As a civilian, I really enjoy the style of a boonie. Because of that sun protection. My wife got me a really nice straw cowboy hat styled from Texas a while back and although I look a little silly in it, I am so grateful for the lack of sunburn on a regular basis.

FYI it's officially called the Dixie cup and was invented to help sailors in jungle environments because they could roll down the brim to release water and they could also roll it up to collect water and drink from it but i personally think sailor hat fits better because it's main purpose was for rain WATER when it was invented

It also held air fairly well, so if you fell overboard or abandoned ship, you could slap the dixie cup over the surface of the water and use it as a makeshift flotation device.

My Pops retired as a CWO3 in 1962. As polypropylene fleece hadn’t been invented, it was all natural fibers for that beanie (civie term). He always referred to it as a WATCH CAP EDIT: The 1st cover I always knew as The CrackerJack

The original knitted material cap is a watch cap the new beanie is made of fleece. There is also a version of the knitted watch cap with a brim, called a jeep cap or Radar cap.

You can still buy the milspec wool watch caps, Rothco make them. I have never served in the military, and I have known that particular type of garment as a 'watch cap' my entire life. Until the mid-to-late '90s, I associated 'beanie' purely with the hat that looks like a baseball cap with the bill cut off.

I love the marine patrol cap. I myself have not been in service but my grandfather in Korea was although he was in the Army he had a Marine cap that said “High” in it. I still wear everywhere I go in his remembrance.

I always took my Marine cover and put three folds in the bill. I first washed it after bleaching it to lighten the color and make it softer. 2nd I folded the bill in half. Then a fold about an inch in where the bill connects to the main body on e h side. That way it not only curved with my brow buy the sides coming down shaded my eyes a but from the parifery. It framed my eyes and in combination with my pectiption Oakleys looked fierce. Finally I ironed the flat panels with tons of starch.

@@illeagle9560 objectively they are terrible hats, outside aesthetic. They block ZERO sun, and not only do they not block rain, they actually HOLD rain against your head. They do the opposite of everything hats are supposed to do; they are the anti-hat. And yes, I've worn them in rain a number of times. Also, we weren't allowed to wear sunglasses in that uniform so we could all look the same, and it is HORRIBLE on my eyes.

Both the Army and Marine Corps "patrol covers" are ancient and the style/design dates back to the early days of their existence. In fact, they both wore almost identical covers in the 1860's. However, if you look at the Marine cover of the early 1900's, it was derived from a design cue from the 1830's era cover. Then they went to the Campaign (smokey) cover as their "utility/combat" cover, and somewhere around the mid 1940's, the cloth "utility/combat" cover arrived in the style known today.
