watches for my job, and hopefully they can also pull off a dress look if I need them too. While I tend to wear the Airman these days, the Breitling will always have a special place in my heart seeing as it has literally done thousands of flying hours upon my wrist, and is almost feature complete. Anyway, bit of an insight from a pilot and why I choose certain watches. Love your channel and thanks for all the advice and entertainment you've provided me with. Cheers, Simon

I love your channel and I enjoy your videos. I have been into watches now for 4 or 5 years, I have now about 50+ watches, I wear them all! I love my collection and I love where I began. It took some research and trial and error to get to where I am now, I do not regret anything. If I could add, you made great highlights, but I think for starting out, everyone needs to have 1 of the following: Aviator, Field Watch, The Diver, The Dress, The Sport, etc. It's important to have a watch for ANY Ocassion. NEVER buy retail, all of my watches I got dicounts and deals, even my watches that cost "retail" 1k+ I have never paid that much. Keeping a budget is important and I would say the most crucial. Again, do your homework and research and knowledge is all KEY. I would say, I am man who does a lot of things, I love cars and I work with my hands therefore, NOT included in my collection are some inexpensive watches and an array of G-Shocks, I can beat em up and not get butt hurt if motor oil or grease gets caked all over them. My collection includes the following brands: Diesel, Invicta, Nixon, Fossil, Seiko, Casio:( Specifically Edifice Collection) + G-Shock, And Collectible Watches: Example, Stars Wars Themed Nixon/s. Purchase watches that pretain to you and be you. Have fun with the hobby, I know I do! Enjoy y'all.

Very good tips that more or less encompass my tips. As a fairly recent newcomer in watch collecting my advice would be to have a strategy in your purchases. Make a short list and a long list of watches that you want to add to your collection. Look information up, discuss them on forums, watch reviews (no pun intended), read blogs/articles and try them on. The more you know about a watch, the more you like it or not. This way you step out of the comfort zone, enjoy the journey more and know what watches to add to your collection. My collection consists mainly of dress watches: Orient Bambino ER24001B, Orient FFD0F001W, Seiko SARB065, Seiko SBGA011, Melbourne Watch Company Portsea, Rado D-Star and a WWoor sport watch (yes, that's really a brand name). I'd like to add variety into my collection and now I'm looking for a dive watch, a moon phase and, a perpetual calendar. This is not written in stone and when I come across a Sistem51 for a fairly cheap price I will buy it because I appreciate the feat of engineering it's representing. The dive watch can be a Deep Blue (a Seiko knock-off), a Rolex Yacht-Master II or a Sinn 104 which is... a pilot watch. I'm sure that I want a dive watch, but time will tell what exactly. And for me that's the big pleasure of collecting watches!

I usually change my watch depending on how I feel and, what I'm wearing on a given day. I have been wearing my newest and favorite watch exclusively for a week and find that I may just wear this watch most of the time from now on. I have a small, very modest collection made up of about 9 watches with this newest watch being my most coveted, highest prestige and cost of the bunch. I won't ignore my other pieces completely but, for the time being I'm happy wearing this one every day.

Hi TGV... It's been months since we communicated. As always your video is spot on with advise for anyone who is in this wonderful hobby. When I communicate with someone who is new to the hobby, I tell them to buy what pleases them, a timepiece should pique your interest, it has to appeal to you on all levels. If you can honestly say that this timepiece will put a smile on your face every time you strap it on your wrist and gives you the warm fuzzies, then by all means, make the purchase, enjoy it as often as you wish, and wear it in good health. The bottom line is... It is your money and your wrist. Buy those that will make "you" happy. Hope you and your family are well. Ciao, My Friend!

For a fellow collector whom I have coffee with almost every morning at the local bagel shop, it's about the hunt..... we see a piece in a watch review, or in a jewelers, or in a pawn shop.....yes there are some real hidden treasures in pawn shops.....and we hunt for data about the piece......we hunt down other possible sources for the same piece....and we quietly go for the target item.....and then celebrate over the next morning coffee...life can be simple and fun.....share it with a friend.....

Around that time I started binge watching your channel. First I bought an F-91W, then a Duro, then before I noticed that my collection was choosing its own theme, a G-Shock DW5600E-1V. So evidently my beginner collection is centering around the brand Casio. Especially so, since my next watch is going to be a EQS500DB-1A1 Solar Chronograph. What a neat little set of watches, and I owe you a thank-you for turning me on to each of them. The next phase of my career as a watch enthusiast, I think I'd like to focus on the Dan Henry brand. What a stunning line of watches he is offering!

LOL TGV! Loved the poll i wished I was in it too! I change on my moods. My beater watches are under a grand. I buy Seikos us a tribute to my grandfather who purchased his only watch back in 1976 and he paid 400 dollars I do believe today's market it equals around 750 current dollars.

Hey buddy, thanks for the cool videos. I am just getting into watches a little more seriously at 49, and you are helping me have fun with it and learn. I've always had a watch, but never put much thought into it. I just picked up my first automatic- an Orient gen 2 ver.3. I also have a casio aw168, a timex expedition scout, and a Peugeot. I also just joined Watchgang so we will see what i get sent! I want a Seiko. I bought a chrono seiko online, but it doesn't work. Keep up the good work and the positive vibes!!

Thanks for your great and inspiring content :) right now I decide every morning which watch to wear... although I‘ve only got three. Nothing special (in your advanced point of view), but I still like them: a Festina square Chrono, a DKNY 'dress watch' and a 20 year old Switch Irony 'Secret Agent'. Thanks to your videos I‘ve set up a list of some pieces I‘d like to have (and can and want to afford). Best regards from Bavaria/Germany and keep up your passionate work, Andi

Thank-you for another great piece of wisdom, your advice is always very much appreciated! I have a G-shock for work as a cop because it has to take the knocks then when I'm home I like to wear my Tissot Visodate. Currently hunting for a Seiko or an Orient for a daily beater, and like you said the journey is fun! Ciao!

Like watching your videos it helped me a lot I’m more open minded now about watches as I was before. I am a big Seiko fan and was very negative about buying any other watches like Citizen, Casio, G-shock etc. Not anymore tho thx to you👍

1st video I watched on this channel: Who is this guy and what is he on about? 10th video on the channel: This guy is such a positive gentleman. 'Pure class'. I will support this channel forever. *subscribed* Thanks for this video. Was going to pull the trigger on an expensive dress watch. Due to this video I realized I wanted it for the wrong reasons (needed the piece for the collection. Not truly excited to get it).

I tend to buy watches that look good and are different from what's out there, the weirder the watch the better, regardless of brand name, more importantly,it's all about the look and the feel of the watch, these 2 factors are crucial in my watch buying decision, plus I have imposed a limit of spending no more than $300(AUS) per watch,I'm a novice watch collector,I've only got 10 watches, but they bring me joy either looking at them or wearing them.Great video as well, cheers.

Driving watch. Would recommend a collection of 6 of the best watches you can afford. Love your channel Tristano. Saluti!

I just watched number 10, and I'm already liking where this video is going. It's not very wise to go into debt for the sake of collecting not just watches but anything, you should carefully manage your budget, and if you really like something outside your price range, it's wiser to save your money and wait a bit until you have enough.

My favorite tip is the "controlled and concise" one. Obviously if you're in the business or have a channel, then that makes it different and difficult (almost wouldn't make sense), but if you're going to be more of a serious collector it makes sense to me to keep it controlled. I have a few months left before I make my first purchase(s) 😉, but I've done a ton of research and know what I'm going to start with and how large my collection will be. The rule I'm employing for myself is 10 or fewer high quality pieces that I know I'll wear a lot and enjoy; ones that fit my style, career, and life. I don't want to hoard and I don't want the stress of feeling I have to wear each of my 20 watches if they're not getting used enough. Great video, thanks.

I enjoy collecting a variety of different things. I have a passion for watches, especially mechanical ones. I also collect vintage razors and pocket knives. I enjoy quality but don't feel compelled to spend outside my budget. I always consider first if the object will own me or the other way around. My collections are a constant source of pleasure and enjoyment and I use all of them.

TGV, another great vid. I never really cared about different straps until I found the channel. I have a gold tone Seiko (Rolex day date homage) $150 dollar watch, put a red croc strap 28th a gold clasp and "BOOM" looks like a whole new piece. Not gonna lie your Tudor gave me the idea. I actually have worn my SKX almost exclusively for about a year. I have found it oddly satisfying to have a go-to watch. I have heard the same concept with pocket knives. As you carry the same knife for years, or wear the same watch, you develop a relationship with it. It begins to feel natural and any alternative just feels out of place. Also, as you carry the same knife or wear the same watch, it develops character.

I agree with a similar concept of signature watches, for me an agriculturist it feels that it should be the green alpinist. I'd still watch a g shock when it gets muddy. But the alpinist can handle the office or mud if needed.

I grew up carrying a pocket knife and will continue to do so. Just like generations before me, if I have my pants on, I have a knife with me. I heard an old man on the forums say you can learn a lot about a man by looking at his knife. If the tip is broke off, he's careless. If it's dull, he's lazy. And if he doesn't have one, well he's just useless ;) haha

Enjoy your informative videos they have stoked my fire within for a couple more watches. I’ve been interested in watchmaking forever. However I’m a woman who operates a cattle property in Australia, so I wear Timex military waterproof while working. Also Lorus sports military. But I have Australian Adina dress and chronograph and hardy outdoor watches that I adore. I have a fancy gemstone and shell dial Citizen eco chronograph for outings. A beautiful watch. My first watch a vintage Renown. My Dads vintage Viceroy. An Anne Kline ll dress watch. Just purchased a skeleton Swatch auto which is cool. (First Auto). I bought a Timex compass for hiking. And my latest favourite is a Victorinox Maverick. Around 18 watches for me and not one Seiko haha. Well maybe one day. I just mix them up to wear them as I feel for the day when not working. I’m very happy with my lot.

I'm at under $300 and have an 8 watch collection. I have a Caravelle, an Invicta, 3 Citizens, a Fossil and two Seikos. The 3 Citizens and 2 Seikos are "Vintage refurbished" and were $120 for all 5. The Invicta and Caravelle were purchased on Amazon for around $140 and the Fossil was an add on in a gun trade. I feel like it's a decent collection for under $300.

I’ve seen a lot of people recommending the Seiko 5 as a first automatic. I can easily see that is a great watch but after seeing the Orient Defender with the cream dial I easily decided that it will be my first automatic. The last couple days I have been thinking about what watch to get after that and it gave me a bad feeling. The whole idea of doing that sorta takes away the excitement of getting that Orient Defender and I can’t do that to myself. So this video really highlights the best way to approach a hobby that I have learned from my other hobbies. I just have to remind myself that these life lessons really apply to all things since all things are really one thing.

Been watching your channel for awhile but haven't commented until now. First of all, great vid! My one suggestion would be if you're looking at an expensive watch of a style you've never had before, try a less expensive alternative first. For example, if you want a Tank or a Reverso but have never had a rectangular watch, buy a Citizen with similar dimensions for $100 and wear it for a few days before getting the Cartier or JLC. Something that looks great in the store may not feel so great after some time on the wrist.

Best advise on a watch purchase is wait; I waited 6+ months to upgrade from a Casio to a Vostok; even after wanting it for 6 months I was worried I wouldn’t like it as much as I could have. Half a year later it may be the best purchase I’ve ever made
