My most awkward band moment was at the beginning of band camp, where our brass tech was getting kinda pissed at us bc some of us werent following directions well, so he made us drop and do pushups. It wasnt until after this whole ordeal that we realized that the news people were there with us. the entire thing, him yelling, us dropping, everything, was being aired live on television. *whoops.*

One of the most awkward experiences I’ve had in band is when I made 2nd chair all region for my city and idk if this is a common thing but the top few chairs get to go to all region orchestra where you play with an actual orchestra with violins and stuff. We all rode in some school owned suvs with three rows of seats and I got put in the very back. All by myself. I was trying to talk to people and have normal conversations but no one could hear my because I was so far back so I raised my voice. They still couldn’t hear me so I got a little louder and one of the kids turns around and said, “Dude shut up!” Turns out they could hear me the entire time and I almost cried.
@imluke2244 жыл бұрын
Another thing that happened there was that the staff was supposed to send us the music so we could learn it but they forgot to send it to the percussionists so we were trying to sight read some pretty difficult music and the conductor got super mad because he thought we were just stupid. We eventually told him and he apologized and told the rest of the band that we were sight reading so they wouldn’t think we were stupid too. We ended up doing really well on the concert even though we only had two days to work on it.

We had a lady confront our director saying we were playing too loud during our lot warm-up. We were 1) on school grounds. 2) Warming up close to another drumline. 3) Going to play louder until she left. It was awkward to watch our director essentially explain that living close to a school with a top tier marching band program would mean music would eminate from the premises.

I used to live across the street from my local high school. So I got to hear the marching band practice every evening when it was warm enough or not raining. Never bothered me until the director decided the horn line needed to practice one break over and over for the entire two hours they were out there. They played the whole section. Then eight bars. Then four bars. Then two specific bars over and over and over. They played with a metronome. They played it without a metronome. They played it with snares. They played it without snares. After an hour and a half I got in the car and went for an ice cream cone and when I got back, they were finally done. They must have sorted it out because they won at state finals that year.

In my first winter concert freshman year, I had a solo snare roll at the beginning of our first song....I proceeded to get my stick caught in my sleeve and it fell very loudly on the wood floor. My percussion director won't let me forget about it.

In middle school band, there was only two of us in the percussion section for my grade (small school). For our spring concert, somehow 4 of our 6 pieces got left in the band room and we didn't realize until after we played the first song. I have no idea how this happened but we just made up the parts for all the pieces we had forgotten and our band director never asked us anything about it. Funny story about that band director, he once had us clean off the stage before a concert and there was a projector on a cart he told us to put behind the back door because he told the janitors to move it previously. What we didn't know is the back door led straight down a long staircase. It was extremely dark and the school was over 100 years old. Needless to say, the projector shattered into a million pieces.

My most awkward band moment (Ik I’m late but suck it up): I’m a double reed player, so in high school during marching season, so I chose to go into the electronics section in the drumline. Well… it was the beginning of full band camp and I was fully recovered from a finger injury and was ready to get to work. I was taught how to use a soldering iron the week before when I had a finger splint on so I didn’t do it, but some of the XLR cords were messed up so I had to go back it and fix it. While I was doing that the other electronic members found sanitizing alcohol and a lighter in the Front Ensemble room. I saw the look on their faces and I tried to get them to stop thinking about it but before I knew it they poured alcohol on the floor and started a fire in the Front Ensemble Storage Room. I witnessed all of this while I was fixing a snake cable on the soldering iron.

As a sophomore in my high school symphonic band, we were recording a very lengthy piece where going back and recording another take was not an option. I was playing timpani and accidentally dropped a mallet during a very quiet moment. My band director managed to glare at me throughout the rest of the piece while still conducting without missing a beat. Then at the end he told everyone "not bad, there were some moments" while still giving me the stink eye. I could have died.

In my first year of marching in DCI, our caption head had chosen a lot spot in front of what appeared to be an abandoned gas station. So with this, we marched over, set up our warmup location and started drumming. About 20 minutes into our lot session, a car pulled up and an older gentleman got out. He then violently approached our staff and started screaming at them that were on his property and to get off of it immediately. In fact the guy was acting so aggressively that he got nose to nose with our caption head and almost kicked a Long Ranger. As a result, we had to stop drumming and move to a new location to continue the lot.

When I was a sophomore as a tenor saxophone, we were coming back from our break and we had less than a minute to put on our jackets and get everything ready. Being hyped and anxious, I grab my neck strap and tried putting it on. However, it fell down onto the bleachers and on my foot. I sighed in relief and went to grab it when the strap slipped off my foot and under the bleachers. With 10 seconds left, I looked around and just grabbed my saxophone to play along with the band in the Final Countdown. After that, I took the walk of shame and went to grab my neck strap. I think at least half the band watched me grab it and come back up. Luckily, it wasn’t that rare and happened often enough. P.S. - We need more awkwardness!!! More!! I love this mini series!

Most awkward moment for me? My drumline was practicing, and then out of nowhere a lady drove up to us and complained that her baby was trying to sleep and told us to quiet down, and then drove away. After that, every time we rehearsed outside at night, we kept wondering if that lady was going to show up and complain at us.

There's this one field that we use that always gets complaints. We've had the cops called on us numerous times for being too loud, a guy has came one time and screamed obscenities and death threats to the chaperones because we were too loud, and the cherry on top, this woman parked her car in front of our field and honked her horn for 45 minutes because we were too loud.
@CheckeredX304 жыл бұрын
That is absolutely insane! There was a house next to our practice field at my high school and the only thing between them and us was a thin tree line. We always got compliments despite how terrible we actually were at times.

@@CheckeredX30 oh, 99.9% of people love us, it's just this one facility that someone hates us. I like to think that it's just been one person the whole time complaining. ahhh awkward stories... i remember it clearly. day 4 of band camp my freshman year i had a doctor's appointment that i needed to leave practice like 10 minutes early for. it got time for me to leave and i got my stuff but the band director had called everyone to the field to make an announcement and i couldn't leave. 2 minutes into his speech my mom pulls up next to the practice field and honks her horn. the band director told us that whoever that is shouldn't be up near the practice field and my mom wouldn't leave even after i texted her to go back to the high school parking lot where she can pick me up (our practice field is behind the middle school, which is connected to the side of the high school which is the back parking lot where we get picked up). The speech ends and my mom is pissed i didn't come over so we could leave, and we were told whoever's mom it is to not go with her as she shouldn't be up there. I walk past to go to the trail that leads to my high school in a group, and my mom keeps honking at me. when i reach a certain point and all the kids are on the trail SHE GOES INTO DRIVE AND STARTS DRIVING BEHIND EVERY SINGLE KID GOING TO GO GET PICKED UP. she kept honking and everyone decided to spread out and walk super slow just to be petty. she got super close to running everyone over and they all kept talking about how she shouldn't have been up there and i had to embarrassingly tell everyone that it was my mom. we reached the parking lot after i rushed down there to save myself from embarrassment and she picks me up at the parking lot and starts yelling at me until one of the trumpet players comes by to tell her that she isn't allowed to be up at the practice field and she answers nicely to him that she knew. she rolled her window back up and yelled at me until i cried all the way to our appointment and at the doctor's office i cried through the whole appointment. probably the most embarrassing thing ive had to go through tbh.

I assure you that my awkward story is WAY WAY worse than any old "I fell with my drum on" or anything else. Without a doubt, this is the single most embarrassing experience in my life. Band camp of freshman year of High School. I'm nervous. Surrounded by 150+ people I have never met before. So on Thursday we have full ensemble in the gymnasium so that means the entire band is in the same room with me. I realize, crap. I left my sheet music in my dorm! Not to worry, there's a PDF in the group chat. While the Band Director is discussing something with the woodwind and brass, I make the HORRIBLE mistake of taking my phone out to pull it up. I'm entirely focused on my phone when I realize that some people around me are looking at me. I look up and the ENTIRE FREAKING ENSEMBLE OF STRANGERS IS STARING AT ME. The BD had called me out in front of everybody and I didn't have the balls to say I was trying to pull up my music so I just squeak out a "yes" when he asks if I understand. He then goes "I can't hear you!" so I have to shout "YES!" across the gymnasium which absolutely killed me inside. He then told me to run two laps after practice just to rub some salt into the would.

My high school was done performing in a winter show, so we walked around to watch some of the other groups warm up. We found this group we knew called “Rise Percussion,” and decided to go watch them. The practice zones were clearly marked with bright green tape. They started doing warmups with drill in that tight space, and the quads kept coming closer and closer to the edge. My four friends and I were just kind of standing about 3 or 4 feet from the edge in case someone came out, and sure enough, a quad player stepped out of the zone. But the strange thing was that he stopped doing the drill and just casually walked over to us, with his quads still on. He just walked over to say hi to my friend, who just so happened to be in Rise, but wasn’t performing.

My awkward band moment was probably in high school. I was in the drumline, and our customink shirts came in. And for whatever reason, we all decided to change into them right away in the drum closet; and I do mean ALL. We had one girl on the line, and I was finished changing, and I'm about to go out to the field or wherever, and I'm just face to face with her, in the middle of changing, was a split second but felt much longer. I hurried out to the field and tried to repress what I saw.

We hadn't practiced that much, to be honest, so when we got to one spot in the song, I couldn't remember whether our pianist (who was leading us) had taken out my eight bars of rest or not. I can't even remember how that went down, but it wasn't awful. We definitely didn't win, but I was SO glad that my mom never was able to get tickets to go!

I was playing in my schools front ensemble my freshman year, all of the freshman start in the front ensemble and can then move to battery after. So there’s this one kid that did sound that’s super nerdy, but doesn’t know anything. We were in a classroom learning our show one day in band camp and the director (a more serious guy during marching season) was checking us off for shirt sizes and this kid walks in and comfortably and openly says “Smoke Weed Everyday” while he was right next to the director, and then walks away. Every single person including myself in the front ensemble had our hands over our mouths in shock, but the director apparently didn’t hear anything, or he just accepted the fact that freshmen are uncontrollably childish. But he walks away after several seconds and we all burst out laughing at what just happened. Awkward but more hilarious.

This was awkward at first, but it paid off in the end. Also I know this is really late, but I don’t give two craps. My story: Last night was my band’s first football game performance of the year. But it’s also our first performance in our uniform. And because of COVID the freshman and sophomores never wore the uniform EVER until now, so they didn’t know ANY procedures we do on those days from start to finish. Even though I’m not a section leader, I’m a veteran member of the band and I knew what game day was like from start to finish. So I arrived at school at 7:30 in the morning (keep in mind school doesn’t start until 8:40) and met up with my section leaders. One of them was a sophomore and didn’t know game day procedures so he was just following the others around. I went to go and get the rack that had our section’s uniforms on it and brought it to them. I told the sophomore section leader what to do because the others were busy with other responsibilities they had because of their roles in the band. It was about 7:45 when the other members of our section started to arrive, and they were all either freshmen or sophomores. So I went to every person, got their uniform off the rack, tell them how to put it in their garment bag, and help them put it back (yes I practically did this to every person I could). Before I knew it only 3 people (one wasn’t me) didn’t show up yet and put their uniforms into their garment bags and the bell rang to signal 10 minutes before class started (8:30). I rushed to start setting up for in-class rehearsal and managed to help setting up a little bit. The section leaders didn’t mind me being late to setup because I was helping the newer members get their uniforms together smoothly so they were all out there on time. Fast forward to game time, we were done with dinner and we had to put our bibs on (think of it as overalls, but not made from jeans and they’re pants with a zipper in the front). People kept getting confused on what was the front and what was the back of the uniform, so I made sure they knew while the section leaders were doing inspection. The girls in our section had to put their hair up in buns, a couple knew how to do it, and the others did not. I saw they had their materials, but they didn’t know how to do it, so I just told them because it was just a game they didn’t need to have it perfect, but to just make a regular but neat bun and put bobby-pins where hair sticks up. One girl in particular did not have a good time doing that, her hair was everywhere and I hated to see her struggle so I offered to do her hair for her. It might’ve been a little rough (especially since I didn’t have any hair spray) but it was good enough for a halftime performance. We walked over to the stadium (it was across the street) and we got to the spot where we set up and rehearse during the first and second quarter. When the second quarter was almost over we put the rest of our uniform on, and the rest of of our uniform consisted of a long sleeve shirt and a small jacket with shoulder padding, and each had a zipper on the back. When I finished putting mine on, I went around and helped 6 people zip up the rest of their uniform. Now, in our uniforms we have what we call snaps, which are little buttons on our jacket and shirt that clip together so they don’t move around as much. I helped another 3 people find their snaps and clip them in. When we got on the field we had a great performance, but here’s a catch. We have never gone over after-performance procedures. Meaning we have never practiced getting off the field in a fast and timely manner. So what I did was unplug everything immediately when the electronics were muted, gathered up cables so everyone can just push and go (yes if you haven’t figured it out I’m in the Front Ensemble). We got off the field in time, and the cable were all over the place. While people were getting their stuff from the stadium, because I already had my stuff, I started putting the cables away neatly so we wouldn’t have to worry about it later. We moved back to school and walked back to the stadium and met the other school’s front ensemble like we did back in 2019 (of course this time we were masked and properly socially distanced). When we got back to the stands my feet were cramping nonstop, and because of all the help I provided the section leaders from start to finish, the head section leader let me sit for the rest of the game and stretch my feet. When we got to back the school when the game was over I helped others properly put away their uniforms so they could go home. Then when I was about to go home, I realized how much stuff I had. I’m originally a bassoon player, so I had my bassoon case, my backpack, my drawstring bag for my clothes, my garment bag, and my water jug. I didn’t have enough hands on my body to carry all of that to my moms car, so someone from the FE saw and helped me carry my stuff to my mom’s car. I guess you can say I got reward for helping people with their uniforms throughout the day, but that last bit of help was really appreciated because it was 10:30 at night and they still stopped and helped me. I’m glad I’m a part of my band and Fromt Ensemble :).

My addition to awkward band moments- I play base drum and my sister is the sole snare drum( our line is only 5 kids cause small school), and we were going through a football game performance. We were all hitting the loud ending quarter notes at the end of a song when her stick snaps, flys, and hits a me in the shin. My sister had no drop sticks left in her bag because she loves brakes sticks and our percussion instructor loves stealing sticks to break with the gock block. So, when she had to play the rest of the show(which thankfully was only 18 bars left of music) with one hand, and it didn't even sound that bad. When we got of the field I grabbed an ice bag from the band stand and all was good, because I could now yell at my sister about it forever.

2003 i marched in a drum corps, on bass 4th. During a marching technic rehearsal, the whole corps were in a small gym since the weather was bad outside. We were in layers if circles and of course, bassline were in the most outside ring next to contras and baris. I felt bad caused by too much mik and yogurt in the morning and too many watermelon on the day before combined with pasta and cheese... I silently released tons if gas , real silent during that horline were doing breath in 8 and blow 4. Nobody could act about that but I was 1000% guaratee the smell was my 2nd wost in my life. Even myself felt how terrible it was plus the pracetice drill were a box excercise, the gas was moving around with me but it all everywhere in that square. Relax! After that word from instructors, everyone in basses and low brasses looked around and talk about that smell Some tried to see people’s shoes as uf they stepped on some sh1t I just pretended looking around like them, they endup thought it was from a toilet close to that gym leaked in by airshaft in the celling above our sections. Bassline used our drum on our body as a fan to blow away that smell and finally it was gone. Everyone thaked us on doing that especially me on a big one and moved strongly “thanks dude, without you we need to swallow that sh1t again, you made it gone”.... sure, coz i just squeezed my ass for the rest tried not to again. No, not yet finished, After that, a sectional. During a small break between excersices, i asked my tech that I seriously need to go to a restroom but he said no. So, i kept playing and again, couldn’t hold that gassy monster anymore. I slowlyyy released it off my ass along with drumming. Soonly, i guessed that half of the room fiiled with that same smell ...... “you should go as soon as we pause “ my tech whispered to me during playing. Then we paused and i ran out of that room. I think everyone could guess what had happened for the whole afternoon.

I didnt want to make my friend (bass 1) march on the grass so instead on marched on the grass and tripped over a tree root. I only scraped my knee but later a 10th grader asked me if i was ok and i was super awkward because i used to like him. I was in front of all of the 8th graders.

That was great that you played at the funeral. Many people treat events like that as a celebration of the person's life so it was totally appropriate.

My most awkward moment was something I didn't realize until after it already happened. So during pep band, the band is encouraged to move around and dance as you play the pieces. After like 8 pep band games, I sort of got into the habit of bobbing up and down as I played. Well one day we have a school walk through, thats basically where whenever someone gets to state in any extra curricular activity, the school celebrates it and the band plays the fight song as the group that made it to state walks down the halls. So we do one of those, and for some reason I naturally due to force of habit, danced up and down while playing my sax for this. And I didn't think anything of it. Until I saw it on the band Facebook page, you can see the walk through, and there's me, the only one moving around, while everyone else is in that strict marching band look.

The words “Band and awkward” go hand in hand. I have many stories, but most recently, I’m the coach for a high school drumline here in Nevada. We were at the Nevada day parade (look it up- wild!!). We went to go watch the univ. of nv- Reno drumline warmup and a guy in the parade with horses told their d-line instructor they were told loud- disturbing the horses. I went to that coach and said the horse guy is INSANE- has he never been to this parade?!? We have multiple navy jets flying over followed by low hovering army helicopters, police and fire sounding their sirens in the parade, other groups in the parade shooting black powder rifle blanks (it’s Nevada) yet….. the drumline is the one who’s too loud?!?!?!?! LOL

This past week we went to a football game 3 hours away and we stopped at Buc-ee’s on the way there. They have these terminals where you can order food, so me and some friends start messing around with it and add everything to the order, comes out to around 60 meals and 200 something dollars. Every added topping and change request possible. My friend presses confirm order, and it prints a receipt. I lose it, I thought there was already a card in the machine and that’s why it printed, so I thought I just costed someone $240. Turns out you pay when you pick it up, so I had to go to the counter and explain what happened so they could cancel the order. The look on some of the employee’s faces. I will never recover

I was in band and in choir in middle school actually. There was one time at a band concert we were doing and one of our pieces that we had had a repeater at the end of the song so we had to play the ending measure twice which we did. However a sax player got so confused if we played the repeater or not so at the end of the song everything went quiet and everyone put their instruments in 2nd position. Then out of nowhere you hear this *BRRR* Out of nowhere and it made everyone, even the audience and my instructor laugh.

I was drum captain one year and for whatever reason an idea spread through the color guard that it was time for everyone to join Drumline. So we had 4 color guard members quit and join the Drumline. 3 of them were fine and made solid front ensemble additions, but one was just awful and wouldn’t practice. Halfway through band camp I essentially learned her entire glockenspiel part and had to teach it to her. The very beginning of the show started with an 8th note run at about 150BPM. She could do it at 60BPM. Everyone else had memorized the piece and she couldn’t play the first couple measures. But the biggest issue was that she wasn’t even trying and was creating unrelated and unneeded drama in the line. On this day of band camp, she got mad at me and said “you think I suck don’t you!?”. I stood there for a second or two and said “...ya... I do actually...” and then. Unloaded my frustrations on her. She never came back after that.

Awkward moment here...... In my adult life...well, I was 22. My husband and I had just bought a house so I finally splurged on my first drum kit. I had a little percussion experience but not on a kit.... I just liked to play along to my favorite music. I inky had it a couple of weeks when the German Band my husband p,Ayer in lost their drummer and suggested me... O...K.... I was good enough to keep the beat and fake it til I could make it.. I only had one rehearsal before my first gig. At the gig, can’t remember if it was the very first tune or a few into the set...and he called up a tune we had not rehearsed. The time sig was cut time, so when he counted off, I was off to the races...and then everyone abruptly stopped and said no, he counts the actual time we will play it in... we’ll that was awkward....but we all laughed and I shrugged it off and did just fine. I was in the band for 7 years until we disbanded, and a great time was had by all.

my most awkward moment in band was probably when i got my whole percussion yelled at because i got lost in the music (i was playing a snare drum while everyone else was on a pad) so basically i just got my section in trouble but not too badly and we did well on the concert the next day

Okay I'll try to make it quick. Long story short there was a funeral going by during band practice long line everybody had stopped playing everybody was being quiet most had their hats off as a show of respect. During the middle of the procession one of the bass drummers shows up a little late coming from a dentist appointment. He just walks up to the section leader and is like gee what happened somebody die? We all nearly lost it. Inappropriate yet hilarious one of the memories I still carry with me 20 years later.

One time in high school, we were in the stands playing pep band songs. I was using concert cymbals, since we lost the other two and it was the only one left. As we were playing, the cymbal straps snapped. It fell on the floor and it was pretty embarrassing... So yeah.

Probably the most awkward moment in band for me was when we were off to an indoor regional (either Hattiesburg or Bowling Green). I was with the cymbal captain (we are both girls) and we were grabbing one of her lowerclassmen before breakfast since the cymbals had to talk before we left. She was rooming with me and everyone knows BUDDY SYSTEM. When we knocked on the guy's door his roomie (a guy on bass with me) answered the door IN A TOWEL.

I auditioned for Battery in 2019 just after my school won SCPA Finals in A class but that's not the awkward part just wanted to flex, anyway it's the 2019 - 2020 Marching Band season and I had made it into Battery on tomline line and there's 3 of us tom people so they had us carry the actual snare drums instead of the tom drums and that's what we used for the season, gutted snare drums as toms for the tomline but the fist day of Band Camp, I was walking to the lot area in the grass and I walked out the doors from the band hallway and started walking down the ramp feeling really excited and great thinking to myself that " Oh my god, I'm in DrumLine now, new instrument! " and the drum fell off my harness, landed upside down and I was so shocked because it's my first day and I'm already dropping my drum! I saw my percussion teacher looking from where he was standing like " WTF just happened? " and I got down to the lot area and he said my name in a serious but laughing tone but thank the maker nothing badly damaged the snare drum, bot super awkward but I was embarrassed I dropped it and then I got the job of met person, then I dropped the speaker and the Dr. Beat a few times, sad.

My awkward band moment was when a band I used to play with did forget to sing us up to a national music and talent competition we used to do every year. We did remember it in time before the signing up time end. We did becouse of that have not a long time to practes. We hade only weeks to practes. We did not pas to the next region round. It was awkward becouse be did rush this.

I played 4th bass at Palm Springs High School in Palm Springs, California from '93 to '94. One day at rehearsal, with the whole band, I, what I thought was the right beats to play, weren't. The band director told everyone to stop playing. Then he looks directly at me and says "Pierson! What are you doing!?" And as soon after he said that, the entire band, including the rest of the drumline, stared right at me. The director then said "Its bum, bum, bum! NOT bum, bum, bum, bum!" Oh, how my world got so much smaller that moment. Lol!

My old roommate and I went to a Music City Drum Corps audition one year, and we rode separately for whatever reason. He was auditioning for quads. Not relevant but whatever. Well he flipped his car the morning of the audition, totaled it, and still showed up. Had bandages all over his body. His head had blood on it and was cut up all over his body. I remember before we went to sleep that night he downed like 3 or 4 ibuprofen He did not get a spot.

I ended up with a solo on vibraphone for a band concert and for whatever reason we had been given the music for that concert very late and ON TOP OF THAT I wasn’t even meant to have the solo but the person who was meant to be playing it got sick or something a day before the concert so I had to learn the solo in one practice then go preform it. The only problem was I wasn’t very good at keyboard at the time and it was like a 10 minute piece of music that i had to learn very quickly... So long story short it came time for my solo at the concert and I completely blanked and forgot it so I decided to resort to improv and made up the whole thing on the spot.💀 The band director wasn’t very happy with me but no one in the audience knew (the piece of music wasn’t very popular) and in my opinion my solo sounded better than the written one 😂😅. The conductor gave me a nasty stare for about 10 seconds after the solo which was awkward but the band and I all laughed about it after the concert.

I don’t know if this is considered “awkward” but my freshman year of highschool we had to parade around the school for the state game. Unfortunately the brass + drum line were walking really fast so we (the woodwinds) had to run to keep up. I imagine it looked crazy seeing 15 woodwinds sprint by 😭
