You forgot Rule #6 - if you're departing SNA, you MUST end your handoff call with CYA. Someone should make a mod to FS2020 default ATC to say CYA ( I do remember it used to say "Good Day" but they took that out)

Yep. It's common phraseology in the real world. Not saying it's recommended, but extremely common, particularly older pilots, and especially airliners and corporate jets/turboprops.

Although I have yet to join Pilot Edge this is all good information. They really should include at least a link to your video on their website. I have been waiting to join because I don’t feel proficient enough yet at flight correctly to be on a network with other people flying and live controllers. Now that I have a better computer and controls I am hoping to join in the near future. I am also hoping to start working on getting my PPL within a year or so and feel that this will be a great benefit towards that end. I did learn something new though. I had no idea the “with you” statement was an annoyance thing for ATC. It’s always good to learn something new every day. :-)

I wonder when the phrase "with you" became anathema? That was common use among professional pilots when I started out in 1971, and just about every airline and military pilot used it regularly. It was vernacular, to be sure, and I doubt if it ever made the Pilot-Controller glossary, but it was very common and entirely acceptable usage. Another one is "no joy", meaning no visual contact with pointed out traffic. That one probably came out of the military, but only recently have I heard it excoriated in favor of whatever is currently the vogue in the P-C glossary (apparently "negative contact" which, by the way, has more than twice as many syllables and takes twice as long to cough up!). Backward progress!
@Bill4LE
@Bill4LE Жыл бұрын
No idea...it's one of those things that took on a life of it's own. It's not going to hurt anything but also isn't needed at all. "No joy" is military-based but not sure the origins of "with you." Sounds like a YT deep-dive topic for someone lol

Tip #6: Select a location where you are getting or plan to be getting flight instruction. This will help to link the radio communications training to your real world and relieves you of the added anxiety of trying to navigate totally unfamiliar places. But PilotEdge only covers sections of the west coast, you say? My point exactly!!!

All of the rules are same. A delta here is the same as a delta anywhere. It's a nice-to-have if you fly IRL within the coverage area but the varied airport, density and ability to cover bottom-up positions thoroughly makes ideal for training no matter where you live.

You're able to change the registration every flight if you want. It's more likely someone else will be using N172SP than your flight school's registration.

@@Bill4LE I'm a 120 hr non-instrument rated pilot so I dont know where "with you" might be used in IFR coms, but what should I say when handed off to a controller when i'm on flight following. Usually I say, so and so approach, my tail number and, "with you 1 thousand 500". I guess you could leave off the with you. Its all a matter of training. Ive never heard anyone say it without "with you"

Ya you're exactly right! "Approach, Cessna 123AB, one thousand five hundred." That's all you need. The "with you" thing has, in the last few years at least, become a meme. This video was made from a conversation with a controller about it haha. I had to come up with 4 other things to make a "list" haahahah. But ya, it keeps on going because it is used a lot IRL.

What kind of world are we living in? 1. Why is this actually a thing. 2. Life is so mundane that you have to pretend to be flying in the real world on a flight sim? Heres a great idea, go to the airport and take an introductory flight, save some money and go get you private. Cost is an issue? You got to pay to play, if its worth doing then you can make it happen.

I have been flying for forty years and have been saying “with you” all along. For the life of me, I don’t get the egregiousness of this utterance. We all use additional, non standard, words - “good morning”, “good evening” - both of which are more syllables than “with you”, so a case of wasting air time can hardly be compelling. The fact of the matter is that any common parlance words interjected into standard phraseology gives speech cadence which allows the brain to keep ahead of the mouth and avoid verbal stumbles. How the totally nonstandard exchange of pleasantries can be widely tolerated but “with you” cannot is beyond me. I have heard much worse. Fly in the UK and you will hear the totally pompous “THEEE VIRGIN” or “THEEE SPEEDBIRD”! Both sound totally ridiculous. But nothing I have ever heard on the radio sounds as infantile or inane as the clipped “SEEYA” that is creeping in! I know - OKAY BOOMER!! Anyway I see absolutely nothing wrong with saying “with you”. I will keep saying it to save airtime over saying “good morning”, “good evening” or, god forbid, the quadrasylabic “good afternoon”!
@Bill4LE
@Bill4LE 3 жыл бұрын
I don't use because I was told early on that, at least in certain ATC circles, it has become very eye-rolling and a bit of a meme to hate on it (i.e. Approach - N123AB - with you level 5,500" - "N123AB - Approach - and also with you." I think it stems more from a redundancy than "saving syllables." Also, it exploded in used due to the default in-game ATC on previous Microsoft Flight Sim games and has therefore been adopted by a lot of younger Airliner-only flight simmers. It's not "wrong" but it's also not right and looked at totally separately than pleasantries or the utterly charming "CYA!" :) (subjectively of course!).
@arrowdynamix9763
@arrowdynamix9763 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bill4LE I get your point. I wasn’t aware of the overuse of “with you” in previous versions of flight sims but it also seems to be a bugaboo amongst some real world flight instructors. Given all of the non standard phraseology on ATC, I just find it amusing that “with you” gets singled out. Funny what is acceptable and what is not! Anyway, I will try to mend the error of my ways! Meanwhile please forgive an oldtimer’s occasional slip. As for the utterly charming CYA (I didn’t even spell it right) I’m just jealous that I could never say that at my age sound as cool as you! Love your videos, BTW!
@Bill4LE

@@arrowdynamix9763 I honestly don't know where the hate came from either haha. I think it really came from an overuse from other sims like you said. And no worries at all! I love the challenge! When I started flying in the USAF in 1971, “with you” was essentially standard phraseology among controllers and professional pilots. This was long before flight simulators on pc’s, or Pilot Edge. So was “no joy” meaning traffic not in sight. I, too wonder when things changed!
