The first really good multi-tool I had was a Gerber suspension it really blew me away for being on the cheaper side and a really good set of tools. I then got a Leatherman Rev which I carry to work because I know what I'm getting into throughout the work day. When I'm not at work I carry a Leatherman Wave which I love and is by far my favorite multi-tool with pliers. I also carry a Leatherman Tread which comes in handy more than you would think, that is always on my wrist, when shit hits the fan its nice to know that I have many tools at my disposal... However bottle openers become really redundant I carry three on the daily...

I have the Skeletool, bought it so I would have a lighter weight option backpacking and it's durability has impressed me. I've had a few other brands of multi-tools that just don't hold up mostly because they can't seem to get the metallurgy right. Either the plier's metal is too soft or the knife blades are too brittle. Leatherman seems to have it figured out.

I really didn't get on well with the skeletool personally. It functioned very well as a knife, but the pliers felt far too fragile for my liking, plus they're not really needle nosed when compared to stuff like the charge and wave. I liked the idea of the bit driver position in theory, one less step to access it, but due to the shape of the handles I found it felt quite awkward compared to the straight handles of the charge, wave etc. It felt like it was primarily designed as a knife, then had a bit of extra functionality tacked on as an afterthought

You are so good at survivalism it is hair raising. Thank you for this. In the UK a fixed blade is illegal, so I was wanting to know if I can swap over the saw and knife blades so it is a fixed saw and legal if the right blade lengths. It would maybe increase UK prices if the Surge and Wave had a non locking knife blade, or have that option if you swap 2 blades. Neither is a legal carry here, especially if it can be seen in a belt sheath. So for me I will stick with the good old Swiss Army Champ.
@simonh63714 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know mate it''s annoying that we can't carry so many multitools legally. I even have my doubts about the knifeless Rebar because it has a pretty stabby looking awl which you can lock in place. I was looking at a long-discontinued Kick which an obscure webshop has some old stock laying around of but someone told me even the non locking blade on that isn't 100% kosher because if the plier handles are together, one of the handles will block it from folding into the other one completely (and stop it chopping your finger off) so apparently that's not neccessarily an option. So for a larger bag carry multitool I have the Gerber MP600 bladeless, I carry a SAK or Bokerplus anyway so I always have a legal folding blade. Otherwise I have a Squirt for ultralight pocket carry, or a SOG micro toolclip which I clip on my belt.

Good stuff ! I actually carry ,and use, Leatherman gear everywhere I go. On my keychain is the best mini tool ever the Micra, small light, and strong enough for most little tasks. My pocket EDC tool is the Sidekick, medium duty, pocket clip. Its similar to the Wingman, but I like the saw instead of the scissors, which I have on the Micra. My EDC/daypack carries the Charge TTI Cabelas edition, camo with black tools, heavy duty, and strong. I was able to use the sheath it comes with to make a mini kit, with the bit kit, extension, a small ferro rod, striker/hacksaw blade, nail wrapped with duct tape, and some paracord. I hope to get the new Surge with the replaceable carbide wire cutters and interchangeable blades/tools, saws, files. The MUT AR tool is another possibility for the range bag, and I like the Raptor medical tool for my first aid kit....Leatherman just makes some of best.

Being uk based, I have to say the old PST (PST II in my case) is the most practical in reality. Whilst it shows its age compared to most Leathermans, not having the tools or comfort to use of the Wave, it also doesn't have a locking blade, which allows me to carry it in the uK, without the issues that I would have with modern Leatherman's. My job does allow me to carry a locking Leatherman but as often as not it is just easier to carry the PST II.

Great video as always, Ben! I have yet to buy one, but just going on the list of included tools, the Wave and the Surge are my favorites. How heavy is the Surge? It would be my EDC multi-tool, so weight is a little bit of a concern. I don't mind some heft, but I don't want a dumbbell in my pocket either lol. Probably going to go with the Wave for EDC and have a Surge in my pack eventually. One just minor comment/question, though. Why have both the serrated blade and the saw on the same tool? I just don't see the point of having a serrated blade in the tool when it already has a saw lol. Just my opinion.
@livingsurvival9 жыл бұрын
+kpw528 i'd go with the wave as the surge is heavy yes. both are fairly heavy but the wave is smaller. the saw is good for cutting notches in wood for traps and bow drill sets as well as small sawing. the serrated blade is good for cutting rope.
