I don't have the a7s2 or the a7s, but if you're judging exposure off of the screen instead of some type of exposure tool, then you don't know what you're doing (especially if you're shooting a flavor of s-log). USE THAT HISTOGRAM!

DOF does not get influenced by Sensor size. That is just a misconception because DOF gets influenced only by 3 things - Distance, Aperture, Focal Length. The 4th factor, Sensor, is actually a common misconception because if you think about it, having your subject in focus on a FF 25mm lens at 1 meter away is the same as using a 50mm and you would have to move 2 meters away to keep the framing OR it's the same as using that same 25mm on a 2xCrop sensor and moving 2 meters away again to keep the framing (don't think about the compression of space, we're only interested in DOF). So, in summary, It's not the Sensor size, it's the fact that a 25mm looks like a 50mm on a 2xSensor, which means that 50mm

All points, at least the first three can be overcome by using the Atomos support options, Samurai HD Recorder for external 4K recording at 4:2:2 and the Power Pack for external powering. Samurai HD Recorder also has focus peaking so much easier to nail critical focus. I think the review is cool but this camera caters not just to the consumer who would probably settle for the default restrictions of the camera, and probably not reach them given their potential lack of understanding of filmmaking and their needs from the system. It is also a tool for the professional shooter who normally wouldn't expect to have an all singing, all dancing system straight out of the box. Tech doesn't work that way, it's best exploited when using third party support hardware and peripherals.

I don´t think you´ve done a very good job here, Max. This could have been a great opportunity to highlight issues that Sony could really pick up on for the next gen, issues that irk people who actually use these cameras. Yet it´s mostly the standard very well known issues that are getting fixed or are basically unreasonable, characteristic of people who read more spec sheets rather than actually use the cameras. Overheating- already fixed through a firmware update.. LCD Screen- If you´re using the LCD to gauge your exposure, you´re doing it wrong, seriously. It´s useful for checking composition and reading info like zebras etc. NOT as a calibrated monitor, no camera has an LCD that can be used as a calibrated monitor. There´s really no need for it to be any better, it relays info and composition perfectly well, there are other issues far more important. Compression- Is actually pretty amazing for a camera this size. Does anyone honestly expect 4:2:2 internal rec from a camera that can fit in our pocket in 2015? Lenses- They are releasing FF lenses faster than any other manufacturer. It has easily the most adaptable mount of any camera (e-mount), so you can use virtually anything, vintage, EF, Nikon, whatever.. As I see it, far more pressing issues are: The custom button choices and menus. We need more functions to be able to be mapped to the custom buttons, because the menus are a poorly designed time sink. Better menus, more custom options. No Phase detect like the A7rii. This is a horrible oversight in a camera that costs the same as the A7rii. The A7rii has WAY better AF, Eye AF, face detect etc. This is really poor from Sony, and almost means the A7rii is a better camera than the A7sii. It even affects the focus peaking, so the A7rii is just far better at nailing focus.

As far as bitrate goes, I don't think that 4k recording requires 4x the bitrate as 1080p to = the same quality. The codecs bitrate quality isn't proportional to a simple 4x equation. Also I sure wouldn't want those huge file sizes for a diminished return in quality. Hope that makes sense.
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
+jeffhalebopp Makes sense but why would you say if the codec is the same, but you have 4X the pixels, why you wouldn't need 4x the bit rate to have the same image quality. (legitimate question)
@jeffhalebopp9 жыл бұрын
+Max Yuryev You would ask wouldn't you? :) Yes it is a fair question. First off I'll admit that I don't understand the math and all the complexities of the algorithms H.264 uses for efficiency. I will do some research to see if I can come up with better information over opinion :) My logic is as follows (here goes): I think that as the resolution goes up, the codec has more pixels to determine how many macroblocks are required per scene. This gives it the possibility to use larger macroblocks per picture thus using less bitrate. It does this by using motion estimation between frames. If the picture isn't moving much, this should apply even more. Since it has more picture to work with (more pixels), it has more possibilities to be more efficient thus not requiring a linear bitrate requirement (4x for 4k over HD). I think there are many other factors that determine efficiency advantages when working with more pixels. Anyway I apologize for only giving my opinion. As always thanks for the vids. I have 2 G7's on order thanks to your video about the sale.
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
+jeffhalebopp Thank you for the explanation and you definitely may be right! 100mb/s seems to do a good enough job for most things but I'd love the option for a higher bitrate, especially when shooting LOG. Thanks for watching my vids :) Enjoy the G7's!

@timlevy18579 жыл бұрын
In regards to overheating - which card (speed) did you shoot to? If it is not fast, ie over 30MB/s, the camera needs to internally buffer before adding to card especially if shooting 4K. This can lead to overheating...

Would using a speedbooster solve the 120p crop problem? Or would that not be worth it?
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
+Bananas and Bass It would make it better yes, but not completely, It would go form a 2.2X crop to roughly 1.6-1.7crop.
@bananasandbass9 жыл бұрын
Oh why is that? I haven't used speed boosters before but I thought they convert a full-frame lens to project light on an APS-C size area. And if the camera records at an APS-C size crop factor, that would a 1 to 1 field of view right? I've seen in Phillip Bloom's review that he uses a speed booster to get back the full frame field of view back when using crop sensor mode. Though he wasn't testing 120p I think.
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
+Bananas and Bass yes that it true. it takes a 1.5 Crop and turns it into very close to full frame. The reason why it doesn't do it with 120fps because it's not a 1.5crop it's a 2.2crop.

My main beef is the compression as you mentioned, as well as the limited 8BIT HDMI output. However, isn't the HDMI 422 vs the 420 internal? I have also had luck transcoding footage first to prores before editing and color grading. Seems to help with the ever so prevalent color banding issue in the gradients.

In stills manual mode, can't adjust aperture or shutter speed after AF has locked. Must let go of shutter button then reset. I don't understand why, because video mode doesn't require that. My AMount Sony allows exposure adjustment any time. In stills manual mode (with native FE lenses, and smart adapted lenses both Sony and Canon), viewfinder flashes darker, or brighter while acquiring AF lock. It's disturbing. Doesn't happen during video. Doesn't happen with dumb adapted lenses. Doesn't happen with my Sony AMount system. Something odd about how EMount works stills mode with closed down preset aperture. In stills mode, with dual battery grip and tethering to computer... camera will not transfer power from batt 1 to batt 2. Tethering shuts down when batt 1 is at 25%, and refuses to transfer. Useless to have both batteries in camera while tethering. Frustrating with all the resets required in front of clients. With adapted lenses using Sony LAEA2, 3, and 4, none of Sony teleconverters are supported. Aperture just reads (--). No AF and no aperture control beyond shooting wide open. Can't do custom white balance while in video mode. Must go to stills mode, set, then return to video mode. Stinks. Both APS-C capture and Settings Effect ON/OFF should be available in quick menu. They're not, and require deep menu dive. Not good for togs who shoot between natural light and studio lighting. There are more issues, but these are the ones that affect my performance in front of clients.
@ctphotographx9 жыл бұрын
Oh... and the fly-by-wire focus system is still stinky for critical manual focus and video pull focus. Very unpredictable with mandatory accelerometer. Sony should allow user adjustment for linear focus mode. Also, when in manual focus, mandatory distance scale appears on viewfinder screen. This should be an option.

Honestly, A7SII users use this cam 95% in video mode. The Sony lens line up is so unimportant, because through Metabones, we can use all the EF-Lenses and other brands too. Don't come up with the limited AF then, because videoshooters use 99% manual AF anyway. On the other hand is the very good PZ 28-135 video lens which I own as well.

How do you feel about the 12 mp resolution? I feel like that is a pro and a con as well
@datalaforge9 жыл бұрын
+DracariaEntertainment for me, it's perfect. I don't mind 12mp at all.
@jasonlam85889 жыл бұрын
+T'sais 4k video is only 8 mp if you do the maths, so 12 mp is actually overkill, and the reason they didn't use like 24 mp is that they can use full sensor read out to produce the finest detail and low light performance. Cameras with higher megapixels have to use pixel bending to reduce the amount of information taken every frame. Unless you need more pixels for stills, in which case you should go for A7Rii, 12mp is perfect
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
+Jason Lam Keep in mind these sensors are 12MP when reading the full sensor, which is 3:2 format. When you're in video mode you shoot 16x9 format so that cuts off a bit of the top and bottom of the sensor so you're recording a 16x9 UHD 4K image which is perfectly 4K. So if you have a 3:2 sensor you need to to be 12MP to be able to record 4K. Micro 4/3rds sensors at 4:3 format which is more square. Its a 16MP sensor but in 3:2 its only 14MP. In 16x9 its something like 10MP so it has to crop slightly to achieve a 1:1 pixel readout for 4K.

Could not disagree with you any more on the display screen... if you can't verify focus with the screen then something is wrong with your eyes. In regards to lens selection: you can literally mount any lens made since 1940 on this camera via an adapter. I'm not aware of many pro video people who need AF for pro video. I do agree that 10-bit 422 is critically important moving forward. Thanks for posting your video.
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
+Bruce Bachand Maybe there is :) I've spokane to other video shooters that own the A7r2 and S2 and they agree that the screen is soft, as well as the punch in to focus. If you compare them side by side with a Canon DSLR or the GH4/NX1 they all have sharper screens. Your right about not needing AF for pro video, but at times it can be useful. Check out Tom Antos review on the A7s2.
@NothingButtTroll9 жыл бұрын
+Max Yuryev The problem is not the screen... But they crop (fit) the full 1080p or 4k image on the screen which compresses / renders the image really blurry... This is an issue on every a7 camera. It's a firmware / software issue. I'am personally really annoyed with this too. The a6000 doesnt seem to have this since my friend has one. and his screen is more wider I think a real 16:9 screen aspect.
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
+NothingButtTroll That makes sense, the NX1's screen in video mode look similar to the A7s2's until you go into video/pre rec mode and then it gets much much sharper. Similar thing when you go into photo view mode for previous shots. The processing of the image changes and its so clear that you don't need focus peeking or punch in to focus.

I am debating purchasing an external recorder. I've read a lot about the difference between 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 compression. While it's still 8-bit, do you think it would help with some of the compression issues like banding when shooting in s-log3? Also, can you do a video on the various picture profiles? It seems there are up and downsides to using slog2, slog3, gamma4, etc... It would be very helpful if someone could describe the differences in one video. Thanks!

I have to disagree with over heating on the A7s II. I just received mine and I let it record for a hour straight in 4K to see if it would over heat and it did not over heat. I've just joined Sony coming from Canon 5d III and it is a huge upgrade as far as video goes.. Low light, zoom Focusing is faster and keeping things in focus is superior as to the problems I encountered on the 5d's, internal stabilization is a plus and it has a built in leveler bubble I have NOTHING at all bad to say about this camera except it's not 10bit but other than that it's awesome I love mines. Max a thoughtful review thank you. Not sure about the prosumer market here you are talking about. For Broadcast Sony rule the roost along with Arri, Red etc. We deal with quite a lot of content from Sony F5 and F55's. B shot footage often comes in from the a7Rii's and now the a7Sii's. GoPro footage comes in and just seen some Osmo footage. Never seen any GH4 footage come in that I know about. I have a7Rii and a7Sii and of course my GH4 which gathers dust. One vocal supporter of the a7 range has been Philip Bloom who has now been using his a7Sii for B footage for his latest documentary series. Philip is shooting this for one of the big American broadcasters. I believe he really liked his GH4 but like me, it is now not being used much. I still use mine for the Slomo which I do think is rather nice. I believe contextually you are correct in terms of prosumer and stuff like Wedding videography. For Broadcast this is not the case. Sony supply sensors to most other camera manufacturers and they will only go from strength to strength in this mirrorless market. So we in the Broadcast sector wait in huge anticipation as to the next technological marvel Sony will introduce in to the market place Thanks for your reviews please keep up the good work and efforts you put in to them. #sony #Sonybroadcast

Why separate these pros\cons videos? I think that ~10min is probably acceptable in terms of video length, and not only does combining the video help avoid misrepresentation, it also will reduce redundant content such as the intro\outro and repeating of the "check out the other video".. these features together probably accounting for at least a couple of minutes, or an incredible 1/6th of your time wasted.
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
You may be right, but lots of viewers fall off after 5min so a 10min video may do ok but it's too long for many people. It's also harder to do a title for it :)

+Hamish McGregor I prefer them to be separated - the comments section can get cluttered with flame wars, otherwise. Also, you don't get lost in that swinging between yes or no as you watch. It is much easier to go back to the Pros video to remind you why you were interested in the first place or to go from there to the Cons video to temper the possibility of impulse buying. All written reviews on buying sites employ this method as well (apart from dedicated Sony, Panasonic, Canon etc sites, which won't have a bad word spoken about any of their products).

Hello Max. I really enjoyed this video, thank you. Sorry, a bit off subject, but I was wondering if you have done any videos about the best micro 4/3 lenses for video? There are so many lenses available now, I think over 50 from all the manufacturers combined, and new ones coming out all the time, and trying to decide which ones are good value for money for using with a G7 or GH4 are difficult. Of course things like sharpness, weight, size, practicality of focal length for video, and cost are all important considerations. Some of the inexpensive pancake lenses seem like the best choice in terms of size, cost and weight, but not sure how they stack up in terms of image quality (colors, contrast, and sharpness) and if they have a full range of pancake lenses available to cover all the most useful video focal lengths? Anyway, keep up the great videos. Thanks.

+0007 1419 Thanks! Most of the mid to higher priced M43 lenses are good. I'd avoid anything with a F3.5 and higher aperture unless your shooting in good daylight because low lenses paired with small sensor give a bad image in low light. 20mm F1.7, 25mm 1.7, and 42.5mm F1.7 are all awesome lenses for the money. If you want a great wide angle lens thats low prices then go for the Rokinon 12mm F2 lens. Its manual but its easy to manual focus with wide lenses. If you need a zoom lens then the 12-35mm F2.8 is your first choice. Really sharp, small/light, and much more affordable now then when it came out.

I agree on the low quality LCD screen. For the price it's a crappy screen compared to a DSLR LCD.

I never had an issue with overheating. But I am not that much into videography. What sucks most from my perspective are: 1. When you change your lens you have to be super-careful of not letting dust or water drops getting on the sensor. That's really a threat as the sensor is not protected by a mirror any longer. 2. Thermal noise. I had really issues with thermal noise while doing astrophotography. Never had such issues with my Nikon D810. 3. Battery lifetime sucks. Plugging a battery grip on the camera is basically neutralizing the advantage of mirrorless what's dimension and size. 4. Lens availability. Granted, situation is getting better. But look at these HUGE GM lenses, terrible, the 85mm is even bigger than any of my DSLR 85mm. Still a great camera but it las its limitations people often forget.

BIGGEST downside for me was switching it on for the first time half an hour ago - completely dead. Tried charged batteries and no go - completely dead. Gutted isn't the word, as I will now have to return it and pay packaging as well as restocking charge because I could not get it out of the box without tearing it slightly (returned boxes have to be in pristine condition). Put me right off getting another one and have seen online that numerous people received dead a7s cameras first time around. Unbelievable. Haven't read anybody having a dead a7s2 anywhere on the net - just the first incarnation.

+Cockotahal Problem solved - the batteries were NOT charged even 1%. That goes for the batteries that came with the camera and the spares that were advertised as coming fully charged and ready to go. Turned out that all five batteries were at 0%. EVERY unboxing video I have seen of the a7sii and EVERY unboxing of the batteries I bought announced that the batteries came with some sort of charge - in every case, enough to custom set the camera and take some initial shots. I got the camera from Wex Photographic UK and the batteries off the same company. Thing is, I didn't get to use it for a day because I made sure that each individual battery was charged to 100% in case returns got stroppy with me - after the initial shock and tantrum, of course. Didn't sleep a wink that night :) When I saw the menu flash up the following day, all was forgiven. So a warning to folk buying this camera - don't assume that there is any charge in any brand new battery, even those that come boxed with the camera!

I'm going to wait! For the next generation Panasonic GH5. It will be here soon as we're almost to 2016. I believe it's not only going to blow Sony's ass off in most respects, Panasonic will make sure it a dependable workhorse such as the GH3 and GH4. PANASONIC will price the GH5 accordingly I'm sure. I'm not going to waist my money on Sony's $3,500.00 price tag on any of the A7 cameras. The price tag Sony's put on theses cameras have been unrealistic for an unreliable 4k mirrorless camera body. I'm a professional, and I believe other professionals would agree... first and foremost, I need a camera I can depend on all day long, not 30 minutes if it doesn't overheat first. Cheers
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
+Richard James Milne I'm excited to see what the GH5 brings. REALLY hoping for IBIS as its really useful at times.
@IslandFilmMaker9 жыл бұрын
Yes, IBIS needs to be incorporated in the body with much improved (useable) AF and possibily new light power zoom Cine lenses would put the icing on the cake and eat it too :)
@cws_dp9 жыл бұрын
+Richard James Milne There's nothing 'unreliable' about this camera. In what situations do you plan on rolling non-stop for 45 minutes? I think the cameras are geared toward filmmakers, not toward people covering public speakers at conferences. If that's the kind of work you are recording, 4K and an SLR body are probably already ill informed choices. We're not talking about micro 4/3 sensors here in these Sony cameras... the A7 cameras have Full 35mm sensors, the same as 35mm film. Micro 4/3 is consumer grade and nothing more.
@DeejaySlamBB9 жыл бұрын
I'm actually realizing that there are at least 2 very different categories of video shooters. Those who cover weddings, conferences, events, who need to record long videos and don't care about bokeh and dynamic range...and those who shoot music videos, short films who don't care about being able to shoot 30 min, or AF, or flip screen or battery life. The second category understands the first, but not the opposite. The first category think that 3500$ is way to expensive for a camera that cannot shoot over 30minutes without overheating. The second category thinks that 3500$ is actually cheap for a full frame camera with the dynamic range of a 50.000$ camera, and those low light capabilities. Obviously a 3500$ camera with the DR of a 50000$ one, has downsides !
@MaksimYuryev9 жыл бұрын
+Bruno Slam Mostly agree. I do both actually and for my wedding "Films" thats are shot and editing in cinematic style, I do want dynamic range, shallow DOF, ect. And definitely don't think that $3500 is too much but would like it not to overheat :) My next cameras maybe in the $5-7K range.

I have been through 2 a7s II models and have been having an issue with some horizontal like noise in the image when using Slog3 that is only between ISO 1600 to 10000. It's not super noticeable in well lit images, but more in deep shadows, and hard to see until iso 6400. I'm trying to determine if it's just in the bodies I've tested, or in all a7sII's. Do you think you could try and repeat the problem on yours and let me know what results you get? I would think that battery life is also one of the downsides to this camera. I couldn't use it in my work without a better battery solution. The overheating makes me nervous, even if it doesn't shut down, you have to think that the performance of the sensor and the life of the camera must be compromised. Gerry in Calgary.

4k is not 4x the resolution of 1080p. It's 2x as 1920x1080 is nearly 2k. Also, APS-C Crop mode does not give you increased depth of field - the size of the sensor is not changing, you have merely cropped in on it. This is the same as if you had loaded a photo into Photoshop and cropped in. Your depth of field will not change.
@AlimHaque9 жыл бұрын
1080p = 1920*1080 4K = 3840 * 2160 Do the maths, 4K = 4 * 1080p
@cws_dp9 жыл бұрын
+Alim Haque Wrong. You cannot just choose which numbers to multiply. 1920*2=3840 and 1080*2=2160. 3840x2160 is 4K UHD which has TWICE the resolution of HD. Nice talking to you.
@AlimHaque9 жыл бұрын
Cody Smith can't tell if you're a troll or just arrogant but resolution is the number of pixels in a grid. It has twice as many pixels horizontally and twice as many vertically therefore it has four times as many pixels in total. Make a 1080p box in photoshop and a 4k box and you'll see you can fit the 1080p box into the 4k box four times.
@cws_dp9 жыл бұрын
+Alim Haque Here you go, sweetie. www.redsharknews.com/technology/item/1650-is-4k-twice-or-four-times-as-good-as-hd You can thank me later for the lesson in resolution vs number of pixels. And next time you can check your own arrogance at the door when questioning a professional.
@AlimHaque9 жыл бұрын
+Cody Smith In that case there's a discrepancy and having researched it further I would say you are strictly correct, but that is not to say the video is not also correct. Imagine there's a 200 x 100 screen and a 100 x 100 screen with the same physical size, most of us here would say the 200 x 100 had the higher resolution, you'd say it's only higher in the single dimension. It's sums vs products. TV manufacturers say ultra HD is 4 times the resolution of full HD and they're not incorrect. At my computer science course at college it was taught by the area but now I do understand your point. Is this one of those things that people get worked up about that don't matter at all? I wonder which way others watching this video would argue?

The biggest issues are no 4:2:2 out through hdmi. 30 min recording limit (cause of taxation) And 4k is not using 200mbsp for true UHD Overheats while dual recording Umm also I'm pretty sure you can increase the brightness of the LCD Max
@Taylorharrisonfilm9 жыл бұрын
+T'sais Assuming you mean fullframe, not sure. This is my first personal full frame. I've used m43, apsc, for awhile and wanted a personal fullframe camera with some variation of log and I was not going to buy a black magic camera pocket, or cinema cam. I like this a lot because of its small footprint, I can set it up very quick and get my shots. I can expose for a lot of situations. I think you can do some decent work photography wise, but the high iso performance does not yield great pictures. The problem is I am having a hard time finding something in this price range that can do better. The Gh4 is amazing for its price, and then you could pick up a G7 panasonic for cheap and use that as your B cam. I like what I've been seeing from the Black Magic URSA but its kind of going the RED route where the base camera is a lower price point, but in reality you need another 3 thousand dollars to properly kit it out. But I am finding that the A7S2 is very similar, Sony charges for apps where many of those software functionalities would be standard functions are say Nikon or Canon cameras. Sony's lenses fall in to two camps, either they are affordable and yield mediocre results, or are stupid expensive and yield acceptable to excellent results. If I only had 3000$ I'd kit out a Gh4 and deal with the m43 sensor. If I had 6grand I would kit out a sony a7s2 or a7r2. If I had 10000$ I'd think about an fs7 or black magic ursa.
