So I’ve been doing a perennial rye overseed for the last three years and was thinking of adding Kentucky blue grass. I see you have a mixture. I like the idea that the Kentucky can spread to balding spots whereas rye does not. Can you comment. Then I’ll get your mix but want to make sure first. Thank you.
@ryanknorrlawncare6 ай бұрын
@@lisaaustin3046 It's not a very easy process to overseed bluegrass into another grass type because it's so slow to get going and establish. So you would have to thin out the lawn a lot and even then rye is pretty aggressive to tiller so it will get thick again quickly.

Thank you Ryan. I’ll stick to rye. Both my neighbor and I love it.

I'm in the suburbs of Illinois. I already mowed my lawn about 8 times already and was the greenest in the area. I get complements about my lawn & how green it gets so early in spring. All of the lawns were still yellow while mine was green and mowed several of times. It's all about maintaining your lawn. I never worry about soil tests and fertilizing really early in spring. Mine is alway the greenest in early spring and I am very proud about it.

@adamc17065 ай бұрын
As long as it was watered in and applied evenly at the right rate you’ll be good! Some people do quarterly split apps for a little bit more coverage but either way should work! You’ll find some pre emergents AI are more effective for different types of weeds.

I had my sod installed late fall 2023. I haven't cut my grass yet as it was almost winter. Now, this year what kind of fertilizer should I use early spring? Should I go with Scotts Step 1 (28-0-7) or Scotts Turf Builder Starter Fertilizer (24-25-4)?
@ryanknorrlawncare5 ай бұрын
I would probably do the starter for this first app so you cover your bases with all the macronutrients. If possible before that you could do a soil test to see exactly what is low but otherwise, one app of starter is fine to begin. I have the test kits on my website. 👍

Can you add a slow release fertilizer such as Andersons 24-0-11 with your pre emergent application?
@ryanknorrlawncare5 ай бұрын
If you would like. I usually don't like fertilizing as early as the pre emergent needs to go down so it doesn't push too much top growth when spring flush really hits and it's growing like crazy anyway

I'd aggressively dethatch it and physically remove as much moss as possible and then get proper shade grass growing as fast as you can (fine fescue is usually used and I have a shade mix on my site) but you'll have to get more light and more drainage to the lawn long term of the moss is likely to come back.
