I recently purchased the newest model of Marshall dsl5 and it’s fantastic. No pedals needed and perfect volume for a house. Sounds great loud and quiet. I don’t understand when people say it sounds boxy; it’s the best small amp I’ve ever heard. No pedals needed!

My favourite practice amp I have owned is the Orange Crush 12.. it has one channel and a separate gain and overdrive, when blended creates interesting tonal variety and it has a analogue signal, whilst being solid state. I have owned low wattage valve amps and didn't really get on with them as well as I did with the Orange 12. Really great review btw👏 👍

Believe it or not, I've actually been playing chronically on my ID Core V3 10, and I like it super crunch tone, with my Fenders. It is less forgiving than my other amps, but I really do like it. Also, the Katana mini is also awesome. I've broke in the speaker and now sounds nice and gritty. I set the delay on max with time on zero to get a reverb fx. The Blackstar speakers are breaking in too! Blackstar should thank you because if it weren't for your review, I would never have bothered with the amp. But I liked that you shredded in it in all its settings and it gave me an idea of how it might sound for me. I saw a review of the ID Core V3 10 and the poofy haired British guy played some boring chords and strums that to me, didn't really highlight the amp (to my liking, at least) in a way that I wanted to buy it.

100-percent agree with Micro Cube recommendation, a slight caveat to the "no amp" recommendation, it's fine for learning scales, even songs etc., but if you are a new-ish player and haven't learned good muting technique with mid to high gain, primarily practicing with no amp and then plugging in to an amp and playing with gain could be problematic. If you are an experienced player and/or started out with an amp then yes, a great solution to playing almost anywhere (except the toilet) and not annoying family and neighbors.

Hi Elmo! Some time ago I asked you what you`re thinking about Supro Amps. Now I know the answer: I purchaded the Supro 10, used I (doub tit) for 300. I got a real strong 5 Watt amplifier.It has everything you need, 2 tone control, a Master volume , a volume, spring reverb, Power, Standby 2 Effects, Drive and Boost. You can put these effcts by a extern pedal. This Supro Amp is worth evey cent you pay for.

Turning the guitar volume down after playing dry… I am still smiling.. 😂 Love your vids, bro. I decided for the Marshall DSL 1 HR over the Harley Benton… I am restarting after some time without guitars and it just had to be tube this time… But you cannot go wrong with the cube… It sounds marvelous. On a very low budget I would look for a used Fender Mustang V1 or V2. Handsome gear with a good tone.

Great content, as always. I am looking at modeling amps that have either 8” or 12” speakers. I play soft fingerstyle blues and some nice, mostly clean chord progressions. I play exclusively to low, bedroom-level decibels. I know that when you crank amps up, even a little, the larger speaker has a fuller, richer tone. But at the levels I play, just around speaking level or slightly higher, will I get a fuller tone from the 12” speaker or will playing at such low volumes negate any of the benefits of the larger speaker?

Roland Micro Cube blows everything else away. I started playing again at 60 with more money than sense and talent. Bought a Micro Cube early on and liked it but wanted something better for my office use (where low volume is critical). I tried almost everything up to Princeton reverb (with pedals of course) and Marshall DSL5. The latest effort was Marshall DSL1 (the DSL 5 with greenback is now in my home studio and absolutely love it). The DSL1 was a horrible ice pick! Reboxed it to return and to fill the void, dug out the old Roland MC. OMG! that little thing was put away while I ran through all that money. Hi. Very interesting video thanks. Here's my subjective view. Probably should've been titled something like "Top 5 practice amps which can sound similar to my beloved Marshall 1987x". Personally if I had to choose a Marshall practice amp my preference would be a JCM 800 or 2000 sound, let's say the JCM 800 SC20H and pair it with a 12" speaker cab. Or a 2525C Jubilee. Or an older TSL. All with master volume for adjusting from practice to gig levels and gain as desired. Guitar is an instrument that can play any musical style and every manufacturer has a fantastic amp or number of amps capable of being great for practice. You might be desiring different sounds and feelings too eg: Vox, Orange, Mesa, Fender, Engl, Laney, Hiwatt, etc - all non Marshall right? Elmo it appears gravitates to a 1987x amp boosted with an overdrive - great sound which many love, but not for everyone - if I played that style I would use Mesa or Orange or Engl as my opinion. No amp? Why not play an acoustic with super light strings? Elmo makes everything sound great! Regards.

What did you upgrade your HB15 speaker to, and was it worth it?
@MrPolevaulter3 жыл бұрын
I didn't. I sold the amp to my luthier friend. He put in a Celestion of some kind, but I forget which one it was. It does sound a bit better, but I'd have to A/B them, and know how much the whole thing cost to even guess if it was worth it. I think he thinks it was.

Ciao Elmo! What’s about the use of an active load box+cab simulator (as TeoNotes Torpedo captor x or captor + cab m)? In case someone has already big Marshall’s at home... 😎...but then of course you need external speakers (or “hifi stereo system” speakers)...🤔

Elmo I had a Roland Cube 60 in the first Cube series with the 20 and 40 and that 60 sucked on the metal and the rectifier setting have you ever played one I could not stand playing mine anymore so I sold it and got me a Peavey vypyr 30 watt original and the metal and the rectifier was so good on it I bought it many years ago when it came out brand new but the funny thing is now I have a katana artist made by Roland boss and the metalcore effect on it is great it sounds nothing like Roland Cube 60 did in fact the new boss effects today are a whole lot better than they were many years ago and many years ago amps that were digitally processed like the Line 6 spider one really sucked see I like the guitar recordings professional guitar players and I want that tone On My Guitar amp by the way the Peavey vypyr x-series really sucks it is too harsh I could not stand it any longer so I sold mine and got a katana artist the only bad thing about the katana artist is I have to download the patches like effects or whatever and save it to the katana and metalcore is the best metal distortion I have heard that sounds awesome and punchy and you can put your amps setting on clean Oar acoustic which I like even better and once you save it you don't have to get it again it's in your amp for good the katana artist is great because the boss effects are good now if it was just the amp itself the metal which is the brown sound is not that good compare to the metalcore effect sound but Brown is okay the one that I like the least is the lead setting I have no use for that when I have the brown setting

Hey Elmo are you saying all those expensive attenuators and powersoaks are unnecessary with a simple volume pot?
@humann0x3 жыл бұрын
Yes, when you don't want the power tubes to break up (output stage distortion). No, if you want them to. The volume pot in the FX Loop will change how your amp sounds because of that. But so does the attenuator, just for another reason.
@The_Macaroon3 жыл бұрын
@@humann0x thanks Sebastian 👍
@humann0x3 жыл бұрын
@@The_Macaroon Welcome. I think that, if you have a compressor or another pedal with a volume/level poti, you can try out to lower the signal with it in the FX loop.

When I told my guitar that you also practice without an amp, she refused to answer...She is an old, noble, and elegant lady, just wood and nylon strings...She hates me because I still do not understand here, and she is jealous too because sometimes I have a kind of blues on my mind instead of the transparent shadows of the baroque music...

I have the Micro cube, and as we talked about before, the Monoprice version of the Harley Benton. The Micro cube I only keep around because it's great for portable guitar testing when buying guitars from Marketplace or whatnot. Aside from that, I hate it, but I've become a tube snob, lol I'd kill for a 1987, and for the right price, would take a DSL 1. For the same reasons as the Micro cube, I can't get me head around Katanas either. The Monoprice/Harley Benton 15 is so good, I rarely plug in to my Egnater anymore. I'd consider getting the 5 watt model too.

Why don’t amp manufacturers design a small amp targeted for low volume practice, with an attenuator in the last stage?
