My cat was lean and diagnosed with diabetes... Lack of exercise and dry food is a major factor in diabetes...

Stomatitis is another common one that can get bad fast, my cat got it and we didnt know it was serious it went untreated for a little until he wouldnt eat and constantly drooled,couldnt bathe etc. We searched everything because we didnt have money for expensive vet bills. We tried mixing lysine powder for animals into his food but it hardly worked.That mixed with his fused spinal cord and bad kidneys we just decided to put him down, if anyones cat has symptoms of drooling, sticking out its tounge and constant chewing on nothing then go to the vet !!

It was a brave thing to do Sydney! Cats with stomatitis really suffer and it really affects their quality of life. You made the right decision! My cat also had stomatitis due to his underlying FIV, he now has no teeth :p But I appreciate not everyone can spend 1k+ on a dental!!

Then what do we do, when spending $1300 is not NOT an option. I'M on disability. HER -Lucy- pain is so intense. What next? I have her on hemp oil x 2 daily. Soft enzymatic tooth paste. Thick high cal malt paste for hungry stimulant- to gain weight. And a tiny pill x 4 daily called BestLife4Pets oral health-She is 13. She is suffering. It, the severity, came on quite quickly, as others have mentioned. I simply can not do the teeth extraction. 📝I have to decide to pay electric bill and feed 4 other also to buy food and my own meds. If one snotty person writes that I can't afford cats or that I should give them up, that will communicate not MY cheapness but your ignorance towards relationships between humans and cats. Please be pro thinking befor you post- M. Illinois. 🐱 M

Where I live in Canada they have a clinic for cats with hyperthyroidism that treats them with nuclear medicine. It’s really cool and works :). The vet I work for often refers to them for patients we see with hyperthyroidism, it’s nice when clients opt to do this for their cats. :)
@laurab5976 жыл бұрын
I think my cat has Hyperthyroidism because we feed her like 4 times a day full sackets and she never puts any weight on. When I see the vets he says she is a normal weight and fine but without the amount of food she eats is that a sign something is wrong? We have had her 2 years and her weight has always remained the same (skinny)

People kill me when they complain about taking their pet to the vet..having a pet means you have the funds to give them all the care and proper things to ensure they live the most fulfilling and happiest lives. Recently, I spent over $400 just find find it my girl was stress without needing foster kittens and didn’t like her food. I am happy to spend that money because atleast I can rule out that she healthy and well, And I would do it again and again just to make sure my baby is well.

My cat is in kidney failure....she’s on fluids 3x a week. She has regular lab work. She has the prescription food, which she usually refuses. She’s far enough along that the vet is sort of feed her what she wants. She’s lived for several years with the kidney disease and only needed to start on fluids recently...but dang, she’s so skinny. She has thyroid stuff too but she can’t take the meds anymore due to the kidneys. Sigh. I know it’s just a matter of time. I’m grateful whenever she cusses my daughter out during the fluids (daughter works for a vet) because it means she still has her crabby spunk. This end stage stuff is the hard part of having a pet 😢.

What is the typical cost for lab work for a cat? We have 3 and have only done labs as needed instead of as preventative due to the cost, but would love to start doing this annually. Thanks for sharing the information!
@vetnextdoor7766 жыл бұрын
In the UK, a typical CBC and biochemistry would put you just over £100. But I have a feeling it's more in the US, maybe approximately $150-200? It's always worth ringing your local practice and getting a quote from the receptionist! :)
@crazycatlady19886 жыл бұрын
Where I take my cat it's about $160 for a senior panel, but for younger cats it's a bit cheaper. Depending on where you live you might be able to find a low cost clinic.

I really hope you can answer my question... we had to euthanize our 13 year old about a month ago as he had a mast cell tumour in his digestive tract and like you say, symptoms were not shown until he was suffering too greatly. I expected mast cell tumour to be on this list as everything I have read has labelled it one of the most common silent killers, I was just wondering how often you see cases of internal mast cell tumors? Also, I get the recommendation of regular blood work but sometimes things dont show up... Eko had blood work done in October and nothing showed irregular except his kidney disease (that was already diagnosed). It was only 3 months later we had to put him to sleep because of the tumor 😞

Do you have any advice for dogs with Heart disease?
@vetnextdoor7766 жыл бұрын
Hi Mickey! It really depends on what kind of heart disease your dog has and what stage it is at. There is little evidence at the moment that starting medication when they're at the very first stages is preventative, but some vets like to start them early anyway just in case!
@MaddyRose2226 жыл бұрын
Thank you, yes it isn't very serious right now, he does have a slightly enlarged heart and a small murmur, the only symptom he has is coughing so I'm going to try this medication thats natural and it helps strengthen his heart and I've seen a lot of people have good success with it. If that doesn't work of course I will spend whatever money he needs to get better.

What food would you recommend for a 2 year old cat with dental issues
@vetnextdoor7766 жыл бұрын
Hello Marie! Depending on the types of dental disease, it would really be best to sort the teeth out rather than using food as a treatment, if you can afford it. However Hill's and Royal Canin both do a dental diet, the one for Hill's is called t/d and the Royal Canin one is just called the dental formula. Their aim is to reduce tartar build up but again, probably best to have a dental if it's really bad! Hope that helped!

I actually like cats more than dogs because there just much more smarter and they're so cute and dogs to just jumping on you and and scratching you and some dogs can hurt you that's why I like cats better and when I write all these comments about kidney failure from somebody that just broke my heart I love cats

Seriously! Many people are struggling to pay rent and buy food! With the cost of living it’s getting harder for everyone! The least we can do is get all pets fixed at a low cost neuter/spay clinic and try to feed our pets the best food possible. Me and my husband have paid $1000 or more at the Vet a few times for our cats to get treatment and it was a struggle! I understand the Veterinarian can’t work for free but I was calling around to get a cat fixed many were charging $350 and up! Not many people can afford to pay that! I was lucky to find a place to fix my cat for $102!
