You can put a plant or two of water lettuce in a bowl with some garden soil at the bottom and sit it inside under an LED light for the winter months; same with water hyacinth, and some other tropical water plants.

A great video I really enjoyed it you have a new subscriber. I am original from Nottingham England but I emigrated to Newfoundland Canada in 1990 - 2018 I decided to keep koi in my garden pond like I did in the UK but here the winter is brutal like -20 is very common so we have our own chalenges. Plus we can’t purchase equipment so I have to make everything ie filters etc. Cheers Mate.

Thank you! Yeah, I can imagine the harsh Canadian winters are tough when it comes to ponds! Very cool country though, I’ll hopefully go one day.. I actually had some family emigrate there too!

You can get water hyacint in the EU mainly a lot of the old royal gardens have that somewhere, if they know you they will give a piece

Is there a video for how to make the bog filter ? I’ve got a 40 gallon rubber stock tank pond and it’s overrun with algae. I have snails and shrimp so I can’t dose it with chemicals; however, prior to adding them I tried it and it didn’t work. I have two sponge filters in there and tons of plants. The algae ate all my water lettuce and hornwort, also taking over my hyacinths and lily 😩

Hi there, this is the video that shows the build of the bog filter on this pond : kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5atnZuJrbmCm6Msi=Pc3G0HiBne3E0Izn However, I dont think this is the best bog filter I have ever built as it does not include a cleanout. Although that may be ok if you’re not planning on adding fish as shrimp and snails probs won’t be producing much waste. Bear in mind though that adding a bog filter may not get rid of your algae, sometimes a pond just needs time to mature. I find it takes around 2/3 years for a pond to properly mature and that’s when hopefully you will have less algae issues. Obviously plants can make a big difference in the meantime. Hope that helps!

Typha eats organic matter litterally. The downside is that it might end up taking over the pond. Planting helophytes in gravel is a nice idea. Regards

I also use water lettuce in my pond , but remove it before winter, bleach dip ,rinse and grow it on in one of my aquariums then toss it back in the pond when it gets warm again .

Hey question for ya.. what temp does the water in your aquarium read in the winter? I might consider trying to save some water lettuces vs always having to re-buy them

Great tips dude although with turtles like we have they would eat all of these ha ha ha….. we are actually going to be letting the algae grow on the sides to use it as a denitrifier…. we will however be growing plants near our indoor pond so that we can use the water to water them with water cress may be one of them because it is incredibly healthy …. But we are going to be doing tomatoes sprouts and all kinds of other things too but far out of reach of our turtles🐢🐢🌱🌱😀😀👍👍

@@GingerFishyOfficial thanks dude we did a two-part series on the filter we build it in the first video and hook it up in the second video so far it’s been working out pretty well it’s only been hooked up for a couple weeks we do our videos quite a bit in advance…. but so far she’s been working pretty good for how cheap we built it for….. we are going to continue to add to this room and just keep adding micro green sprouts and all kinds of other foods so that we can grow them all winter long

Thoughts on using a uv filter in addition to plants? Thanks!
@GingerFishyOfficial Жыл бұрын
From what I’ve heard uv only helps with green water, not blanket weed or string algae. And I’ve never really had an issue with green water so long as the filtration is good! 😊👍

Hi mate, sorry to hear your struggling on the algae front.. Are you in the UK? I just ask as I’ve recently started using a couple of products to help with algae and they’re working really well.. im just not too sure if they are available outside the UK.

I dropped my hardy water lillies into our pond but the leaves and flowers are about 6" or less from breaching the water surface, will they be ok? I dropped them in about 2 days ago.
@GingerFishyOfficial Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they should be fine, the leaves will soon reach the surface! 🌱😊
@EyezLikaFox̌ Жыл бұрын
@Ginger Fishy i hope so.. just worried because the leaves got pretty beat-up during shipping and I'm sure they're dealing with some transfer shock. Dropping almost $300 between the 6 lillies, shipping and potting supplies is kinda scary so im hoping they will be ok 😊
@GingerFishyOfficial Жыл бұрын
@@EyezLikaFox̌ yeah, even if all the leaves do end up breaking off, new ones should soon grow. If any of them do get to the point that all the leaves break off though, what I would probably do then is lift it up a bit higher, that should help it get going, then you can move it back down again. I’m sure they’ll be fine though, lillies are pretty tough! 😄💪

Hi do I plant hornwort just in gravel
@GingerFishyOfficial Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris! Hornwort actually grows best when floated, you can literally just throw it in and it will sort itself out. It grows best this way because when floating it can access co2 from the air and will also receive more light. It can sometimes look a bit messy though when just thrown in and left to float, so some people do indeed plant it in gravel. And it will still do ok, it won’t ever grow proper roots though, and may rot out and float off eventually. So up to you really, you can plant it in gravel (and I have done plenty of times) but would probs prefer to be just floated. Hope that helps! 😊👍
