Thinking about going to the World Series of Board Gaming? Take $20 off (and put $20 into Board and Savior) with code SAVIOR at checkout!
So, I had an idea. An awful idea. I had a wonderful, awful idea...
Star Wars Rebellion is cool and all, but what if it took multiple days to play? What if every combat took 100x the time?
Would it be great? Would it drive you to madness? Why not both?

The biggest change this would bring is the delayed result of Rebellion combat. Surely the two rebellion players wouldn’t just sit around for a few hours waiting for the results: they’d need to make their next moves and set up the next few Armada/Legion games. Playing rebellion without knowing what you accomplished last turn would be very interesting

I’ve been doing this with friends for 2 years or so. 8-10 hours per combat is a bit much, it’s usually 6 or so lol. How we did it was we pre picked our ground forces in lists and we gave each token on the rebellion board a “company name” so is “A” company engaged “B” company the we would look at the lists and determine what units are in those companies and play each game separately, so rebellion, to armada, to swing to legion just like you pretty much described. 2 years and have yet to finish a campaign, it feels like a real war.

So I did exactly this while I was living in Austin with some Army buddies. It lasted a few turns but then fell apart but was fun. We solved most of your questions, all of the characters in Rebelion are in a miniature game, and we just had people commit where their heroes would fight ground or space. Since they are 'unique' they couldn't be in two places at once. People like Palpatine CAN lead fleets in Armada even if they are not in x-wing. We also abstracted the units in Rebellion into 'points' amounts instead. Example, troopers in Rebellion are 100 pts of ground forces. So a full army of Legion is 8 little rebel troopers, and things like speeders or walkers were larger denominations of points for those games. We did not use x-wing because squadrons were included in Armada already and Armada included more characters.

Joke's on you! This exact game setup is now living rent free in my head! Adding on to what was already addressed in the video, what I WOULD spin on this is play it like one of those Kriegspiel game day events. Get 3 levels of command: 1. Strategic Command - Top-level commanders in charge of playing the Theater level game. 2. Fleet/Field Command - Second Tier commanders in charge of fleet battles or army-scale battles. 3. Wing/Tactical Command - Platoon or Squad level commanders in charge of the smallest level skirmishes/dogfights. Strategic Command play out the Star Wars Rebellion scale games, deciding where the different fleets go, which planets to attack/defend, etc. Strategic Command is also in charge of allocating resources/logistics that would be dedicated to those theaters from their resource pool (what units are available, how many units of each, etc.) which they will need to keep track of. After all, if you sent Vader to invade Hoth, he wouldn't be around to defend the Death Star if it's three systems over. As for fleet engagements, Strategic Command will give orders to Fleet Command to play out fleet engagements in Star Wars Armada. And when fighter wings get launched at each other, Wing Command then gives order to Tactical Command to play out dogfights in X-wing. Combat resolution from the lower levels is then reported back up their respective chain of command only after the battle is complete, which frees up the allocated forces for activation at the higher levels. If the lower level games aren't done, it can't be given new orders. (Which is what's stated in the video.) Ground Combat is resolved similarly. Strategic Command picks a planet to engage. If there are opponents on the planet, play out the engagement at the Field Command level using Star Wars Legion. Because having units just erased out of the game is bad for the game, just have "destroyed" units put on cool down for a turn or two (or with whatever game turn mechanic is used for Strategic Command) until they can be re-allocated back to the battlescape. This simulates evacuating unit casualties, repairing and restocking of lost war assets, or just replenishing lost supplies to bring the unit back to its original fighting strength. Remember that "destroyed" units doesn't necessarily mean "dead" units. They're just taken out of the fight. And to even better simulate true Fog of War, have all the different level of command play in separate rooms so that the lower level commands don't really know what's going on at the higher levels. The only real meta knowledge they'll get is via their own immediate superiors or juniors in the chain of command. Obviously, you'll need about as many low level commanders as you have battlescapes, with only 1 or 2 Strategic Command at the top. I'd say a good ratio for each side would be 1 Strategic Command - 3 Fleet/Field Command - 3 Wing/Tactical Command. This means that while the lower levels are frantically fighting each other in a timely manner, the top level Command then have to plan ahead and react to the changing battlescape. This all happening at the same time. If you want to get even deeper, have a side game of Star Wars Imperial Assault run by Tactical Command going in the background away from the main theaters, representing commando units operating independently to sabotage the opponent or procure additional resources. This will be represented as additional resources that Strategic Command can use to bolster their battlescape, or result in units in the Fleet/Field Command level being unusable at the start of certain engagements. Insanity is just the beginning of this madness lol.
@boardandsaviorgames
@boardandsaviorgames 3 ай бұрын
This is exactly the kind of well-thought-out BONKERS response I was hoping for. Sounds like we’re gonna need to rent out a hall for this, but what’s a little more madness? I particularly love the idea of Imperial Assault games to determine the results of Sabotage attempts and the like… truly too much, which is, of course, perfect.
@StevanEC
@StevanEC 3 ай бұрын
Really like your idea, but the Strategic Command will be bored because them no playing as frequently as the other lower command levels. How can you manage that?
@RavenAdventwings
@RavenAdventwings 3 ай бұрын
@@StevanEC That's indeed a concern that I see. I intended that for the Strategic level commanders, their primary task would be more towards the allocation and assignment of war efforts and less on the dice-throwing, as they're not the ones actually doing the fighting. Kinda like the Field Marshal of each side. And they're not moving around 1 unit at a time. In that turn, they could be moving 2-3 different units around the board, assigning units from their pool of units to each battlescape. That's where having multiple Field/Fleet Commanders come into play. Strategic Command can still assign Tactical Commanders commando orders, but it's the Tactical Commanders who are actually doing the dice-rolling (in Imperial Assault skirmish). Though because you're getting lots of downtime while the lower levels are duking it out, I suppose their duties are more managerial positions than actual battling. So perhaps the mindgames is going to be more taxing because of information overload... I'm all ears, though. Everyone at the game table should have some enjoyment out of it. Pushing papers even in a wargame does sound kinda boring (lol).

So a lot of this concept was built in with the evolution of Battletech/Aerotech in the 80's-90's; You begin at the star system level, use your capital ships and fighters to contest landing areas on the planetary scale, with different elevation levels "zooming in" until the forces are able to make planetfall; then you can shift to Battleforce if you have large batallion/regimental size force movements, followed by classic Battletech for individual unit skirmishes, up to say company size if you want to devote a whole day to a single engagement. I can confirm from anecdotal evidence that you can easily expect taking a single system to last several months to a year with weekend games. It'd be neat to see the games in another IP like Star Wars develop the granularity and ties between the different levels of combat with explicit RAW like the Battletech system did,

@kalskirata42

this is basically Empire at War turned into a turn-based strategy game with rpg elements, and I'd argue that certain missions that don't require large-scale combat (diplomatic contention, infiltration, interrogation, etc) would be doable with the ttrpg rules, where that mission is a dnd one-shot that determines the outcome. Also, reinforcements can be brought in, but only from adjacent systems, and the player calling them in has to survive for however many turns it takes for that force to arrive. If that player loses that combat, the reinforcements are returned to their originating system. This can also work for withdrawals, where a fleet has to stand guard for ground forces to evacuate, and the defending fleet has to draw fire for so many turns in order for the transports to exit the system entirely. There's a Battletech-scale rpg system sitting there, waiting for FFG to capitalize on it with Star Wars. Modiphius is doing this with their new Homeworld tabletop titles

I actually like this idea for a long-form campaign for a whole gaming group. If the results of the space combat don't effect the ground combat, then there's no reason Armada and Legion couldn't be played at the same time by different players. Divide up the players into teams, elect or rotate someone to make moves for the team in Rebellion, then resolve all of the Armada and Legion games for each turn simultaneously. Zooming in for X-Wing to determine dogfights in Armada is the only thing I probably wouldn't do, just because it wouldn't really be possible to keep the Armada games moving. Alternate turns in Rebellion to fill a game night, and you could run the campaign weekly until a winner is determined.

A few notes for this homebrew I can think of, for the mercy of time and maybe even prolonging the game, I can think of a few rules: Disengagement: players fearing overwhelming odds or the loss of important pieces can attempt to retreat off the board, however the other side has one more turn to press the attack or reposition. Surviving pieces live to fight another day. Units that cross the planet side boundary join legion forces as reinforcements. (Note this works for bypassing armada conflict and skipping to legions it’s probably recommended to have 6 friends) Hero finality: Heroes can and should be allowed to play in whichever role they want, either a fleet commander or a squadron. HOWEVER if a hero dies they are dead for about 5-10 Rebellion turns. So players need to be cautious or selective to where they place their heroes. Multi war transitions: this will probably require 6 players, but the battles above and below can and may happen concurrently. Units that engage in xwing dogfighting have to play their round during armadas squadron phase, squadrons and ships that are able to reach the planet are transported into Lefions depending on strength of the piece that crosses the boundary. (Ex: a star destroyer along with a few tie fighters manage to pass over the rebel fleet defending. That ship is now translated as a vehicle and platoon, while those tie fighters translate to 2 stormtroopers. Rebellion can do the same) also legion troops can always retreat to armada orbit. Damage carries over: say you’re wreckless and send your ship straight past the rebel fleet and the rebel fleet blasts your ship to hell, but you make it to the surface, unfortunately for you the amount of health and crew damage you have translates into the men you can deploy. Same goes for if you retreat and took heavy losses that ship goes back to armada at an even weaker state. This should make the game probably a bit more manageable as you don’t have to play a full game of armada and legion and xwing and since you’ll likely be choosing engagements more carefully, you’ll likely get bored and decide to play something else.

For the record, armada has a mechanic for figuring out which squadrons are involved in an engagement. its called engagement. If a squad is within distance 1 of an enemy squad it is engaged. Engaged squads cannot move and can only attack other engaged squads. Ill also note, armada has unique squadrons that overlap with xwing.

My friend and I were brainstorming ways to add more depth to our Legion/X-Wing Battles, and we came up with the idea of creating a campaign mode. We hadn't considered rebellion before, so this is purely genius! One thing I would change, though, is that ground units wouldn't represent their exact unit type in Legion but rather a specific amount of tickets or battle points. If you play it this way, you'd be able to create more unique armies and add variety to the ground battles.

I did something similar to this with my regular group, ran it for 2 years, and it was even more involved that your idea. Instead of Rebellion we built our own sector, called Talathen sector, and i made a grand strategy game to go over that. We would then decide what missions and events were happening. Legion wasn't out then, so we used Imperial Assault, but we also used the FFG roleplaying games as well. I wrote the first year of it up on a blog under "talathen sector campaign". Lots of mission reports logged there, as well as my silly OTT grand campaign rules. (I ran it like a D&D DM) Two of my players having kids mid campaign somewhat killed the momentum, but we did wrap it up with a finale. I just didnt write up the back half of the campaign.

And for a board game history lesson. The mad lads over at Games Workshop actually made a game where the fights in the game were to be done as full blown Warhammer fantasy battle battles. That was the game pitch, a big empire building board game where you then fight the pitched battles with hundreds of minis. The game was called Mighty Empires, and there are some folks out there with some pretty epic stories about it.

I've done something a little related to this: I've run a short campaign of Star Wars RPG based on Imperial Assault core box where we transitioned between TTRPG segments and the missions in Imperial Assault with some homebrew carryovers from one to the other. Also, the two space combat segments were actually carried out in X-Wing rather than using the RPG rules. I've also considered the Rebellion -> miniatures game connection, but that'd require me to invest in Armada and Legion and I'm not willing to go there yet.

@@boardandsaviorgames On the plus side, doing this doesn't actually add any time to gameplay--you're just playing all the different parts linearly instead of going macro-to-micro. So as long as you have 4 players up for playing a blend of RPG and board game, you can do this in just the time of one plus the other. The real benefit of incorporating the RPG into Imperial Assault is that it gives both the missions and the characters a lot more meaning because Imperial Assault is a little light on story.

FASA actually implemented this very design decades ago for a game called Renegade Legion. Not only could you zoom in on an individual battle from the Prefect system of the game line, you could run the elements of that battle concurrently, with a fleet engagement (Leviathan system), a tactical fighter engagement (Interceptor) and a ground engagement (Centurion). So for example a capital ship could swing overhead in the midst of a ship battle and engage in ground support fire, fighters could break through and engage in strafing runs, that sort of thing.

In 1998 I was a freshman in college and quite obsessed with the X-Wing / TIE Fighter PC games - “X-Wing Alliance” has just released. A joined a huge online club called “The Emperor’s Hammer” where members roleplayed as Imperials, but I wasn’t satisfied just running the XWA missions and dogfights with the other members of the club. I proposed that we create a war game similar to Rebellion where an imperial armada was battling a rebel armada and sending fleets to specific locations; and when those fleets met, we would schedule a time to recreate the conflict in Skirmish Mode for XWA, and resolve it as a multiplayer match with live players in as many cockpits as possible (8v8 IIRC). I designed the wargame myself, and I acted as “game master” taking orders from each side daily, resolving the rules, and scheduling the skirmishes. It was one of the most difficult and rewarding things I’ve ever done. We called it “Project Faithful”, and it was a blast and a big success, the empire barely won IIRC. The Emperors Hammer adopted this into a new feature of the club, they called it “Imperial Storm” when they ran similar competitions later. Unfortunately I had to bow out and focus on getting an actual computer science degree so I could go become a real game developer instead of just a hobbyist lol. But part of me would rather still be running those war games, it was so epic to simulate a Star War on that level of detail and “realism” and feel like you’re really part of something huge.

Once a week two guys designated as fleet leaders take their turns in Armada, then a bunch of guys designated as pilots and/or commanders resolve the fights in the other games based on their actions and report the results.

I kinda do a similar thing but with a fantasy rpg. The first level has you controlling entire empires, playing out their political intrigue and conflicts on a month-by-month basis. Then each month gives you five weeks in which to take downtime actions, triggering events that affect settlements (and thus empires). Then you can zoom in on individual moment-to-moment play, where the core of the game resides, and you handle character-level threats/resources/info. Then an extra layer down from that gives you dedicated combat, social, and magic systems, all of which can have ramifications that resonate all the way back up to the first level. For example, I once used my magic weapon to slay a pack of besieging trolls, freeing the village and getting them to join my empire and stealing that trade route from an enemy faction.

I’ve heard of people doing this with Axis and Allies all the way down to skirmishes in Bolt Action. Furthermore, there would be multiple boards of Axis and Allies in separate rooms, and a game moderator would travel between the two “HQs” and inform each side a few things the enemy has done, but only what that team would be able to see or learn from recon/espionage. In other words, they also made a fog of war mechanism by splitting the teams into separate rooms. It was a buddy of mine who said this would be a week-long family event with their uncles and whatnot.

My buddy and I used to do something kind of like this with the old Star Wars Miniatures game (the one that came in booster packs during like 2010). We would play the space combat version of it, with the attacker declaring certain ships to carry certain units/squads, and any that made it to the planetside part of the space map would then airdrop onto the infantry map. It took a lot of time but it was honestly so cool to play and felt so thematic.

We've had rules for this for a few years at my LGS. It has to be run as a campaign. So you have the combats at one or two planets per session. Teams sign up to pay together and some members handle the play at each level. So one will handle the overall strategy for production and movement and deployment in Rebellion, and then a 2nd teammate will play the Armada battles, and a 3rd will play the x-wing dogfights and a 4th will play the Legion fights. And they can all be happening simultaneously :)

So, week 1 would be Rebellion, and the macro game. Week 2 would be Armada and and setting up dog fights in X-Wing Week 3 was Legion. Never before was I happier that we could have multiple games of Armada/X-Wing and Legion played at the same time, cause we would split objectives in Rebellion as well

I'm so HAPPY that someone else has thought of this! I think a way to speed up the process is rather than doing the official rules, you do something like Risk where you roll a 6 sided die and the higher roll wins. Depends on which game you'd wanna do. I also think you can add strategy with Main Characters where if the pilot loses space combat, they have a health penalty on the ground. So if Luke loses, he as 2 less health in Legion
