You seem to be very hard on the springs, bending a spring from both ends causes the knives to lose their snap. Rule of thumb to keep them crisp snappers is to not open both sides part way at the same time. That's why you seem to have trouble opening them when the opposite side is also bending the spring.

The extra layer is only about 2mm so it's hardly a difference. Weirdly on Amazon UK the Pioneer costs more than the Farmer. Just 2 pence more but still, why would I buy a pioneer when I'm getting that saw for free?

The Pioneer is 93 mm long (you said 91) and has 2 layers (you said 3). But I guess you know that :) If you want to show the tools without breaking your nails: open the bottle opener first to the half stop, then the back spring is not under tension and you can easily open the can opener. If you half open the can opener, the cap lifter is very stiff to get out. I like all of these, but I choose Alox over Cellidor almost every single day. Right now I have a Pioneer X in my pocket: a Pioneer + scissors. That's a great option as well.
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 3 жыл бұрын
Hold on...the Pioneer has 2 layers doesn't it? The knife blade and reamer are opposite ends of the first layer, and the second layer has bottle opener & can opener at opposing ends. The Farmer is 3 layer as it adds the saw although it's a very slim layer, and since you posted they have released a Pioneer X 3 layer knife (Pioneer plus scissors) and a 4 layer alox, the Farmer X (Farmer plus scissors).

If you like alox and like to have scissors, try the "Farmer X". I own tons of Victorinox knives of all sizes. My EDC-knife now is the Huntsman. If you grind the small flat screwdriver of the can-opener just a little bit smaller from the outside (~45°), it can drive Philips screws too. Upgrade it with a ferro-rod (Fire-fly, fitting in the tooth-pick compartment) and fire-starter (Helix, fitting in the corkscrew) from Tortoise Gear and you're close to a complete survival-kit. If you don't mind the extra bulk and weight, have a look at the Outrider!

Great video! I love SAK's, so fun and useful. For me I always need a toothpick, and tweezers are always useful so any scales that don't accomodate those are just a waste. Anyway, that's the great thing about SAK's, there's something for everyone. As for the hook, that's useful for literally anything you need to pull / grab. I read somewhere it's rated to 200 pounds.

On the Victorinox Classic SD can you speak to their “torque” strength in the newer models? I had one as a kid for a long time that my grandpa had bought me. One day I was using it to cut through something and got stuck so I wiggled and pulled.. whole thing fell apart. So since then I’ve avoided them and carry a folder and leatherman. My question I suppose is: are they tougher now? I keep seeing them on EDC and some of you have very professional setups and seem to trust them so I’m wondering if it’s worthwhile to try another one? Which would you suggest for an everyday carry that’s low profile and could go into front pocket?
@markoni5616

I carry a alox sd on my keys as they are stronger than the standard sd. For small glasses, replacing batteries etc it should be fine but nothing more. The one I carry everyday on my person as a pocket knife is the Alox pioneer X. Its the pioneer with scissors. I did by a ranger in yellow (basically a huntsman /fieldmaster) with extra file, but the thickness is a bit too much. If your looking for a great keychain friendly SAK, then I would recommend the signature lite. It's a SD, plus it has a small pen and small light. It gets rid of the need to carry a pen or torch separately. I will probably do a new video showing all the new ones I have

wicked yellow sak..... my favorite is by far the pioneer x. for 3 layer... if for some reason i had to go plastic, it would be between the climber and the supertinker... not sure if i would go for corkscrew with mini screwdriver, or the phillips as the can opener is a phillips. i think the fieldmaster is a great knife, possibly the best set of tools out there, but i wont go to 4 layer ....just too much for me ..i like my knife with me every single day and im a city boy...next thing i would be roaming the city of london with 2 greyhounds , a ferret, a pair of wellies and my 10 layer sak.... nothing wrong with that, but just not me. favorite 2 layer has to be a tossup between the tinker and the pioneer. i do also have a climber, and my first sak which ws a spartan. i use the climeber a lot to be honest though, i miss the short blade when i carry the pioneer x...i used it for everything and the large blade for food... now i use the large blade for everything including cutting fruit and stuff. good video mate...your camera and colours look great...like a bloody shop.

Nice collection (y) I've got a camper for maybe 15 years and It's still in a good shape. However If I lost it I would get a tourist, a sportsman or a spartan (that one would be tough since Sparta is a football rival club in my city :) ). I just almost never use a saw. I don't want to fall into collecting though, I like having one SAK which is associated with memories :)

Interesting video, but one thing to point out is there’s no real similarity between the Spartan and the Pioneer. The Spartan is the baseline model on which other greater layer plastic-scaled SAKs expand from. The Alox knives; Pioneer, Farmer etc; are different in that they only have tools on one side plus the likes of the main blade is from thicker stock. Keep up the good work tho’. 👍

Happy Saturday Markoni in the forlorn UK ( I am an ex-patriate Englishman from S. London) Sorry to correct you but the Field Master is Not a Climber with another layer it is in fact the poorer cousin of the top of the line Huntsman, the major difference being the Field Master has a Philips screwdriver as a back layer tool ( totally the wrong place for one making its usefulness limited ) instead of the Corkscrew which has the advantage of being useful as an extra tool holder by adding a tinder spiral & a mini-screwdriver to it. I found your video today Saturday 14th August 2021 so you line up of the top 5 of 2019 is rather dated with the introduction of both the Pioneer X with a scissors & the top of the range of the Pioneer series - the Farmer X with wood saw & scissors & the introduction of the Firefly & Fire Ant ferro rods for SAK's & tinder spirals. I am a lifelong SAK's user, I don't have an absolute favourite but have a variety of them in my EDC rotation according to what I feel I will need on any particular day, the exception being my fixed key ring SAK the 58mm Midnite Manager with its mini-tools , LED & pen. The 2nd SAK will either be a Gentleman's knife such as the 111mm Garant ( not UK legal ), a 93mm Pioneer or Pioneer X, a 84mm Cadet , an 84mm Sportsman & a 84mm Tourist ( both modified with Ferro rods in place of the toothpick & a tinder spiral & mini-screwdriver on the corkscrew making them crossovers between a Gentleman's knife & a mini-tool kit knife ) . My 93mm Farmer X is likewise a crossover tool fulfilling both roles and my dedicated multi-tool SAK's are the 91mm Huntsman ( I have 7 all fitted with Ferro rods in place of the toothpick & a tinder spiral & mini-screwdriver on the corkscrew & I have different coloured Plus scales on 5 of them which are also fitted with the SwissQlip for convenient pocket carry ) or the smaller equivalent the Victorinox Delmont range 85mm EvoGrip S17 ( with a lock blade & not UK legal ) or if I don't feel I need a wood saw then I carry a 91mm Climber ( I have 5 all fitted like my Huntsman with Ferro rods, tinder & mini-screwdrivers & 3 of them have Plus scales & SwissQlips ) . The only SAKs that I have with a back layer Philips screwdriver are the 91mm Deluxe Tinker which is a Home tool kit SAK & the 85mm EvoGrip S18 which is smaller version of the Field Master with a back layer Philips but rarely carry it. I do have 2 other SAK's with the more useful In-Line Phillips - the Spartan Lite ( also a Home tool kit SAK ) & the 111mm Outrider ( not UK legal as it has Slide Lock ) which is basically a larger Huntsman with the addition of the in-line Philips. I don't carry the Spartan but have several decorative scaled ones in my collection. I rotate my SAK's, I like them all & cant say that I have an absolute favourite .

Aah well I disagree totally of course lol but that's no bad thing, I do like your choice actually and my top 5 (of the ones I own) is not too dissimilar to yours. They are in no particular order. Climber Moneyclip Farmer Farmer X Swisschamp As you can see I like scissors and saws but only 2 of those have both. It may look weird having Farmer and Farmer X together in my Top 5 but I do carry both. Like today the Farmer combined with Nextool Mini which has scissors. Another day I may carry it with the Moneyclip, and Knipex Cobra XS pliers. Or I may carry the Moneyclip together with my Spyderco Urban, and Knipex Cobra XS If I carry the Swisschamp together with the Knipex and Spyderco, I am equipped for anything and believe it or not it isn't too bulky or heavy, it all fits snugly in the right pocket & 5th pocket of my jeans. Farmer X and Knipex together is pretty tough and capable too.

Thanks for the comment. Since I've made the video my top 5 has almost totally changed. I don't get around to making videos much anymore but I now have the super tinker, farmer x, alox cadet, ranger, swiss champ and compact. The one I use the most though not in that list is the rambler as its on my keys and has a great tool set. The compact is great but lacks a Phillips so the super tinker is a compromise, although everytime I use it I think I should just stick with the fieldmaster

#1: The reamer has no hole for sewing etc., other versions do, and in other versions the sharp edge is angled to bore holes. #2: The additional small screwdriver is perfect for tightening the hinges of (sun)glasses etc. #3: The saw in former versions had a nice tip to e.g. clean your nails, or pry. The new shape works for widening a hole made by the awl, reamer, or what you name it. #5: "On the back, you got a reamer" is not true, you show a corkscrew, and I coud not see a reamer. AFAIK, the small screwdriver is optinonal with all types, but I guess, many vendors add one as a goodie. I got one for free, when asking for it. What I want to add: In newer models, there is a small needle in the scale behind the corkscrew. The back of the saw is very sharp and can be used perfectly as a striker for firesteel. There also is a firesteel available on the market ("firefly"), which can replace the toothpick, and surprisingly works well. I think, not from Victorinox, but other vendors. The bottle opener features a small dent - the cable stripper, meant to dismantle isolated wires. I have used this very often, but with the larger Victorinox knives it is replaced by a sharp string cutter. If you don't bother about perhaps losing your warranty, you can modify this dent with a file to such a cutter. And if you don't want to break your nails opening the tools, use the pliers, clean the knife, and apply Ballistol as a lubricant, which I have found to be compliant with the steel.

My SAK collection consists of ~60 knives, varying from Cellidor to Alox in all sizes, but my all-time favourite is the Compact. I put Climbers in all my vehicles but EDC the Compact. I always find other people's preferred SAK interesting, and why they prefer one model over another. Thank you for making a great video comparison of different models. 👍🏼

There is alox version with scissors instead of saw, if thats your fancy. Its what I've with me as well. I've about dozen others, so that's that, the one I used longest (7 years and since it was first) and still carry it in back pack is Huntsman. Usually what travels in my jeans pocket is Tinker and on Key chain leatherman Squirt. If I wasn't afraid of my Alox scaled version getting stolen while me being drunk somewhere I would carry that instead of Tinker.lmao

I've very recently got a couple of SAK's after using a lot of "high end" single blade folders. Mainly because of our stupid laws on knife carry,,, I must say I'm extremely disappointed with the quality of the steel, of the main blade.!! I cut up a couple of cardboard boxes yesterday, and the blade went from shaving sharp, to blunt, in a few minutes, !!

I’m sorry your government restricts what you can buy and carry. I think I’ll people should have a right to buy any item that they wish if they can afford it within reason. Owning a pocket knife because it is cool is no different than buying a polished hammer because it looks better than the cheap one.

03 Aug 2019 - (1) You should have had all the blades and tools already out instead of fussing to get them open. (2) You should have written out each knife description instead of pausing to look at features and then guess. (3) Why didn't you consider reviewing what you recorded so that you could hear your hesitations and lack of clarity. I can't believe the number of KZbin presenters who just don't properly prepare, evaluate, review, and then video a cleaned up version. I gave your review a thumbs down because of what I mentioned.

Fair enough. I don't get alot of time to make videos with a young family and work etc so I just jump in and do it. I only do it to maybe be a little informative to someone who's maybe looking to get one, not be professional or have a highly edited video

Thanks for the reviews. The first Alox was the issued 'Soldier.' On the civilian market this was sold as the 'Pioneer. ' There were some superficial differences between these two knives, but the main one was that the Pioneer had the key-ring and the issued Soldier did not. The Farmer is the Pioneer with the addition of an excellent wood saw. However, the Farmer also carries with it the curse of the Pioneer, namely, the keyring. The reason that I write 'curse' is that it forms a particular 'hot spot' on the handle which digs into the palm. You do not find this irritating keyring on the Alox Solo or the Alox Army 2. Why on earth would somebody but the Farmer on their keyring. What were they thinking at Victorinox?? What I would recommend you look at is the Alox Army 7. This is the Farmer plus a hawksbill (or pruning) blade. The very blade that you find on the Harvester and the Alox Army 2. The Alox Army 7 (like the Alox Army 2) does not have the keyring. For me the ideal EDC (urban) is the Pioneer and the ideal EDC (rural) is the Farmer. It is easy to solve the Farmer 'problem.' All you need is a small hacksaw and a dremel. The 'operation' takes but five minutes and you will never know that the keyring was there at all.
