I also like those compressed cotton 'towels' that release with a little water. They're a looser weave than baby wipes, so fold them over for that particular use. But they're good for multiple things. I keep them in my first aid kit, and they're good for wiping down stuff without the baby wipe residue (wounds, cleaning your face, cooking gear, etc).

Carry the 10 Essentials. Any time you leave sight of the trail head, be prepared to spend a night in the woods. Baby Wipes: Pack it in, pack it out. Leave no trace. ~S

I would recommend that total newbies find a friend who is experienced and can help get them started. Second hand stores are a option to start collecting gear at a reasonable price.

It’s typically an embarrassing question so most of us just don’t ask it. Remember- leave no trace. Bring a ziplock for your wipes 😉 Happy hiking!
