Picked up my first safety razor and did my first shave with it today. Went with the Rockwell 6C in gunmetal after watching a bunch of your videos. I was a bit nervous at first but dove in. I started at 1 and instantly knew I needed more so skipped 2 and jumped straight to 3. No nicks or razor burn and got an amazing shave and probably the best shave I’ve done for my self / most enjoyable morning shave experience. Can’t wait to try some other razors and might jump to plate #4 here soon.

After almost 50 years of using cartridge razors, i bought a Henson AL 13 a month ago. It takes a bit longer to shave, but without any of the accessories you use, I'm already getting a better shave than I ever have. Im adding stuff as I can afford it. The alum bar and Thayer's Witch Hazel got here today. Your vids have been a major help in this new endeavor. Thank you!

I started wet shaving with a DE razor in January of this year, moving on from Gillette cartridges. My first razor was Henson AL13++, which I later gave to my 21 year old son when I ordered a second Henson, the AL13+. I also purchased a Karve CB in solid brass with solid bar plates A to D, making it an adjustable razor similar to the Rockwell 6C/S. The machine shop where I work is only a few blocks away from Chris’ shop, so I was able to purchase my Karve in person and have a great chat with Chris. The CB is a great system as you can get plates that range in blade gap from AA to G in both solid bar and open comb, 16 different options. But with all that, the Henson makes it easier to find the correct shaving angle and get started on the DE shaving experience. Once you’ve got a good technique, the CB allows you to tailor your shave experience to different amounts of growth, different blades, etc. Both are great razors.

I started off with my father's Gillette 1960 fatboy. Next I bought the Merkur Futur. I found it a little too aggressive, it works but you have to be careful. Then I bought a Rockwell T2 in gunmetal finish. Love that razor! I generally operate around 4 1/2. Loved it so much that I put the futur back in its box and buried in a drawer. So impressed with the T2 that I picked up the stainless steel as my everyday from here to eternity razor. I also use the Simpson T3 synthetic brush. Too many unresolved issues with China and the badger trade. Got to find a holder that will handle that big Simpson!

I got the twig a couple of weeks ago and have been loving it. Mild yet efficient. I’ve got really coarse hair and shave every 2-3 days and it takes it down quite nicely. Chasing BBS shaves particularly on my neck lead to irritation regardless of what razor I seem to use. I settle for BBS on the face and DFS on the neck. Another informative video though. Been using a Gillete Fusion forever and never really thought much about a safety razor. I recently did a ton of youtube research and bought a RW T2. I also bought peronna blades, a Simpson synthetic brush and the Rockwell shave cream. (proabably after watching all your videos :) ). SO, today was the day, my first shave with the new safety razor. I'm 54yo, three days of growth, sensitive skin, and I failed. 4 bloody holes and a face on fire. Bro, tell me it will get better. I was all exited for my new endeavor and I got slapped down today. I will give it more tries for sure. any additional advice before I buy a Henson....HA

Thanks for your review. (I saw another one by yourself, too). I wish I saw them before, but it"s ok. I bought myself the Henson. I read their instructions and advice - on FB, on the box and the email they sent me after delivery - very simple and to the point. No cuts the first day, a tiny-weeny one the following morning, but that's my learning process. Yes, it's a close shave. I managed to do a good job on my chin (which has a dimple), but I wish my neck felt smoother. I'm tempted to compare with the Leaf Twig.

David….I agree with you totally about Rockwell razors. I started out with a 1965 Gillette Slim….ok but I wanted more. After a lot of research and watching KZbin vids…I pulled the trigger on a 6C. I just loved the shave I get with that razor…with any blade…and I end up with no irritation and a BBS shave. After that…I had to go to the 6S when I found a great buy on one. Same shave as the 6C…but the SS adds a little more prestige to the razor. My last one has been my T2…and that’s a great razor also. The mechanical operation of the T2 is flawless….feels like a precision tool when using the TTO and gap adjustability ring. The T2 SS would be the ultimate….but at $250…I can’t justify it. My T2 is working great for now. Question for you….the T2 at $250 is close to the Rex Ambassador at $295. Which one of these do you like more…..for comfortable BBS shaves, ease of use, and quality of construction?

Some great choices and advice. A beginner can't go wrong with the Rockwell 6C because it's 6 razors in one for only $60 or less. One of my newest safety razors is the RazoRock Game Changer .68. It's all stainless steel and priced at $55. Maybe you'll get to try one in a future review.

@@OhioShaves I never thought I'd find a DE razor that would compete with my 6S. The Game Changer is made in Canada too. RazoRock makes high-quality and affordable safety razors. While the RR GC has impressed me, it won't replace the 6S. But it will definitely be in my rotation. It's smoother and more efficient than the 34C too. IMHO of course.

Lovely video, David. Thanks to your candid advise, I migrated to Rockwell 6c about 3 months ago, and its been wow!😊 It's R3 paired with a Gillette Nacet is my sweetest spot for head and face shaves and daily driver. I recently got a Parker 78R because I really admired it's looks so much, and you gave it quite a good review in one of your previous videos. It's really a very efficient razor and surprisingly aggressive if not gently used. I wrote to Parker and asked for the blade gap and they said it was .64mm (yet to hear from them about the blade exposure), so it compares to the R4 and R5 Rockwell plates. Being relatively new to wet shaving, I am enjoying these two razors presently, and want to bump up my collection with some high ends like Rex envoy, Karve overlander, etc. Thank you David for the great work on wet shaving. Cheers

I don’t shave often. I actually prefer to have a beard, so electric trimmer to shorten my beard is usually my go to. That being said, there are rare occasions where I do need a razor to touch up or slightly reshape my beard a little. Your videos are the best. The sound and closeups are great. I'm one of those guys that almost never has to shave. On one hand, that is a blessing, but on the other hand, when I DO have to shave, its very tempting to grab a cheap disposable and just scrape away during my morning shower. I don't have enough facial hair to warrant the process of lathering, etc., (I kind of wish I did, because I like processes and gadgets) So, I tend to just use the basic cheap razors, Amazon Basics, ShaveLogic, Harry's, etc. I don't have to replace them that often at all, so its not a HUGE $ investment, but honestly, they don't shave that close at all, even when pitted against my Dollar Store "beard." Do you think it would be worth the investment to try a DE or Twig? I figure, less irritation, less blade replacement cost, and possibly less irritation cant be a bad thing.

Another excellent video. Admittedly, I shave daily in the shower and I use a bar of soap -- don't cringe. It does ok. When I have more time, I use shaving cream but I use the "cheap stuff". Questions: do you really get a better another shave with a better cream? do you have a go-to cheap shaving cream and if so, what is it? Assuming I want a budget friendly knot, bowl, and proper shaving cream, what do you recommend? I'll end on a good note by saying I do use Nivea.

All of the artisan soaps are inexpensive. When you consider how long they last a 4 ounce puck should last you two years at least. When it comes to budget friendly, not shaving bowl I recommend the razor company brand knots. For the money I don't think there's a finer brush out there and they also have inexpensive shaving bowls as well. Check out their website. I used to spend $20 bucks for crappy shaves and I also have some bits of above my lip that are now gone because of the 5 razor bladed nightmare and I thought I was getting a better shave!!! I bought a Van Der Hagen razor when I first started out, not the best razor because of the blades, and the safety razor wasn't exactly sturdy, but IT WAS MUCH BETTER than those 5 bladed plastic craps! As my technique got better, I decided to buy a semi-slant Parker safety razor and I haven't looked back since. It is beside the point, but I find lathering a big hurdle as a beginner. Normally, I cannot get a good shave after a hot bath, it is too drying. Neither after just lathering, it takes too much time preparing the face and the soap kind of dries on the face. I can get a better shave if I prepare a wet lather, but it is messy. If I simply wash my face, pat dry and lather 10 minutes later, it makes for a surprising difference. Shaving is surprisingly tricky sometimes.

@@OhioShaves well, I stopped regularly shaving 5 years ago, just went to trimming the beard. When I recently returned to shaving, I started getting this nasty irritation from my disposable razors. I tried an electric shaver, same thing. Then I noticed a bombardment of adds from Hansen shaver’s, which I found obnoxious, but was intrigued to try a “old fashioned “ like my father used razor. Your video gave me an alternative to the Hansen, so I tried the Twig. Works well, no razor irritation at all, satisfied.
