In the Original, you wanted to see our heroes end up with Earth in sight leaving the Cylons behind. The remake u wanted everyone on the show humans and Cylons to crash into the Sun.

In the remake, the one thing that I hated more than the politics and everything that went with it, was how everyone hated everyone else! By the 4th or 5th episode of the first season, I was wanting the Galactica to tell the civilians to screw themselves and leave them for the Cylon. I stopped watching soon afterwards. I don't ever intend to watch anymore of it but will and have watched the original series again and again. One of the best scenes in the original series was when an unknown sickness swept through the Fleet, the Cylons were going to attack and all the viper pilots walked out of the infirmary and the Dr demanded that they return to sickbay "because they could barely stand." Then Boomer said, "a Viper is flown in a sitting position." Awesome scene!

I'll take the original over the remake any day. I agree with your points. In particular, it's hard to get invested in a show when the characters are all backstabbing assholes, so there's nobody you can really support. Stardoe was especially over-the-top and irritating. But also, the ending was a huge cop-out. All along, the opening narration said that the Cylons had a plan. But we never found out what that plan was. There was no real payoff. And with the relentlessly dark tone, the show is a real slog to get through. Nobody ever cracks a joke, which is unrealistic. Real people use humor to help get through tough situations. The show was clearly not planned out ahead of time as carefully as it should have been.

The characters were so bad I just wished they'd all succeed in killing each other. But that was just a reflection of the real problem. The producer and writers. The writers had to have been aspiring soap opera writers who weren't good enough to even work for days of our lives, and Ron Moore was happy to have them. Richard Hatch must have done one too many of his own stunts not to realize that he was the only person involved who didn't despise the real show.

The remake jumped the shark with the ending of season 2. The second half of the show was very dreary and disappointing. But I think the overall writing quality and unpredictability of the 2nd show made it better. Yes, the Cylon plan was disappointing. It felt like a weak payoff. Angel Starbuck? Tigh was a Cylon? It go so freaking depressing. And let's face it, it also didn't have Dirk Bendict. But I appreciated the moral dilemmas and tough questions- for awhile, anyways.

One thing that you overlooked that Classic BSG had over t he remake was their costumes. The Warrior uniforms had a very Egyptian feel to them, especially their dress uniforms. The helmets were obviously modeled after Egyptian headdress which helped draw a connection between the Colonials and Earth, as it was suggested in the opening narration. The remake abandoned all of that in favor of jumpsuits and more recognizable military type uniforms. For me, such attention to detail on the original uniforms greatly added to the charm of the Classic series.

This! I lost suspension of disbelief in the remake immediately upon seeing the characters going around in whatever the actors decided to buy at The Gap. How did this culture from a set of alien planets turn out to be early 21st century Americans? The Original was cheesy, sure, but the links to ancient Earth cultures (Egypt, and Greece, e.g. "Cassiopeia") made sense of why they were trying to go to Earth in the first place. However, they weren't _exact copies_ of ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Sumerians, etc. Instead, their costume choices conveyed the idea that they were once culturally connected to Earth in ancient times, but their culture (and ours) diverged after the separation. The creators of the remake obviously wanted to write about modern Americans. IIRC the main creator said "it's about _us"_ i.e., modern Americans, rather than a future culture as in Star Trek. They should have just made it _Final Countdown: The Series._ _Final Countdown_ was a movie about a US aircraft carrier that gets thrown back in time to the attack on Pearl Harbor, and has to decide if they want to intervene in history. Just have them get transported to a different planet/location/time for each episode, and you've got your story about a wandering American military force.

What I like about original BSG is the implied premise, which unfortunately got kind of abandoned: the BSG crew will eventually reach earth and serve as the basis of the myths of the various peoples we know today. So you've got Adama as the first man, Apollo flying across the heavens in his chariot, Athena the wise, and so on. Now as of "Galactica 1980" they officially ditched that notion, but at least in the original series it was a thing.

Thank you for your comment! I completely agree with you about the implied premise of the original BSG. The idea that the crew of the Battlestar Galactica would eventually reach Earth and become the basis for various myths and legends is a fascinating concept. The show certainly hinted at that in its earlier seasons, and it's a shame that they eventually abandoned that notion in Galactica 1980. However, even without it, the original BSG remains a classic in its own right. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Boy are you ever wrong!!!! The original BSG took place as it was airing, NOT in the past. The opening narration clearly stated that, "... there may yet be brothers of man who fight to survive somewhere among the heavens". And then there was the episode where they picked up the transmission of the Apollo 11 landing, but didn't see it because they'd walked away from the receiver. And when I met Richard Hatch for the first time at the San Diego Comic-con the last thing I said to him before I walked away was, "By the way... 'Galactica 1980' SUCKED"!!!! He grinned really big, clapped me on the shoulder and roared, "IT NEVER HAPPENED"!!!!!! And we both had a damned good laugh at that.

All right; I agree that Galactica 1980 was no good. I think no one disagress in such assertion. But I humbly disagree that Galactica 1980 abandoned the original premise of BSG. Eons ago the 13th colony had left the galaxy where the other 12th colonies remained. That 13th colony reached Earth and settled on this planet, so they were indeed the basis of the myths of the various people on Earth. In my mind, the 13th colony could have been the island of Atlantis, which ended up being destroyed. Again, this is just me putting different myths together (nothing in the BSG canon attaches the 13th colony to Atlantis on Earth as far as I remember). In any case, in Galactica 1980 the survivors of the 12th colonies finally arrive to Earth in present day -- only to find out that we are technologically/socially immature given that the 13th colony ended due to an unknown catastrophe on Earth. Makes sense? I think this has a pretty tight logic.
@TommygunNG
@TommygunNG Жыл бұрын
Correct. It was set in the then present day. The implication was that old mythologies here on Earth derived from the 13th colony, and their experience on Kobal. Apollo and Athena were named after gods, sort of like how Roman Catholics name their kids after saints.

I was skeptical when I saw your title, so I heard you out. I think you're right. And I think the reason you're right is, that the original was made in a day when Good and Evil, right and wrong, heroes and villains were foundational concepts. Today, those lines have been nearly hopelessly blurred.

I also remember the original series with great fondness. A friend of mine would sometimes invite me over to his house to watch the reboot version on the SyFy Channel. I tried to follow the story, but it was not very easy to get into. There was the occasional decent or interesting scene, but it felt like you were required to wade through tons of dark, contrived, edgy melodrama in order to finally arrive at those all too brief moments. Just didn't seem worth it overall. I could tell they had cast some fairly talented actors. Unfortunately, I found just about all of the characters rather unlikable. As a result, I couldn't really get invested in what happened to them. While I thought most of the special effects looked pretty good, the CGI Cylon Centurions always felt very fake, especially compared to the menacing appearance of the original design.

OMG I agree with all you said but you left out a few more things. the original had a cast that cares about each other, humanity, the fleet, and more. I loved the dynamics of Apollo and Adama as father and son then Boxy as a grandson. The parent-child love was always there. They made them dysfunctional in the remake. They hated each other and were at odds all the time. Starbuck is a great character. He was a womanizer and lover of women and always down to have fun. he had two+ women that loved him and knew what he was and accepted him for his flaws he never hurt a woman he would defend them with his life while getting a kiss. he drank, smoked, gambled, and did all the vices but at the end of the day, he was the best pilot in the fleet and would die for any of them. he we lighthearted never took things too seriously and would be the first to fight if needed. He is the rogue that has seen it all even in the dark times and still somehow has a smile and puts one on everyone he is around. His loyalty we never in question ever. But the remake they said ok keep the vices and throw all the rest out. Boxy was do important to Apollo and making him a dad was important for the show. Nope, no kids in the remake. Casiopea and Athena great beautiful women that were tougher than the men at times stepped up and did things. The was more than eye candy and the fact they both loved the same man and he loved them and were willing to fight for him without hating each other was a dynamic that never was in the remake. The fact well in the pilot there are other aliens in the universe was great. Only humans in the remake. Maybe habitable worlds in the original and only a few in the remake. I can go on.

I especially appreciated the relationship between Adama and Boxy - they weren't related at all but you would never know it from the way they interacted - when his mom died he stayed with his step dad and that made him the Commander's grandson, who just called him grampa, because that's who he was to him this was not a small thing like you might think "so what?" there are broken families all over the place - some dysfunctional others quite healthy but this was important really for two reasons actually (or more perhaps) one, it spoke to the character of Adama and of Apollo that they would adopt Boxy as their own - it would have been easy to say "we are important and we are too busy for kids" (or he reminds me too much of his mother and it's too painful to have him around and he's not my kid or my responsibility) but in their situation there would have been many orphans who would need to be taken in and cared for anyway the second reason which was of vital import to the story is that it was humanity on display which was exactly what was at stake - would humanity survive? with the survival of the human race on the line it was important to show humanity at its best - this is why we DESERVE to win because at the heart of everything we are good - if this was a game of thrones story one might say "who cares who wins - they could all die for all I care - they will probably all burn in hell anyway" but with this type story we are well defined as the good guys (except Boltar; he was the cowardly traitor held up for mockery and ridicule)

@@clarenceartman7487 yes yes yes, the parent-child is tight but the grandparent and grandchild even more. The humanity of the original is so so great. In a scene with Apollo and Sheba and a scene with Starbuck and Athena, they talk about a cleansing of fire from the holocaust. Boxy was part of it that cleansing, to the best of humanity in trying times, and shows how great was can be. Look at our own history during great disasters and how we all come together. I am part of a blended family. My step-siblings are my siblings. I have cousins that are only related by marriage. I have cousins that are not even that. But we are all still family and love each other. BG remake and many others seem to forget that. Maybe that is why I love the original it had a heart deep down in the story. The family was key. I am close to mine and like to see that representation on screen. They talk about LGBTQI, minorities, women, etc.. represented in shows. That is great and we need that. I have seen too many broken families on screen and in real life. I feel like of my friends I am the only one that has a loving family. That is why the original is so dear to me.

You could have stopped at the characters and had a compelling argument! During the first season of NextGen, a nearby UHF channel started rerunning Battlestar the same night. I had to watch through a blizzard of snow every week, but it was SUCH a relief to see fun, living breathing PEOPLE after dealing with the vacuous strawmen of NextGen! Sure stalwart heroes like Apollo and charming rogues like Starbuck were tropes already at that time, but the actors kept their portrayals fresh, even if some of the scripts were mighty stale! It's a shame ABC forced it into a regular series instead of quarterly event movies. I think it was the grind of putting an hour of TV on air every week that had them grasping for the poorer episodes in its run. I'll give you one more superior aspect of OG Galactica: world-building. Both shows eventually confirmed the relationship between the Colonies and Earth, though they did it in the two different ways. But the original show tried to create a "mother" society that had elements which would lead to the ancient societies and myths on Earth. The remake instead emulated modern American society and politics for the Colonies. It was mostly effective, but was too often on the nose to really explore a given issue in a science fiction context. The Original Star Trek was the master class in this kind of metaphorical story-telling, but it was never the backbone of the show.

Thank you for leaving such an insightful comment on our video! I couldn't agree with you more about the characters in the original Battlestar Galactica being a highlight. The portrayal of these characters, with their unique personalities and quirks, definitely made the show stand out compared to other sci-fi series of the time. And I completely understand why the original Galactica was such a welcome change of pace compared to the strawmen of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I also agree that the world-building in the original was superior, as it tried to create a society with roots in ancient Earth myths and societies. The remake's attempt at emulating modern American society was effective in some ways, but too often lacked the subtlety needed to explore complex issues in a science fiction context. The original Star Trek set the bar for this type of storytelling, and it's a shame that the original Battlestar Galactica wasn't given a chance to reach its full potential. Thank you again for your comments and for watching the video. It's always great to hear from fans of the series and to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of different sci-fi shows. The biggest problem with the remake is that they took away the fantasy Sci-Fi elements such as giving every character names and making the original names the callsigns. Not to mention adding familiar clothing also detracted from the original like we are really going to believe a society that has developed interstellar travel just happened to also develop clothing that exactly the same as Earth. Lastly the need to gender swap two of the characters was stupid considering they had females on the original who did become pilots, one of which was Apollo's sister Athena along with Cassiopia and Serina aka Apollo's wife.

Agree 1000% I loved seeing the original Starbuck plotting some scene to get rich only to have it fall apart at the last minute. It was hilarious at all the work he would do to accomplish when he could have been much more successful by being more straightforward. Lol. Even at that he was a loyal friend and would risk anything to help others. It was a refreshing counterpoint to the stuffy prim Apollo. I didn't like the gender swap they did to make him a woman. There where plenty of female warriors they could have cast the actress as that would have only changed the characters name. I saw it as an openly sexist change no no other purpose than removing a man from the cast.

Characters in the remake forgettable??? Eward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell alone elevated the new series to another level. There are so many scenes in the new BSG, which were unforgettable: The Lighter scene, the naming of the blackbird, "putting the fleet back together", "I've coming for all of you", Gaetas perfectly understandable mutiny, Duallas ending and a lot more. The difference to the original show was, that in the new BSG there were real people in an extreme situation, who had to make difficult decisions and "live with the consequences". It was far more adult. I admit, in the end they had the same problem as the original, where did they want to go with the premise? But as adult dramatic television the new series was far superior to the "jump on the Star Wars craze/mormon wagon train to the stars"-mix. Don't get me wrong, the old show has still a place in my heart, but it's childrens tv compared to the new version.

I watched both many times over. BSG was a favorite as a kid I loved every minute. It was disappointing some episodes and the series ended with some odd events. It was of course a product of that time period. The new BSG was done in a more realistic manner, darker and dirtier. It was much more spicy and twisted. It also did not have a solid ending but what can you do? Both were excellent for the decades they were developed in. We are all looking forward to the reboot soft one we hope.

I hope it has much more in common with the original than with the reboot except I do hope the characters are realistic as well as likeable - in the original they were caricatures of themselves especially the villains and Boltar in particular - if you want to make Adama and Apollo estranged I'm ok with that as long as they are real people and not plastic and predictable - a growth arc or even a downward spiral into alcoholism would at least add some realism But yeah, mostly like the first one but more true to life rather than comic book - the original was too comic book

I agree 100%, particularly where it was said that not a single, solitary character in the entire freaking reboot was likeable or relatable in any way ... at all. The reboot came out on the heels of 9/11, and when contrasted against the real-world events everyone was seeing in the news on a daily basis, it was abundantly clear that not a single, solitary character in the reboot was behaving in a way remotely consistent with how people would react in those circumstances. Suspension of disbelief gone. Plus there were so, SO many plot holes, it became clear the reboot script suffered from a complete lack of editing. It was, frankly, horrid.

One reason why I prefer the classic Battlestar Galactica to the reboot are the Cylons. They were robots, plain and simple. there was only one episode where there was a "Human Cylon". All these cloned, human spies was really strange. And the fact that the "evil" Cylons were monotheistic, and the "good" humans were polytheists really alienated a lot of people of faith, not only the Muslims (which I believe were the target), but Jewish and Christians too. The only things I liked about the reboot were the starships, the robotic Cylons,... and that is about it. Everything else about it was too dark, to "normal", to forgettable.

When it comes to the dark tone and political machinations, Babylon 5 has it beat hands down. That's the right way to do it. The actors in B5 created characters who you could believe would act that way in those circumstances and make you care for them. G'kar and Londo's arcs were so well done. The BSG remake was a long, sad, way behind B5 in that sense. It was neither good sci-fi nor good dark drama.

I couldn't agree more. The original was far better. Furthermore, in my opinion the remake had so many plot holes that critics just overlooked for their own convenience. For example, something that upset me was that the remake made the character Anastasia Dualla commit suicide out of the blue. Really? No explanation whatsoever. She just shot herself. She was one of the kindest and genuine individuals in the show -- she reminded me of the original BSG. I also dislike the ending of the remake -- Baltar and Number Six seem to convey that all humanity on Earth has the Cylon genes through Hera Agathon. But then humanity starts all over again as we develop robots and cyborgs here on Earth. Then, what's the point if humanity is bound to repeat history again and again? There is a giant premise of futility in the remake versus the premise of hope that the original series offered. And what about the final message of the remake? In every cycle humanity is supposed to get more Cylon genes? Then, what's the point? Let's just be all Cylons and be done with it. On top of that, I may be wrong but if I remember correctly the remake started to lose audience so the show was not being renewed. This cause the showrunners to wrap up the series quickly, leaving a bunch of plot holes in its fast marching pace to wrap up the series.

I lost suspension of disbelief in the remake immediately upon seeing the characters going around in whatever the actors decided to buy at The Gap. Oh, and when Red Dress Cylon Lady rolled up in a Hummer. WTF?! How did this civilization from a set of alien planets turn out to be early 21st century Americans? And not just similar, but _exactly_ like modern Americans? The Original was cheesy, sure, but the links to ancient Earth cultures (Egypt, Greece, the ancient Israelites, etc.) made sense of why they were trying to go to Earth in the first place. However, they weren't _exact copies_ of ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Israelites, Sumerians, etc. Instead, the show's costume choices conveyed the idea that they were once culturally connected to Earth in ancient times, but their culture (and ours) diverged after the separation. Or make _The Last Ship._ But that's not _Battlestar Galactica._

Ya, I agree with about the original vs 1980 remake. When I first viewed this video thought original vs 2000s Battlestar Galactica. I like the original over the BSG2k 1 main reason is they didn't use the original villians storyline --- The Cylons were actually reptiloids who created cyclon androids; but BSG 2k make a human the creator of the cylons.... 2ndly Starbuck is a male and keep it that; they could easily introduce some new female character and had Sheba. 3rdly This show was on when I was only 6 years old and always excited to watch it back in the late 70s and was so high tech back then. Both versions were deeply flawed, but I preferred the original for these reasons: 1. Likable characters. The protagonists in the original version were generally warm, decent people. In the remake, all the characters - human and Cylon - are unpleasant to varying degrees. Too many of them are self-righteous put-down artists. 2. Music. I'll take Stu Phillips' dramatic themes any day. 3. Costumes. The costumes in the original were great. In the remake, the Colonials look like ill-dressed furniture movers. 4. Sets. The sets in the original were bold and dynamic. The sets in the remake are, at best, pale versions of the original. In the remake, the Galactican sets look as if they were filmed at a water recycling plant. 5. Exterior designs. The original designs were iconic, the remakes were weak. There were multiple versions of Vipers in the remake, but none of them made the cut. The Cylon Raiders' "heads" look like Gort from the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still." 6. Themes. It's true that the original was a Reagan-Era rebuttal to the original Star Trek's progressive themes, but the remake's muddy theological conflicts were tedious. 7. Locations. The original actually had some shots done in Egypt. Any location shots done in the remake were made on an overcast day in British Columbia.

The Original BSG had more character and originality with space clothing, space vehicles, space weapon blasters in their story line, and with alien encounters along the way, as well as the characters worked better together to ensure their future survival. All of their ships had sub light speed in their space travel. Count Iblis as the cylon imperious leader was their greatest threat as he had evolved far beyond human capabilities in intellect and technology, but he was also the last surviving original cylon being from the original cylon wars who had sought to eradicate the human race before they too evolved as a species past their human potential to eventually far exceed his own. Eventually however the fleeing colonial fleet encounters yet another extra terrestrial human race far more evolved then their own by thousands of years, known as the Seraphs, who were the distant decedents of the original Lords Of Cobal and if it were not for this more evolved race then the colonial fleet would never have reached Earth 30 to 11 years later, because the Seraphs were able to help advance the colonial fleet's existing technology with more advanced space-time FTL travel, cloaking technology, and time travel capabilities, which we don't see until much later until Galactica 1980, which of course still didn't become possible until the introduction of a Seraph-Human hybrid character by the name of Dr Zee, who finally leads the Galactic and colonial fleet through an attempted final escape space-time FTL travel to Earth, which unfortunately we don't see much of in the original series in what would have been in the second season, but it is at least slightly hinted at later on in Galactical 1980. An original story line for an original perfect sci fi TV series, despite however the constant repeated space battle and space ship scenes, which I think could have been avoided despite it being a low budget film. Now the new BSG reboot was successful in avoiding the repeated space battle scenes, but had also eliminated altogether most if not all references to any possible Extra Terrestrial culture, making the colonial fleets more Earth human like then what it should have been, which in this case it was like replacing sci fi cultural originality with better CGI space battle effects, but for more low budget concepts while eliminating altogether the whole idea of anything being extra terrestrial and alien like, and futuristically culturally different beyond anything already known on Earth, with exception of them already having the space-time FTL drive, making the show to much Earth American socially dysfunctional melodrama like to even compare it to being anything believable as a true sci fi film, like completely Americanizing space alien humans who have never even been to Earth, while rewriting the Cylons as their own A.I. creations gone wrong as they see the destructive imperfection of the existing human race as they seek to be humanities replacements, like the A. I.s in the Terminator movie series, from which in this case the BSG reboot would have done a lot better as a completely different Si Fi film, which should never have been a BSG reboot.

Couldn´t agree more. I was a huge fan of Galactica, so I looked forward to the remake. But that wasn´t Galactica, it was something else, so I didn´t even bother to watch it.

As far as I am concerned the remark was and is a total disregard for the fans of the original, if it wasn't for us the interest in making another show would not have even been there. The original idea was completely scrapped, instead of the humans being heroes they were the bad guys, the old Frankenstein and his monster redo, in original the Cylons were their own race not an abandoned slave machine race produced by humans. The remake destroyed the originals humanity and changing some of the male characters into females was and is laughable. The ramake was a kick in the guts for the people who kept the interest alive, 30 years of support was wasted, there were younger people who grew up watching the show with their parents who became fans as well. Cheers and thanks for this video.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Battlestar Galactica. We understand that there are different perspectives and opinions on the reboot. The show creators aimed to pay homage to the original while also adding a modern twist. Although the reinterpretation may not have met everyone's expectations, it still generated a lot of interest and sparked discussions among fans. We appreciate your support for the original series and your passion for the show. Thank you for watching.

I loved tos much more than the remake, but there is one thing that bothered me about tos that the remake addressed. That is, in tos, the landing bays and launch tubes appeared to be open to space. Even as a 12 yo kid, I wondered how that worked.

I have to admit that when I first saw the remake, the first thing I said was, "Where are the cylons and muffit!" They were the 2 things I liked most about the show when I was a kid. The other thing I said was, "Starbuck isn't a girl!" By the end of the first episode of the remake, I was out. I never watched another episode. I remember how often Richard Hatch talked about bringing the show back. It's too bad that never happened. The other thing I must say is how AWESOME those uniforms were. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I've never seen costumes as cool as those uniforms in B.G. Well, that's my 2 cents. Thank you and good night! :)

I have to agree with you. I thought the remake had some fantastic and original scenes like when the Galactica did the tactical jump into a planets atmosphere to launch vipers. But overall the original is just infinitely more rewatch able. Great likable characters and a story you can understand.

I like your comparison, but to determine which one was best depends on the age of the viewer. The original was much more accessible to younger viewers like you said. OTOH, the remake was designed for adults and delivered in this regard. I was personally fortunate to be the right age for both series and I really enjoyed them both on this basis.

I was in my teens when BSG1 aired, and found it too childish to take seriously. Missed most of the episodes as a result. The remake, however, hit the nail square on the head. Absolutely the best thing on TV at the time, and right up there with Alien/Aliens in terms of sci-fi, and similarly intended for an adult audience.

I like them both but they are really 2 different types of shows. They share the name and many elements but the reboot was much more of a slow burn/dramatic kind of a series. I like it when re-boots do something different instead of just recycle the original. This frees up the writers and allows them to be more creative when they do not have to stick to canon or a storyline that they were not involved in creating they can use more of their own writing strengths.

I agree the original was far superior. ABC is always killing the golden goose. BSG was supposed to have two-hour specials, but they wanted the show every week. The ratings started to go down and so they cancelled the show. They should have just had four two-hour specials every year. Then the show could have lasted for five years with a good conclusion. Anyway, the original is far superior to the new version. Why does everything new have to be so dark and serious? The people in the 1970's knew how to have fun.

The original series had the benefit of not being aired during the "What's up the green polar bear" era of TV. It also was made during the peak era of event television. The writing is really good, and episodic TV like this is a lost art.

For me it was the mix of mythology and biblical spiritualism. I'm not saying it was a "religious" show, but it was a battle of Good vs Evil. As we saw in the two-parter with Count Iblis and the Ship of Lights. The episode when the warriors reimagined the Magnificent Seven from the raiders. Apollo vs Red Eye. How about the spiritual? Who can forget that opening shot on Lost Planet of the Gods when it opens on Kobol and Adama and Company are walking through the Pyramids of Giza then that musical score kicks up. Lastly Sacrifice, Cain sacrificing himself and the Pegasus to save his daughter, most of the Pegasus crew, the remnants of humanity by taking on 3 baseships alone. This was the Galactica of my childhood, and the one that I loved.

Each episode had a budget of $1 million in 1978. That should answer all the questions. Unfortunately, that was also the reason it was canceled.

The only way any show but especially a sci-fy show is going to make it ,, is the characters, they have to be likable, they should represent basic hero qualities with a few small flaws to humanize them, the reboot missed this by making everyone exactly like peoples neighbors and coworkers, their was nothing mythical or heroic about them,( as far as i could tell) i only saw the remakes pilot movie and never watch it again that left me with a feeling that all they wanted to do was destroy the orginals fanbase. Also hated Star Trek Discovery and Picard, for same reason. Enterprise was good Trek trying to connect the TOS to NG. Also loved Space 1999 and hope they DO NOT DO A REMAKE. The orginal Battlestar series had good characters and was a show about HOPE and how people can find the best in a bad situation, the Remake BSG was all about paranoia and despare with very forgetable characters, also never gender swap a main character and never add wokeism to the show, you can make great movies and tv without bedroom scenes. Question Did they do the Count Ibli story or have the people of Light in the remake?

I was 8 when the original came on t.v. and was instantly hooked by the opening of each episode with the narration, clips of the characters along with the score which gave me a sense of anticipation every week, in fact I almost got my full fill of satisfaction each week just watching the intro to every episode. I instantly connected with every character as each ones personalities were clearly defined and I knew what to expect based on their personality traits and I loved the lighter tone set by each episode because I always knew that no matter the odds against them the characters would pull together and get out of each situation (a message our current society could use), as for the remake I tried watching but simply could not connect with any of the characters, there was simply too much drama going on in the show too follow with just a taste of sci-fi thrown to each episode which made the remake too much of a soap opera set in space for me, I get that younger viewers found this to their taste with all the reality shows they have grown up on but it simply was not my cup of tea, and frankly (in my opinion) the remake was Battlestar Galactica IN NAME ONLY. They could have name it something else and it would not have made any difference to me in the slightest, hell they could have named it SPACE OPERA. All that being said I agree 100% on the reasons the original is superior than the remake it's a similar reason as to why the 80's "the thing" movie is superior than the 2011 the thing movie which was all flash no substance.

Like several other people noted, you had it at "Characters". Those in the original series were people you could root for and would want to hang out with. Loved the relationships between Adama and his children (true children Apollo and Athena, and semi-adoped son Starbuck); between the "hero triad" of Apollo, Boomer, and Starbuck; and between the "couples", Apollo/Serina and later Apollo/Sheba and Starbuck/Athena and Starbuck/Cassiopea. Those relationships were believable and you got a genuine sense of caring between them. By contrast, after watching the new series for just a few episodes, I wanted the Cylons to win. They were actually more interesting. The only even vaguely heroic/decent character was Helo and it was clear the showrunners simply didn't know how to write for someone who was actually a decent human being. I also hated the total character assassinations they did in their portrayal of Apollo and, especially, Colonel Tigh. Tigh in the original series was a fantastic character and a groundbreaking role for an actor of color on 1970s television. The change they made to that character in the new series was abhorrent. We won't even talk about how they messed up Starbuck -- as someone else noted, they not only kept all of the vices, they also made the new version so angry and unpleasant. Blech. Oh, and of course when it comes to the music, there's absolutely no comparison. The original Battlestar Galactica theme is epic (and it's my ringtone!); the new one....not so much.
