Although it literally never ever gets mentioned, my favourite SAK is the Bantam. Essentially a trimmed down cadet which combines the bottle opener and can opener into an incredible single 'combi' tool which works great for either task. It's a single layer SAK weighing in at just 29g (1 ounce) which is 11g lighter than the SAK minichamp (also one of my favourites and on my keyring). It's an invisible knife which never leaves my person and I completely forget it's there.

I carried the Executive for years. In college, the orange peeler worked really well for unlocking simple door locks on practice rooms, study rooms, etc.. Just reach into the crack between the strike plate and the door and then pull back, using the hooked part of it to snag and retract the latch. Sort of like using a credit card, but much easier. Also, the tip of the orange peeler is a flathead screwdriver.

I couldn’t quite wrap my head around your observations: first you say the pioneer x is too big, and shows that prefers a custom that is about the same size (thickness of the scales), then you say the cadet is too small… well, there is no in between (except maybe the Evo series, that have broader blades, at 85mm length, but with thicker scales and no alox). These custom scales are very cool and the addition of the pocket clip seems a nice touch. I really forget about my 2 layered SAKs in my pockets, especially when hanging with a pocket clip. They don’t bother me at all.

Great review Taylor. These knives are so iconic, and I believe every serious blade collector should own a few. The fit and finish for such a massively produced tool is remarkable and you can't beat the price for a Swiss-made product. I own a dozen or so SAKs and carry a Champ everywhere, I use it frequently and it's the "safe" knife when someone at works wants to borrow a blade for something. There is no way I'm handing them my Custom Mini Crooked River :)

I picked up the cadet recently and I really love it. I however bought the 2020 limited edition version in the Indigo Blue Alox handle scales. I picked up the 2020 limited edition version in memory of my mother that passed away just a couple of weeks into 2021. She was much loved by everyone that knew her but she was my roommate, closest friend and confidant. My mother was Chronically ill and had been close to death several times over the last decade of her life but finally her illness came to an end on January 15 2021. Interestingly enough just 2 weeks after the passing of her father someone I greatly respected and considered a good friend. So in memory of my mother especially but my grandfather as well I picked up the Victorinox Cadet 2020 limited edition version in Indigo Blue it is and will always be a special piece of my pocket knife and EDC collection.

I thought I'd like the alox scales, but I don't. Sure, they're thin and look great, but they're just too damn slippery. This exists! Sort of. It's the Duke of Edinburgh variant, or DofE. The only tradeoff is the main blade is blunted, which might be useful in an emergency if you're, say, cutting a seatbelt. You still have a sharp point on the tool with the awl (or scissors).
@pudimdecana51
@pudimdecana51 Жыл бұрын
There is also the Scientist (2 layers as the compact, loses the scissors, but gets the in-line philips and magnifying glass) or the Yeoman (same as Scientist, but 3 layers, keeping the scissors). Both are out of line now and expensive on ebay, but there are some custom makers that can do them for you.

I got my first victorinox when I was 10, a stainless steel scaled Executive model, same model my dad carried on him throughout his adult life, but it didn't have the toothpick and tweezers so he gave it to me, I still have it. I now carry a cyber tool lite in a pouch on my belt, far too big for the pocket. I use pretty much every tool on there, with varying frequency, during my work day. I have a modified Huntsman that I use as a carving tool. I've built up a substantial collection of models over the years though.

Having two blades on a Swiss Army knife means you can have one (larger) blade as a beater and keep and use the other super sharp. Cork sniffers hate the steel but it’s easy to sharp and was never designed to be your main tool. You’ll probably use your Swiss army ahead of your edc jewelleries.

I've always carried the Fieldmaster or the Huntsman; but more-so the FM because I prefer having a screwdriver over a corkscrew. and I don't mind carrying a knife with some weight. While I do carry dedicated blades, if I had to chose out of all my knives, I'd carry a SAK! My dad has carried one all his life, I think his is the classic red Fieldmaster, an it's served him well. I took it from him when it was gunked and the parts were stiff, but it was nothing a little soaking in water with dish detergent, brushing, drying, sharpening, and lubricating didn't fix! After that got his SAK nearly back to working like new (minus the inevitable wear marks that come with years of use; which I could have sent to Swiss Army for a total repair with new scale and dissembled cleaning, but I wanted the satisfaction of feeling accomplished lol). The smaller blades are for finer cutting work. For a knife enthusiast the blades are nothing to run home about, but it's good stainless steel, and in the hands of a person who's good at sharpening and honing, the blades easily fix. I would like if SAK opened up a "Custom Shop" where you could customize your SAK from ground up, your tools, size, scales, finish (stainless steel, blacked) ect. Would cost you much more but you get the SAK YOU want if none of their premade models match your fancy.

I have since put the huntsman in my toolbox as I never had a use for the saw or the corkscrew and the SD classic still lives on my keychain. Now I carry a rambler in my watch pocket everywhere because I always need to use the small screwdriver, I also just bought a Tinker Deluxe because it has the small pliers and the big screwdriver which is exactly the toolset I need every day, I make jewelry and the pliers are perfect for bending wire, rings and squeezing beads, absolute 10/10 tools.

I have the Minichamp Alox. It's nice. But... I'm "downgrading". I'm going with the Manager. It's gat all the stuff from the Minichamp that I require (1 blade, scissors, nail file, and that COMPLETELY UNDER-RATED combo tool with the actual in-line Phillips driver as most everything I need a screwdriver for is some form of electronics with small Philipssseseseeseses). However, as well as the tweezers and the toothpick, it comes with a small, slide-out, pressure cartridge pen in the scales. It's not for writing your memoirs, but for a quick note or signing a receipt? It's perfect. (I believe the standard Minichamp also has the pen, but there's a bunch of tools I don't need and it's more expensive... and heavier? Is that a concern at this scale? 🤷 Also, with only 4 tools, I won't have to go searing through everything just to get that one thing I actually want.) Anyway, the Manager will be going into my 5th pocket, it's replacing three other EDC items that I've been carrying, and... yeah. Aside from keys and phone (which has my wallet attached to it), that'll be my only extra carry item.

I edc the compact and it's honestly perfect for me. The only tool I don't use on it is the parcel hook because the corkscrew is very useful for opening knots. You can screw it into the centre of a knot and just pull, never had it not work. It's slim enough that I can put it in the inside pocket of my jacket and it doesn't bother me. I don't carry any other blade unless I'm doing DIY

for an edc in switzerland, the parcel hook is useful for at least 2 reasons: 1) (re)attaching bicycle chains 2) (news)paper recycling demands the papers be bound to a parcel and deposited outdoors.

A 58mm in some form on key ring with a Firefly vs toothpick. Pocket a SAK w/saw & usually scissors, up to Champ. With Firefly or FireAnt & tinder. Live in rural earthquake area 18-25 mi to get home if possible. Great channel

4:59 I just used the corkscrew on my old Hunstman today to pull out a rubber gasket from my garden hose. Never say never my friend. My favorite, which I don’t have yet, is the Farmer. Smallest one with scissors and a saw.

The secondary blade is slightly sharper than the main blade almost like a scalpel for finer work.

Personally, when I have a folder with two or more blades, I'll reserve the longest one for cutting foodstuffs, and a shorter one for cutting anything else, to reduce the chance of contamination.

Yeah, I wouldn’t carry an SAK without scissors. It’s become one of my most used tools over all the rest. I’d be lost without them I think. My next purchase is going to be a Compact for those warm days when I want to wear shorts and don’t need my heavier Huntsman or Handyman (my 2 typical edc’s).

If you need the saw, get the outrider. Want alox? Pioneer X. Otherwise Climber. Do you really need a Philips driver? OK, get the explorer. Get the smallest knife that satisfies 90% of your needs, so you carry it 100% of the time.

@BestDamnEDC Seems like you are in need of the model called "The Manager". It has the following tools: tweezers pressurized ballpoint pen key ring small blade bottle opener Phillips screwdriver 0/1, magnetic wire stripper nail file screwdriver 2.5 mm scissors There is also a "Midnite Manager" with a built in LED instead of tweezers. It's really a toss up for me with one to use between the two but I think the tweezers will win simply because my phone doesn't have them ;)

I wish I could specially order a Victorinox knife made with the blades you desire and not what they group together. At least they should make one special for wood carvers (two small blades designed similar to "Flex- Cut" with a saw blade and large roughing blade.) Blades need a Rockwell hardness of 58 or higher and stainless steel no# 440 or better with lockable blades. No more than 3 slots thickness, without any blades on the back. Rounded handles for comfort would be nice too.

The first pocket knife I had was a cheap generic camping knife with a wood effect plastic handle the second was a Chinese made Swiss army knockoff that had a gold cross in a gold circle on a dark red plastic handle and both were fairly good knifes the first proper Swiss army knife I got myself when I turned 18 which was the camper

That’s kinda weird that your buddy who makes custom saks would stop doing tool changes… which would be the only reason why you would buy a custom sak in the first place lol

As long as these don’t lock and are less than 3” then these could be the ‘only’ option EDC in U.K., But even then, carrying them in public would be seen as not socially acceptable.

I like the Compact best and also use the Minichamp Alox. The Compact has everything I need, nothing I don't need and it's flat, light and perfectly sized. I always thought the two blades are there because you can use one for food and the other one for working (?).

The 'big' blade on the pioneer class knives is literally at the limit of what's legal to carry in the UK "without good reason", gave me a good laugh when you called it a backup blade

I know this is an older video but the corkscrew on a swiss army knife can be used for getting tight knots undone. Just to give you an idea of why it could be more useful even if youre not a wine drinker.

I too carry a SAK daily amongst other blades. Currently carrying a Sportsman also for the nail file. I've salvaged 84mm scissors from torn up old SAKs and am working on a "Cadet X" and a "Sportsman X" custom mod.

Idk man as a millwright having tweezers is essential for getting metal splinters out as well as having a straight pin in the scales. I think getting a little extra on your saks is missing the point of a Swiss Army knife.

My favourite Victorinox is a model no longer produced by Victorinox. It is the old Voyageur Alox, with a main blade, a combo tool with can opener, cap lifter, screw driver and a wire stripper on the first layer. And on the second layer the Voyageur has got a pair of scissors. Very nice companion for the urban environment. And my second choice would be one of the old Golfer models. It is a slightly smaller Victorinox Compact, without the nail file on the hook.

Best Combo IMHO: Spirit X with Explorer for Urban and Swisstool with 111mm Rucksack for the outdoors. Honorable mentions: Urban: Climber,Compact,Super Tinker,Deluxe Tinker,Alox Classic,Electrician,Pioneer,Pioneer X,Cadet,Rambler,Ambasador. - For the outdoors: Harvester,Farmer,2 handed Trecker or Forester (Rucksack is and works better overall.Newer models are only unnecessary more robust and much heavier, but don't work better,IMO same goes for the Rangergrip series). Huntsman and Fieldmaster are great for both Urban and the Outdoors. My top 5: Spirit X,Explorer,Rucksack,Alox Classic,Harvester. PS: Most SAK collectors are located in the USA, that's a fact!

My absolute favorite SAK is the Tinker Deluxe. The scissors and small pliers come in clutch and I basically use them every day. I work with small PCB’s so the precision of the jaws are amazing :) That’s the smallest tool I can carry where I feel I could tackle basically everything that would be asked of me on a daily basis, unless it comes to large tasks that would require heavy pliers or a saw. Great video!
