If you live in the city or go fox hunting on a regular basis, then Sartorial is fine and dandy. Whilst it’s also pretty good on your allotment and in the pub, there is simply no practical value in being stylish in the ‘real’ outdoors. Now I know that this is a ‘man about town’ kind of video, but we shouldn’t ridicule someone for wearing their serious weather gear in built-up areas if the chose to do so ? Quite a few of these accidental Anorak wearers will have experienced adventure far beyond that of any man in a pink tie driving to a country fair in his Land Rover Discovery 😀

I have a crombie overcoat which I wear with a very dark Fedora. I also often sport a Panama hat along with a seersucker jacket in the summer. For everyday hats, my go to are a navy Newsboy cap and a tweed flat cap. However, I also have a very nice, heavily padded Anorak which I wear for walks along the Southend seafront on a bitng cold day. My latest aquisition is a dark grey double breasted Trench coat that should match nicely with the aforementiond Fedora. Oh, and my cologne is Penhaligon`s Endymion.

Excellent list of most complimented items, Ash. I concur entirely with your observations about these items and the attention one receives when intentionally well-dressed. I never leave the house without a dress hat, a tie, quality leather shoes, and a wool or cashmere topcoat. -Good quality leather gloves and a colourful scarf complete the picture in the winter months. And I agree wholeheartedly that a navy blazer paired with a pair of grey flannel trousers is the male equivalent of the "little black dress" that women wear when they want to look effortlessly stylish.

“Shapeless abominations of nylon.” That’s a good way to describe it. I have a Brooks Brothers overcoat and it is fantastic and I look forward to cold days so I can wear it. At work, I dress up a bit (tie, cufflinks) which is more than 93% of the workforce dress. I get a lot more respect from folks than if I don’t.

In the late '70s early' 80s I worked in sales for an Opel dealer and through the trade I got to know the salesman at the Ferrari dealer in Manchester. One day I asked him how he could tell the serious customers from the time wasters. His answer was that you couldn't, but he could tell the ones who might have the money. Watch and shoes. If you could afford a Rolex or Patek Phillipe you would wear it all the time, at work or the golf club or going shopping. The same was true with shoes. Barker or Cheyney if going to the shops, the golf club or work, the tip or a business meeting.

Hi Ash As always really enjoy your videos and will join your Patreon group. In Tokyo we still go for “form” for business so everyone still wears suits and ties. In winter I wear an overcoat which goes past the knees and is black cashmere, with a suit and black Borsolino Fedora. Some foreigners here say I look like a Mafiosa or Inspector Gadget, but the vast number of people think I look very “stylish”. Being a wimpy Brisbane Boy I don’t like being cold so I find the Fedora really makes a difference in winter. For the sake of variety I ordered a Homburg from Locke & Co in London. Until I watched your videos I didn’t realise there was a strong secondary market for coats etc, so I will now check that out.

I am from the U.S. and love wearing my fedoras. They look great, they give me confidence and I often receive compliments on them. Necktie: Yes, and no: I refuse to wear one on formal events, rather an Ascot, because people bore me and I find this always gives an excuse to feel unwelcome. But in informal settings, the tie is the ultimate teaser, to again manipulate the host to silently show me the door. Thanks.

Correct on all points! I find good leather shoes much more comfortable than canvas shoes. They are lined with a fine soft leather. And kudos for eBay shopping. Done the same thing on a large number of items, including wool overcoats. I wonder if the younger men know how to mirror shine since military service has become very rare in the US. And whilst I don't go out looking for compliments, they are nice when they come. And if I am well dressed, I get taken much more seriously. Great video. Thank you, Ash!

I do believe that for winter outerwear and raingear, people's preferance is more about the illusion of functionality and comfort. Thing is, both rainjackets and functional winter coats were designed to be part of a system, which does indeed work better then classical garments (I would have been absolutely miserable in my trenchcoat or with my umbrella when I went on a multi-day hike in Dartmoor -the rain is just something else there, and I was thankful for the full coverage my army surplus goretex gave me). It is my observation, however, that most people will forgo wearing the appropriate trousers for the sake of fashion, often resoulting in them freezing their legs off or getting them drenched. One of my favorite part about my long coats is that I can sit down on cold or wet benches without a thought, and still look stylish. Anyway, thanks for the video, Ash!

My most complimented item is a long black shearling overcoat with a massive hoodie. It looks like a rapper's coat, and is certainly nothing "gentlemen-ly". I love wearing it in the cold, though. You can wear it with just a t-shirt underneath in 30f degree weather and feel no cold whatsoever.

I used to work in a high end watch shop and often had to 'compliment' guys on their Rolex because I knew they wanted it. That all telling cuff move lol. In two years I only genuinely complemented 3 or 4 guys (oh, and a lady) on their watches to the degree that the aforementioned guys clearly wanted. Talking about the item is so much better than a 'thats a nice (insert thing)'.

I agree with your opinions in the main. However, I have always preferred a double breasted overcoat. Of course it could be my more severe winters. The open coats require a scarf in inclement weather. As to hats I prefer a nice Kangol 504 winter flat cap, Panama, or fedora. Wool watch cap or balaclava in winter. And sometimes a heavy parka is just necessary. Question about your Bowler. One reason I have heard of hats going extinct is the lower roofs in cars. The more people in a car the less place to store a hat. I am curious how your Bowler fits your car life and when you dine out how awkward is the hat with no check room or hat stand?

There are two types of 'compliment monsters'. Pink ties are more 'monster compliments' IMO. What I mean by that is that the item simply looks different/ridiculous and people comment out of shock/think they should, or the person complimenting has no taste, so the compliment has no value anyway. The reason that I mention a pink tie is not because I dislike them, it's because you can wear the very nicest colour, absolutely stunning Hermes tie (blue or turquoise are my faves) and get zero comments, yet an even mediocre pink tie will get loads 🙄 Same for polo shirts....... but not cars hahahaha. Comments made for looking good and looking hipster are unfortunately difficult to differentiate these days. You of course are genuine, but looking for compliments is hipster desperation IMO. It's much better to know you look good and really not want people complimenting you.

Hi Ash, I hope you're keeping well. I went into town yesterday wearing a black 100% merino wool polo neck jumper, a purple 100% virgin wool overcoat, a midnight blue 100% merino wool scarf, black chinos, and dark brown calfskin Chelsea boots with broguing. As I have mentioned before, I am quite overweight, but I still thought I looked very smart. I was walking down the street and two teenagers, maybe about 14 or 15, walked past me. They decide to tell me that I look pregnant and then they start shouting preggers, preggers, preggers as they walk off. They found it hilarious, but I just wanted the ground to swallow me up. Sadly I am used to imbeciles making nasty comments in public about my weight, and it's not always children making them either. I know that the comments are likely to stop if I lose weight, but I think I'm about 22st, so I have a lot of weight to lose, and it is something I have really struggled with in the past. Anyway, I hope you don't mind me getting that off my chest. Kind regards Rob

I love your hat. Unfortunately it is so quintessential British that it would look somewhat out of place here in Germany. Another difference: you won't get compliments on your outfit here, outside a circle of very close friends or family. I got one (or was it mock?), while waiting for my tram wearing an ivory coloured suit and matching hat. A group of teenage boys went past shouting "great suit" from across the street. Felt weird, and I'm glad that people usually keep their mouth shut when they see me 🙄

Although, if you look at photographs from 1920ies or 1930ies you will see that the Bowler hat (but called a "Bibi" or a "Melone") were quite common in Germany too.
@PotsdamSeniorАй бұрын
@adrianwalker2833 That's true, but unlike the Fedora or Trilby (the typical "German" hat would be some sort of in-between I'd say), it fell completely out of the norm, together with the top hat. You are more likely to see a Homburg worn in the streets than a Melone.
