Yeah, the gift card one is very interesting to me because I owned a small business for about 20 years and I sold gift certificates. We had about 40% of those gift certificates go unused before their expiration date, which was about two years from the date of purchase. It was a big part of our annual profit. Free money for us! If people had started trading them and 100% of them were getting used, we wouldn’t have been happy about that and would have figured out how to put a stop to that, like by issuing gift certificates to people by name and not allowing transfer. I can only imagine how giant retailers would want to protect their bottom line somehow by keeping a certain percentage of gift cards unused each year.
@lesley998919 күн бұрын
It's why businesses like gift cards and they gave them an expiry date, which never used to happen
@lululacanuck382416 күн бұрын
A certain bank in Canada offers a one time “gift” credit card that can be used like a regular credit card for anything. However, they also take a percentage monthly, lowering the value of the card if it is not used immediately. They effectively get their money back and you find yourself with a $20 balance remaining on a gift card originally valued at $50. Beware.

I think what Peter disliked was how misleading the guy was. He was trying to exaggerate how much business he was actually doing and that probably ticked off Peter Jones. The other Dragons were quite nice, but their point was more that he didn't really need the money, he could just save some money by not having a big office and renting vans while sticking to Scotland and get to his goal without any investment money. It's ripe for criminal exploitation. What ends up happening is people buy gift cards with stolen credit cards then turn around and sell them to sites like this to resell for much lower prices than the people with legitimate gift cards would reasonably sell them for. Gift cards that can be traced back through serial numbers (activated at point of sale) end up getting cancelled through creditor charge-backs when the fraud is detected. End result is only criminal sellers make money and legitimate buyers get scammed.

19:35 That's insane, I've never heard of a company that requires a gift card to be used only by the first person it was gifted to. Is that a British thing? How do they even verify that, is the buyer required to provide the personal information of the person they're giving it to and then the recipient has to show their government ID when they use it? Also, one of the dragons said the concept wouldn't work because the seller would expect to get the full price of their card and the buyer would want a discount. That's ridiculous. The point is for people to swap a gift card they don't want for a card that they do. They shouldn't get a discount on the card they're swapping for. The seller would need to sell it at a loss though so the site could make money but I'd rather get $45 for a $50 gift card I won't use and use that money to buy something I want instead of $0 for a $50 gift card that's useless to me.
@lesley998919 күн бұрын
Great points. No. A person isn't required to give any details when they purchase it and person doesn't have to show any ID and anyone can use the gift card. Certainly not in person. Maybe it's different on-line, because then details would be put in to purchase the card, but they still wouldn't put in the recipient's details.
