If you look at watch trends in start up companies in 2017. I.e. Marloe watches. Hand wind Seagull movement with a wonderful display caseback. A thing of beauty with a 50 hour power reserve. Seiko 007. Not very beautiful and NO handwinding. Don't forget handwind watches. Vostok Classic 2017. Handwound with beautiful movement with a display caseback. The handwind watches are overlooked a lot on KZbin imo.
@PerthWAtch6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Neil - yes I do think there is something intangibly special about hand wound mechanical watches. They do get overlooked by many, including myself. Perhaps it's to do with the trappings of a modern world, and even in an area with much history like horology, people tend towards self-winding automatics.

The only point I agree with you on is the craftsmanship and style of mechanical watches. I am thinking about a quality watch but I know I won't wear it every day because it will be precious and I know I would scratch it. If I wear it once or twice a week, every time I put it on it will be run down and I will have to reset time date and day. That's resetting 100 times a year compared to getting a battery once every two years.

Would you agree with me that an automatic watch will keep better time accuracy if the user wears it and is more active such as going walking regularly instead of wearing it and sitting in watching tv.
@PerthWAtch5 жыл бұрын
I don't think there is clear evidence to suggest that... for some watches maybe, for others it doesn't seem to matter what activity you're engaged in. It largely depends on the quality and isochronism of the movement.

I love hearing the "history" card being played for why automatic watches are the bee's knees. Yes, there is a long going back hundreds of years for pocketable time keeping devices but quartz is at the very tippy end of that timeline. If WIS were honest they would admit that they 1) like having something different from the common pleb and 2) like when the movement goes tickclicktickclicktickclicktickclick multiple times per second. From there they can justify a watch being inaccurate because hEriTaGe.
@PerthWAtch4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment - not sure about 1) as you can get a quartz and still have "something different from the common pleb" as you say. 2) is probably true for many. Do check out my complementary video on why wear quartz watches if you haven't already ;)
@mr22guy4 жыл бұрын
I like your channel and support you, but sorry mate, your points here are flawed. 1. History - quartz is part of history as well 2. Craftsmanship - valid opinion 3. Connection - you mean enslavement like Ben Hur rowing the oar ;) 4. Convenience - srsly? quartz is grab n go, but a mech has to be wound or shaken, then set, every freakin time you put it on. Quartz loses about a second a month so no resetting, which is more convenient! And every 2 years I spend 3 minutes swapping the battery - yep, i do it myself (refer back to connection). A mechanical watch loses more time than that! LOL 5. Style - highly subjective and totally dependent on what manufacturers choose to create, not on the movement.
@PerthWAtch4 жыл бұрын
Points are fine as articulated - let me elaborate: 1. Yes quartz is part of history, but so is the Apple Watch. We are talking 50 years vs. hundreds of years. Mechanical wins ;) 2. Tick 3. Yes... it's a tick then. 4. Yes seriously. You spend 3 minutes, for others it's a trip to someone who might rip you off, and who might be out of the way. Quartz is of course more accurate and will keep running as long as has battery, so it's a different type of grab and go convenience. You really need to see my complementary video on why wear quartz watches. 5. Highly subjective... but objective fact is that nobody hand decorates a quartz movement, nor would they put a hand painted or cloisonne enamel dial on a quartz watch. The watches considered most beautiful by most people are mechanical.

I think the point Woon is making is that if you have numerous watches in your collection you won’t wear the same watch all the time. 5 reasons to wear a solar watch: unbox it and it starts telling time right away, no wait!, use any light to keep it ticking, wear it for decades without removing the back and replacing the seal, it's quartz accurate not like mechanical watches which have poor accuracy, never needs an expensive service which auto mech watches need every 5 years min, look better due to thinner case designs, sorry I wasn't keeping count on the number of reasons but if you want to invest in a museum piece then buy an automatic (yes I've had quite a few) but if you want a wrist watch you can wear every day and forget about being on your wrist only when you want to tell the time then buy a solar.
@PerthWAtch3 жыл бұрын
A lot of half truths there mate - have you had one for “decades”? People had unboxed a solar to find its flat and definitely doesn’t tell time right away. Mechanical servicing is a marketing gimmick - I’ve not had to service any of mine - that includes a Rolex that’s over 30 years old, never opened, works perfect. I’ve not seen a solar that looks better than my best mechanicals, etc etc.

My analogy. Automatic vs Manual Transmission Automatic transmissions have surpassed Manuals in efficiency and practicality. But there's something about manual transmissions that make you feel much more connected and in control of the automobile you're driving. Also, I favor Automatics for their designs and build quality. With automatics, you're usually going to get a much nicer case, dial, bracelet, and hands than a Quartz. But I still like my G-Shock and Phoibos Quartz watches because they are low maintenance and do not have to worry about setting the time once every two weeks.

*One downside mechanic (automatic) vs quartz is accuracy need adjustments monthly while quartz doesn't need any adjustments, because adjusting when changing daylight savings time and back. A watch is to give me time, of course accurately. It should be thin and nice and not cost so much. Bottom line, no watch has it all. It depends on taste and/vs practicality. Style on outside does NOT have to do mechanical vs quartz. Quartz watches can be made easily thinner and nicer. Rolex watches are not worth their money. To maintain it after couple of years makes it even less worth.*
@PerthWAtch5 жыл бұрын
*Thank you for expressing your opinion. Regarding accuracy, yes you're right - I described this in detail in my video on quartz watches* : kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4nMoYGkjLyWsMk *A watch is to give time but often also much more, and for some of those other factors mechanical is where it's at.* *A watch does not have to be thin - perhaps you have seen some quartz models like the Mudmaster, deliberately made chunky.* *Not sure why you are saying style does not have to do with mechanical or quartz... it's as if you didn't hear what I said in the video!* *And the last sentiment is purely subjective... here's another view: Rolex watches are easily worth their money, will hold value (whereas almost no quartz does), and can go without servicing for decades (I have one just like that).* Cheers! ;)

Lots of good information and many ironies here. There are many parts of the world where punctuality is not something regarded very highly in every day life. Yet, Swiss are known for their extreme punctuality and yet they are most known for automatic watches which are the least exact in time. 🤷♂️ It’s kind of funny to be in a rush to get a train and to be wondering exactly what time it is and not to look at your several thousand dollar automatic watch but to reach for your expensive smart phone to find the exact time! 😂

Thank you for the reply my friend. I like your question. In my simple mind, an automatic that is out of energy is sleeping because it can be brought back to life with a quick shake. However, a quartz that is out of energy is dead until it is resuscitated (given a new battery). Please know that I love quartz watches also. I think a good collection should have both. Quartz provides the carefree accuracy that you may desire like I do, but Automatics provide that quirky + and - accuracy that requires loving attention. Hi there! Interesting question - I assume you are referring to watches that hack (where the second hand stops). As far as I know it shouldn't be a problem but seeing as you're going to stop using the watch for some time why not just let it run down? I think that is more advisable as it dissipates the tension in the mainspring. BTW I do not pull the crown out on Quartz watch - my understanding is that this doesn't actually stop battery usage.

your point on convenience really doesn't make sense to me, saying that quartz watches take longer to start up. Yes, if your battery is dead changing it is more difficult than getting a mechanical watch going, but all it takes for a mechanical watch to stop is generally a few days of not wearing or touching it, quartz watches generally go years between batteries. So yes, there is once instance when it's more convenient to have a mechanical, but only if you take good care of it and if that's basically the only watch you wear. It's hardly 'convenient' to have to wind your watch every day, or in the case of automatics wear it every day.
@PerthWAtch4 жыл бұрын
If you rotate watches as many people do, I end up thinking about the fact the my quartz pieces are using up their battery everyday, and after some time it is going to need to be changed. For mechanical pieces you can leave them for however long you wish (years even), then when you come back to it you start it up again and away you go, no loss at all. Not sure what you mean about "only if you take good care of it" - do you think you don't have to take care of quartz? As for "if that's basically the only watch you wear", well no actually, quite the opposite. The convenience comes especially if you have multiple pieces. Say you got 10 automatic watches - rotating periodically through them there is no problem leaving the other 9 resting wound down. With 10 quartz pieces, you got 9 others eating battery every single moment and not being used.
@captaintarel4 жыл бұрын
@@PerthWAtch yes but every time you rotate to a mechanical watch you have to reset the watch to the correct time if it's run down, that's where I find quartz to work better since if I leave my watch for days or weeks, I can be fairly certain that it's still running and still keeping good time. My current everyday watch has been going solidly for 5 years without a battery change. This may be an outlier, but I'd still expect batteries to last 2-3 years. Yeah you may have 9 other watches using battery power that's being wasted (and admittedly, I wouldn't keep that many watches running constantly, probably only 4 or 5) but even at my lower end, that's a battery change once every two months, versus time setting every time I change a watch if I had 10 mechanical.
@PerthWAtch4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have a different view on the process of setting a mechanical watch, but many find the "ritual" part of routine of owning such watches and can actually be rather cathartic. The reverse for quartz is indeed also a convenience in that you can pick it up and not have to worry about having to set the time. It's true that having to change the battery would be a less frequent occurrence even when owning 10 quartz watches, but that process is certainly not the equivalent of having to set a mechanical watch - almost everyone I know cannot do it themselves, whilst anyone can start up a mechanical.

I agree with all your points and appreciate your video. Fortunately, my Hamilton Boulton Quartz White Dial Men's Watch (tank-style) seems to capture the best of both worlds. It has the elegant, old-school dressy look, superb craftsmanship, and great accuracy. It certainly has the history you speak of, the 1st version appearing in the 1940s or 50s. While you're correct that accuracy is not the main reason for purchasing a mechanical watch, I still think it's an important issue, a matter of degree. I have a problem with a watch that loses or gains 20 seconds a day. 10 seconds daily is just acceptable. For a 500 plus dollar watch, say, I'd expect it to be off by 5 seconds or less. My Orient Star Elegant Classic (of the rose-gold variety) more than satisfies on this score, losing about 2 or 3 seconds daily, which is phenomenal.
@PerthWAtch3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Fair points but prepared to be disappointed if you’re expectation is for that level of accuracy at $500 point. Your Orient had a great result but the next one you buy may well be much worse than that - it just comes with the territory!

Only the fifth point about design and finishing or case beauty speaks to me. I'd love a well finished quartz watch. But the Swiss purposefully sabotage quartz watches. Even Longines and Omega high end quartz are in cases intentionally inferior to the quartz counterparts. They want you to pay more for their automatics. Omega doesn't use the best ETA quartz calibers. Again, part of their plan to dodge any real investment in what would be a superior yet cheaper luxury watch. As well as much easier and again, cheaper, to maintain. Maybe the culprit is Swatch.
@PerthWAtch5 жыл бұрын
I think there is very real truth behind what you describe... although not just the Swiss I would say. Other European countries seem to have the same trend, and Seiko also do see to market their mechanical pieces to a different audience. As to whether quartz is "superior", that is highly debatable, with issues of what constitutes luxury coming into play, as it is clearly not predominantly about accuracy and ease of maintenance.
@mr22guy4 жыл бұрын
Make a parody of this video where you make the same arguments for quartz: 1. History - quartz made mechanical watches history 2. craftsmanship - rocks can tell time if we cut them a certain way 3. connection - the way of the future is batteries. Wear one on you. 4. convenience - they don't make an abacus watch do they? 5. style - most fashion watches are quartz.

I've only recently moved over to an automatic watch (Orient Ray II -- a price effective start!) and realized there's an additional reason for automatics -- they're rather environmentally friendly! No batteries for replacement. Not sure about the miniscule amounts of oils needed at infrequent service intervals and how that compares to, say, an Eco-Drive but they definitely boost one's "green cred".

@PerthWAtch3 жыл бұрын
Fair points - it can be inherited and passed on if it's well made. If it's a shonky Chinese movement, be happy if you get a few years before it disintegrates :)

Playing the Devil's advocate here Ivan but I am often amused by people who agree with your premise but don't own a watch with even a display back eg. Rolex owners. They claim to enjoy the craftsmanship, the beating heart, et al, but never get to really see what they have paid for. I have 5 skeleton and 2 open-heart watches so at least I can admire while wearing. Display backs are decidedly second-best. Obviously the watch needs to be removed to enjoy the the view. The interdependence between owner and mechanical (manual wind) is best noted by the routine ritual of winding the watch. A most satisfying daily event made all the inviting if one can actually see the gears move.

Thanks Brian - always good to hear from you! I guess of the 5 points I picked out, only *Craftsmanship* requires movement visibility to be fully appreciated... with the other factors not being diminished by the movement being hidden. Don't get me wrong though, I do LOVE to be able to see the movement for sure, some are just so beautiful... but I guess even if it's hidden, I still derive plenty out of an automatic or mechanical piece :)

MECHNAIC WATCHES ARE NOT FOR POOR PEOPLE. 1ST. THY NEED MAINTENACE, AND ITS NOT CHEAP. 2ND WHEN THEY NEED REPAIR, REPAIRS AN BE VERY EXPENSIVE. WITH THE MONEY OF A REPAIR YOU CAN BUY A NEW WATHC QUARTZ. SO, MECHNICS ARE NOT FOR POOR PEOPLE.
@PerthWAtch6 жыл бұрын
Fair thoughts there - I am interested in what you mean by "poor"? There are reputable mechanical watches starting at $50 these days, yes more expensive than quartz but quite affordable. Maintenance is debatable, as I have had many watches run for more than 10 years with zero maintenance... contrast that with quartz which you will have to replace battery every few years. Also the issue with repair goes the same for quartz does it not? They can be expensive and if a cheap quartz needs a repair... well you would just buy a new one. Good points for discussion! Cheers, Ivan.

But mechanical watches have a beating heart, like living being. Quartz watches are quiet, cold and silent, like a Terminator :)
@PerthWAtch5 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Thanks for expressing your view BassVentura. I will try to explain part of the perspective from the bunch of us you consider "silly". Yes a heart needs an electrical conducting system to function properly... however a heart is a physical pump, transferring energy to the blood and driving it forward to flow around the body. An escapement "beats" with perceptible movement (not so a quartz crystal) and transfers energy from the mainspring to the gears, driving the watch. A mechanical watch must work this way, whereas a digital quartz can achieve timekeeping display with no perceptible movement of parts. No analogy is perfect of course, and deep enough analysis will make it fall apart, but this is part of why many feel mechanical watches are more alive/organic/have soul as compared to quartz.
