I am glad that I don’t have a problem comparing myself to specific artists but I do get down on myself when I can’t really do something. I am SOO bad at making anything leafy. So when I was making my Christmas cards I challenged myself to make cards that did have leaves. They weren’t all good so I switched to making things I was comfortable with and even though there was a big difference in quality, I am glad I tried it out. But you are right, I look back at what I am good at now compared to a couple months ago and the difference is crazy! So I know eventually I’ll get better at what I am struggling with now! Thank you so much for your videos! You’re so sweet Mako ☺️

I'm feeling torn because my husband wants me to go back to my acrylic painting with a more realistic style, but I got bored with that and wanted a more creative style. Does anyone else have family members interfering with their art journey? So frustrating. Anyway, happy holidays and have a wonderful 2020.
@Makoccino5 жыл бұрын
Aww I totally get that! I always got asked if I can't just paint something like Bob Ross! Eh no! I want to paint what I like and what brings me joy! You should paint whatever makes you happy! You're the artist! I stopped asking my family anything art related or showing my art to them long time ago because of that 😂
@MeeshT5 жыл бұрын
I think that sort of advice tends to come from a good place of encouragement but, if it's not what you want, then you do you. I have been switching among different crafts in between periods of frustration rather than just techniques or mediums and that has helped me feel more accomplished and creative than sticking to a single style ever has. Best wishes!
@annettefournier96555 жыл бұрын
I hate it when that happens. I don't even like doing commission work because it's what someone else wants and not what I want or feel. I discourage them saying ; we can look at the same thing and see it totally different. I am not a camera and my interpretation of a subject may be totally different than what you see, as people even perceive colors differently. People look at me like I'm nuts. I'm too new to try to cater to someone else's vision when I'm just finding my way. Hood luck to you. Do what you feel.😁👍

Hi Mako! Just so you know that the painting, that you're recreating in this video is the reason why I got deeper into watercolor, it was exactly one year ago!!! I was surprised that I can make something decent with watercolor, after years of abandoning drawing and painting which were used to be my hobby back in school years. I was getting back to drawing and painting to heal myself... I am still working on getting better and better within, and I still enjoy watercolor so much, it does teach me that beauty is there when you let go a little bit :') Thank you Mako, for you might have saved my life last year.

Your mentioning the quality of the paper is appreciated. I have found that quality paper is key. It's much more important than the paint and even the brushes although the latter is second on my list of the three. I've been using Arches for years--both pads and full sheets that I cut down. Last year, I purchased an Arches 140 lb cold press pad that was faulty which is not my usual experience. The paint didn't act like it usually does (didn't move around at all when painting wet in wet) and when it dried, there were white streaks. I was very frustrated since I thought I was doing something wrong. I hadn't been painting in watercolor for a while so naturally, I thought it was me. Now, I believe there was too much sizing in the paper and I registered a complaint on the store's website. Unfortunately, by that time, I had decided to use the paper for inks and demos with my young nieces. I am only mentioning this in case others experience something similar. Arches has been very reliable for me for years but I'm a bit hesitant to buy another pad. I haven't had the problem with the large sheets so perhaps that was an anomaly. I'm going to try the pads again because they are so portable but will return immediately if the paper does the same thing. Hopefully, it was a quality control issue at the time. I am usually very happy with Arches but I know the company was sold so that might have been the issue. Right now, I'm painting on Stonehenge pads which are also quite good.
@Makoccino5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing your story! I think this sometimes can happen as the paper is produced in batches and maybe you were just unlucky! I'm sure it happens to other brands as well. In fact one of my friends used some high quality paper that she never had problems with but one of the sheets she used were faulty as well. So I guess it can happen but it shouldn't be normal for sure!

The first thing I made with watercolour paints was almost 2 years ago.. and it was a tutorial you did. 'Easy Watercolor Painting Ideas for Beginners Step by Step' the middle one. I told myself right from the start: 'Let's make this same one again in about 6 months or 1 year from now and then keep doing that to see how you're doing.' I did and still plan on doing so. It is amazing to see that it gets easier. Not just in knowing what to do, what colours to use and how to mix/blend. But also in brush techniques and how you feel better because you can tell it is easier than last time. Thank you

I'm glad you can relate! I think it's like writing an essay or something similar. You put a draft onto paper and then you refine it! You might have a bestseller in your head but when you type it down it's not that great. But it's a foundation you can work with! The same goes for your art. In your head it might look amazing but you still need to translate it onto paper, and it not always works. But then you can just experiment and have fun while developing an even better version!

Another excellent video with excellent content. I loved the old paintings as well as the ones that were made in the video. Apart from all the valuable information shared in video the best part for me was seeing the paintings. I would specially like to mention the middle one as it was something like where a wizard would place their wand here and there and all the colors would burst out from nowhere and make a beautiful piece of art. Watching those paintings getting developed was really pleasant experience especially after a long rough week of work. I'm trying to incorporate some of the other techniques you have shared in previous videos in my current portrait drawing so that's going to be a fun experience. So far this is the best KZbin channel for art as per my experience and one that I can refer to anyone who wants to get started with art without worrying about them not being able to grasp anything or missing out on something which is vital. You're doing an excellent work Mako keep it up. I wish we had art teachers like you. :D

For me it was really fun to see myself improve while working on the same painting. I was following your tutorial about doing tree reflections on water and I painted four trees, and the difference between tree 1 and tree 4 amazes me. I can clearly see that as, I was working, I realized what I was doing wrong and fixed it in a sort of step-by-step process. As part of my journey so far, I think I'll keep messy trees 1 and 2 as they are, as a reminder of where I started and what I can achieve with practice :D
