Small transition tips such as putting your race belt on as of it was a pair of pants (saves time rushing to clip it around your waist) and for T2, for people that wear hats/sunglasses, start leaving transition with these in your hands as you can put them on while moving. Focus time on shoes and/or socks!

Before my first race I was really worried about finding my bike in transition. I did all the things pre-race. Then, at the end of the swim there was one bike left in transition. So now I work on finding my spot again after the bike.

I consider this my own little hack, I keep the cardboard that comes in my triathlon bike shoes and my racing flats. The only time that cardboard comes out is on race day. This way my shoes are never "flop" and my feet have plenty of room to slide right in. Makes a little bit of difference during transitions.

Yeah, I remember putting my water bottles in the freezer the night before the race, then promptly forgetting to take them out and to the race. Luckily they were handing out water bottles in the goodie bags!

I did a lot of run drafting at IMAZ in 2007, even uphill, into the wind it was an advantage. I was even doing it from 50y back on the windiest sections. Feeling the wind at my back on the downwind sections, helped optimize my speed there, too.

If you are doing an IM with changing tents, go to the tent exit area to avoid the crowd at the entrance.. also, you can wait until you get to the bike to put your bike shoes on if there is no debris in transition..and take your feet out of your shoes and pedal with your feet ontop of them the last bit of the bike

Great info. With those aviator sunglasses, Heather reminds me of Kelly McGillis in Top Gun during Charlie's intro scene: "Now you'll also be trained and evaluated by a few civilian specialists...she's also a civilian contractor, so you do not salute her. But you'd better listen to her because the Pentagon listens to her about your proficiency. It's all yours, Charlie."

Unfortunately personally, the drafting thing only works for pros who know what they are doing, particularly if you place behind the wrong person at he wrong speed. T1 and T2, the best way of finding your bike is to study the location carefully, make a note of which row / rack. Are you near the way in / watch out. I actually make sure I use a towel that is tidy by my bike and coloured the way no other athlete would use!
@heatherfell_oly5 жыл бұрын
Leigh I drafted Fraser in the marathon last weekend and it made a really significant difference, I suggest you try it on a windy day.

"it's really windy today isn't it" As not a leaf moves on the trees. Now that being the case I have to wonder just what Fraser was alluding to and just where the wind was coming from. Drafting might become not quite so advantageous in that circumstance. 😜😱💨🏃

Immodium just stops your intestines from working, and thus also blocking absorption of nutrients.. and carbs. Had a long conversation with a professor in exercise physiology. He called me a fool for taking it pre-race.
@Uitspuw5 жыл бұрын
@Fraser Cartmell How many grand tours has Tim Kerrison won?
@chinsauyong4 жыл бұрын
@Fraser Cartmell nah, he didn't really get you. From a quick Google search: "The active ingredient in Imodium is the drug loperamide. It works by making the muscles in your intestines contract more slowly. This in turn slows the movement of food and fluids through your digestive tract, which allows the bowel to absorb more fluids and nutrients. The process makes your bowel movements smaller, more solid, and less frequent. It also decreases the amount of fluids and electrolytes your body loses." So your tip on using Immodium is justified!

Nice video ! 2. About the icy/cold drinks. I am not sure it is quite good for hydratation to drink cold stuff, especially during a race. It really depends on the habits, but from a physiological point of view, it is usually better to have the drinks at ambient temperature. But the idea is nice though :). 3. About the bathroom, yes indeed, Immodium is really important in long races, it is even a good tip for marathon runners (or even half marathon for some people). But you should also mention how efficient it is to train to pee while on the bike ;)

I do sprint triathlons. I don't put on biking shoes. I wear my running shoes on the bike. No socks. It's only a 5K run. My T2 tranisition time is usually one of the fastest.
@rogerc235 жыл бұрын
@Jim Quinn I did this once as well but had to use flat pedals which were a bit heavy and i found my feet didn't stay in position as well. But you may be on to something, like a pedal and shoe combination that you don't have to change from bike to run would be a real money maker.

Caffeine raises heart rate. Not a problem for you young runners, but after 50, max heart rate becomes an issue. I NEVER use caffeine during a race. I'm already at max heart rate for most of the race. I also make my own energy gels out of a cocktail of honey and other stuff. Good video guys.
