At my Clinic, the toughest thing i ever saw was this cat that had to be euthanized due to cancer. The owners who had the cat for its entire life (14 years) didnt want to be present during the euthanasia. I felt horrible for the cat because it was literally the nicest, most affectionate cat you can imagine. So i decided to be present with him while he took his last breath. As i was sitting with him and the doctor started administering the euthasol the cat kept frantically looking around for his owners who werent there - It was the first time in over 2 years i actually cried at work. RIP Paulie

Omg this is so sad! Couldn't the owner be convinced to stay? What a selfish thing to do to abandon one's pet in its most difficult and final time! Sorry if i sound judgemental, but i feel the owners should know what they are causing. I'm tearing up at the mere thought of my cat dying alone and scared because I'm not there comforting him :(

my cat is 19 years old, I'm about to turn 24 so she's been there almost all my life, and I've got a 9 year old dog that I love more than life. And I've promised to be there because of the reason you mention - I don't want my beloved pets to end their lives wondering where their 'mum' is.

It can be scary for them, but part of practicing good medicine is also respecting the clients wishes if they cannot be in the room. They are not purposefully trying to be selfish, so good on you for making that furry friend as comfortable as they could be before they go.

C sections are one of my least favorite operations. because of huge stress of making sure 9 puppies are breathing and healthy. And 99% of our c sections are bulldogs. If the dog can't breed by itself I don't think it necessary to further breed it. However they are also one of my favorite procedures because the fact you're bringing new life's into the world. AND GIRL THE DRAMA. A CLINIC FULL OF WOMEN CAN BE RIDICULOUS SOMETIMES. But the worst thing I've ever experienced at the clinic was we had a dog paralyzed due to neurological problem. Well we did hydro therapey on him for months. He started to walk and run again. His owners ended up abandoning him at our clinic. And my co-worker took him. Sadly one morning before work. He had a neurological attack of some sort. And passed away immediately. She was a wreck and so we're we. Being in veterinary medicine is hard. But if you can't be empathetic and if euthanasia doesn't bother you to a degree then you shouldn't be in the profession. Point blank

Amber A hi, I’m studying for my GCSEs at the moment(I’m also in the uk) and I was wondering if you could let me know what courses and what I need to do at college to be a veterinary nurse, (basically the whole education with it). Thank you so much ☺️

Juicy Lucy hi ☺️ so there are a couple of routes! Obviously the first one is university, I think for that you need Biology at A level. Or you could do a college course in Animal Care or something similar. The way I got into the job was I simply started doing work experience at a practice near me. After a while they then decided to hire me as a student. They are paying for my training and I attend college once a week. It’s a lot of work but I can qualify within 2 years. I didn’t do any scientific A-levels. So it just goes to show that there’s always a way into the profession. I’d suggest emailing some local practices near you and asking for some guidance/ work experience. A couple of nurses I work with actually started training at 16/17. I didn’t get into the profession until I was 22. Good luck!

Yes Fear Free!! It makes such a difference! I'm next on the list in my clinic to pay for me to become Fear Free Certified but we are all trained to do things Fear Free! There is one doctor who is not fully committed to Fear Free and you can see the difference in the patients that regular see this doctor vs. the doctor pushing to become a full Fear Free clinic! I'm so glad to hear someone else pushing for Fear Free :)

I absolutely love your videos, even the tough ones. I wanted to be a vet, wanted to tackle that job, I even went to vet clubs and gained so much knowledge. However, I couldn't do it. My heart breaks for animals way too much, and I gain connections so quickly and it was just too painful. I respect vet workers so very much. You guys really put so much into your work and are held on a pedestal in my eyes. The story about the basset hound tore me up too. Losing a pet so unexpectedly is so very hard, and I know it has to hurt when you have watched that animal grow as well. Great video, great answers, and thanks for all that you do. ❤

Hey Victoria! Just came across your channel. I’m a tech at an ER&Specialty clinic. This was a great video! It can be very hard to keep a level head in this field. We are often faced with heartbreaking cases, unruly clients, and everything in between. At the end of the day we are the voices for these animals, and I love every second of it! I would say (septic) pyometras are my least favorite procedures. When something so easily preventable becomes life threatening it just upsets me!

As a LVT for 20+ yrs you have hit on everything on why I had to quit. Props to you for being a light on all the things that need to start changing in this field. After 15 yrs in trauma and critical care it became too difficult. My state is terrible to educated staff there is no license required and doctor's prefer to keep it that way so staff are cheap, ignorant of facts and ethics and easy to control. Thanks for all your videos and keeping the public educated!

Hi! I just found your videos. Love them! I'm currently in school to be a vet nurse. Total career change for me, but I'm truly very excited. I've always wanted to work with animals, but never thought I could handle losing them and the stress of it. About two years ago, my husband and I lost our four month old kitten in a very traumatic and extreme experience. She was gone pretty much instantly and it was horrible. It took me a while to come to terms with it, but through that experience I realized that I wanted to pursue this career path, because ultimately I believe that every single animal that is helped is honoring every loved and lost pet. Working to help these animals and see the bond that is created with their humans seems so rewarding. Thanks for making me feel more comfortable about going into a new field.

I recently passed my boards, and currently working at an Emergency Hospital and do volunteer work with a rescue that specializes in my favorite breed pit bulls. You brought up the toughest thing as a professional. I found myself with the ASPCA at a house that had broken up a fight ring. That was definitely the hardest day, we had to crate, catalog any issues 12 fully grown unfixed male pits. Then 3 pregnant females. Sadly all 12 males were deemed too dangerous. And one female was so sick she didn't even make it to the hospital. However silver lining the 2 remaining have birth to healthy pups and all found furever homes. So yeah that is why I do it

Love this! You seem very empathetic and educated. Exactly the kind of tech I would wanting working with me! If I could change something about veterinary medicine I would change the $$ aspect. I find in NZ so much of what we do (or more specifically DON'T do) is because of financial constraints of the owner/ the expense of veterinary treatments, and it is really demoralizing. It means we have many a difficult conversation with owners about what we would like to do and what we can actually do with the budget they have. It means that the patients miss out on the best care. Also on the $$ aspect - I want the payrate for veterinary staff to change - nurse and techs get barely above minimum wage in NZ despite having a certificate, diploma or degree (depending on where they trained). I think that is why there is so many nurses and techs that leave the industry early on. I agree that all veterinary staff should also be educated. The clients have more faith in someone that knows what they are talking about, and it is safer for the pets to be managed by someone who has had training. I know alot of things can be learned with experience - but I feel that 'on the job' learning is superficial - you don't learn the anatomy/ physiology/ pharmacology behind what you are doing as there generally isn't the time. I hope I don't offend anyone by saying that - but I think veterinary medicine is changing for the better in NZ with vet nurses requiring to become registered, and best practice accreditation only being given to clinics with a fully qualified veterinary staff.

I volunteer at a clinic currently and am looking towards becoming a vet technician, the first day I went in to work, the was already a euthanasia to a very sick cat with a tumor in her throat. What hurts me most is seeing the owners and families who really cared about their animal when we have no other choice but to perform a euthanasia. :(

I'm recently certified as a vet assistant and I honestly hope that when I decide to leave my current animal kennel job and actually work in a veterinary clinic, that I have coworkers like you. I also see the good in everyone and the drama between veterinary staff is UNBELIEVABLE . when I was training as a student I literally witnessed so much drama which was frustrating because I was there to learn and I was so nice to everyone and at first I didn't think anyone hated anyone there. but as soon as someone left the room the staff would start drama about them . I feel like having a positive veterinary staff is literally so essential for emotional survival in this field because its already hard enough !:[ we need each other to lift us up

Hey girl! I did a voluntary internship at a vet clinic in February and after that decided I wanted to study veterinary medicine, I got my acceptance letter for my top choice university last week so I’m super pumped to start studying! Thanks for making this video, it was super helpful and I saw a lot of the points you made during my internship. Especially the fear free thing is something I want to learn really badly. We had this one cat that was seemingly super aggressive all the time and would pee everywhere so they always had 4 people basically putting their whole bodyweight on the cat and I felt sooo bad for it. Then one time, me and this other girl got the cat out of her crate because she pulled her iv thing and the girl wanted to give her a new one for her fluids. (I’m from Germany, so not familiar with the English terms, I’m sorry hahah) anyway, we had the cat on the table and she looked really nervous at first so I just gave her some pets and scratches while the other girl set everything up & we waited for help to handle this supposedly dangerous cat. But as I was talking to her and petting her, she became comfortable and suddenly started purring, so the other girl told me to just keep petting her but had everyone else in ready position in case she did get aggressive again. But nope, needle went in, kitty didn’t even flinch, just closed her eyes and kept purring while we all gave her some cuddles. A lot of our pets go through so much unnecessarily rough handling and anxiety during vet visits & I hope I’ll be able to do better than some of what I’ve seen in my internship.

Unfortunately, you're going to have drama anywhere you work. It's kinda just human nature, especially when you have a group of people that spend long hours very close together. I recently turned down a job offer at a clinic after I learned that every week they open up four hour where anyone can come in for a convenience euthanasia. I learned that I would be required to assistant in all of them. I am 100% not okay with convenience euthanasia, especially when it is that common. Any given week, that clinic put down over 20 pets. When I turned the job down, the vet asked why and once I told him, I was berated by him for a solid 15 minutes. Since then, I found a lovely clinic that shares my views and does not participate in convenience euthanasia. That's where I'm doing my externship.

I am training to be a veterinarian (only 1 year left to go!) and this is going to be something I will ask about in job interviews/ make clear I will not be involved in. A previous boss of mine (I was a qualified veterinary nurse before going to vet school) gave me a great piece of advice - make sure when you go for jobs that you know what your values are and what you will and won't do. Make it clear from the very start - like I will not euthanise a healthy pet, I will always give pain relief regardless of whether an owner can afford it/ declines it (which is actually law here anyway (in a first aid setting) and I am sure is the case in most countries, but I still have been in practices where their bitch speys don't go home with pain relief, only injectable on the day of the procedure).

I believe euthanasia should only be used for animals that are severely injured or very sick and euthanasia is the only humane thing to do. I am still just a vet tech student. But I've already decided. I absolutely refuse to participate euthanasia on a healthy animal for any reason. I believe in this so strongly that I am willing to lose my job over it.
@b.w.5828

"Convenience" euthanasia is a concept I've always struggled with as well. I've been lucky thus far to not have to be involved in one directly, but after speaking at length with one veterinarian I've worked with about it, it has shifted my perspective a little bit. I was curious about her thoughts on it, as a vet who had been in practice for several decades. She says she started out with much the same views on it as all of you. Absolutely not, no way. She would get a call from someone asking to euthanize a physically healthy animal for one reason or another, and firmly turn them away. She finally had one phone call that really made her think. A gentleman called asking if she would euthanize his farm dog, because it had snapped at him once. She turned him down, saying she wouldn't do it, and his response right before hanging up was "Alright. Guess I'll go get the rat poison then." The kind of people willing to euthanize their perfectly healthy pets are not the kind of people overly concerned with the welfare of that animal. At least they opted to do it the humane way. At least they looked towards the kindest method first. All of a sudden, she felt sick to her stomach about that dog, and all the ones she had turned away, wondering if she condemned them to a worse fate than one needle poke and then falling asleep. These people are determined to be rid of their animals, and they don't care if the animal dies in the process. If turned away from the only humane option, will they instead poison that animal? Shoot them, toss them out of a moving car, abandon them to starve? At least with being brought to the clinic, she had control over their final minutes. She could ensure that they left this life as peacefully as possible. I think she has an important point. I would love to see more effort into offering to take the animal and find a rescue, bring it to a shelter, call well-known clients that may be looking for a new pet. They want to be rid of the animal, help them with the proper resources to find a better home for them. I'm sure most people would rather be rid of the animal AND not have to pay for the euthanasia. In those few cases where another placement cannot be found for the animal, or those few sick freaks who don't just want the animal gone, they WANT it dead (i.e. the "it nipped/scratched my child and it WILL die for it", or the twisted "I don't want them anymore, but I don't want anyone else to have them either" types), then they will find a way to kill the animal on their own. Again, if denied the one and only humane option, they will find other, less humane ones. I can see the same justification for it that I see in open admission shelters. They take in more animals, knowing that there is no space and healthy animals will be euthanized for it, because those who are turned away are at risk of much worse fates. Do all you can to avoid it, but sometimes it is the lessor of two evils for that particular animal. All that said, having a set time when anyone can come in and have an animal euthanized, no questions asked, no alternatives discussed, is absolutely outside of that realm. And euthanizing 20 per week would be far beyond what I could emotionally handle or justify. I'm lucky enough to live in an area where there may be 3-4 requested per YEAR. It's not something that ever will nor should sit well, but a blanket "never, for any reason" isn't necessarily helping the animal.

I feel like most of your answers are on point, but I would like to add that complications can absolutely happen during anesthesia. Anything from hypotension, blood loss, and worst case scenario cardiac arrest have happened. It all depends on the health status of the patient, and how stable or critical they are prior to the procedure.

Question about fear free. I try to be fear free and encourage chemical restraint. I feel like fear free practices are geared towards general practice and use of treats, toys, smells, etc. I work in emergency. What are free fear things I can do? Many patients I see have undergone trauma or has some GI issue and I can't use treats because they may have to be anesthetized or have pancreatitis. Sometimes, chemical restraint is limited due to the patient's disease process such as congestive heart failure. How can I be more fear free things into an emergency setting? The cats and dogs have separate waiting areas and use basket muzzles instead of nylon so they can still pant and/or vomit. We do also use the feliway.

Livestock are mostly treated very well. In addition to most farmers genuinely caring about their animals, livestock are their source of income. If they mistreat them, they won't make very much off of them. I live in West Texas, and last year, 2 people literally died in a wildfire trying to get cattle to safety. Raising livestock is a pretty thankless job that takes a lot of hard work and the people that do it don't get rich.

We have a lot of pyometra patients come through our clinic. I think those are probably the conditions I find the hardest to cope with, considering it’s something that can be completely avoided. I once spoke to a gentleman on the phone who was booking an appointment because his dog clearly had a pyo, and out of curiosity I asked why he didn’t have her spayed. His reply was “because I didn’t want her to gain weight”. It took all my willpower not to scream at him down the phone.

Can any one please give me advice for my dog, she has had a decrease in appetite which made her slim, she is always wanting treats and other foods tho, she is always thirsty but pees right after, she had diarrhea for a day but is better now....i give her 1 teaspoon of coconut oil a day and i offer constant and different dog foods to her everyday, this has gone on for a month and she acts fine but besides these problems. My family can not afford vet cost but can not decide to put her down😢😢 please help, no hate

If your dog is constantly hungry and thirsty but expelling it right after it means she's not absorbing anything. This could be fatal because she's not getting any nutrients. There is no solid advice that anyone could give you over the internet. No one could actually determine what's wrong without seeing her and running tests etc. Giving her oil everyday would probably only worsen the diarrhea. If you can't afford to take her to a vet a lot of shelters of state funded animal rescue organizations give free consolidations. There is no way to get your dog the help she needs online. Get an appointment please. If there are no free organizations near you then talk to your local vet about a down-payment plan.

One of my main issues in vet is he money and cost, euthanasia is the "easy" way for people who have no money. Do you deal with this a lot? I would love it to be a requirement for owners to get Pet Insurance. Thoughts? Thanks!

Regarding veterinary questions, if you think the vet's ideals and the tech's ideals should align, should the pet owners also have similar ideals? Also, I've never seen a man work at any of the clinics I've been to. I was considering becoming a vet, but got discouraged when I noticed that. Was it just a coincidence, or are men uncommon in veterinary medicine?

I’ve been in vet med for 5 years & never had a rabies suspect. Thank god. Our clinic has been implementing more fear free methods - however, our COS is taking it a bit far (as in refusing to muzzle pets who are almost unmanageably aggressive - or waiting until they bite someone to recommend sedation) & we have techs who have now been bit 4-5 times working with her. I have been looking into getting certified but I read that you have to pay an annual fee on their website to keep your certification ??? I hate the tough stuff. I push all those situations & interactions to some deep dark place in my mind so I don’t cry all the time.

Ekkkk.... that sucks that your COS allows people to get bit.... Have yall tried using Sileo inhouse???? Sometimes we will use it for patients that are so nervous and have aggressive tendencies - just to take the edge off. A lot of times it does help!

i agree with the three things you want to change about veterinary medicine, esp the fearfree and the drama. like, we're all in the clinic to save animal lives so why do we stress ourselves with hating on/ picking on co-workers? cant we just live in peace? when we let negative vibes enter the clinic it would almost always cause more harm than not - and sad thing is we EVEN focus on it, jeopardizing the health and status of our patient. tsk. this should be changed. good video btw! :)

Not sure if anyone has answered your question. But losing his teeth at five months is perfectly normal! They start growing their adult teeth at around 16 weeks. Their teeth usually fall out around that age completely unnoticed because animals often just swallow them and move on. But not always. He’s okay, just growing :)

what state are you in?? I just found your channel and love it... I am in texas and not from here, originally from denver. And out here it's astonishing and horrific the way the govt/people down here treat cats and dogs . Cats are viewed as vermin. There are no laws regarding tied up animals, cat/dog limits in households, no laws about having an animal in a 120 degree car. It's enough to make me actually need therapy after having lived here for a decade. Wondering if there are any of your views in Northern Texas?? or if this is the norm , down south?? I lived my whole life and don't think I even saw a stray animal let alone packs of dogs and cats walking around dying with broken bones sticking out and having absolutely no place to call to report any of this that will help and do something about this out of control animal population that is suffering so horribly.
