It's a great time to be a Sony APS-C shooter. From having a pretty weak lens selection a couple years until now where we have almost an over abundance of fantastic lenses. Just a couple years ago, your only wide angle option was the Sony 10-18. now we have a whole plethora of fast, wide, primes and zooms. Not to mention the standard zoom selection. Sigma 18-50/2.8, Sony 16-55/2.8. Tamron 17-70/2.8 and the Sony 18-135. All top notch lenses! Good times!

My a6700 just arrived. I am now uncovering all its capabilities. Gonna take a while to learn everything, but one thing for sure, it takes great pictures. I threw on my 10-20mm f4 lens and hunted around town for something worth photographing. Found a torn-up advert flag, grabbed a photo and did some peeking. Man, it did not disappoint. Both camera and lens produced a remarkably sharp image. It rivals my A7R3. Now on to figuring out all those video settings. BTW, while talking about cameras to a nice person at Best Buy, looking at their great display of cameras, I suggested to him that I bring in my Nikon F2A (made in 1979) and display it with all these new high-tech wonders. That would be fun watching people, with a question mark in their head) gazed at it.

Hi, thanks for this video :). Two recommendations for folks who want the smallest lenses with good quality, especially for traveling photographers/videographers: I recommend the sigma 30mm f1.4 at only $279. It is MUCH MUCH MUCH LIGHTER and shorter than the 16mm Sigma lens. I bought both then returned the 16mm when I saw how much smaller the 30mm was. 2. I can't recommend highly enough, again for those who prize portability, light weight, high quality, and small: the sony 18-135mm lens. It is tiny compared to some of these other lenses listed, and has a massive usable zoom range. I love the 70-350mm lens-have used it for years. My travel bag for international travel has 2 must lenses, the 18-135mm sony, and the 70-350mm sony. For night work and videography with a tiny gimbal I add the sigma 30mm f1.4. I hate carrying gear!

Don't know if I would classify it as a "best" lens for APS-C but I really enjoy using my Tamron full frame 70-300 variable zoom on my a6500 . I get some amazingly clear handheld shots from it.I am impressed every time with how sharp it is zoomed all the way out to 300 ( plus CIZ.). I bought it, on impulse ( a sale price!) , for my a7c but find I almost exclusively keep it on the a6500 for the reach. I have been using my crop sensor cameras more lately - just so easy to carry around with the smaller lenses.

Is just not as sharp with the Sony for the price that is sold, if it was cheaper I think people will include it as a great option
@chryseass.5143 Жыл бұрын
@@CLVlogs05 Well, there is a $200 difference in favour of the lighter ( but less featured) full frame Tamron lens and the IQ between them is a lot closer than you may realize. I actually didn't intend originally to use with APS-C cameras but am very pleased with the performance on my a6500. It is also a little bit more versatile than a dedicated crop sensor lens would be if you use both systems. I can happily use it on my a7C when I want more reach than Tamron's 28-200 will give me.

Thanks, Mark! Loved your rave review of the Sigma 10-18mm wide angle lens/emount. This is a brand new lens, coming out on Oct 26, 2023 so couldn't be included in this review of yours two months ago. Every photographer should have a wide angle lens in addition to a long zoom lens, because a good wide angle lens, such as the sony 11mm or the sigma 10-18 gives you two things: 1. macro shooting; 2. wide angle :).

I couldn't decide between the Tamron 17-70 and the Sigma 18-50 for my a6600 so I have both for now. I use the Sigma for gimbal work, an incognito travel lens, and believe it or not, I actually found it to be a great vlogging lens with IBIS or some sort of stabilization. It's small and light, so I can just throw it on the Ulanzi MT-46 mini tripod, and the 18 mm focal length actually looks surprisingly great. I like that setup enough to sell my Viltrox 13 1.4. And I use the Tamron for everything else being event photography, decent portraits, tripod video, run-and-gun video, documentation, and well... everything. But if I was forced to choose one zoom lens, then it would be the Tamron because you could do so much more with it than the Sigma due to the extra 20mm of focal length, vibration control, and it's bigger size makes it look more like a "professional" lens than the Sigma to the eyes of non-camera enthusiast clients or potential clients.

First, your videos are without a doubt excellent. This is my favorite photo / video channel. ALWAYS informative. ALWAYS entertaining. I watch regardless of what you are presenting. It will be enjoyable and educational. Your channel will blow-up - please continue to include content in line with the ZVE10 / A6700 (whatever cameras replace them years from now), because you (your channel) will certainly grow and your audience and content will include more “luxury/pro” gear. - - Ok, question. I currently use the ZVE10 purely for video, and a DSLR (Canon 5d3 with great lenses) for photo. Which Sony camera should I consider IF I was to replace both the ZVE10 (video) and the Canon-5d3 (photo)? I’m an enthusiast; in terms of photography, I shoot pretty much a bit of everything (astro, portrait, landscape, architecture (interior, exterior), macro). In terms of video, mostly KZbin (crafts, vlogs, some sports action). I tend to hold onto gear for a while, so I prefer to buy once (good quality), versus compromising and getting replacement gear often. The ZVE10 is great, but it’s not quite a photographers camera (in my opinion). - - Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I traveled the world and shot like 98% of my photos with the Sigma 30 1.4, 1.5% with the 18-105 and rest with the Sigma 16mm 1.4 18-105 for that tele. Also the images coming from it have something special to me, it really has character :) For some reason I don't like the look of the 24mm equivalent, maybe the 16 is also too heavy. I'm very keen on getting the Sigma 23mm for that 35mm look, but I think its too big and heavy. (And pretty much FF price) Tbh, this made me think, if I should just hop on the A7C and get a Zeiss 55 and a 35 Samyang. If i go with the 2.8, its super cheap and small and compact! F2.8 offers like no background separation for me on APSC and I don't really like the look and unfortunately, I shoot a ton of low light That said, the selection for APSC is crazy good now!
@fredriksvard260311 ай бұрын
How you not get background separation? One upside with apsc for me is that it's not as extreme, with ff i find it's tricky to shoot video wider than f4-5.6 because the dof is so shallow.

Great job on the video Mark! Thanks for making it. I have been using a CCTV C-Mount lens adapted on to my a6400 for a couple of years now and I find it to be a portrait monster. It's a Pixco 50mm f1.4. I think I was able to count 13 blades of aperture. It has all metal construction, but it weighs almost nothing. Manual only. I did a project for school a while back where I compared it to the 50 f1.8 from Sony, and the results weren't even close. I sold the plastic fantastic the very next day. I couldn't believe that a $35 lens outperformed a piece of native glass. Gonna compare it to both of the 50 GM soon. I emailed you a link to the amazon page for it recently, but it was a US page, and I'm unsure if you can get the lens in Canada.

From amateur point of view, lens size is more important on compact apsc system, than pixel sharpness at corner. So, most affordable lense for sony apsc is: 1. sony e35f1.8 - compact universal lens for all. 2. sony 16-70f4 - compact affordable zoom ranges, OSS. F4+OSS make it usable in low light. 16mm is very important. 70mmF4 good for portrait. Optical quality may not the best, but good enough. 3. sony e20f2.8 - most compact crazy pancake. Ultimate combo, also universal lens for any scenario except tele.

The Sony 15 f1.4 also has the advantage of being a fair bit more portable. For the longest time I have been using both APSC and FF lenses with my A7R IV, but looking at FF lenses have noticed that Sigma's APSC lenses don't really offer a portability advantage over FF (at least in the Sony ecosystem). Even the ancient Zeiss 25mm f2 has a smaller footprint than the Sigma f16 and that has the added advantage of giving you an additional 35mmish equivlanet crop mode focal length. The OSS is nice but IMHO less of an advantage in a stabilised body given how good the sensor stab in Sony cameras has gotten.

I do not understand why the Sony 18-105mm f4 PZ OSS seems to have fallen out of fashion. People seem to think f4 is too slow but it is only one stop slower than f2.8 and that stop gives big weight savings for the same focal lengths. The 18-105 is such a versatile lens. It adds that power zoom capability for smooth zooming shots, and has a great focal range of equivalent 27-160mm. If I had to have only one lens for Sony APS-C, I would choose the 18-105.

Thank you for video. One question: I got Sigma 16mm f:1.4 and trying to use it as astromovie camera, just leave it on tripod and turn on recording or watching nightsky via USB on laptop in 32000 ISO, any other special setting I should use or HLG3 on 1/50 is good enough for ZV-E10?

Great review but isn’t the sony 70-350mm an APSC format lens? So it’s a true 70-350mm on a apsc camera?

I love how compact and light the Sony 11mm f/1.8 is but mine doesn't seem to focus properly/quickly. Anybody else see the same thing? The Tamron 11-20 and other lenses focus fine on the same camera with the same settings. Even at f/2.8 or f/4 it's focus seems off. Also love the Sony 18-105G lens it's hard to beat as far as versatility goes and the power zoom feature works well when paired with the FX-30.

I would write Sony and ask for it to be looked at - they might cover the cost of repair if it’s a factory defect.

Would you recommend this camera to a stills shooter? I do full time headshots and portraits (75% natural light, 25% Studio) and I want something light and fast, currently shooting FUJI XT5 with the 33 and 56, but thinking of jumping. Budget tight. What lenses would you recommend to rival a 50mm and 85mm equivalent? I never do video. Just stills. My Fuji lenses are the 33 (50 equivalent) and 56 (85mm). Is there a lens that will give a 28 or 35mm FOV?
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis24 күн бұрын
The a6700 is a fantastic stills shooter. The Sigma56mm f1.4 amzn.to/4fvCMff is the best you'll find for 85 full frame equivalent. The Sigma 30 f1.4 amzn.to/3NRin8H is close to that 50, but you could also go with the Yongnuo 33 f1.4 amzn.to/4fvIVZ6 or the Sony 35 f1.8 amzn.to/4huc20y For the 35mm full frame equivalent, Sigma just released the 23mm 1.4 - amzn.to/40ASDFn There are other options of course because E-mount has so many - but those would be my top picks.

Hi Mark! Not sure if you’ve already covered this, but as a new ZV-E10 user, I’ve been researching lenses (mainly for video), and I’ve found out that except for f stops we also have T stops. If I understand correctly, T scale doesn’t just calculate the amount of light passing through the lens but also takes into account any losses that occur until the light reaches the sensor. So an f1.8 lens is equivalent to T2.2. Do actual photographers and videographers really care about this distinction? Should I focus on “Cine lenses” instead of just… lenses? I’ve noticed that Meike has two categories and all Cine lenses have T stops instead of f and in general their more expensive.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Жыл бұрын
T-stop is the measurement of light through the lens all the way to the sensor. It gives the most accurate reading which is important to videographers in high level productions. An F-stop is just measurement of the size of the opening on a photo lens. So it's more of a theoretical value. But the truth is that most of us are better off with regular f-stop lenses that have autofocus. Cine lenses are cine lenses for a few reasons - but almost none of them have autofocus. Stick to f-stop photo lenses with autofocus until you are working on projects that require t-stops and manual cine lenses.

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thank you! Really appreciate this no-nonsense advice.
@Herbridge Жыл бұрын
I noticed T values from DxOMark lens tests and each lens has its own T value on specific camera
@antonyroussel Жыл бұрын
Sounds right! The T factor depends on the actual manufacturing of each lense. Depending on manufacturing details some lenses have less or more light loss until the light coming through the opticals actually hits the sensor. However, since lenses are not manufactured completely differently, I suspect that differences are small. @@Herbridge

Hello Mark. One additional question, if I have the Tamron 18-300 mm. Which combo would be better to purchase Sony 11 mm 1.8 together with Sigma 18-50 mm 2.8 or to purchase the Tamron 11-20 mm 2.8. To use it with the Sony 6700 and thinking in traveling and hybrid use? Thanks

Hi mark! I notice you don't mention the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 zoom lens. In this video and in another video with a similar theme, on your channel. Why this choice? Is the Tamron 17-70mm lens a better choice for my Sony FX30 camera? This Tamron lens is cheaper than the aforementioned Sigma lens, but does it lose in optical quality compared to the Sigma lens?
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Жыл бұрын
that sigma 24-70 is full frame. they have a 18-50 apsc which I mentioned in here.
@filipedeoliveira5196 Жыл бұрын
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Oh yes. I forgot to introduce you to my context: I'm going to buy a Sony FX30, but in the near future I intend to have a full frame camera (maybe the Sony A7IV). So I'm in doubt whether I should buy a full frame lens (Sigma 24-70mm f2.8) or buy an APSC lens (Tamron 17-70mm f2.8) to save some money and invest in other equipment. Do you think the economy is viable? Will I lose a lot of quality by opting for Tamron's APSC lens? I want to save money, but without denying the optical quality of my work.

Hi Mark. Great reviews and guides. I am currently in Japan and shopping for new Sony lenses (at great discounts). Your lists helps a lot! I did encounter an awesome price on a Sony Telephoto lens that is not on your list. Can you share an opinion on it if I put the model here? I am not sure if you will be able to respond before I leave Japan later this week. Thanks in advanced.

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis, I will keep it simple this time. The lens is the SONY SEL18200 E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS. It is similarly spec'd to the ones you have listed from Sigma and others. Reviews seem to say it is of flimsy construction. Let me know your thoughts.

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis During this trip to Japan, my long time Nikon SLR started to malfunction. So I jumped onto a Sony ZV-E10 and started a sudden splurge on lens(es). With your help, I already grabbed a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 on your recommendations. I am about to add the Sigma 16mm f1.4 just to take advantage of the Japan sales but have already spent a lot. I felt that it may be redundant with my Sigma 18-50 and my cam also has the stock Sony 16-50mm f3.5. If my ultimate goal is to attempt some astral photography, I may hold off on the Sigma 16mm and get some sort of 11mm (any thoughts on astral photo on the 16mm?). My other hope was to find an affordable telephoto; thus my main question earlier. But I was hoping for something in an f2.8. Maybe the the f4 and f3.5 you listed will be enough? I will do a lot of video with this cam too and may want the telephoto f2.8 for darker shoots. I currently also like the Sony PZ 18-105mm f4. Sorry for the long reply and thanks for helping out with my Japan shopping spree. Money IS an object so budget tips are helpful.

Another newbiew lens question... I need a wide (or super wide) angle lens for shooting a pool table from a very short distance. I'm looking at lenses like the Sony 11mm and I wanted to understand the difference between a wide angle (let's say under 16mm) and a fish-eye lense. Is a 9mm, 10mm, 11m or 12mm wide lens necessarily a fish-eye lens? How can I be sure that my new lens would be "normal" (not a fish-eye)?
