For me, the red icing on Luke's cake symbolized the Crane family taking back the positive meaning of the color. It seemed like the red icing was a beacon, a way of showing things are back in the surviving Cranes' hands, that red now is a warm, happy color, rather than the insatiable hunger of Hill House. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be totally off, but that's my two cents. x)

I really like this theory, and it would explain why there's no window in the scene (since it's ALWAYS there). The picture in the back is slightly reminiscent of it, but not quite. It's almost like a bastardization of the red room, which is really cool.

With all these mind blown theories, I can say that I maybe found a little thing. It is really just little but when Hugh goes in the red room to hug Olivia and Nell, you see Olivia looking at Steve and Nell has her eyes closed. This must be an intentional choice, everything in this show is. Olivia has her eyes looking to Steve because she wants him to join him (in death), like every member of the family. Nell doesn’t look at Steve because she wants him to go and live his life and she doesn’t want him to join the dead

Here’s my crazy theory. The kids and the mom all had an escape to the red room while living in the house but they never show the dads escape, or so you think! The black mold was the dad’s red room. if you think about it the black mold was the one thing the dad could not fix. Also right before the door slams shut with the kids in it, the dad succumbed to fear and was devoured by black mold for a few seconds. Before regaining his composure and it let him go

@@iLastStar its possible; the red room was a physical thing; nell and shirley accidentally walk into theos red room and steve always found luke in his clubhouse. the dudleys daughter ended up getting access to it so why not the dudleys' the people who knew more about that house than anyone alive at that time? If it kept them busy and away from what the house considered to be trouble i'm sure the house did reveal the red room to them in a more discrete way as well.

Not liking the last theory. I'm apt to believe it was a happy ending and Luke was sober for 2 years. However if we are to go with the theory of red meaning something I'm going to say yes the significance of red means that sobriety is short lived and the battle is still on. I loved the ending. It made the story not so sad and that everything didnt happen in vain.

For me, the red flag (see what I did?) on the cake scene was the fact that Steven's wife is pregnant. We know that can't be true (yes, I know that vasectomies can be reversed, but it doesn't seem plausible in this case), and the only time we saw her pregnant before was when Steven was trapped in the red room. So, for me, they're all still in there.

The director talked about the original ending where in the background you see the red room window and know they never left, when they went to film he changed it because he thought it was too mean and they deserved a happy ending. I would've prefered the original.

@@ubiquitouslight I just finished the show (had seen Occulus years ago in theatres and Doctor Sleep last year at home and now, finding out that Mike Flanagan is adapting a Christopher Pike book I loved as a teen, I decided to watch everything he's done--from the amazinglg creepy Oculus short, to Hush--which is excellent--to Gerald's Game--liked that one a lot as well, but less than Hush--and now I'm going through his three Netflix shows). I would've preferred the subtle Red Room ending too. I needed more horror from this series, less sentimentality at the end. The house being this haunted thing or quasi-Lovecraftian horror was fascinating and I wanted more of it. I wanted to know more of the ghosts' stories (though I supposed it could've gotten too much like American Horror Story Season 1 if it concentrated more on the ghosts). Come to think of it, this was a bit too much like a happier version of American Horror Story's ending. Beautifully filmed, well-acted and scored, but it didn't stick the landing for me. The height of this series is the Nell/Bent-Neck Lady scenes in Episode 5 (and that episode in general) and the technical accomplishment of the long takes and performances in Episode 6. Otherwise, this feels very been there, one that. Here's hoping for better from Bly Manor or, more likely from the sounds of people's enthusiasm for it, Midnight Mass.

Mike Flanagan said that the original idea was to place the red room window in that shot. But the night before they filmed that shot he was really upset by the thought that none of the Cranes made it out of the house alive. He thought it was cruel. So they replaced the window with a painting. So, according to Mike Flanagan, only Olivia, Nell and Hugh didn't make it out of the house.

It's a bit more subtle. Theo's bargaining could be interpreted by her habit of always coming up with sort term ways of dealing with her problems. Instead of facing them and letting people in, she trades her emotions for sex and alcohol.

I'm quite surprised that there is no sexual abuse theory... In the third episode Theo sees this girl who believes there is a monster that enters her room every night and it turns out to be her adoptive parent abusing her. Theo explicitaly says she created a monster since it was easier than coping with the abuse. Then in the NEXT episode we know Luke's monster is a man with a hat who enters their room at night and goes to her sister's bed first and then to his. The only living character in the show seen with a hat is their father, Hugh, in Nelly's funeral. That stood out to me. If the father was abusing Nelly, that would explain why the twins are the most damaged. Then the mother starts realizing that and that makes her go crazy. That would be why Poppy says something about the twins like "what if they were inmersed in the worst nightmare, illness, etc" Is there any worst nightmare than being sexually abused by a parent?? Then Poppy says to Liv what she's got to do in the ear and then is when she tries to kill HUGH (not the twins yet) with a screw. However that knowledge is not explicit in her mind, it comes out subconsciently (and Claire encourages her to follow her instinct), but it's like she knew about the irreversible damage done to them and then she started imaginig the terrible future for them. So eventually she would have got obsessed with protecting them and release them from pain to the point of getting crazy and trying to kill them. Then the father would have stopped her but, after that, probably horrified for the damaged he had done to the family, would have stayed away from them. As Hugh himself says, he was holding a door to protect them from the monsters (like he was talking about his own perversions). It stood out to me aswell that at Nelly's wedding he doesnt look happy at all, he looks even upset, like he was jelous. Then also he seems very cold about her death, which looks a little psycho to me. Also those two buttons on her eyes kind of make her look like a cloth doll, and Hugh's told to be the last one who got close to the coffin and coul've put them there, like a hint she was his doll for him. Finally, the bent-necked woman that haunts Nelly could be seen as a suicidal pulsion ("a gohst is a wish - death wish-") that assaults her, as often happens to traumatized people even if they don't remember the trauma. Considering this, Nelly could have rememered everything when going back to the house and that could've been so shocking that she killed herself. As it often happens, suicide might be triggered by a memory because of the stress it provokes, without the person really wanting to kill themself (Nelly and her mom both are literally pushed to do it). Finally, there is something strange with the Red Room (apart from the reference to The Shining RED RUM), the tea party and the hats. It all reminds me of Alice in Wonderland Madhatter tea party, like what we see in there was somehow delusional and something else could've happen. The fact is that, in the end, all who could have known about the sexual abuse kill themselves when they get there: Nelly, Liv, Hugh and presumably Luke.

Another crazy theory. The kids all received a premonition type gift from the mom all very specific about what they would identify with, Nell received gifts from both mom and dad which were things that both could be hung around her neck, the necklace and the watch (maybe counting down to her final demise?) Theo received the gloves (maybe so she wouldn’t keep discovering the houses secrets), Luke got the big boy hat( I am not sure the symbolism behind this one except maybe he’s the boy that never grew up), and Shirley received the casket for the cats pointing towards her becoming a mortician. The only one that did not receive a gift was Steven which makes you wonder what her gift to him was? 🧐

My objection to theory one is that we see Steven, luke, Theo, and Shirley go outside of the house at the end so they're safe. Plus they can't be the part of the house as anyone who is stuck in the house has to die first. Nelly died by getting hanged, the mother died by falling off the stares if I remember correctly, and Hugh died because of the overdose. Apart from that, the cause of death for any of Crane siblings was not shown implying that they escaped the house.

Can someone explain to me what the point of the ending was? I felt like that whole show was about the fact that ghosts are BAD, and that the fact that the family is kept in the house is not a good thing. But in the last 15 mins, it's shown that everything is happy and all the dead people are still in the house and can't move on. I don't get how everything can be okay when the house is still standing?! The families and people who died there are still trapped. The motivation solely being on keeping the Dudley's together feels kind of pointless now that they are all dead.

The whole show specifically says that the House itself is the haunting evil, not the ghosts. At first we think it's because there are ghosts haunting it, but by the end of the show we are revealed that they are just spirits hanging around and bothering no one (except for that one crazy lady in Liv's dreams) being kept by the house itself. The ending is happy for the living because the siblings survive and learn to confront their fears together, meanwhile for the dead we realize that the house is not an entire embodiment of evil, but simply a hungry being that otherwise lets its spirit occupants 'live' in peace. Inside there's no pain, no dangers, and the house shows to each of them its warmest version of when they lived there, as well as allows the spirits to stay together and in any physical age that they wish to have. It's not a hell of eternal despair, these families can truly live in eternal peace and happiness inside once they accept it, like in a dream

Nell is the main villian. She have attention seeking disorder. She was always bothering the hell out of her mum and drove her to go into the red room for a tea party. She also did such as writing her name on the wall and claiming it wasnt here. She then came back and haunted all he siblings and drove them insane. At the end she ruins their "dream" and all the siblings are sent packing while the father is killed and Nell is left to have all the attention of both parents.

Villain definitely not. She doesnt ruin their dreams she pulls out from unconsciousness when their dreams are at their worst point in the red room. She also single handily saves luke from drinking the tea which would have caused him to die.

Im sorry haunting of hill house was npt scary but mediocre at best , i was so bored i would rather watch paint dry . If there is a season 2 they better increase the theatrics of horror times 2 or it will be the death of hill house ..

I have a fan theory that Hill House was the stinkiest pile of crap I've ever seen, an insult to the horror genre and anyone who values good writing or acting. The opening act was intriguing, the floating ghost was great in his first appearance, Episode 4 was the beginning of the melodramatic soap opera writing BUT had great direction.... from there it was downhill. The last episode is the most D.R.E.A.D.F.U.L. garbage I've ever seen in my life. Ever.
