Very solid top 5 list. I love those books as well. The Long Walk blew my mind when I first read it. I do have Salem’s Lot in my top 5; best vampire novel I have ever read. Oh, King is my favorite author; been reading his work since I was about 9 or 10.

I haven't read any King in over a decade and about 9 months ago I read 11/22/63 and it blew me away. Since then I've read Revival and Duma Key, both I also really liked.

A solid list. There are simply too many fantastic books by Stephen King that it was difficult to narrow down my personal top five (these are not ones I would recommend to a person looking to get into King, but just my favorites). 5. The Dark Half / Needful Things (I cheated). 4. It. 3. Christine. 2. Pet Semetary. 1. The Tommyknockers (unpopular, I know, but something about it just resonated with me).

My first Stephen King book I read was the Wastelands. I didn't realize it was the 3rd book in the Dark Tower series. I was like 13yo. Loved the book, and still one of my favorites of all time. Cover art is really good too. It was the reason I grabbed it at the used book store.

Some views about description from Stephen King's On Writing: pg 172 (ch 6): "...(I find wardrobe inventory particularly irritating; if I want to read descriptions of clothes, I can always get a J. Crew catalogue). "I think locale and texture are much more important to the reader's sense of actually being in the story than any physical description of the players. Nor do I think that physical description should be a shortcut to character. So spare me, if you please, the hero's sharply intelligent blue eyes and outthrust determined chin; likewise the heroine's arrogant cheekbones." "For me, good description usually consists of a few well-chosen details that will stand for everything else. In most cases, these details will be the first ones that come to mind."

The Long Walk: You said 1 boy per state. It did seem like that. There were 51 states in this alternate reality but there were 100 boys. Garraty was the only boy from Maine so that gives you the feeling there was 1 boy per state. One boy per state is actually a cool idea which would be more like the Hunger Games. Each state would have someone to cheer for. We know that Baker was from Louisiana, Barkovitch was from D.C. (probably the 51st state), McVries was from NJ, Collie Parker was from Illinois, Scramm was from Arizona, but then you had brothers Joe and Mike from New Mexico. The way boys were picked is that most males ages 13-18 applied but only 1 in 50 passed the physical and mental tests (which included an essay), then 200 were picked from a random lottery, 100 walkers and 100 backups and they could back-out April 15 and 31, and the walk was May 1. So it is possible they'd all be from the same state because it's random and sometimes when you flip a coin, you get heads 100 times in a row.

My first Stephen King book was The Talisman. Not an easy starting off point for a junior high student, but it was still good. My top 4 would be The Stand, It, Salem’s Lot, Pet Semetary…number five is up for grabs.

Great top 5. Very similar to mine. Your 5 are all in my top 10. I would have to include Pet Semetery and maybe Misery. PS instead of Long Walk, while Misery and Green Mile are tied. Just 5 is is hard because I feel like Different Seasons should be in my top 5.

Solid list, not my choices, but you really can't go wrong with a top 5 Stephen King list. Don't believe me? Here's a top five list probably no one would chose ... The Dark Half, Firestarter, The Tommyknockers, Bag of Bones, Dreamcatcher. This is not my top 5, but these are fantastic reads. I'm just saying that if any author had these as a top 5, they would be legends. My top 5: 5. Desperation 4. The Talisman 3. The Long Walk 2. The Stand 1. IT And every short story compilation. He's a great short story writer.

I can’t believe he put “The Stand” as a top five. I new something was off when he rate “The Wind Through The Keyhole,” poorly. His and my taste in literature are polar opposites. “The Stand” was okay at best, in comparison to Stephen Kings other literary monster houses like “IT” or “Wizard and Glass.”
