Thanks again for another great Top 5 Review!!! My partner and I got a CX-30 last year and it is WONDERFUL!! It is smaller but it is just the two of us so the back seat is rarely used. I think of it more like a BMW X2 type of sub compact crossover. It is definitely more sporty than the rest and with this turbo it is really fun to drive. I think the VW seems cool also, but the interior of the Mazda is so much more luxurious! What happened when VW had interiors like that???

I'd agree but for two things. I noticed the older CX-30s are quiet but two 2024 models I recently test drove had rattles in the overhead somewhere. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Also, I am 6'1" tall guy with a thicc booty and the lower part of the seat's bolsters stick me in the thighs bad, no matter how I try to tilt the seat.

You two do such a great job. I've been looking at the Crosstrek for years. And the larger motor has really helped with my decision. I must say of all the subs mentioned I think the CX-30 is easily the nicest looking. Add in sporty and an automatic trans. That complicates things.... Thanks for the awesome content!

Love how the definition of subcompact & compact have changed over the last 15-20 years. Some compacts are now called subcompacts & some mid-sized are now called compacts. I compared everything in this segment back in 2022 & determined for myself that the Mazda CX-30 was easily the #1 best small crossover in its size/price segment. I have had my 2022 CX-30 CE AWD for about one year now, and zero build quality issues or problems to report.

Yes, as European I watch this and I'm wondering, how cars that are 10 inches longer then VW Golf or Toyota Corolla can be called sub-compact. Here sub-compact SUV are usually 160-165 inch long and you can find even smaller crossovers like Toyota Aygo X which is just 145 inch long.

I love the cross Treck but I didn’t get that one because of the limited cargo. I have had the cross track in the past and I’ve had the Honda CRV which I loved. I currently have the Subaru Forrester, which I am enjoying at this time and I really love to drive. I have lots of cargo room in the back. There’s been a couple of times where I’ve had to put the seats down to use the full back space for cargo. Thank you for your reviews. I knew that the cross track was going to be high in your list if only voice to text could spell it correctly.

Once again… accurate compilation. The Subaru doesn’t surprise me. It probably represents the best overall in terms of equipment and price. And it looks fun and adventurous, especially as they still offer a manual (albeit only on the smaller power plant). That’s what I’d choose. Thanks for putting these top five videos together. Great idea.

Crosstrek with 6M, Sport trim, test drove one in a snow storm in Ottawa, impressive with all season tires, if it had been a bit larger with leather seats, it would have been a winner for me. I really loved the Taos when I checked one out. It fits me great even though I'm taller and wider. I got scared off though when I found out that some Taos's have a dying for no reason problem and VW still hasn't figured out what the issue is. Note: It's not all the Taos that die suddenly, but the ones that do, are in the shop having everything replaced, like whole fuel systems, new Control Modules etc and they still die while driving along for no reason.

2021 Seltos owner (picked up in Nov 20)...SX with the turbo and DCT. 43k miles, no repair work at all. Even same tires! Great little car. Highway trips at 80mpg, frequent city driving (DC, Balt, Philly), hilly back country roads - easily handles all. NO CVT. Tried the Crosstrek back then, that busy interior, uncomfy seating (I'm 6ft 1 and 230lbs), and the dead dead dead steering turned me away. I know many don't like the DCT. I love it as it reminds me of my manual driving days a little. It eventually adapts to your driving style, but I get why some don't like it. Neighbor's Taos ('23...) has been sent back to the shop 3X in 8 months. NOPE. It's the same old VW problems. Just wanted to give a longer term report on the Seltos. (edit: the '24s no longer have the DCT...)

Just got a 2024 Highline Taos - the size is unbelievable! I’m just over six feet and I can easily sit behind myself. The sunroof is giant and the drive - I assume they have improved the turbo lag because it’s barely noticeable now. May not be the absolute best value but the drive is fun and it’s not the same as everything else on the road. As my daily commuter - love it.

I bought a 2021 Subaru CrossTrek Outdoor; very happy with it except for the cost of regular maintenance (every 6000 miles or 6 months irrespective of mileage); for my first 2 years I've being doing less than 6000 miles every 6 months. I traded in a 2016 Toyota AWD Rav4. Earlier this year my wife wanted a new car and we were leaning towards a 2023 AWD Toyota Cross (we were trading in a 2015 Corolla sedan), Mazda CX-30, or Nissan Qashqai. We ended up with the Nissan AWD Qashqai; she didn't like the ride of the Corolla Cross (and it would have taken over 12 months to get one!) or the Mazda CX-30 (she found the ride harsh).

I have one and I love it- I have the SEL - it luxurious feeling yet affordable. I hate “suvs” and it just feels like a durable sedan. I do have three kids and I will say that the space for myself is not big enough and will probably get a Tiguan or Subaru ascent w a third row options going forward. The only thing that I’m not loving is the electrics can get glitchy , and the front seat passenger is not electric 🙃 but a manual. Overall great gas mileage, if I had one less child I would feel the space was perfect lol (truck does for a double stroller) overall look is sporty and fun. I have the blue with thick black trim - and I wish that had this color and trim in a Tiguan

The interior just looks so much nicer than what I had been used to. Size is a big factor so I'm glad for this subcompact category of vehicles (condo garage is tight). I would be very interested if Mazda comes out with a hybrid CX-30.

So funny I test drove both of those having driven Mazda 3’s for over 8 years! The CX-30 had LESS space than my 3 hatchback so I went with the Crosstrek. It didn’t take much convincing because I was specifically going for space upgrade adding a new member of the fam. However the interior of mazdas is super cushy and feels quality, and I’ll miss the wheel heating amenity. It’s a matter of preference for lifestyle, do you want something sportier/roadster feeling? Then the Mazda. But the Crosstrek for adventure and space. The all wheel drive for the Crosstrek definitely took the cake, my Mazdas didn’t handle the same. 😊

And coming from the forester I can totally see why you’d pick the cx-30, interior wise they are super comparable

Crosstrek 2.5 Outdoor and Mazda CX-30 2.5T are still the ones to beat for me. One has top notch full-size AWD, the other one is an "MX-5 in subcompact SUV clothing".

Well put! Unfortunately Australia has not and is not getting the bigger 2.5 lt engine. Therefore between the 2, the CX30 in 2.5 takes the cake if driving is paramount.

I like the look of the Seltos, but last year the KIA dealer would only sell me one if I was willing to pay $3500 (USD) over MSRP. That was a deal breaker for me.

scalperships are really ruining the buying experience. Regardless of demand. But be surprised when its a buyers market they still try to scalp you. What goes around comes around, it won't be a sellers market forever.

This is the other suby in our driveway…’18 limited. It is my daily driver…188km highway drive five days a week. I drive no faster than 100kmh…gas is too expensive to drive any faster. Always get 7.0l/100km or less. In warm weather mileage is better. 6.9 on this last tank and we have full on winter here. Great car but I wish they would put in 8 way power seats with lumbar support in the top trim instead of the 6 way seats.

While they are all in the 3000 to 4000 weight class, my #1 pick wasn't even mentioned. The Chevy Trailblazer/Buick Encore GX twins, only in the AWD with the 1.3L. They are the only ones is the small SUV class - unless you also consider the Ford Escape Hybrid - that is 4 wheels down towable behind an RV. Mazda, VW, Kia, Subaru, Honda and others in the class eliminate themselves from consideration. So it really doesn't matter how "good" they are if the Manufacturer doesn't support the activity irrespective if you own and RV now or plan to during the time owning the vehicle. The alternatives of dollly towing or flat trailer towing create other issues.

I just bought a Seltos, though i strongly considered the Crosstrek. Mazda and toyota did not let us test drive due to lack of stock. Boiled down to warranty, dealer location and the fact that I always lose my car in parking lots. Not many Seltos yet but crosstreks everywhere here in Quebec. I have been very happy with my choice and thanks to motormouth for their videos. Helped alot with my research.

@jackyleung9001 hello, I got the turbo top trim last year. I wanted the extra power and the extra comfy seats. Some littlecpetcpeeves include lack of dual climate zones, and lack of power lift gate. Otherwise, I am very happy with my purchase. Having the extra large navigation is not that big a deal since we use android auto for everything most times. My first crossover and cannot imagine going back to something smaller. Its great for 2 plus gear. If you have a bigger family with more stuff, you may want to pay attention to storage space.

As a recent "retiree" we want to downsize a bit, thus the subcompact interest. Like everyone else 95% of our driving is local, but one thing not really covered in your review, is which model is most comfortable over a longer drive? My RAV4 is not very comfortable past a couple of hours, but my (dont laugh) Journey before it was extremely comfortable and the rare 7-8 hour drives were quite bearable. So, any recommendations?
