Great tips ! It is funny that I watched your video today because this morning I took my 416 CAT loader/backhoe to move a 40 ft box parts trailer . I put the bucket under the fifth wheel and started to raise it. It has about 4 ton of stuff in it and I saw really quick that the tires needed air ! Thank you again!! Another good show ! A fully raised bucket with a heavy load has a potential to roll the machine when turning suddenly & is a common sight. Another mistake beginner's make when approaching a pile of dirt/gravel etc is they push the bucket all the way in at the bottom of the pile & expect it to lift it straight up effortlessly. Heck ,a Cat 994 will even have trouble ! One suggestion is go in at the bottom about a third of the way ,at the same time raise the bucket & continue driving into the pile while also crowling the bucket in. It sounds confusing/daunting but comes naturally eventually & must be done with even synchronisation. I don't know if this has been covered on this channel yet or there's a better way as I'm new here . I've seen the biggest Cat loaders operating in the mining industry in Central Queensland operating with under inflated front tyres day after day ,even though they're attended to by a service unit every 12 hours, go figure !!!

Helpful - especially for the beginner. The bucket raised too high may be the most important. I have operated a kubota for over 20 years. I experienced the bucket situation. I was backing up and not paying attention to the bucket because my hand was not on the bucket controller. As I backed up I was looking backward. The bucket control had stuck in the up position when I began backing up. Quicker than one can say holy crap, the tractor and I were on our side. Very dangerous. I was lucky. I have also seen rookies on construction sites running with a full bucket 8-10 feet in the air and they tip. Good video.

I don't understand raising the FEL way up over the top of the window, regardless of curling or not. The Kubota specifically says don't raise above the glass. And I don't.

Kubota did have a feature on their factory loaders for self leveling on the 5040. Nice feature. I use suitcase weights for ballast on the 3 point. Stick a lift arm drawbar thru the hand holds then a bolt on either side to stop the sliding from side to side. Wrap a bungee around them if you want to stop the clanking. Mine have a 3/4 hole towards the bottom so I use a piece of 1/2" all thread and some washers with self locking nuts to keep them tight. I grab mine with the quick hitch.Then I set them down, they will stand by themselves.

I know they now have a self leveling feature on the grand L60 but it is pricey. I wouldn't mind having some old suitcase weights for a ballast on the 3 point. I was at a auction and saw some big weights but they brought more than new price.

thegreener a simple counter weight is a garbage can with a cross rod the dia of your 3 point and filled with concrete, arr a bar out the top to connect to the top link !!! Cheap and easy !!!

Your setup is well researched and logical. For instance, I cringe at fellow you tubers buying something like a root grapple instead of your log grapple. We must understand these vlogs are subjective. Just because your making a Vlog don’t mean you know more then the guy looking at it. We do this to learn and hopefully there’s something to be learned by other’s experience . Much of this is common sense, and much of it can be found in the owners manual, Me? I know little, but I’m slow and cautious in the 6 yrs I’ve owned my tractor. I grew up with absolutely no exposure to tractors, dirt poor and worked for the very first hamburger I ever had, you get the idea. So when I bought my Kubota L4701, 4wd with 6 ft implements and working cruise, the price points pushed me to a larger more formidable model. There has been a lot to learn, both in safe operation and especially maintenance. I have learned to do all my own maintenance. What have I learned to this point? Maintenance is everything , it’s also not cheap due to the capacity’s on oil, filters, HST, Hydraulic filters/fluid. Etc. But truly a labor of love

I like #4.. I once drove a 12-ton mining front end loader. It could lift I think a few cubic yards of dirt and the bucket went up about 12-15' in the air. Let me tell you that thing rocked with the bucket up that high! I dared not drive like that but what an experience to feel it rock even just a little!

I'll add another. Pulling something with a chain/cable attached to the loader. Seen several videos lately of guys logging use a chain on the FEL to pull backwards logs out of the woods. That log hangs on something, and the power/weight of the tractor can easily damage the loader...it's meant to lift (where the hydraulic limit the amount), not pull.

been there done that, well for some of those. my horse is green(1025R) and once i forgot to lock in the I-Match...so long tiller...also once forgot too (i was a novice) curl the bucket when raising the load...got a head, face, and lap full of dirt. thankfully i was not hurt! good vid! hope people learn from this.

#1- not putting the tractor into low gear when pushing into a pile or performing hard work #2- keeping the tractor in 4 wd when it's not necessary #3- trying to move rocks and stumps by bashing into them with the blade #4- hard turns with heavy loads on the forks #5- being under the bucket when it's raised

@Rob Yep. It really isn't hard. It takes five minutes, max, to learn. Twenty minutes ,max, to master. I switched to Kubota. I got it two days ago. On the first day I did the side entrances of our garage. Took me half an hour to drop ten buckets and back drag it. Second day. I drop and drag and box grade my four-hundred foot driveway in a little over an hour.

Matt Nothing wrong with keeping tractor in 4 WD !!! It is there when you need it!!! Small tractors pull nothing without 4 wheel drive !!!

Or just leaving the loader or backhoe UP in the air. ANY implement should not only be on the ground but once the machine is shut off ALL hydraulics should be bled off. In other words move the stick in all directions so NO pressure is left. Good for machine and for safety.....

I had the same thought. Thinking back to high school gym classes arm curls were done with arms down and curled up and then repeat. Probably one of those terms that remains vague? Example. I hear unthaw frozen items all the time. But dies that not you plan to freeze something when you unthaw it?

Self leveling is nice , not necessary but nice :). Side note, it doesn't work with every attachment (in my experience with my kioti rx6010 ) it works with the bucket it came with but I have a set of pallet forks that I believe will stay level, but the level indicator rod doesn't work with them and so if you use that you should be aware of that and pay close attention so you don't end up snapping a fork or damaging something

Good tips for those who never ran anything with a loader before.... I do chuckle at the last one with the ballast the first attempt was in 2 wheel drive second one was in 4-wheel drive tractor rear end still lifted about the same amount that little bakblade really did not make much of a difference for weight

Mistake number 2 - running with the loader too high. A young boy that I went to school with (back in the 70's) was killed that way. Bucket in the air, turned, top-heavy, rolled in a ditch.

That is terrible. I made this hoping that it could save someone from having an accident. It is my most watched video. Sometimes I get some negative comments, but some people just don't realize that they are putting their self in danger by the way they operate their tractor. I see other youtubers doing some things that look sketchy.

Javier years ago a guy was killed across the street from us. was picking rocks and on the way to the truck decided to start raising the bucket of rocks so it was ready to dump, went into a small depression, rolled the tractor on top of him !!!! took time to get something to pick tractor off him when they did he was dead. one other thing that should be mentioned but not just related to loaders is keep KIDS and others OFF the tractor !!!! about 200 people a year are killed on family farms, mostly kids !!! Years back the editor of the Small Farm Journel Magazine lost his son when the neighbor was giving kids a ride went into a hole and rolled the tractor and his son was crushed under the tractor !!!!! sad!!!! yet you see people riding kids on everything from lawn mowers to a Big Bud tractor !!!!

We now own and live on the 224 acre farm that I grew up on. I have seen farmers for years doing their field work with the loaders on and raised all the way in the air. I was always taught that you always run with the loader in a low position. Especially when carrying a load. I used to work for a guy that got killed on his tractor trying to move something heavy and unbalanced. The chain slid to one side of the loader bucket and flipped the tractor on top of him.

I know of an guy that is close to 80 and he runs around with the loader 5' off the ground going do the road. The loader arms are sticking up in his windshield. When he makes hay he runs it even higher. He could remove the loader from the tractor for making hay but doesn't. That is awful that guy you worked for was killed that way.

I have watched employees make all of these mistakes. Our first tractor had a large dent in the hood from a chunk of wood going over the back of the bucket. Do you have ballast in your tires? Our kubota has 650lbs of beet juice in each rear tire. Makes the tractor very stable.

You missed the two most important things! Putting side pressure can destroy a loader, also hitting something to hard will destroy your loader.

I used to operate professionally and learned as a boy. That said, it would be very easy to make a mistake like those shown in the video. In fact there are quite a few KZbin videos where people are carrying heavy loads on loaders way too far above the ground for safety. Once the bucket is above the ground that's all the high tonight for carrying heavy object. Thanks again for a great video.

I really cringe when I see people running too high with the loader, especially on a subcompact tractor. Those little tractors have such a short wheelbase and are so narrow it does not take much to roll them. Then a lot of the time the don't have a ballast which makes things worse. Make sure theres a heavy rear weight or the tractor can seesaw on the front axle then flip over on the pivoting front axle when lifting at one corner or downhill!!

Does that Kubota have a small hydraulic pump, or are you intentionally making small movements? They seemed a bit slow. And its 2017, why Kubota still makes loaders that aren't self-leveling? Anyway, you got good points there.

Thanks. The pump is on par with comparable sized tractors. The tractor is 5 years old. The new models have an optional self leveling loader.

Check your lug nuts and wheel bolts regularly for proper torque. If you don't, the wheels will chuck and ruin your rims and lugs. Seen it happen tom many of customer's tractors. Expensive fix!

bent the bucket/grapple curling pistons 3 time back dragging or pulling down limbs with the pistons extended partially or full on a kubota L4060 805 FEL expensive replacement /repair. Once only 2 hrs. usage after rebuild using it "carefully". 400hrs at other times clearing logging tops.

Some manuals have a maximum angle that you should not go past when you are back dragging. Do you have KTAC? It should have covered it.

Yeah you can prune the lower branches but that just puts the fruit up higher creating another safety issue of people having to use much taller ladders to pick the fruit !!!! 2 steps foreward and one step back !!!!

Thanks! The tractor has auto throttle advance. So when the more I press on the hydro pedal the faster it speeds the engine up. If I am doing a lot of repetitive loader work I speed the engine up. I keep the dusty bunnies blown out of it.

Ha. I have a neighbor that bought a small tractor to use with a finish mower and a rotary cutter. Was mowing with his bucket lifted above eye level. Says he cant see?? I mentioned to him that he can get away with that maybe on a real flat surface but dont cut on your slopes or you'll roll over. What did he do..no he didnt roll over..he sold is new tractor and replaced it with a zero turn mower and hires his brush cutting done. Scared him I guess. My biggest mistake is the underinflated tires. Once I rolled a front tire off in the snow. I used a ratchet strap around the tire and got it to reseal when I aired it up.

For ballast, that scraper is still too light. I like a concrete block, about 20 '' X 20 " X 20", with a heavy eyebolt coming out the top for lifting on and off a rigid hitch. The block sits in close to the rear of the machine, unlike a scraper, and it puts a good deal of weight on the ground for more traction. It also is far heavier than whatever is in the loader bucket.

Yeah that blade is too light for heavy lifting. Those logs are my ballast for the heavy stuff. I chain them to my forks. I plan on making a ballast that is adjustable with a max weight in the 1200-1400lb range. I use the log ballast in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/injXaZqOarmcnJY

Dropped a load of firewood on the hood of my BX. Good news, no one was hurt. Bad news, had to buy a new plastic hood. I then passed this knowledge on to a fella who also bought a Kubota BX. He dropped a load of rocks onto his hood. LOL

Robert Cline It appalls me that they do not incorporate self leveling into these loaders. The 5040 has a selector lever on the valve body for the loader that does just that. Westendorf does it hydraulicly also but you don't get the choice. Mechanical self leveling increases lifting capacity on the same loader.

I don't really see how having a ballast would take weight off the front axle. It just adds weight to the rear tires

With weight hanging on the 3 point, the rear axle is the fulcrum point, so it will unload the front.

On open cab never put you hand on the ROP when turning in your seat and backing up,same as a forklift. Only a matter of time before you lose some fingers or crush your hand. And don't ever ever never step over a pto when the machine is running whether it's engaged or not.

Good points! My Dad told me about a guy that was driving a tractor with and had a hand on the fender. He tire chains on the tractor and the chain picked up a stick. I think the guy lost a finger or two.

#6 while doing loader work don't rely on your auto throttle as you were for RPMs for hydraulics rev it up man at least to 1800 for any loader work max power comes from 2400 RPMs but can get a bit intimidating by the speed of the hydraulics

Putting water in back tires is best ballast possible. Anything on the 3 point hitch is added weight.

Water is good if you live in a warm climate. If you use your tractor with a loader, you still need more ballast than fluid in the tires. Both tractors in the videos have fluid in their tires.

Any once else notice how his numbe 1 list mistake he did in every clip but the last, and curling while lifting depends on what your are lifting and your end goal, tire pressure is dictatced less by what you are lift and more so the terrain your working in if your working on concrete yes inflats them up if your running in soft soil you may want to deflate them to keep from sinking

i hate to say this -while u made a pretty good video-but i feel 100% u left out and off a very important attachment on the tractor-if the loader is on. a ballast box-or something heavy on the 3 pt. even though u did not show the rear of tractor while lifting the skid of wood--it would of been way better with it on-ok. just my 2 cts. but jeepers-if ur wanting to show the world safety things to do with a loader-please-please include the ballast to go along with it-ok. thanks.

#1 on the countdown was no ballast, I showed using a heavy rear blade. I did not show the rear of the tractor while lifting the wood because that portion was about tires under inflated. I wanted people to be able to see the tire bulging. I did have the rear blade while lifting pallet FWIW.

Inflate tires to specs of the vehicle they are on, NOT to the readings on the sidewall of the tire itself. Big difference between the two.

I should have been more clear on that. What is on the sidewall can vary greatly from what the manufacturer recommends.

Wrong! The sidewall specs take priority over what the tractor's manual says. If the load is too great at the tire's rated PSI, then you need a higher rated tire, or you are simply overloading the tractor. Never exceed the tires maximum PSI rating--no matter what the tractor specs might say.

How many? I just purchased a tractor and that was one of the first things they mentioned when they knew I was getting a loader. The second thing was loading the tires (which is what I went with). They make money off of that. I am not sure why they wouldn't mention it. I went to my local Deere - they mentioned it. I went to my local Yanmar - they mentioned it. I went to my local Kubota - they mentioned it.

On a diesel keep rpm's hi , i believe it's 15,000 or higher especially when the is engine is under any load. This insures good hydraulic oil flow

Kabota is extemly expensive and they don't come with a self bucket leveling device like so the other manufacturers? My John Deere levels the bucket on its own as u raise it up so you don't have to curl it down

Where do you live? I was going to buy a Deere. I didn't because it was more expensive than the comparable Kubota that came with a loader, box grader, quick attach, finish mower, and eighteen foot trailer. The Kubota came in at a little under twenty. The Deere, with the loader, was twenty-eight... no attachments.

The scrapper blade is still not enough rear ballast for the loads the tractor is capable of handling. A box blade with some added tractor weights would be safer. Otherwise, good tips for the tractor novice.

That scraper blade is heavier than y box blade and it is longer so it is a better. My ballast for heavy stuff is the logs I picked up chained to my rear forks.

Revving the tractor up does not give you much more power. You can still porduce max pressure at idle. You get more GPM for faster cycle times.

Travis B I was using a Massey 5410 which is about 100 hp and a 7ft bucket on the front taking nearly 1 tonne and it didn't like lifting it to great and I just put it to 1500 revs and it picked it up a lot easier and faster but other brands will have different designs! And masses use alo loaders!

I've seen guys do that. One that comes to mind is a guy with a grapple ramming into stuff. People don't understand how much of a shock load that is. That is like people jerking on a chain when they go to pull something out.

Jeffery biggest mistake I see is when people loading grevel etc into a bucket failing to roll the bucket back as they raise and load the bucket, resulting in a half filled bucket !!!

You are talking about proper ballast. That grader blade helps, but is NOT proper ballast. Your loader can lift about 1,800 lbs. Your tractor should have about 800-1200 lbs of ballast on the hitch when doing loader work. Yes. Even if your tires are loaded.
