Alain brought me into ASL as well. Started Squad leader in 1983. Avoided ASL for reasons until about 2012. Then dipped my toes in and never looked back!

as a game designer, i can say this game design is bad because of complexity. but awesome because it is the best « anecdote factory » ever. you can tale each game in detail and it makes epic stories

Have you ever played Hearts of Iron 3 or Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 on the PC? It's theatre-level strategy but the depth is very impressive. You might also enjoy Graviteam Tactics: Mius Front (most realistic battalion level oversight).

Believe it or not I found Hearts of Iron too complicated to play as a computer game. Gary Grigsby has to be one of my all time favorite creators of PC wargaming - he's legendary. I have never heard of Graviteam Tactics I'll have to look them up; however, my primary focus is on board gaming as I need to use my cranium to play them.

How'd I miss this video? I agree with many of the points. My top reason is that ASL builds a narrative that sucks the players in like very few hex and counter wargames.

ALS is way too complex for most players. I played SL and COI way back in the day but even that was a challenge with all the rules. Spent more time referring to the rule book than playing the game. I bought ASL (and many other board wargames) knowing full well I'd never play it I just like the concept of the game. The "new" Second Front game uses many ALS rules and play mechanics and enforces the rules, so you don't have to. The Combat Mission series of games, I my opinion, cover low level tactics better and you don't have to memorize 500 pages of rules.

Thank you for your comment and watching the video. If you like you can check out my play list for historical computer simulations. Whatever game you decide to play, I hope it brings you enjoyment.

That old hard copy game w it's expansions or modules costs as much as a computer system I was 1st Gen Avalon Hill Squad leader have lost whole Battalions in pieces in the Tractor Works $500 for the first three pieces! Geez! Yaquinto, Panzer, Armor, '88'.

That was a maximum amount of bloviating my friend.

I like your top five, and mine are similar. I'd probably rate the historicity of the game as number one, but that would be the biggest change. Thanks for sharing.

Same for me. I got this a teenager and still have them in storage. I didn't get to play many games as my friends were not really into military board games, but I LOVED reading up on the scenario's and their aftermaths.

Good stuff George. I am going through an ASL revival after many years of neglect. My favorite thing is the Scenario system. Have a roomful of of wargames and a thing for maps. Just purchased “The Forgotten War” Korean War expansion. Half my collection is unpunched. Solo player, mostly Russian Front early days. Own but have never played “West of Alamein”, Code of Bushido”, “GungHo” and many of the modules. Sorry, I ramble.
