Did it? With a season of 20 legends of the game, only one of them will prevail and the other 19 will fail. Let alone the pregame that every All Stars season has. Also the oldschoolers are much bigger targets and flashier winners, since the new winners at the time had less time to become legendary, some not at all. This season always would've been a disaster, with or without production.

I think the worst part of Cook Islands is the super idol and the cast not knowing how to work around it. It was basically a guarantee that who ever found was making the finale because there was no reason for Yul to keep it a secret.

I know the Ulong decimation is iconic in that it has never been done before, but this was the season that most DESPERATELY needed a swap. I feel like some of the Koror underdogs like Coby, Gregg, and Jenn could have really shaken some shit up with a swap, but never really had the opportunity to.

I agree that Cook Islands is overrated, but the idea that this is a bad cast is absurd to me. Yes, it is a more introverted cast, between Yul, Becky, Sundra, and Penner, but that's a large part of the charm for me. I love the relationship dynamics of this cast, Penner and Yul have a fascinating story of friendship and trust as Yul seems genuinely baffled that the other players hold a grudge against Penner for the mutiny when he accepts the motivation behind it as a game choice. This is a cast where a lot of the best moments are just people having the kind of low-key conversations that are rare in Survivor, and I love that awkward introvert energy in a reality TV series that often goes in very different directions for entertainment.

44: top heavy cast, only the Tika 3, Danny and the Matt and Frannie showmance were memorable, really predictable and yet most people have it as one of the best new era seasons, I only have it above 41 Also it’s pretty ironic how the most strategy heavy season (Second Chance)was won by the most social player in a unanimous vote
@uglyaniimals

see i've heard this take a decent amount but i don't agree -- jamie was the closest thing we've had to an angelina 2.0, josh being the squidward to yam yam and carolyn's spongebob and patrick is a big part of why tika 2.0 is one of my favorite post swap tribes ever, matthew set a lot of shenanigans in motion and likely would have done even more had he not climbed that rock, claire had some great sassy confessionals and exploited the sit out rules in a memorable way, maddy was the rare alpha female and got the honor of the first premiere boot to get idoled out (by a single vote !) ,,,, ill concede that everyone else isn't particularly memorable but that's a good 2/3 of the cast that stick out to me, more then a lot of universally beloved seasons have yes i'll concede that it was pretty twist heavy and the editing was a lil wonky in parts but there are some fantastic characters on it and i like how much of the season subverts survivor cliches in who makes up the dominant alliance, who the challenge beasts are, who the showmance is between, etc

Extremely hot take here but Heroes vs Villains is overrated imo: -The main weakness is the EDIT: Lopsided in Russell's favor; making players like Danielle, Jerri, Colby, COURTNEY, even Sandra at times (the freaking winner of the season and the first two-time winner) invisible, along with taking away important storylines that would have made the season so much better (Colby/Jerri making up, more of Sandra's storyline of achieving her second win, Courtney's antics, etc.). -The post-merge is pretty much a pagonging of the Heroes; very predictable. -Some legends turn sour, making it a disappointment to experience (James, Rupert, Colby). It's a fantastic season, but it's not the greatest of all time. Cagayan, Micronesia and Pearl Islands are better imo.

The biggest problem with the twists in WAW is that they decided to introduce things like Fire Tokens in a season of ALL WINNERS The execution wasn’t ideal and it would have been better if it was introduced in a newbie season. A season of all winners was the worst time to introduce it
@scdwolfboy
@scdwolfboy 3 ай бұрын
I agree with this. You have someone like Sandra, who absolutely tanked her own game by giving away an idol that was expiring THAT ROUND, because she overvalued Fire Tokens, which were (unless I'm forgetting something) completely useless to people who were actually in the game, and not on the Edge. Just play the idol on yourself!
@aperson22222
@aperson22222 3 ай бұрын
I think the issue is that they conceived of the Edge and introduced _that_ in an all (well, mostly) newbie season to test it. The big takeaway of that test was that watching everyone sit around with nothing to do is boring (shocking I know) so they added fire tokens to give some structure to those segments. It may not have worked all that well, but the thought process is clear. And I really don’t see why this cast should have been so confused by them. It was a _very_ straightforward currency: Here’s a list of what’s available for purchase, here are the prices for each item. You’re telling me millionaires don’t understand simple cash transactions? And all-stars should have a better sense of what is and isn’t beneficial in that setting, not worse.

I'll give two answers 1. Borneo. Ignoring the cultural significance it has, it does not warrant being considered for best survivor season ever like it commonly is. While it is strategically effective, pagongings don't make for good television unless they happen from beneath (i.e. foa foa to galu). The pre-merge is also very underwhelming imo compared to other pre-merges. It's a very good, if not great season that warrants a ranking around the top 15, but those who hold it as peak survivor are being extremely biased towards its cultural impact. 2. Island of the Idols. It seems like nobody likes Island of the Idols, so it might be confusing saying it's overrated. In my opinion, the fact it isn't universally considered the worst season of survivor means it is being looked at too favorably. The Dan situation was handled awfully and grossly, even worse than other seasons with similar incidents like Thailand and All: Stars. While I don't think Nicaragua is anywhere close to good, calling it worse than Island of the Idols just for being extremely boring doesn't seem fair.

Australian Outback takes the cake for me. It was beyond overrated. It's one of those seasons in which people would start naming the cast as the reason why they think it's "really good" instead of legit reasons why it's better than actually great but underappreciated seasons like Marquesas, Panama, or even SoPa. The post-Jerri boot to the finale stretch of episodes were insufferably BORINGGGG. The Merge episode was probably the best episode, and it was comparably weaker to so many other seasons' high points. Even frickin Thailand had a better best episode of the season.

I’ll go up to bat for AO. The cast is the season, so that’s why it’s really good. For the first 10ish seasons, the strategy came second to the social experiment, and what is more experimental than dropping 16 strong personalities into one of the harshest locations out there? The whole season is edited like a summer blockbuster with heroes and villains amongst an epic backdrop. It’s one of those seasons where the whole package is greater than the sum of its parts.

I've got to go with HvV. Even if it actually were the best season of all time, its reputation is so high up in the stratosphere that it would be overrated. But consider: -The premerge drags on forever. -The postmerge is a pretty predictable steamroll after the JT boot. -The ascendancy of Russell and Parvati depends on a lot of greats playing like complete morons. -It should have been a celebration of the show's ten-year history, and was billed as such, but it didn't do much with that. It almost completely ignored storylines that stretched back to All Stars and earlier, most notably Jerri/Colby; it comes off as more of an unpleasant epilogue to Micronesia than anything; and players who'd made their bones as some of the greats of the first decade, like Tom and JT, find their legacies degraded. -There were some pretty dubious casting picks. Candace and Sugar weren't anybody's heroes, James was a mean-spirited bully, and the most villainous thing Danielle ever did was speak with an annoying accent. Parvati was right to question why she'd been consigned to the Villains tribe when the Heroes included not one but two players _who'd done the exact same things she had._ -They also snubbed a couple of the one-time players that fans have been clamoring to see again for ages. Shane was cut at the last minute in favor of Russell. Now yes, they'd struck gold with Russell, so a last-minute switch to make room for him was justified; but why not give him Randy's spot instead? Randy was the only Villain who brought nothing to the table, you're telling me Shane would have been less entertaining than that? And Natalie Bolton put her life on hold and flew all the way out there just so she could hang around waiting for an opening that never came! I hope she at least got a nice vacation out of it. -Courtney only got four confessionals! -There were certainly some very innovative strategies by the standards of the time on display, but those have for the most part been copied so many times for so long that you get the Casablanca Effect: Watch it today and it's really not that impressive, because you've seen it all before. True, everywhere else you've seen it has been building on the foundation it laid, but knowing that intellectually doesn't do much to increase the entertainment value. I'm not saying it's not a great season, but it's not perfect, and nothing short of perfection could possibly justify its reputation. Also, Gabon. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. I can't think of a single element I enjoyed. It has nothing redeeming about it, nothing at all. Of all the seasons I've binge watched, which is nearly all of them, it was the only one that I truly found to be a slog.

I agree with a lot of these. Winners at War could've been great, but they didn't trust the cast and marred it with so many twists and zoomed the confessional cam in too much. Blood vs Water 1 is fine, but San Juan Del Sur is the superior BvW season, and Second Chances was missing a lot of the fun it should've had. Plus, the audience voting was really "the illusion of choice" since it was only 32 options (really 31) for 20 slots, with a bunch having 0 chance.

I've always thought Micronesia was overrated. I've seen some recent pushback to its greatness, but it's still constantly ranked in the Top 5 seasons. The premerge is long and has 3 quits and a medevac. Penner is taken too soon, Yau-man didn't do anything, Fairplay quits, Kathy quits, and Chet ruins a fabulous Ozzy blindside by quitting. The postmerge is great, but the twist to switch to a final two because of the quits and medevacs really screws over Cirie. I have it ranked in the 15-19 range. 5 great episodes doesn't make up for the frustration of the rest of the season.

I would argue that Palau holds up surprisingly well on a re-watch (I personally have it in my top 5). Stephenie is still amazing, but I think what makes the season work is how intense the ending gets. You can see how the time Koror has together makes the vote offs all the more intense. Ian's arc specifically gets so dramatic at the end, that really turns into one of the more epic seasons the show has produced. My hotter take in all honesty is Micronesia. There are some undeniably fun moments, but something about one tribe being pure cannon fodder, the beginning of "LOLZ blindsides are hilarious vs. tragic" era and the way Cirie went out just never sat well with me.

I agree with most of the points but I VEHEMENTLY disagree with your Cambodia assessment. The Terry thing was tough but the whole idea of the season is if players were going to squander their second chance or not. Woo STILL just trusted a bigger leader. Savage was his new Tony. Vytas over played his personality. Abi and Keith’s personalities were in full force with quotes like “at least you made the merge” and “Totos” and “good with balls”. Keith especially was a wrench in the main character Jeremy and Kelly’s plans in the end when he worked with them! Kimmi understanding her low place and trying to make a move that backfired! Stephen being too focused on redeeming his previous season. PLUS insane strategic moves!

My top 5: - Koah Rhong: People who claim this is an underrated peak season I can’t take seriously, it’s just a slightly above average season to me not much more than that - 44/46: I think people dreadfully overhype these seasons (46’s second half because nobody likes the first half) 44 is just by the books/ a lamer version of Tocantins and the characters to don’t captivate me as they could in this and 46, I also think 46 is way too extra for it’s own good unlike other seasons where 90 minutes is a benefit this one screamed padding runtime - (Still love this season for the record) Micronesia: One of the best post merges ever don’t get me wrong but the first half drags here and there for me and Parv does not get enough screen time despite being the winner - Palau: this season is so painfully overrated I don’t like seasons where it’s one tribe dominating another and a clear cut winner - (Good but not great) Australian Outback: decent season but people oversell how it’s quicker paced the back half is particularly boring and the first half isn’t as good as people make it imo. The chicken fight and Tina flipping the vote last minute are still peak tho

Genuinely surprised the San Juan Del Sur wasn’t mentioned. I don’t understand the love for that season. It has a couple of good rounds gameplay wise but it’s cast as a whole is probably one of the most unlikable & nobody really left me rooting for them the entire season. Also I find China overrated, the location was cool at first but it just seemed so dark & wet & muddy that I got over it pretty fast & it left a lot to desire in terms of visually stimulating. The set pieces & challenges & rewards were cool it was just all the back at camp stuff

For me, it’s Pearl Islands. I think before watching it, I had a picture painted of this Survivor Magnum Opus, but I struggled to really connect with the cast aside from Sandra. I’m also not a Rupert fan, so that could potentially be a reason why it didn’t work for me, because he was all over it for the first half of the season.

Here’s my top 5 overrated (strap in): 1. Micronesia (S16) - I’m sorry but I think this season is mostly boring until the jury phase. Even then - the Black Widows alliance run circles around some of the most collectively dumbest players to ever play, and while that is entertaining at times - eh? The random final 2 twist to snub Cirie sucks too. 2. Millenials Vs. Gen X (S33) - I never have cared for this cast, whatsoever. The twist is fine, the gameplay is fine. It’s just… overall fine. 3. Koah Rong (S32) - Dubbing this the “deadliest season ever” next to Guatemala, fair. But like Guatemala, it’s a sum of small parts season, like Guatemala. This is more entertaining than Guatemala as well, but I just consider it that season 2.0. 4. Palau (S10) - this is the Big Brother 16 of Survivor. It’s fantastic on the first watch, but every other time it’s a slog to get through or you notice more things not to like about it. 5. Marquesas (S4) - I’m ashamed because I really love the narrative of the season, but man this season can be meddling at times. It has fantastic episodes but mostly forgettable cast, minus Kathy/ Vecepia/Boston Rob. It’s like a lesser Vanuatu or San Juan Del Sur for me, but those two seasons don’t get as much praise as this one. I get it though - this season changed the game. Now my top 5 underrated seasons: 1. San Juan Del Sur (S29) - baller season from start to finish. Natalie has one of the greatest winner arch’s, memorable side characters/players, feuds etc., messy gameplay, perfect execution of gameplay. It’s well rounded. 2. Vanuatu (S9) - now I get the first 3-4 episodes are as basic of survivor as you get. But once it clicks on, dang is it entertaining. Chris’ winning game is absolutely legendary, and seeing icons like Amy and Eliza getting swindled by the con artist is just fantastic. How the story plays out is the most fascinating in Survivor history. 3. Survivor 43 (S43) - I’m gonna say it - my favorite cast of the new era. The pre jury and post jury is a rollercoaster. Jesse has to be one of my favorite players of all time, and the fact he goes down swinging puts him up there with Cesternino/Cirie for robbed clear winners in Survivor history. Idc that all three goats made it to the end, Gabler was still fun and helped make that pre jury and merge absolutely fun. 4. Samoa (S19) - I get it, it’s the Russell Hantz show. Side characters are underedited, there’s not that many memorable characters other than the ones who stood in the highest opposition. However, it’s a season that leaves me dumbfounded on the story. A guy finds idols with no clues, a tribe of 4 pagong’s an entire tribe with the numerical advantage at the merge, great idol plays and competitions, and a funny end that’s ironic/humorous/anger inducing all at the same time. 5. Redemption Island (S22) - I legitimately think this is a so bad it’s good season. I get it - Boston Rob dominates the season, Russell’s tribe of newbies suck, etc. But legit - Phillip and Boston Rob carry this season on their backs and it’s interesting to see essentially the “lock down” strategy utilized to the perfect extent it’s ever been used. You can’t help but root for Rob - just like his recent DONDI appearance.

My greatest (impossible) wish is that we could redo Winners at War, with extra long episodes, and ZERO twists, idols, advantages, anything. I would give anything to see all the dynamics and gameplay WITHOUT all the extra junk. I get that Edge was there basically because a bunch of them wouldn't have come back otherwise. Also, my own personal bias of course, but my ultimate favs in WoW were pretty much all old school people who pretty much all got instantly steamrolled 😅, so ya know it was also kinda really depressing to watch. 😅

I think a cool video idea would be survivor players who were “dead in the water”. Basically just survivor players who made such a crappy move, no one would work with them and their game was tanked. Example would be Mike from season 30 after the letter from home fiasco. I know he won anyway but everyone left in the game pretty much hated him after that.

Hard agree on Palau and Blood Vs Water especially because both of those seasons are revered so much and I just…don’t understand why lmao. They’re good! But they aren’t the world beaters people treat them like they are. Cook Islands I also hard agree with but it’s also now to the point where so many people are vocal anti-CI that I wonder if it doesn’t count as overrated. Second Chance is a fair pick despite my personal opinion on it. Winners at War doesn’t necessarily feel overrated to me because the prevailing (at least Superfan) opinion is pretty similar to yours? But idk. Give me Guatemala and Borneo on there. Maybe scalding hot takes especially with Borneo but there’s just too much reverence confusing something being iconic with being good survivor. Especially Borneo. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t call Borneo bad, but it’s not as good as people think it is with nostalgia glasses. Guatemala is just a wet fart of a season that people prop up because it’s old school and the season summary is funny

My top 5 most overrated seasons: (In no specific order) 1. Heroes vs Villains The cast is good, but the late merge is annoying, most of the challenges are either boring or overly violent, and there are good moves, but other than that, the season is mid. 2. Palau Everything Idoled out said. 3. Australia I find it boring tbh, it’s been a while since I’ve seen, but it helped set up the image in my head about how boring old seasons can be. 4. 45 This season is just not good, the cast was ok, I really only liked Julie, Kellie, Emily, and Kaleb, and everyone lost their vote to the point where everything was made for a Reba steamroll, which ended up happening. Katurah was annoying, and so was Jake, but atleast he’s somewhat relatable, and the showmance was so boring. 5. Cagayan Just kidding lol, I only have 4 overrated seasons.

45 was great. Even with the lost votes, Belo could've gained the numbers to get Reba out, at one point they were the majority. They didn't do that because they were a mess, not because of the votes. I have been a survivor fan since I was a teen and have watched every season multiple times (EXCEPT for the season that Colton was first introduced - (one time was enough I consider that the worst season ever) I also preferred when Survivor went to different locations but understand its cheaper and easier to film in one location so... I guess that's basically a thing of the past. One thing about Survivor (along with other reality shows) I am seriously beginning to wonder if part of the show is scripted (binge watching during Cov. lock down is when I first started noticing things I had missed. The big thing that has gotten me to wonder this is hearing contestants use similar phrasing across different reality shows. I know law enforcement and archaeologists can use "phrasing" to know that a person was responsible for writing different letters or historical documents and the same would seem to fall true for scripts. I have notice basically the same phrase used on the following reality shows - Survivor, The Amazing Race, Hell's Kitchen, Top Chef, Big Brother and a few others with only a couple words changed. That phrase is -- "I hope the (fill in the shows name or whatever the goal is here) gods are with us/me - example. "I hope the Survivor god's are with me on this" , "This will work if the Race gods are with us/me", "I sure hope the Brisket god's are with me while I cook this over night for the challenge" etc... That is not a phrasing I have ever heard on anything but reality tv and seems to me to indicate a writer that likes that phrase working on multiple reality shows. Maybe I am wrong but has anyone else noticed this? I can honestly say I have heard some form of this phrase used on EVERY reality show at least once that I have ever watched and that just makes me wonder and seems to indicate a writer writing something to be said.

I will always say it's Cagayan. A couple of reasons: - Tony eats up way too much screentime. - The entire beauty tribe is underedited. - A third of the cast come back to play again, and half of them don't deserve it. - The super idol comes back.

The “Winners at War” take is fair, honestly, as I JUST rewatched it. For one, there’s WAY too much emphasis on Edge of Extinction. We spend so much time there each episode just to watch Rob, Natalie, Parv, and Tyson… cart logs? Cart coconuts? Take Tony’s vote? (Okay, that one was entertaining as a result) If you were watching as a casual fan, there’s so much you need to know - previous seasons, perceptions of the winners, legacies - that if you hadn’t seen the seasons the winners had been on, you’d be lost as hell. I also know that people are not happy about the boot order, but in my opinion, that comes down to a lot of the older players not understanding how to react and move with more fluid alliance structures. Rob plays loyalty gang, but Jeremy, Sarah, and Tony aren’t that style. They got super far as a result, carrying other also-rans like Nick and Ben with them. Lastly, there’s so many gimmies this season, and I understand that this was a “celebration” of Survivor, but just giving everyone their loved ones was like, ridiculous. Did the season have the best cast in Survivor history? Totally. Did it have a deserving, satisfying winner? Without question. Was it a great season? Maybe not.

I find myself agreeing with everything on this list. Especially Winners At War and Cook Islands. The theme of WAW was like handing the season on a silver platter to both production and the viewers. All-time great players battling it out to see which winner comes out on top and wins again. How could we not love the idea of it? It's really too bad that production had to be so heavy-handed with the Edge twist and fire tokens. It made the season feel so bloated with all these characters every episode and having so much time dedicated to discussing the twists no less. I wish they just gave it the HvV treatment on having no huge lingering twists, just idols at most, and let all the winners battle it out without interference. Cook Islands has many legends in the making like Yul, Parvati, Penner and Ozzy. The problem is that for many of these soon-to-be returnees, this isn't the best iteration of their Survivor story. And mix them with a bunch of players we end up not caring about because the editing is so lopsided, and what we get is an honestly very dull season with some very heavy twists. Your enjoyment for the season heavily banks on how much you love the Aitu 4 story. Which is very hard to not root for of course, but it really doesn't carry the entire season when even two of the four Aitu tribe (Sundra and Becky) hardly get any time shown as Yul and Ozzy are heavily favored instead.
