Thank you! ❤️ Of course, we watched all of his videos! 😃 We love how Dro showed that fennecs don't belong in a cage and gave cute little Scout his own room with puzzles and a sandbox 🥰 We've learned a lot about the insects and meat he fed Scout. We've also talked with people from Arabic countries, who have seen fennecs in the Sahara desert and told us about their natural diet. Our vet had also seen many fennecs die of liver failure because they were given dog kibble and not enough taurine. So, luckily, we've had many great sources to learn from! 👍🏻

I was told by a zoo vet to feed foxes as close to their diet in the wild..I never fed dog or cat food..they do need taurine in their diet to.keep from developing juvenile cataracts...heart problems and assorted other maladies..also breeding.problems...

I think any combination could work, really. I also think you could use his paw print on key chains or something small like earrings. lol. I've got ideas! @@nalasimba He smells sweet alcoholic drinks from miles away! The first time he nose dived into beer was in a restaurant when he was half a year old. The waitress was holding a beer, but then saw Djinn and couldn't keep her enthusiasm to herself (we don't blame her of course). She spilled the beer all over the table, hahahaha! Djinn was asleep on my lap, but woke up and was on the table in a split second, quickly drinking as much beer as possible before we could grab him again. After that moment... Djinn no longer wanted water.... Hehe 😅

How did the corona related lockdowns affect your ability to get proper food for Djinn? Also how many days worth of food do you normally store?

We always buy lots of chicken hearts, breast, rabbit meat etc at once and make freezer bags. The insects (if well taken care of) stay perfectly fine for 2 months or longer. So, we try to keep a 1 to 2 months supply of meat and insects. We like to prepare lots of his food at once, since it's such a time consuming job 😅 Fruit and vegetables are mostly fresh, because Djinn can eat some of ours. Luckily, we never had a lockdown in which we couldn't visit the supermarket or order food online anymore!

I don't give my dog kibble, I give her Fresh Pet. It's much healthier then store bought kibble, It may be harder to find depending on what stores carry it because it needs to be refrigerated. It's so worth it though. I'd also like to try Nom Nom now or Framer's dog.

Oh yes, poor availability of fresh food is often the case. It's the same with rabbit meat or insects for fennec foxes. We made sure we could buy the proper food before getting our fox. Awesome to read you feed your dog fresh!! 👍🏻

Lol! I just tried to imagine a Fennec hunting porc and beef... No chance! Caveman has more chances to eat a Mammut than a Fennec porc or beef. BTW, if he prefers his meat grilled, he's not from the first generation caught in the desert, isn't he? I mean it sounds as if he was alread born in captivity, quite 2nd or 3rd generation in domestication, right?

There is a channel call professor fennec. He has a fennec fox called Cody that passed away from liver failure at 10. Maybe it has to do with a fatty diet. Cody is a little chubby.

We've seen it often. When fennecs around 9 or 10 years old need to see a vet and get diagnosed with liver disease, it's probably because of years and years of (for fennecs) unhealthy food. What we find difficult is that our fennec likes the fatty foods too, and it's hard to say "no" to such an adorable face. So, we can understand chubby Cody. Rest in peace ❤️

Hi! Thank you for your question! Unfortunately, cat food (just like dog food) contains too much fat for a fennec fox. On the long term this will result in liver failure because of the built-up of Vitamin A (retinol). So, I would not recommend feeding (wet) cat food. After I've done lots of research, I believe that all cat and dog food is not healthy for a fennec. That's why we feed Djinn a more natural diet of low-fat (raw) chicken, rabbit, duck, turkey or fish, insects and vegetables/fruit.

Great to see you've found this video and interesting question! As stated in the video, cat food contains too much vitamin A (retinol). The brand doesn't matter, because it would never be something a desert animal can eat in the Sahara desert. We recommend to stay close to the natural diet and add taurine as a supplement if necessary. A fennec needs around 100mg taurine per day and the amount of taurine in daily cat food would still too little. Remember, fennec foxes are basically wild animals, meaning that they get sick from dog and cat food. I'm curious too now. Do you know the age of the Fennec?

How did you get your fox? I would love to get one/adopt. I live in FL and its pretty much hot/humid here all year. Ive seen these at the zoo's here so im guessing they are ok with the weather here lol Can u recommend anyone here/near me that I can adopt/even foster one? TY

The latest info I've got is that you'll need a permit to own a fox in Florida. Then you'll need to find a reliable breeder, who's fair to the foxes and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, I don't know any breeders there... Or you can wait until September/October and adopt a fennec that needs to be rehomed. Lots of people get a baby fennec, but when they are around 6 months old they can get very aggressive. People then get rid of them again (make sure you look into USDA licenses for that). A rehomed fennec might need a little more time to readjust to the new house and people. Good luck!
