Another thing that we found helpful while traveling, is when choosing a place to eat, staying away from busy and touristy places and choosing a place where local people eat. Most of the times its significantly cheaper and also more authentic experience.

If there’s a restaurant we want to try, we’ll often try it at lunch, when the prices are usually cheaper, and then make a light supper at home.

@@EricandSarah When we went on our latest big trip, we had 1 child (she was 4 years old) and it was way better for us to have breakfast at our accommodation (whether included or self catered), eat out at lunch time and then settle in to eat dinner/supper back at “home” in the evening. This allowed us to take our time and helped our little one settle for the night. We also took some protein & energy bars from home to have on our day packs if we couldn’t find reliable cheap food options & our kid got hangry! Since kids can also be creatures of habit, we also took along a pack of her favourite cereal & some Vegemite- we are Aussies. In Peru & Chile it helped soooo much that I speak Spanish, that my Aussie husband learned a bit too. It was helpful for him. Airbnb is great but the extra fees can be so high! Because we had our kid, we didn’t want to leave it too long without booking ahead. We also took along a light inflatable kid’s bed that stepped on to one of our packs. So often when there was only a double/Full bed, our child could still sleep in our room.

We love your hack with buying groceries too! We usually eat at home for breakfast and lunch and love to go out for dinner but we truly should do it less. So many great tips 👍

For Canadians, the Wealthsimple Cash card is free and doesn't charge any fees for ATM withdrawals globally. HSBC World Elite is a great Mastercard with no FX fees and also offers 3% points on travel expenses.

Sometimes not booking a hotel in advance is a good thing too. Experience #1 - Quito Sheraton was cheaper by just going into the hotel and asking for a room than when I booked online with my CAA Experience #2 - A hotel in Mindo wanted quite a bit for a room that we were excited to stay in because of the terrible abuse we did to our bodies renovating. We should have run when we first saw the little issues because later that night we went to use the jacuzzi and I turned on the jets, luckily before getting in and what shot out stunk to high heaven and made the water murky with debris. So with Experience #2 we should have gone to find another hotel to stay at also really take a look at the negative comments. A lot of times a hotel owner will create numberous accounts to try to change their rating to look better.

Oh wow that is quite the story!! We have definitely had a couple of those situations before too. But we agree... sometimes last minute pricing is great (if you're willing to risk it and be flexible!)
