I disagree with those that state this video is a sales pitch. I find explanations of gear such as a rudder, which I don't have, but see on kayaks, helpful. Now I know why some have them, and I know that don't need one. So, excellent tip, Ken. Also, if you regard a life vest tip as a "sales pitch", well remember, a life vest is cheaper than a coffin.

Just getting back into kayaking after many years. Went on a trip last weekend and was on the water for five hours. Was a little tired and sore the day after but the workout was worth it as well as the nature therapy that came with it. Can't wait for my kayak to show up so I can get back to it.

Great video. The biggest reason I chose an inflatable kayak instead of s hardshell, besides price, was that they are so much harder to flip and far easier to get back into. They have their drawbacks, for example mine is a 2 person kayak so it's a little heavier, a little slower than most, and it is definitely susceptible to being pushed around by the wind, though it's not bad, not nearly as bad as an inflatable row boat. There is a small island in the lake i paddle at that is swimming distance from where I launch bit the boating lane is between my launch area and the island so I have to be extra careful that no boats are anywhere around before I head toward it. My kayak is bright yellow and my life vest is bright orange so I'm pretty visible but I don't like to assume i can be seen, never know what idiot decided to drink and boat. I've practiced falling out of the kayak and getting back in both in water where i could reach, and in water above my head. also have anyone who will be in the kayak woth me practice it, and practice helping each other. Never carry much gear beyond my car keys and phones, they stay in water proof case that floats. My vests also have loud whistles on them and we don't go out on open water if the wind is higher than 15 mph gusts, or if the wind is pushing south of my launch location. Those are things I do to make sure we stay safe. I've also learned even with the wind and waves pushing the right direction it can still be harder to get back than you think. Last time we went out, we paddles into the wind the entire time so we could let the wind help is get back easier when we were more tired. Well we turned around to head back and the wind stopped entirely. We made it back in half the time it took to head out but we had to paddle hard for the entire time, as opposed to a leisurely pace on the way out, against the wind. Maybe just because it didn't Feel like we were going very fast, I don't know.

I never go out without my "stirrup" A rope knotted in an 8 of which one part is snugly looped around the cockpit and the other part is folded on the forward deck. When in the water and having attached the floating device to one end of my paddle and the other pushed underneath the webbing vertically to the kayak, I now take the folded up top half of the 8 and push it underwater under my feet. Leaning on the paddle and stepping onto the loop makes re-entry very easy rather than trying to hoist my body in the kayak. It acts like a stepping stone and it works.
@grahamjordan9170
@grahamjordan9170 6 жыл бұрын
How long is your stirrup? I realize that it partly depends on the size of the cockpit opening, but how deep in the water should the stirrup go when used to re-enter? Thanks.

I’ve got a rope ladder with plastic rings. Made for sailboats but I clip to a road around the coaming. Its 4 steps. I reach across the cock pit and put weight on my arms as I step up. For narrower cockpits, straddle the boat then slide in. For larger cockpits, step right in. I’ve been meaning to put a float on it. I’m (cough) on my third one....

I thought I wanted a rudder then I tried one wasn't keen on the flipflopping pedals when I wanted to paddle a little harder then I tried a swift kayak with a skeg and loved it. Less skeg less resistance so you only use as much as you have too. Normally not more than 1/3 skeg. I now have a Swift Saranac15 LV (low volume) and a Saranac 14 LV both with skegs.

Thank you for the video guys. One thing you messed up, it is a wonderful thing to have a beer on the river in your kayak, it isn’t against the law except in some places and God has said “wine gladdens the heart of man.” The appropriate statement would be, “don’t get drunk on your kayak.” Getting drunk is foolish and will lead to great suffering of many kinds but alcohol is a blessing especially in scenic and peaceful places that you might find while kayaking.

Only thing beginners learned from this video is that kayaking is more expensive and in depth than they thought and that’s entirely not true. I have a $500 setup: 10 ft. Pelican kayak (yes Pelican), a few accessories like a paddle holder, small anchor with cleat, basic paddle, foam roof rack with ratchet straps to tie it down, nice pair of lightweight shirt and shorts. Will these last forever? Of course not, but for someone young and on a budget it’s given me years of enjoyment. Don’t let someone tell you that you need to get this kayak and that paddle and a rudder. You will still have fun whether you spend a little or a lot.

Actually, most sea kayaks have skegs to keep your boat from weather cocking. Skegs have a couple advantages over rudders. If you are in waves, waves from behind can lift your rudder out of the water making it less effective. A skeg is a couple feet forward under the boat. Second, if you are playing in rocks, it's easy to break a rudder hanging off the back of the boat.

Question May 15th, 2018. Hope someone checks in. Just bought a sit on top self bailing with scupper holes. I prefer to sit in a dry kayak with our cold water lakes in Oregon. There was also a little water in the interior storage compartment, which I would like to be more waterproof. DO YOU THINK it is wise to plug the scupper holes permanently and will that keep the interior dry? I would rather attach stabilizers than tip over unintentionally when kayak camping. Thanks!

This just my thoughts. Im not a professional or an instructor. But, I’ve done a lot of dumb things, and lived to tell about it...Personally, I’d want two things at once. The wind behind me, and point straight towards the best landing. It’s not likely to get both and you may have neither. If the wind is perpendicular to your preferred direction, I’d suggest working at 45* angle. You may want to “tack” like in sailing. Ie, if the wind is from the north and you want to go west, start northwest, then southwest, back to northwest then southwest again, etc. you’ll generally go west, without having the wind 90 degrees to your hull. if that’s a real risk, get a yak with a skeg. Also at least one water tight hull section behind a bulkhead. Keep supplies on hand so if a storm forces you to beach away from your preferred landing, you can make a decent time of it. Snacks, communication devices, emergency supplies. Etc. best of luck!

@@ChristelVinot You'll be seen in a swimming pool. However, you'll likely be using the same pfd for all your paddling. It is more likely to be of use in the worst conditions, possibly at sea. Not being funny here, but how visible do you find cyclists wearing "safety black" ?

You'll fit comfortably in some sit in kayaks. Sea kayaks tend to be narrower than 'recreational' kayaks, and so I would try out some different recreational sit in kayaks.

Kayaking looks easy in videos, but it's much harder than that. It takes a lot of upper body especially shoulders strength. And navigating through the wind is a pain in the ass.

always carry 2 paddles ;One has a narrow blade for low angle cruising between the barrier islands and the mainland The other has a wide blade for high angle paddling in and out of inlets and for going under bridges where the combination of rebounding boat wakes and the natural Venturi effect can create some really chaotic conditions that you will want to quickly escape from.I secure my extra paddle w/Yak Clips ...nice productFlorida is the land of the shallow water wave which behaves very differently than deep water waves do I've honestly never had a problem paddling with gators , sharks and snakes in the water .Although I have been known to start singing Rock the Boat when a big gator pops up and says Hi Maybe it's an illusion But I would feel very uncomfortable paddling a sit on top kayak thru waters with gators in it

Didn't mean to freak you out But it is what it is A couple of years ago I was in my Pungo 14 paddling across the north shore of West Lake Everglades NP at the end of a very long day that began at Alligator Creek Campsite Daylight was fading fast and the weather was turning to crap equally fast ( see shallow water waves ) When the alligators slid into the water and swam out to say Hi ,it was nice to know that I could roll the Pungo over 45 degrees brace it and stay in the yak . I wouldn't dream of doing that in a Tarpon 14 bc I probably would end up in the water Not good Not good at all

So I just did 37 miles on my wal mart kayak a couple days ago and I definitely broke all three of those rules... life vest was under me for extra cushion, had a beer every couple of hours, and definitely should have covered my legs to keep from sunburn...but the rudder probably would've helped with the wind.
