While I agree with your 5 points, I HAVE to say that the reason a lot of non-Japanese mangakas draw and write their stories from right to left is because of the traditional manga layout. Especially if their manga is published around the world and translated into Japanese, or whatever other language. Mangas that ARE Japanese, and translated into English, are not published from left to right in the Western style. All-in-all, the reason people create their page flow right to left is keeping to the manga tradition. We read the translated books from right to left anyway, so no harm, no foul.

i see where you're coming from but the only reason Japanese manga reads right to left is because its Japanese, and the creators and the audience are Japanese. the reading orientation in japan is right to left in the other western countries it's left to right so if your audience is NOT Japanese and you yourself are not, it doesn't make sense to do it, i don't think its "tradition".

@@ddmarkk Its an interesting subject, as a consumer and not a creator I can say that because of the number of Japanese comics I read I am more comfortable with the right to left format, and trying to read famous western comics always feels a little off. I do agree with the idea that fabrication of Japanese culture and setting simply because of someone's "fanboy" love for manga almost always feels cringy, but the right to left page flow may be better at appealing to an audience that has a large diet of Japanese manga. I don't know though, and honestly, the most important thing is the actual story and how the comic/manga presents itself. Great video, and very helpful.

I mean I usually draw from right to left and some people say it's wrong but a French guy made his own manga from right to left and got a award for international manga contest there is alot there are awards for people who try to do this

I don't think there's an issue with an English language comic being written from right to left if it's being drawn in a manga style and aesthetic. If you're doing that kind of work, your target audience is likely people who already consume manga, and even in the official English releases of those works they aren't being flipped to read left to right. I for one accidently read comics pages backwards a sometimes, because I'm so used to reading manga. Either direction is OK as far as I'm concerned, because at the end of the day it boils down to a formatting choice that doesn't actually have a major impact outside of aesthetic.

i get what you mean, but if your audience is not japanaese, theres no point. if you plan to go to japan and sell there, theres no point. besides professional companies wont take you seriously, as to them you'll just look like a fanboy/girl. but then again, its a free world do what you want.

@@ddmarkk true. I would go with whatever the industry standard is. If it's a personal webcomic type of work, do whatever you want. If it's actually being published by like dark horse, or something, it would probably need to be done left to right regardless.

I think that it's more than a formatting choice, it's 100% to do with read flow. Manga goes from right to left for the same reason that manga word bubbles are longer vertically, it fits how Japanese is written and read (top->down, right->left). English is read left->right then top->down and words in English are often longer horizontally so they often have to be chopped up to fit in a manga word bubble. If you write a manga intending it to be primarily read in English, you're forcing people to adopt two competing read flows to understand your manga and you're composing your pages in a way that works against your intended language. There is no advantage except to please people who can only read in English who are deep in subculture of reading translated comics.

2:22 too much facts, lately i've been re doing demon slayer's whole redlight district arc with different paneling, speech bubbles and angles to train and it helps so much. The composition and paneling of pages end up becoming better and better, even without references. Good video mark!

If manga readers in the U.S enjoy and have adjusted to reading right to left, why would someone want to publish there manga left to right even if they live in the U.S. The whole point is to appeal to manga readers.

Some top tier content right here 🔥🔥 I definitely think of my manga as shonen/ seinen, but you you bring up a really good point that giving your work a label can subconsciously put it into a box and limit the possibilities of the story. At the same time, it’s definitely good to be aware of the genres your story leans into like shonen/ seinen, and the tropes that come with it so you can actively try to avoid or even flip/ subvert it.

I agree with 95% of what your saying, but with tip number 4 i feel it depends on the the artist. Some might be able to work better with the right to left format because that’s what they’re used to seeing themselves. They might even plan on translating and publishing in other countries as well.

i get what you mean. its just from me looking into and researching the manga and comic industry in japan and in the west, you're less likely to be taken seriously by big companies if you do it and you're not Japanese. that being said, its a free world, you can do whatever you want

Some works that stood out to me: 12 ch manga" I had that same dream again" , 12 ch manga bibliomania, 80ish ch manwha The Boxer, Dandadan, and 126 ch manga hells paradise. Stories that tell the story they want to tell, compromises be damned.

I'm a perfectionist type of person so I haven't really started to make manga, but I have outlines of how I want the story to be. My manga is not set in Japan and will go all around the world and is mainly focused in an African inspired fantasy setting. I do think of my work as Shonen, but I won't be afraid to add my own spin when necessary

I was part of a team that tried to make a manga centralised around the idea of Esports, which at the time I thought was very cool considering that there was little to no manga covering the topic. But the head writer had tried to implement a love triangle, which felt very shoe-horned in. The love triangle was apparently supposed to represent the main character's inner turmoil of pursuing his dreams of becoming a full-time Esports player (Depicted by the enthusiastic and supportive female teammate) or choosing a more sensible but mundane and bland life (Which was depicted by your average "Never gonna be the one" Childhood friend). Although it was an okay concept, we felt that it wasn't needed to progress the plot and diverted the story away from the direction that we wanted to take it. We never ended up finishing the first volume, which is rather sad as I was very excited to see how it turned out.

This video is actually quite helpful and inspiring as someone who is starting out as a manga artist. When i pull out my Komi Can’t Communicate volumes to reference and learn how to half tone I find myself trying to copy the manga style too much like “oh every time there is a BG the character must have a thin white outline so it would stand out so that the char wouldn’t blend too much in the bg” and “oh the walls have these sketchy things i must add it in all the time” “the bgs must be super detailed so it looks natural” etc etc. I started forcing myself to try to make the backgrounds as realistic and natural as possible but often fail. After watching this video i decided to do my manga the way i like it and improve on it overtime. Thanks for this video!

I agree! This is very good advice that I think all new manga artists should take to heart. I feel especially on the point you made regarding story. I see many talented artists displaying their manga pages on social media but their story is terrible or lackluster. The pacing/panel layout/character development is not thought out. Or their narration gets way too involved with the details to the point that their base story is lost. New artists need to understand that story is just as - if not more important than the art itself...

I'm doing it right to left, but that's because I'm also writing it in Japanese. Yes. I'm translating it myself. No not with translate. I've been learning Japanese from my nan since I was 12. I'm not fluent though, so I need help with cultural nuances that I didn't get growing up as 1/2 in a different country. I could not begin to take on the nightmare of paneling left to right for English and right to left for Japanese. I do agree with the rest. The things people want to see are good stories. Different stories. Things that make life interesting. So never feel you need to do something because everyone else is doing it that way. If you really feel it vibes with the rest of what you're doing, do it. Chances are people will be happy for the change of pace.

A lot of mangas that won the international manga awards each year are written right to left. Just because your not Japanese doesn’t mean your not allowed to have it read right to left. Especially if you intend to publish it in Japan. Personally i’m planning to have my manga read right to left and have someone skilled at english and Japanese translations translate it for me. Plus the majority of people who read manga that are translated to english are used to the right to left formula. But great video btw, your points were really helpful.

Eh, I would half disagree about the 4th tip because it would feel to me that it really depends on the context on how you’re handling the setting that happens to start in a certain real world town in Japan without it actually being about Japan. There’s nothing inherently wrong with using a certain place to use as a real world setting they happens to be in Japan. My advice is to be sure to know your facts, do your research, learn that language or get a consultant and don’t follow what’s trending because me personally am not a fan of trends and trends do tend to die out fast. Unless the manga you’re making has a completely fictional setting that you’re likely going to have to make up unless you’re still planning to use real world settings as an influence to expand on the fictional setting. I understand some Japanese mangakas would love to see stories that’s not related to Japan but in my opinion you’re not always going to get to see other cultures based on the real world settings because again it really depends on what you’re looking for and what story it is but some stories will not always have real world cultures in them with a real world setting. However some fictional settings would probably use real world cultures as a influence. When DB Super uses words like “base form” something that has never been a thing before shows it’s clear what kind of audience they’re pandering to and that’s why I can’t get into Super. Not gonna lie I tried to make a story with a real world setting in Japan, Shibuya to be more specific as a starting point but only for a short while before shifting to the main plot in a completely fictional world in another universe for the remainder of the story. But of course I would not do much with the starting point without doing a lot of research and learning the language first. But I’ll do it because I want to make a story that I would want to read that interest me. So yes I half agree with the fourth point but half disagree and agree with most of everything. Anyway about the other point where it’s said not to focus too much on cool fights where you ignore the story. I can completely agree with that one and get behind it because that’s how I genuinely feel about Dragon Ball Super, it focuses way too much on fights, transformations and not trying to tell a compelling story, it comes off as cringe and very fan service-ish for the sake of fan service.

Actually, it is true. Especially the 4th mistake. One of the things that makes you like a cringe unprofessional artist is to make a manga story, you have to make a story related to Japan. Or follow the trends that are now in their country [coughcough*isekai*coughcough]. And that's silly. Manga art is another artstyle like anything else. Like the American Super heroes comics, the European graphic novels and such. Moreover, it is true that Japanese mangakas love to see story that are not related to Japan. They want to know, meet and read new cultures and countries and other people's mindsets outside of their homeland [Japan]. And there is no other good way than to show your culture of your country through comics or mangas or animes. Bros, don't make a story about Japan if you don't know the mindset of the Japanese people, or their culture or their language. Better yet, don't make a story about Japan, because, you're going to mess up. I know this because I made this mistake and everytime I remember my manga about Japan, I cringe myself. Like, "OMG what did I do that?!" Anyway, the point is: Make a story that you'd like to read. And if there is someone who likes your story, that's awesome! It means that you make something that everyone enjoy to read even if your art is not good enough.

I'm working in a story, is mainly an Adventure story. I satrted drawing some story-boards pages and I like my story, my world and my characters (I still working in it, but my base is set). MY problem are making the panels. I'm doing it left to right (it feels more comfartable too). But despite the direction the story is read... I have dificulties making the pages and the panels to refelct the scene I'm thinking of properly. Is kinda annoying :p Do you have a video to help make better panels? I go to a place where I learn Manga, (I've learn a lot) but I wanna hear other tips related to Panelling specially. Maybe you end up telling me the same as my teacher, but idk xd

for your paneling thing, I simply cant think of anything else but honestly to just read more manga/comics and really analyze the paneling within them. analyze how the panels are used, they way they flow and how much is contained within them. I believe once you understand how panels are used and completely taken advantages of by pros, you'll for sure start implementing what you observed in your own work.

I think the right to left format is frankly a matter of convention. Understandable why Japan does it but it can also be understood how a Middle Eastern country would do it too, because their language is read from right to left. That being said, artists can opt for whatever convention they deem fit, whether reading right to left or left to right, what matters is consistency.

I agree with the one that is when you're being to derivative of a story, I'm not sure if I'm doing the mistake, let me explain. Originally I made a hypothetical story that was way too derivative of AOT, I just gave up on it and started writing one that started in a place called nakijin village which is part of japan but in my story it is modified. But I don't want to be too derivative off of one source and want to put genuineness and authenticity to it

I think Since most people expect to read manga in the sites it's better to make the manga be read from right to left bcz otherwise readers feel very uncomfortable again that's based on my own personal experience..

The greatest Japanese artists broke those societal boundaries of stereotyped art, years ago. Which is why you can only count the number on both your hands. The differences are there, but new artists are still used to thinking that art is a set system, when it's not. Take his advice people. Break the chains of what the standard is and what the social norm thinks manga should be. Manga is just the Japanese word for comic. You're an artist/illustrator. So stop conforming to what the industry thinks it should be. Use it as a foundation but don't settle on it.

Well, my story does have a few of these "mistakes" (it's read from right to left, happens in Japan, MC is half-Jaoanese) but I hope that someday I would prove that these elements don't have to be flaws.

1: Yeah, a manga can look good with amazing art. But yeah, you need to make a manga as well. The good news is I am making a manga but I'm also improving in between pages and you need to be careful. The shots need to look right, the sound effects need to fit (and not cover the whole screen), same with the word bubbles and you need to follow the action. 2: Yeah, this is something a lot of people need to learn. What works for another may not work for you but hey, dead ends are mistakes, and you learn from mistakes. Another is that manga isn't the only form of media you can take inspiration from. There are plenty of comic artists you can take inspiration from. 3: It isn't a bad thing to show love to another form of material but yeah, stick to a culture you know. Hell, just make an alien world instead. Like me. My manga's set in another galaxy but has no humans. And I was not happy with how Robin Hood depicted the Scots. WE'RE NOT F*CKING CANNIBALS AND WE HATE ENGLISH ROYALTY! WHY WOULD WE HELP THEM?! 4: Try to be your own but don't follow someone else entirely. I've seen a lot of animations and cartoons but I really don't like black line art. So I went with Promare's direction and made my style no longer have black lines (unless necessary). 5: And this is one problem you MUST avoid! You can have cool stuff, I agree. Action and visuals will lure someone in. But you MUST. HAVE. A. STORY! This is something I saw in Red vs Blue Zero (not a manga but will back me up). The animation wasn't bad and the fight scenes were awesome... but the characters, humour and story was BULLSHIT! It was so fucking awful! The Raid Redemption wouldn't nearly be as awesome as it is if we didn't root for its cast and it did that. Sure the Raid is famous for its amazing martial arts choreography but the characters aren't cardboard and we got a simple story. Arcane is an amazing series with its animation. But it doesn't have many fight scenes and when they happen, they're pretty fucking awesome. But what makes us like them? The story and characters are... interesting! In other words, make a manga while improving, don't limit yourself to just manga, don't literally try to copy Japan, be inspired and push yourself and WRITE A GOOD STORY!!! My manga would suck if I hadn't learned the barebones of epic storytelling (likeable characters who evolve, a story to get invested in, twists and turns to keep it interesting while serving a purpose, no plotholes, amazing bad guys and a satisfying ending).

Revisiting this video, I gotta say the only thing I disagree with you is the reading direction convention. I get the context of why it is read from right to left but now that manga is published globally as its own category and format for everyone, who cares if the audience is Japanese or not and the format is read right to left? The rest are still solid, and the part about the setting of your plot and countries of origin of the authors was actually a good point considering not everyone is familiar with a certain culture. And even if you were fully familiarized with the foreign culture, showing these Japanese artists eager to see mangas made in a non-Asiatic setting really got me to think a lot. It's a helpful tip.

Practicing art is fine, but doing comics means you gotta "train while doing." That's what I did with my first web series. It wasn't good. But now I'm redoing it after learning a fuckton about storytelling (I'm a published scifi, fantasy, Lovecraftian horror author). I'm pretty happy with the results so far!

for posing and composition go copy a bunch of artists who do it the way you like, but instead of straight up copy, break it down and understand the thought process, then repeat this alot and also watch a couple yt tutorials.

Hey, making a right to left English manga makes sense because if you get big, it will be translatable to Japanese. People who already read manga are accustomed to this format already so it's not a problem. However, Japanese manga readers are not accustomed to a left to right format with horizontal font. So they are not clowns.

Hey DD mark, have u seen the 2020 Anime Sing Yesterday for Me, it's only 12 eps, no season 2, it's the whole story. It's the epitome of telling a good story. It was written 20 years ago, it was relevant then, it's relevant now, and it'll be relevant 20 years from now. Highest of recommendations. Stories don't necessarily need to be original or flashy, what matters is that they have passion behind them and it can resonate in some shape or form. SING YESTERDAY FOR ME anime hits like I want to eat your Pancreas or Erased, this anime in my opinion is better than the manga.

With the dialogue and story element I feel like those are often awful in popular manga/anime as well so I don't really think that matters that much, even though I wish it did. Although these are good tips for someone who actually cares about making a GOOD manga, they're just not all necessary to have a successful one sadly.

Go for it! sounds great! as for the reading orientation; ask yourself one question, where would the physical books realistically be published? if the answer is not japan then go for left to right. but then again, do whatever you want.

This video is almost spot on!!. And that point about fanboish attitude is verry true and doesnt get talked bout enough. Its funny how Japanese mangaka's include other culture into their stories. Even at times basing their whole manga on another culture whereas most of the outside of Japan, non japanese aspiring creators base their whole manga model almost entirely on a shounen, Japan sentric model. I get why they do and its understandable why they want it that way but yh. I thought I was the only one who thought this was a slight issue. Like its not an issue, issue. But it is restrictive of one's creativity. People need to understand that manga is just a "MEDIUM" through which you can tell any story of anywhere you like. I also think its cringe sometimes. But I dont want to discourage the artist. But as for read orientation, I dont think its that deep.

No, theres no hard rules, what i meant by 3 is more about doing the proper research and not just do something cause your a fan. for example, having your story set in japan and then all the customs, cultures and mannerisms in your work is based off what you see in anime. does that make sense. you can do whatever, so long as you do your due diligence and do the proper research
