Nice to see the Pentel 200 series still in use, like you I have had all 4 sizes for about 25 to 30 years now, and I wouldn't change them. have tried some others but always come back to my pentels, and I also mostly use the 0.5 for everything like your good self, good review smoothie.

Thanks Old Timer, the Pentel 200 series is a real classic, its funny because I have all these mechanical pencils that I've acquired over the years and the P205 is the one I most often reach for when I'm drawing, although the Graphgear 1000 and 500 are superb, there's something special about the P205, it just feels so precise.

Are they still made as well as they used to be? I have the first set I bought about forty years ago, and all of them have more use on them than a hundred normal mechanical pencils, but they still work great. When I saw new colors I bought a purple, a green, and three or four other colors, but haven't used them yet. The olds ones are like friends.

I use 0.7mm because it feels like a balance between 9mm and 5mm. I dont use the 9 or 5 because I dont really like thin or thick lines. The 0.7mm is also perfect because i don't get distracted by its plain metallic color.

Bravo. The Staedtler 925 Silver series 0.3 is the first mechanical pencil I've ever enjoyed. I am a wooden pencils -phile and crusader. There are just a couple more brands left that I am looking to try, but I doubt any will match or surpass my experiences with the 925 series. Great video. Really enjoying it! I can no longer feel alone in my attention to detail when it comes to writing and drawing instruments.

Great review! I find that the Pentel P20x series pencils have lengthwise ridges that dig into my middle finger knuckle from the way I grip the instrument, so can't use them for a longer period of time. Otherwise, I really like their minimalist and direct drawing feel. From this review, I'm keen to try out the Pental Graphgear 1000 as a pencil that might be more comfortable for all-around use.

I really like all the Pentel Graph gear pencils, particularly the 1000, but all are good. My favorite mechanical pencil for drawing, thought, is the Pentel 200 series. These cost about five bucks, sometimes a good bit less, they weigh nothing, and the just keep going. I have the first set I bought about forty years ago, and I can't even guess how many miles of lines, how many sketches and drawing, and how many hundreds of thousands of words have gone into these pencils, but they still work. I'm not fond of the grip, but I use a thin slip on foam or silicon grip, and this turns them into a completely wonderful pencil. These are the pencils all the pros I worked with used, even after trying dozens of more expensive pencils. With the cheap slip on grip, I absolutely love them to death. One mechanical pencil that I don't think gets enough love is the Pentel Graphlet. If the Graph Gear 1000 and the P200 had a child, I think it would be the Graphlet.

just a tip on the graphgear, you don't need to push in the lead before you retract the tip, once you retract the tip the lead moves freely and you can just push it in without pushing the button on top.

Excellent review. I have a 2mm mechanical pencil with an incremental lead feed, I wasn't aware of the one you showed here, the Staedtler 925 25 20. I have a Rotring rapid PRO 2.0 which has a lovely feel and balance, although perhaps it could be a bit on the heavy side for some people.

Yes currently I'm ordering a Pentel Graphgear 500 and 1000 along with a Staedtler (all in 0.5mm). I'd like to get a Rotring 600 or 800 although I hear the 800 has some wiggle in the lead sleeve which concerns me although it's pocket safe. Others have mentioned that the 600 is more sturdy although the lead sleeve is more prone to breaking. Have you had any experiences with those two Rotring pencils?

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Super Promecha, and I love the metal grip. But then again, I have small fingers so they don't really come in contact with the other lines too often. I just picked mine up recently, and I'm still very pleased with it. But to each his own.

Thanks for your video! My favorite one is one that it's been with me for more than 27 years. A rotring 0.3 I believe it was one of the first to came in 0.3. It's marked being made in "W. Germany". Last year I brought a new one (rotring 0.3 but it was such a bad quality, didn't lasted a month) I clicked in your video because you have one quite like that.

I appreciate that you have defined logical reasons as to why you like and don't like certain pencils. People ask me why I haven't purchased an Ohto Super ProMecha. I have countless reviews (including yours), verifying that many dislike it. So, why take a chance on something so many revile? Then again, I also really dislike the grip of the GraphGear. To each their own on that one. ;) I'm guessing that the 2 mm 925 does not have a lead sharpener built in?

Nice review! I've had a number of these pens as well. I also like the Pentel GraphGear 1000's. Great clip, well balanced and sturdy. The only downside for me is that the grip starts fairly far back from the tip. I use them for traveling since they retract and I can protect my tips. The Staedtler 925's are also excellent. Really well weighted and comfortable to draw with. I find it better balanced than the Rotring rapid pro 2.0 that's a little back heavy. For the studio I pretty much stick to the Rotrings. Excellent pencils and worth every penny. If the 600's are a bit too much for your pocketbook, try the 500's. Very similar feel, just lighter. The insides of the 600 are definitely of higher quality, but I've had zero issues with either after years of use.

smoothie77 yes, I saw that the 600’s have gotten cheaper too. I haven’t tried the 800 yet. I actually just ordered one. Pricey, but will be worth it if it performs nearly as well as the 600 since it has the retractable tip. Otherwise, a cheap BIC ballpoint pen cap is a perfect fit for the Rotring pencils.

My favorite mechanical pencil is the Kokuyo enpitsu . It is cheap, rubber coated, comfortable in the hand. There is nothing fancy about this pencil. There is no pathetic tiny eraser with a tiny cap to go over it and lose. Put a single stick of graphite in the hole in the end when it is time for a new lead. It is a basic pencil which comes in 3 sizes, 0.7, 0.9 and 1.3. Kokuyo graphite is smooth and lovely.

@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 Жыл бұрын
rOtring are not as good as Pentel (in terms of performance, precision, mechanism, eraser, comfort or price) They just feel better but what feels to what actually works better, is a huge difference. I like to drive a Mercedes, but it's a Toyota that all professionals use for work!! PS Rapid Pro 2mm, the lead tip wobbles so much, (with any 2mm lead from any brand) that it's a 50 euro thrown in the garbage! The only way to fix that issue, is to harvest a laed from a wooden pencil like the Faber Castell 9000, without removing the glue completely from it. That's the only lead, that can make that pencil work however, you have to use a super sharp utility razor ,and do that "surgery" to only get one lead.... On the other hand, the BEST 2mm lead holder for drawing, costs 5 to max 10 euro and it's the Faber Castell TK 9400 series... or the TK 4600 for on the go sketches!! Same goes for mechanical pencils. Nothing is better for drawing, than a Pentel Graphgear 500 0.5mm. Even the Pentel P200, outperforms, most pencils on the market!! rOtring is nice for collectors or for drafting, where I'd still choose Pentel and Faber Castell combo!!

Great and extensive review. Much appreciated. I just received delivery of my Graphgear 1000 (on the strength of this vid) I wanted and bought the thinner (0.3mm) version but found out straight away that the thinner lead breaks very easily so I've ordered a pack of the Kuru Toga 0.3mm "diamond infused" leads in the hope that they will be a bit more resilient. I also have a Kuru Toga, and the lead does seem to be very strong. I've also learnt to be a little less heavy handed ;-)

Another question (last), you recommend the Pentel Mechanical Pencils so my question is about the 'leads'; they are a polymer not graphite. Does this make a difference when doing the 'wash'? Thank you
@smoothie77drawingpainting
@smoothie77drawingpainting 7 жыл бұрын
Ask as many questions as you like Larry, I will always try to answer if I can, Using polymer instead of regular graphite makes no difference, in fact polymer smudges slightly less than graphite and is certainly waterproof, its ideal for pencil and wash techniques.

I honestly really like the Faber Castell tk fine, I don't find it's loose tip an issue, I don't even noticed at all. I'll be looking to get a TK vario L. I think my preference are what ever pencil feels light, that's why the Graphgear 1000 tired me in no time and s cheap Zebra m301 was refreshing on my hand (still my favorite is the Faber Castell)

I have a Rotring 600 that I found on Amazon UK for less than the Pentel 500 is currently going for now. Keep an eye out for a price drop if you want one. But I agree that the Pentels are all around fantastic pencils. I also have a Muji pencil that is all plastic with a rubbery grip that I actually like quite a bit.

Thanks for the video, very helpful. If you don't have a patreon start one. If people toss you a buck or two you could buy things like the rotring and review it. In turn that'd give us more content and more people would contribute. That could grow into all types of videos. People will contribute if it results in good content. Thank you

The best pencils EVER (Pentel Grapghgear 500 and P205) cost 5 euro each. Is that what you call too expensive or they sell those for much more where you live?? I don't think that a 5 euro pencil is expensive. Add on that, the fact that you're getting the best of the best pencils and you have a rather very cheap pencil!

I am starting to feel a negative difference between the 0.5 Pentels and the regular Derwents because of the the difference in the sizes/coverage. Is there a solution of is it a matter of using the smaller 0.5 for small drawings & the Derwents' (others as well) for larger drawings? Would going for the 0.9 be the answer? Thank you for your reply
@smoothie77drawingpainting
@smoothie77drawingpainting 7 жыл бұрын
I use the 0.5 for fine detail, not necessarily small drawings, and I use regular pencils for shading and general use, I wouldn't use a 0.5 for shading large areas, that would feel wrong to me too, but if you like using mechanical pencils for everything then a 0.9 or even a 2.0 would be the best options

I always hated mechanical pencils, but it wasn't that they were bad, it was that I kept buying cheap plastic pencils that broke easily. When I got my first job I decided to buy the Pentel GraphGear 1000, and it cost me almost $15. The moment I first wrote with it I knew it was worth every damn cent. I've had it for 3 years, and it's been my favorite pencil to write with. Now if only I can find a pen to accompany it in my writing arsenal.

Interesting video again. Sometimes I have problems when I want to draw. I don´t know whether use wood pencil, mechanical pencil (0.5) or mechanical pencil (2mm). Even using all kind of pencils, I don´t know whether use staedtler, faber C., koh-i-noor, etc. I have Pentel P205 and some 2mm pencils. 4 days ago I bought a 5.6mm Koh-i-noor pencil and it is fantastic...and cheap. By the way, I have just bought in Amazon the M+R manual sharpener. 22.73€ to Spain.

Hi Rafa, I normally use wood pencils for the majority of my work, but there are times I need to get fine detail and that's when I switch to mechanical pencil, I can only suggest going with what feels right for you, I agree the Koh-inoor 5.6mm is a great pencil, I have used one for many years, I think you will also like the M+R manual sharpener, you got it at a good price!

That's strange, never had that problem with any of the pencils you mention, its quite normal to find very occasionally and I mean "very occasionally" tiny bits of clay even in the best quality pencils but they should normally feel smooth, you might just have a bad batch? I will be doing a review on Derwent pencils soon, but I can tell you the Derwents always feel good to me. I have used them for about 25 years .

Aaron Peattie, in my opinion, Faber Castell and Koh-i-noor are harder pencils than other, but their quality is really good. Smoothie, I have recently used Derwent and they are good too. Now I am drawing with Lyra. Lyra are even better in my opinion. It has been a great surprise.
