I would also caution buying yarn from eBay unless it is an actual yarn/ hobby type store, not a seller who has random goods. Generally the yarn is not bagged & you don’t know how it was kept or where. I’ve purchased from 5 different sellers within a week’s time and most the yarn was super smelly. First yarn haul was musty like it was in someones basement. The 2’nd haul smelled like it was kept out in the open and smelled like smokers/ air fresheners/cooking grease. 3rd was Hobby Store & 4th was random seller & both we’re OK. 5th &last - never again. I’ve never had bad luck going direct with yarn manufacturers/ craft stores like Lion Brand, ICE Yarns, Hobbi, Mary Maxim, Red Heart and strictly yarn only sellers on Etsy. I never rec’d smelly yarn on any of these sites.
@showandtellmeg2 ай бұрын
@blacksunshine5758 It's a risk for sure, but I've been very lucky with my 2nd hand online purchases. I do freeze my skeins for a few days and maybe lay it out to remove the smell of other people's houses. The worst ive had is 2 skeins smelling mildly of maple syrup lol.

If you are trying to kill bacteria by putting it in the freezer, you should know that labs *preserve* bacteria by freezing it in temperatures much colder than a household freezer (in other words, putting it in a home freezer is a waste of time). Honestly, I don't think buying yarn from the thrift store is any worse than buying preowned anything from anywhere. Just be cognizant of what you use your finished product for and wash it before use whenever possible.

I got spoiled to using non-acrylic blends. I found acrylic so scratchy. It got better over the years but I still remember some of that old Frank's Nursery and Crafts and Michaels yarns being too springy and throwing off my tension. Oddly enough one of my Facebook friends saw me starting a project with Madelinetosh superwash fingering wool and she said I was brave. I also think that casual yarn users are catered to by the bulk yarns at Michaels/JoAnn for quick to make projects. Most won't do socks or a fine sweater for ages and won't know there's DK and fingering weights. Then you have to LYS buy.
@showandtellmeg3 ай бұрын
I agree - I kind of hate that they market chunky yarn to beginners. I feel they would be better off with DK and then encouraged to go smaller as they get more used to yarn in general. I still do use acrylic, but I do have some types I try to avoid because you can get much better yarn for the price.

I'm a Floridian too. I often crochet with thinner wools and blends. Wool breathes and depending on the type, can be comfortable in lighter weights for many projects. 2nd hand makes both sides happy....the seller knows their stuff will not end up in the garbage and the buyer made a good deal or like you never had a chance to hold it in your hands because of budgets .

My husband and children always get me expensive yarn at my LYS. ! I’m flabbergasted sometimes they will get me gift cards in large amounts! So I like to support my LYs. I used to get cheap yarns because that’s what we could afford. But now I don’t have to worry about the cost because they spend the money! Thanks for your advice. It’s good to know.

I don’t have a LYS to even support. I have to drive 1.5 hours to find one. I’m trying to decide if it would be worth it to open one here.

Thrift yarn for 50 cents? I wish. Stores here charge almost new yarn prices 😢
@showandtellmeg3 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's hard. It's crazy how much prices at thrift stores vary even from town to town. It's taken me years of thrifting to narrow down which ones are the good ones for what type of item. Lots of stores around here charge close to new prices on yarn as well, but I found the 2 around here that do 50 cents to $1 each.

Has anyone bought anything from TEMU? I think it’s from China which makes me hesitant. Does anyone have any feedback?
@showandtellmeg3 ай бұрын
@@kristyann9641 I actually have a whole video about how to find good yarn on Temu I made earlier this year :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn7acoeeds2Soqcsi=tFFIuiQgiN9MYiE1 It was quite controversial at the time and I got some backlash, but I do purchase yarn from Temu every so often when its the Lotus brand I mention in that video. I give all the particulars there, but its a legit high end yarn brand that has discontinued some yarns and you can find those on Temu while they last. Ive been happy with all the yarns ibought that I describe in that video, so I hope this helps :)

I discovered Ritohobby recently. They seem even cheaper than Lindehobby. I haven't ordered from them, but will soon. They offer a best price guarantee, so if you find the same yarn cheaper elsewhere, you get this price -5%. For european folks it looks like a nice option, bc they're located in Denmark. Don't know about international shipping...
