Love your videos about organisation! I used to have exactly the same notebook system as you - small black ones for the neverending to-do lists, and a diary for all the appointments and dates. I've been growing ever more disorganised recently and getting nothing done, but this video made me get back to my trusted notebook system. You're a lifesaver!

You look glowing in this video Jean! And HOW have I not heard of Trello before?! Thanks for such great tips! x

I love Trello for production pipelines! I also use Asana which is similar and has a calendar view which I use to create content plans and social media schedules. But nothing beats handwriting a to-do list! I've adopted the bullet journal style for my daily lists, which I find pretty easy to follow. Great video Jen!

The continuous to do list sounds like a great, easy, not too demanding idea and I'll definitely try! Actually, I might start now, you got me pumped!

Another app I love is called Notion - you can use it on your phone and mac and it is such a wonderful lifesaver. It's free and just keeps everything wonderful and safe. I use it religiously in my current MA course, especually for making class notes.

I've had this adorable little A6 floral notebook and I had no idea what to use it for. It's been sitting in my drawer for four years!! (no joke) because I was just such a damn perfectionist about it and thought oh it's so small, I have to use it well, I have to fill it with something amazing, it has to be perfect... that was such a freaking mistake, haha! Finally one day I started using it as a "continuous to do list" just like you mentioned, and it's not perfect at all, it gets messy, my handwriting is crooked etc. etc. but I couldn't be happier about it!! :)

That sounds exactly like me aha - it's a constant struggle but I've realised it actually feels so much better when my notebooks are full of notes. You can always get more blank ones :D. Glad you're making the most of yours :).

I love your organization videos! I admire you so much for being able t balance being a PhD student, working, KZbin, and having social life, I hope I can achieve that someday! I have a random University question that is unrelated: when you were taking your lower division classes when you were first starting university did you find your classes boring? As you got closer to graduation were the classes more interesting/attuned to your interests? That's what I'm hoping happens to me anyway, haha.

I will say I wouldn't idealise working almost full time and doing a part time PhD. I have very little free time and I would far prefer to have funding as it is really difficult. It is, however, an option when there is very little funding out there so you can definitely make it work :). I didn't find my first-year classes boring at all. I had never studied Ancient History or Archaeology before, simply watched a tonne of documentaries and read some books so I found my classes fascinating plus there was always more to read. The classes did get more attuned to my interests when I could pick in final years but my interests had only just become more specific. They were much broader in first year so I appreciated broader classes and they helped me narrow down what I was actually interested in, which definitely changed. Never rule anything out until you've given it a chance. What you want to specialise in in first year may very well not be what you want to specialise in when it comes time to write your dissertation - it wasn't for me.

A nice video! Two list apps that I use for organizing my life are WorkFlowy for just general-purpose lists (highly recommended) and Asana for project management lists. For budgeting, I'm giving an app called Personal Capital a go but am not sure whether I'll be using it extensively or not.

For budgeting I use an app called Wally. It's easy to use and it helps you budget how much you are allowed to spend each day. You can even set a target of how much you want to save for the month beforehand, and it will budget accordingly.

Yeah I just prefer flicking through notes than scrolling through them, and I'm more likely to check my notebooks diaries etc, than filter through notes that may or may not be there on my phone :).

Well I knew I was going to love this from the thumbnail. My to do list is A4 and just for work. Hmmmm. I do the carry over thing too though. I love keeping my notebooks neat, which I need to let go of.

The neat thing is a perpetual battle with me aha - although I find the continuous to do list always looks quite neat because I write it in all caps and it's just a case of crossing through which is nice. University notes... not so much.

I am similar to you - I generally prefer paper and pen, except for financial tracking. You certainly think twice about spending when you can clearly see what you have spent before in that category. I've not spent much on books so far this year - I'm going to have to sort that out pretty soon!

Ooh I like the look of that. I'm always taking pictures of things to remember to come back to, writing random things in notes so I don't forget when I only have my phone on me and I'd like to leave myself voice memos so it's so cool that it combines all things rather than having them spread across your device.

You're so good at these (in general you're perfect at everything, but I'm really in love with this stationary videos). can I request a video update on your PhD program? how's the work load? have you been published yet?
@JeansThoughts
@JeansThoughts 7 жыл бұрын
Aha thanks, it's easy to have everything together in a video but don't underestimate how stressed and messy other aspects of my life/work/studying are ;). I did write an article for the dangerous women's project last year, you can read it here: dangerouswomenproject.org/2016/09/15/philomela-procne/ but I'm nowhere near publishing anything else. I have 11,000 words of my thesis which may not end up in the final thing for all I know and it's going to be 100,000+. I still have 3.5 years left to finish it :). I also haven't had a lot of time for writing non-thesis research articles working four days a week, which is frustrating but hopefully something I'll be able to overcome in time. I definitely have some potential articles I'd like to write and will hopefully give a conference paper this year that will turn into one.

'Tool' I understand. But what is this word 'Organisational' you use? :) The closest I get is a group of 3" x 5" index cards I hold together with a clip and keep in my back pocket. I always carry a pen as well.

The British spelling of organizational...? An adjective: en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/organizational (It's impossible to tell when people are joking in comments aha.) I do love index cards, I used them a lot for exam revision in university.
