Don’t bring Cinderella into the “whole letting the plot happen to them” scheme. Cinderella was suffering through abuse and just wanted a night off. She just happened to get a rich man out of it too.
@adde95064 жыл бұрын
Aroura is a stretch, too. Yes, the plot does happen to her, but she doesn't have any opportunity to do anything about it. She's just having a particularly great Tuesday when her backstory is dropped on her and she's whisked off to a castle where she's promptly dropped into a coma. It's just her good luck that the boy she met and liked also happened to be the hero of the movie. I'd actually argue that she isn't even really a main character. She's framed as the female protagonist, but that role is actually filled by the fairies.

Tecnically they don't need to be human. They do need to be a person, but can't be an animal. For example; Tinkerbell used to be a Disney Princess (until Disney removed her title so she could be part of the Disney fairies brand because for some reason you can't be part of two brands) and she's a fairy. Humans, fairies, and mermaids can all qualify.

@coolspider2954 жыл бұрын
Correction, Native Americans not Native Indians. Native Indians would refer to people Native to India. Also, the British did end up doing a one-sided genocide against Native Americans, forcing descendants of survivors into poverty for generations.The oppression of Native Americans by colonial institutions has not stopped either, considering the Truth And Reconciliation council report on residential schools and the Millenial Scoop. Pocahontas is a very problematic movie when viewed from a historical, or even modern political context. It is up there with the song of the south, except the song of the south didn't glorify a genocide.
@maranathachristie90204 жыл бұрын
And also very historically inaccurate
@coolspider2954 жыл бұрын
Superspiceandnothingnice I don't see how aiding in a genocide, particularly one larger in scale and with longer lasting effects than the Holocaust, is heroic. In reality, Native Americans were slaughtered and many are still living in poverty due to colonial violence. An RCMP commissioner admitted that systematic racism against Indigenous people exists in Canadian police forces. Some estimates predict that there will be no status Indians left in Canada by the end of the century. You are praising the extinction of a race. Even the "Song of the South" IS politically correct compared to Pocohontas as advocating of segregation is better than advocating an extinction of an entire race.
@nathenewendzel18254 жыл бұрын
Mulan is not historically accurate either. (Though it's unclear if the legion she's based off is true or fiction.). These movies weren't made to be historically accurate. They were made to be stories based on the the original stories to deliver a powerful message. Let's learn the important lessons from both the historic events and legions and these stories. I bet the real Pocahontas who's real name was Maoka and English name was Rebecca would be pleased to learn that she inspired a wonderful story with a positive message. (I myself have a little Native American blood in me. Though not that tribe.).
@nathenewendzel18254 жыл бұрын
Real Story: Pocahontas who's real name was Maoka was about 10 when the events took place. John Smith was much older. It's possible that it was all staged without Smith's knowing it was an act (though it's unclear if it truly was). When she was older, she was kidnapped and married John Rolf. Her father didn't lay down punishment because she was happy with her new husband. She took on the name Rebecca for her English name and converted to Christianity and tried to convince others from her tribe to convert. She traveled to England once and she died young there.

She's also a good role model because she judges people by their personality, not their appearance. She's also very kind and caring. No, it just says that Disney is pretty inconsistent when it comes to applying their criteria. Ariel is not human, which means she doesn't meet one criteria, but she brings money, so she's good enough, while, let's say, Kida, meets all criteria, except the unspoken one, the money, so she's left out, even though both of them are equally amazing characters.

Mulan took her fathers place in the Army, she had her opportunity to save her country. In Esmeraldas story she has no war to join, only the battle of/for justice and humanity within her city.

I think Tinkerbell deserves her place back. She has her own films, being the protagonist, she wasn't introduced in a sequel, and she has performed multiple acts of heroism. I'm editing this comment to include one of the replies that got lost between the others. Please read it before replying: as xAaeiynx said: We're just arguing semantics and subjectivity because while you may not feel she's a leading character, others feel that she is. Tinkerbell very much fits the official rules. She is a leading character (gender is irrelevant), she has way more screen time than dearest Aurora to which Flora, Fauna and Merryweather were more of a leading role than Aurora was. Correct, Tinkerbell is not royal, just like Mulan but both perform heroic acts. I believe Tinkerbell helped Peter Pan to fend off Hook. Correct, Tinkerbell is not Human than again, neither is Ariel, ARIEL!!!!! The unspoken rules are irrelevant because Tinkerbell fits the official rules, and let's face it, she WAS a part of the line-up and was REMOVED! I, also, question what makes an animal sidekick? Snow White and Aurora were good with animals but they weren't as prevalent as Cinderella's, Ariel's, Jasmine's, etc. Belle didn't really have an animal sidekick. Are we really counting her horse Philip as an animal sidekick? Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, etc., were more sidekick than Philip was. She is a good/caring/hard working/compassionate person, that's another subjective standpoint.(I must add that being nice is not a requirement. with the time Aurora appears on screen we just assume she is nice, but she could have the exact same personality as Tinkerbell, we really don't know, just saying) Please, stop replying with the same things that have already been discussed, and reply to this statements instead so we can progress our debate. Thanks for your time!

Ariel is half human and turns full human at the end of the movie. so she counts
@jacks.62437 жыл бұрын
She's not half human though. Her parents weren't a huan and a fish, they were two merpeople. Within the mythology of the movie and the real world, that would make her a seperate species. And I think she only looks human at the end of the movie. She can still talk to fish and stuff. And Triton/Ursula probably reshaped her tail into legs rather than changing her species at DNA level. :P
@A-Dino-Named-Mennany6 жыл бұрын
Jack S I think what they meant is that she looks half human. Like she's got the same outside body structure as a human. Also I think Disney mean that they have to look human as well. We have no idea how Ariel was changed, so I just assume it's so that the face is human so that they can be all beautified without it looking weird because it's on an animal.

I think there’s an unwritten part to the last of the qualifications for being a Disney princess, the “Perform a significant act of heroism” one. I think really what’s meant by it is “Perform a significant act of heroism for your country.” The thing about Mulan isn’t just that she’s a hero, it’s that she’s CHINA’s hero, making her a significant enough person to China that she has the same significance to the country as a princess would.
@quinncotnoir63898 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, there is a Disney Princess that practicality no one has heard of. Princess Eilonwy, from the Black Cauldren. Human? Check. Primary role in an animated Disney movie ? Check. Does not primarily star in a sequel? Check. Born royal ? Check. Act of Heroism? If you count saving the hero along with herself, and sticking up for herself and others, while still being hilarious and sarcastic, then check. The only problem? Box Office success.

A lot of disney princesses are unfortunately not very good role models. As much as I love most of them (I grew up with disney), as I've gotten older, I see that they aren't good role models. 1) I know that most of the earlier ones weren't in an Era when feminism was a largely promoted idea, but still, I think that they could definitely be better. (Although, as someone else pointed out in a different comment, Cinderella kind of fixed that with her 3rd movie) 2) Body shape, weight, looks, etc. Another thing that Disney is not accurate with. Especially in our society, where we're told how we are supposed to look, based on things that cannot and will not happen. Personally, there are times where I'm very selfconsious about my body, and everybody has had that at least once. So that's not really a good basis of feminine looks. (But thank goodness they're working on it)

Wait, I call bs on the Giselle explanation now that Disney is making live action remakes. We have a live action Cinderella and a Belle. Not to mention a 16 year old Aurora. Well, I forget if the animated version is also 16 or not but that's my freaking point! They are not up for interpretation in the real world anymore! If they can still have a live action counterpart while different people portray as them in the parks, why not Giselle? I see you snubbing Giselle, Disney.
@A-Dino-Named-Mennany6 жыл бұрын
I still think they could have other people portray Giselle in the parks, but I don't think you can compare them. They were Disney princesses LONG before the live action movies came out. Also they're not the same movies. They're different versions of the stories. Also if they're far too iconic now. And if they were removed, then loads of people would lose their jobs. I know you're saying that this means that Giselle should be added, not that the others should be removed, but Giselle was introduced as Amy Adams. If she was in a completely animated movie and they made a live action movie later, then it would be unfair. But because her first movie appearance had her be live action for the most part, she wasn't counted. Again, I think it would be awesome if Giselle became a Disney princess, and they could portray her with different people. But you can't compare her to the other characters who had live action remakes, since they became Disney princesses before the remakes, and their original movies were completely animated. Sorry for the long comment.
@missmagic65056 жыл бұрын
Because they were animated movies first then became live-action. Enchanted (the movie Giselle stars in) is both animated and live-action.

The live-action remakes are just Disney's interpretation of their own movies, like the princesses at the parks, but they are in a story version.

Cinderella was animated 64 years before the live aciton version came out. Giselle was animated ten minutes before the live action stuff started. It's not the same thing at all. But Giselle literally doesn't DO anything animated. They purposefully gave her no personality. Whereas if you try to argue that Belle had no personality in the first movie, then you're a fool.

Merci. I think Aurora's film is the weakest of them. That film wasn't bad, in fact I enjoyed it. It was more about the fairies than about her anyway, and seen from that lens, it's a solid film. Even then, it pales in comparison to Tangled, Cinderella, TLM, TLK, and a number of others. Aurora doesn't do anything particularly heroic, and mostly does inconsequential things when she's grown and awake. Also, Sleeping Beauty wasn't a smash hit at all, unlike the others I mentioned. If they disregarded the human rule and put Nala in her place, I think it would totally be justified.

Ariel was born into royalty and she became human in the movie, so she legitimately counts as a Disney princess.
@TheNotverysocial4 жыл бұрын
@@junkistrash8633 I'll concede that. Everything else I said stands. Sleeping Beauty is the one film of the lot that failed hard and took multiple rereleases to break even, yet somehow counts. The others all succeeded, mostly spectacularly upon their first run, so how come this one film slips through the cracks on that? Mulan is another, a great film, but they kind of bent the rules with the heroism thing seemingly specifically for this character. The rest all are actual royalty. Just goes to show you how silly the entire brand actually is.
@emmaswan46739 жыл бұрын
I don't get why they have to be royal to qualify anyway. Doesn't that kinda tell kids that you can't be successful unless you marry a royal or already royal? I mean there is the exception of acts of heroism but the majority of Disney princess are connected to royalty.

The definition of prince and princess literally is royalty. There are royal figures in real life, so it doesn't make sense to encourage children to become royalty anyways. It's far better to encourage children to be heroic and brave and kind, which is what all these Disney "princesses" were really about.

+Chayenne Oosterveld At the time of creation though, that was (more or less) what was expected of women. To work in the home, cook and be happy with their place. To be dependent on man to provide for them (so in a way the Stepmother from Cinderella would be progressive for managing her household for so long without a husband). As the feminine role changed, so too did Disney's characters. True we don't particularly hold those three as role models now, but back then they were. If nothing else, the history of Disney Princess movies is an interesting study in the anthology of gender roles and women in society.

My 3 picks to be added to the roster would be 1. Kida: My top pick because she fits the Disney qualifications best and would add much needed diversity to the line. Also, now that there is a non singing princess (Merida) and a queen (Elsa) in the ranks, she fits right in. 2.Meg and Esmeralda:They both occupy similar roles Jasmine did in Aladdin: independent female, who eventually helps/ends up with the male protagonist. The only difference between them is that Jasmine is royal and they aren't. I think they both deserve spots based on their acts of heroism. Also would add some cultural diversity (always very important) I'd love Eionwy on the list as well, but I think most people group her with the younger Disney characters like Alice and Peter Pan (even though she's 14: the same age as Snow White)

Just let you know Pocahontas was in her young teens. They made her looked older in the movies and younger than 14. I pretty sure she was 11 or maybe 12 at the time when they invaded the land. She had a son too, and I think she died of smallpox. I think Elsa is already Disney Princess when he made the video. He said Elsa and Ana have the title.

@Faereni9 жыл бұрын
StrategicGamesEtc Mind you this is JUST my thoughts, I have no way of really knowing, but Eilonwy's case may be do to legal rights. Most of the classic princesses are from fairly well known fairy tales and stories (Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson for example). Eilonwy however isn't from material that is so widespread it'd be considered practically free use. Eilonwy belongs to Lloyd Alexander. It's very possible he could have just limited the rights to the animation and no further? Which is a shame, I would have loved the entirety of the Prydain Chronicles to have been made into film. ***** I totally agree about Esmeralda and was pretty surprised they didn't have her on their list! Girl was almost burned at the stake for helping her people! At least they mentioned Kida and Meg!

First of all, I think the title should be changed from "Disney Princess" to "Disney Heroine". I was never into princesses as a child and looking on the phenomena now as a grown woman, I think Disney should send the message that anyone can do good things. You shouldn't have to rely on a royal title for people to respect you as a person. As for who should be on the list, I have to say Esmeralda from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". She's one of the most selfless, brave souls in all of the Disney universe. She's strong, independent, compassionate, and, since Disney seems so concerned with being diverse nowadays, she's an ethnic minority, a Roma (Gypsy). She was my favorite female Disney character as a kid and to this day, she's the first person to come to mind when I think of a "Disney Princess".

+asmRTPOP Correct, and this proves that what we're talking about here is all about merchandise instead of reality. In reality, Anna and Elsa are in fact Disney princesses--just ask the people who actually created them as such, who are NOT the same people who slap (often arbitrarily and in contradiction with reality) various franchise labels on these characters. We should believe whatever we want, not what some marketing executive at Disney Consumer Products says.
@rbrtck8 жыл бұрын
+Will N Oh, please! Disney Princess(TM) is a merchandise franchise managed by Disney Consumer Products--it's all about selling as much merchandise as possible, and that is a real-world fact, not a figment of anyone's imagination. Either you made up all of that nonsense, or some of it was told to you by Disney Consumer Products--in that case, they're trying to sell you something, and they'd say anything in order to do it, so don't believe their BS. Now let's dismantle your numbered points one by one: 1) Match or surpass Beauty and the Beast? Since when was this movie--probably the most acclaimed in Disney's history--the minimum standard? Your logic is fatally flawed right from the start. 2) Sleeping Beauty lost money on its initial theatrical release, and The Princess and the Frog's box office performance was considered very disappointing--so much so that they started giving their princess movies titles like "Tangled" and "Frozen" in an attempt to disguise what they were (and the rest of their advertising tried to, as well). Yet Aurora and Tiana are both included in the merchandise franchise. Tiana was undoubtedly included because of her race, as Disney Consumer Products want to sell to every market segment--it's just like Mulan, even though Mulan was never and never became a princess at all. They don't care about anything but selling merchandise--that's their only job! 3) Hero act? Mulan was a heroine for sure, but it doesn't make her a princess. The fact that she is Asian, however, makes her useful for a certain market segment, as well as to make the franchise more diverse so that people won't complain. That's just good marketing--makes them look good, which is good for selling things. It has nothing to do with some higher kind of ideal you're touting. That's not what the people in charge get paid for--they get paid for selling merchandise to make more money for Disney. And there is *nothing* wrong with that--I just like to recognize things for what they really are. Now, as for the Disney princesses in Frozen, they have their own Frozen(TM) merchandise franchise that is just as big as the Disney Princess(TM) franchise--that's why they haven't been folded into the other franchise, at least just yet. Having a whole other incredibly successful franchise is generally better overall for sales than piling everything into one--if you can do it, that is, and out of all of Disney's animated features, Frozen did. If this were not the case, then both Anna and Elsa would have been added to the Disney Princess(TM) franchise sometime in 2014, as originally planned, with those silly coronations and everything (yes, it was already in the works, but then Frozen got huge and Disney Consumer Products saw an opportunity to create a whole new franchise, so they canceled all of the plans).

But the movie was About Hercules, not her, despite her appearance in the story. Jasmine is the only non-central character, and she's there because they needed a new princess (in a sexy outfit!) to sell toys; and despite Aladdin being the central character, nobody wants to self-identify as a homeless thief, lol. Princesses aren't based on box office bank, nor the theme parks - they're based on merch sales.

I think it's weird that they have the Sequels rule, because Mulan, Cinderella, Pocahontus & Belle all STARRED exclusively in sequels, some in multiple. Beauty & the Beast actually had like, 3 off-shoots, Pocahontus had a direct sequel (Pocahontus 2 Journey to a New World), Mulan had a direct sequel, (Mulan 2), and Cinderella had 2 direct sequels, even if one of them was a AU theory type film. Now, all of these sequels were TERRIBLE (like most Disney sequels), and I know most people barely know they exist, let alone acknowledge them, but they still technically exist, AND thus shouldn't these princesses lose their spots on the list by that standard? Also KIDA FTW. Atlantis was great, and she was a FANTASTIC character and represented so many Disney firsts. Such a crying shame. She is my favorite Disney Princess.
@MaripositaNessa9 жыл бұрын
I think what they mean is they can't star in the sequel only. The official princesses also star in the main film which qualifies them as official. Ariel's daughter, for example, only stars in the Little Mermaid sequel and isn't considered an official princess because of that.
@00sasukelovagirl009 жыл бұрын
+Rachel Bohland See, your thinking of the rule wrong. Its not that they cant have a sequel, it's any princess that is exclusive to a sequel, such as ariel's daughter, simbas daughter, the three princesses from mulan 2, would all not qualify because they are exclusive to those sequels. Although Kiara was pretty awesome. She's the perfect example of don't ever give up no matter how much you fail.
