You should seriously think about getting some or even just 1 reptile. I started with a corn snake 3 nearly 4 years ago...now i've got 6 snakes (hognose, coastal carpet python, a ball python, a reticulated python, a yellow anaconda and (my original) cornsnake...aswell as a blue tongue skink, 2 crested geckos and a bearded dragon. I can honestly say i dont think i could have got through the last few years (even pre covid) without them.

It is, but you do need to be careful with it because it can be toxic if mishandled or combined with other products (chemical reactions because they have so many compounds in it now). I prefer the products that are closer to the original dawn before they added so many additional things to it (they are no longer able to claim it is safe for use on animals btw, there were some university published recommendations to minimise its use with animals a few years ago other than in emergencies). I pretty much would only use blue dawn for animals with motor grease at this point because the dawn is not near as bad as the oil. 7th generation dish soap for the rest of the old dawn uses is what I do now. It isn't as strong, but dawn is just too strong for most uses at this point.

That egg cleaning thing, it's cool that you tested and found this to work. Paving the way with the scientific method :) The same issue with yolk/whites getting on other eggs is also a killer of chicken eggs. I lost a bunch of them as a kid because one broke and I didn't know that I had to sand paper off (traditional fix for bird eggs) the grease. Modern soap makes sense as long as you work quickly and keep the temperature stable (and egg position in a reptile). Nice to know this works. If I breed birds again I'll have to see if this works for them as well.

Another great video guys, this is why I still use the old school 120qt cooler to hatch my eggs. I just build a little PVC pipe frame at the bottom and lay light diffuser over it so it suspends the egg boxes over the water. Then I use 2 150 watt submersible fish tank heaters hooked up to a thermostat, 2 submersible water jets to move the water around for better heat dispersion and 2 thermometer/hydrometers, one inside the middle egg box and one outside of the egg boxes so I can get the overall temps and humidity. Then inside the egg boxes I use really wet perlite and easy hatch trays. This method has worked extremely well I never get bad eggs or desiccated eggs. The only issue I've been having lately is I hatch out 90% female Ball Pythons, it's very strange, don't know if it's coincidence or temps but I don't want to alter my temps at all because I've been having so much success. I incubate at 89.5 degrees at 99% humidity, if anyone has had a similar experience I would love to hear it. The only downside to this method of incubating is you can only fit 8 clutches at a time so I have to run multiple cooers at once, it's not that big a deal I built racks on casters that hold them just fine.
@ultimatewitcherfan6677 Жыл бұрын
Great video! Very educational not only for experienced reptile and bird breeders, but also for those who are interested in breeding reptiles and birds themselves. It’s very important that you use warm, soapy water to wash goo off of eggs. NEVER use water that’s too hot or too cold because that could kill the eggs too. The reason is water that’s too cold will solidify the goo, making it harder to clean off and could freeze the eggs while water that’s too hot could cook the eggs. Also, any eggs that have gone bad must be removed immediately to prevent the death of the entire clutch because bacteria in the bad eggs will spread to the viable eggs and ultimately kill them. I’ve been thinking about breeding my chameleons and this video will help me know what to watch out for.

@@NewEnglandReptile I would imagine the outside hole specifics would vary based on climate as well. I'm in the desert so I assume that if 2 holes are the min (and it usually is, just like puncturing a can of evaporated milk), I'll just need to refill the outer water container a lot. Someone in a humid spot might actually even need to have bigger holes to keep it from getting too humid potentially, but this double layer system is great, cuts down the variation between geographic location more

My incubator got messed up during a thunderstorm. We lost power and the thermostat got messed up. The eggs incubated 6deg lower than they should have. The eggs went full term and never hatched but didn't die. After 90days I realized it. The temp on the incubator said it was right but the temp at the eggs wasn't. I adjusted the temp and 3 weeks later I had 10 healthy painted agamas hatch. They're now 2wks old and eating machines. Had I checked earlier they would have hatched on time.
