Telecasters aren't a guitar, they're a love affair. Sure you can go elsewhere, but nowhere says home quite like a Tele.

What I love about the Tele is that it develops your technique. It has only 2 pickups, 1 tone and 1 volume control, so you provide the pitch bends and the vibrato. If it sounds great, it’s because of your skill, and that, my friend, is gratifying...
@trushack

1) Like a Strat, it's tough as nails. 2) The bridge plate design. 3) For me, the Tele body shape feels "just right," even without the contours. 4) Also, for me, the three-barrel bridge. Intonation quirks aside, that barrel arrangement with the bridge plate is the key to the classic Tele tone recipe. 5) Keef.

right-on. I'm a Telecaster fan: 1.They look good especially in black. 2.They always stay in tune no mater how much abuse you give it, 3. Feels good in hand not too heavy, 4. Simple controls that don't get in the way. (When I play a Strat I'm always hitting the pick-up switch) 5. Suitable for playing many different styles and sound great.

Another thing I like about Telecasters is partscasters. Buy the body you want (ash, pine, mahogany, alder), the neck you want (maple, rosewood, thick, thin, any radius), the pickups you want, the hardware you want. The finish you want. Presto, your own custom guitar.

I have an unhealthy obsession with all things Telecaster and have never played one I couldn’t fall in love with! Agree with all the points in your top 5...would add that I love the timeless classic design which has stayed largely unchanged since Leo’s Broadcaster in 1951. I love that you have to work with it to get all the great tones...unlike a Strat which hands it to you on a platter. I love the hard edges of the body that dig into your rib cage and forearm as if to say,”If you’re gonna play with me there’ll be some pain involved...but the killer tone & attitude is more than worth it!” I really do wonder if the extra wood on the Tele body, compared to the heavily-contoured Strat body, contributes to a more strident powerful tone & attack. Anyhow thanks again for your great video mate!!

Great video as always, Mr Shane. My latest guitar is a Squier Affinity Tele in butterscotch blonde that I tried at the local Guitar Center. I was completely floored by how it sounded, rivals my Seymour Duncan equipped MIM Tele. It wasn't until I went to put locking tuners and new strings on it that I realized it wasn't string-through body. I plan on getting 2 more; the racing green and competition orange. Keep up the good work!!

I am a lefty too. I have been playing a Kramer Focus 3000 since 1987. I found a used SX VTG Tele for $99 at a local shop a few weeks ago and bought it. I really like playing it but the pickups were insanely noisy and the paint was a red metallic that looked good at a distance but was a little too sparkly for me. They got in a used classic vibe with that butterscotch finish that shows the grain a few days later. The shop gave me my full value back for the SX so I made the purchase. I am having a blast with it and exploring new sounds and styles.

“I hardly ever use a tone control for anything.” I use it to cut overly fizzy highs. I do this both on my high-output Ibanez and on my Gibson ES-335. In each case, I roll it back to 7, and something magical happens. On the Ibanez, in particular, it only took me about 20 years to figure this out. In the meantime, I was dissatisfied with the tone. Now, it’s perfect. On my G&L ASAT Classic (1993), I use the tone knob to simulate a humbucker tone. It’s actually surprisingly good for that. On all of my other guitars, I use the tone knob to remind myself about how much I otherwise hate tone knobs!

Please stop using the word twang, but anyways u are right about the les Paul sound because it makes the exact same sound tone in the rhythm to dont cry from guns n roses which we know they used les paul, just something I had noticed after playing mine for so many years and btw I hate the word twang because all guitars can be considered twangy, its how u play them that determines what they sound like

Two things I like about my tele: there is no middle pickup in the way for when I'm riffing/soloing (as opposed to the strat). The other thing, as you mentioned, is the simplicity. I like that there's only three pickup settings. So I go from rhythm on the first two and than hit the switch to the bridge pickup for lead.

Im more of a Strat guy but there’s something magical about a Tele. Mine is a BSB which I’ve modded with rail humbuckers - looks just like Shane’s, plus push pull pots and a 5-way switch for series and out of phase options). I added planet waves auto trim locking tuners as well. It’s very versatile which is what I need because I play country, blues, and classic rock. My Strat has its place, and my Tele has its own place. The 250K pots and capacitors are primary things that make a Tele sound like a Tele - even with humbuckers.

We think the Telecaster is simple but in fact when it was produced it was a advanced musical instrument and this was a major progression to the present musical world and opened new doors of exploration and innovation. The introduction of the dual pickups introduced a new world of playing because a single coil pickup is still essentially just a amplified guitar but the two pickups and three configuration setup began the next era of electric music and was the dawn of unknown musical territory and provided the catalyst which all new music stemmed from. This was quickly adapted by many new guitar manufacturers and from the first introduction of the Telecaster the bar for perfection had been set. At that point the music world had no sense of distorted amplification so the single pickups where the standard until high gains began to be used. Then the production of new designs of pickups and body’s began. The Stratocaster set the new bar for guitar standards presenting a tremolo bridge and the most reproduced style of body known as the Strat body which many many guitar makers have employed in their designs. The Telecaster though was the first electric guitar and it retains its same impact to this day. A Telecaster is a no gimmick musical instrument which not only gives the player a wide range of tonal options but is still the closet you’ll get to a acoustic guitar as it is basic and the first of its kind. I believe a Telecaster is a essential instrument for all guitar players and when you play a Tele no matter the age you are playing a part of musical history and innovation. If you can play a stock Tele you have the ability to understand what a masterpiece is and the true respect for the instrument. When you replace the pickups or bridge or hardware from stock it’s because you lack the proper desire for playing because anyone can mod a Tele and use modern gains and sustains to have more dynamic playing and sound but it takes a true musician to be able to utilize the guitar from stock without modding it. When you mod a guitar you are basically taking the true natural sound and action and replacing it with hardware that is designed for more versatile playing and greater response which alters the true quality and limits one’s ability to adapt to hardware that requires more focus and skill and to play without pickups or hardware that are designed to assist the player in their playing. A Telecaster is the single most essential electric guitar that has passed the tests of time and even though it was the first electric guitar produced commercially it still stands today as the most widely favoured and fundamental instrument that has ever been produced and will remain as one of the most recognized model affiliated with electric guitars and has no need for alteration or adulteration and it has provided decades of musical revolution and offered the world what would turn out to be the greatest musical instrument and concept for a guitar that has lasted through the longest phase of guitar construction and will be forever known to guitar players even long after its discontinued.

Just came across your site. Great video, great sounding guitar and of course, great playing ! Look wise, I prefer the Strat but I think I can get used to the Tele. If only I can afford either. Have subscribed. keep up the good work. Cheers.

I like a good telecaster myself. Although, mine doesn't even have a tone control, as I turned a 2012 Affinity into a '51 nocaster tribute, including going back to the Broadcaster/nocaster blend wiring. I, as well, also love them for how simple yet versatile they are.

Old trick on my tele... Switch to the bridge (back) pick-up , turn the tone down about a notch This gives a nice warm sound & a little turn up & you're back into lead mode ☺

The Hellecasters turned me onto the Tele a long time ago. Quite a bit more versatile than most people think.

Hi! I think you missed vol and tone swells that made teles so special. Also the possibility to make whammy sounds by pressing strings before the nut as well. Great vid btw.

You may have mentioned John 5 for metal tele players, but u forgot about Jim Root, he plays in drop B and A tunings and it still sounds good.

Awesome video! I’m looking at putting a Bare Knuckle Juggernaut in the neck of mine and a Cobra in the bridge which is a ceramic single coil perfect for metal but retaining that tele twang!

Tone knobs are super important on the Tele I find. It's harsh fully open but sounds amazing rolled back a bit. Like a filter on a synth you don't want to listen to the raw waves.

My favourite guitar . That's why I have 3 . You forgot the neck pickup for jazz (Danny Gatton , Ted Greene) . Great playing BTW!

Awesome video/demo, brother!! Maybe you could showcase a clean neck pickup sound a la David Gilmour & Jimi Hendrix (yes, Jimi played a Tele too!!), and Roy Buchanan. Greetings from Guitar Norman in Montreal!!!!

Shane, I love the Tele, too. I've owned three - two Mexican, single-coil and one Korean double humbucker. All were wonderful to play and, of course, the tone...the tone...the tone! Switching through the three positions on the p.u. selector makes a huge, distinct difference, too. BUT, for some insane reason, I keep selling 'em or trading 'em for something else that catches my eye (another guitar or amp). As soon as it's gone, I regret getting rid of it and start craving another..... Think I can sneak another Tele past my wife? BTW, I never get tired of your videos. (I've got a 2nd cousin who's Australian, too. I should go "down under" for a visit.)

I've not played many electric guitars in my life, there was no need once I bought my Telecaster MIM 10 years ago. Sounds as good today as the day I bought it.

Hey Shane I'm a total tele man myself great video. I had a question what picks do you use and why? Have you done a video on guitar picks and tone?

Your first reason reminds me of what Brad Paisley said about his signature model. "You don't have to gentle with it! It's a telecaster! It's a cutting board with a neck bolted on!" Gotta love it. Tried and true and always sounds great.

Yeah when I bought my tele it was in tune. Checked with the tuner on my head stock.
