Good info. I believe that I had my avionics shop add a jack so that I could connect my portable radio to the plane's antenna. I don't know the distance that the handheld radios can transmit / receive.

Yes, that's a great idea if you own your airplane. With the portable antenna, transmit range is about 8-15 miles (depending on altitude); with the installed antenna it easily doubles that range.
