I had acl and meniscus surgery 5 years ago, and after recovery my knee never gave me too many problems, i went back to almost all of my sports at strenuous levels without a hitch and then boom, knee swells up a month ago and i am flabbergasted! After watching this video i gently tried some of the exercises and i realized i barely ever used my glutes, relied almost entirely on my quads and hamsteings cause the focus had always been on them to give support to the tendons and cartilage. I'm gonna rest properly and then give my knees what they need this time. Thanks for the helpful tips!

I don’t think I bumped my knee. I’m trying to ice and with also try the exercises you mention. I would like the lump to be gone. It’s been there for 2 weeks. Hello from PA, I am going through it right now. I had a work injury almost 8 months ago! I never had any problems with my knee prior to this. I never had any rest for my knee injury and I am a Nurse working with skilled dementia residents and continually walking around or standing up working All day long. I had 3 months of PT, a steroid injection and a Visco injection. Nothing Helped at All except for resting and icing after work and on my days off. My leg actually looked m 13:23 deformed after so many months of walking around on it because it wasn’t able to heal. SO… I ended up getting Arthroscopy debridement of hypertrophic fat pad and chondroplasty of petallar medial femoral condyle… 😢 Started Traditional PT 2 days after Surgery and bye the second week My Entire knee was swollen and couldn’t bend it. Stopped PT and my surgeon started me on a Steroid tapper pack. I just finished that. Still using crutches almost 5 weeks post surgery. Started using your tail gate swing during my steroid meds and massage my quads and around my entire knee area. Now I’m working on my glutes 😊Not my quads because I feel that I was using them in PT and that’s what triggered my knee to basically almost freeze up. I am currently using your videos for a better way for myself to help heal my knee 🙏🏽 Any Advice since I Already had Surgery? I feel that your information has helped make a difference already and I did share it with my Doctor. Thank you for helping Me and others find some relief. Linda

I had to do the same. When I went back to my orthopedic doctor, he was surprised with what I did. He gave me exercises that cause me more pain. I was starting to think 🤔 that the saying, healed patients brings no income in. Hip impingement and a tear in my hip. Injection for hip tear stopped that pain. Now suffering from hip impingement and I’m doing mobility exercises after about a month of set back.

What should you do if you have bursitis but also front of the lower leg is sore, like the shins. ? What are shin splints?? And doyou get these from tight quads and weak glutes ? Everytime I get relaxed with my glutes I get a set back with knee bursitis so frustrating so back to the basics like leg swing. Thanks for all your help.

I love this detailed explanation. Far better than my doctors. I used to volunteer for stray animals. During the feed, I think I overused my knee, which initiated my problem. Soon, I was hit by covid, and not too long after symptoms receded, my PT made me do lunges and step ups. All those used to hurt and pull my knee. So, every time, after that, when I've tried to go from a low seated position to standing, it pulls and hurt. Same goes during kneeling. My doctor thinks it's a suprapatellar bursitis. But not much advise apart from basic exercises and medicine. 1. Can I walk? 2. Can I go cycling? 3. How long should these exercises be done? PT even gave me exercise to go into a bridge and straight one leg at a time; other required bending on one knee, taking other leg forward at bend, then stretching. It causes more pressure on the knee..

Want to tell you something that I came up with. What I do is what I call knee traction. I came up with this because 20 years ago I had traction on my back, where they stretched me. So I decided to get some 5 pound ankle weights, I put them on and I do the tailgate exercise, but I do not swing my legs very much at all . Because what I’m doing is stretching my bone on bone knee so I can get a little opening there eventually to take in hydration and nutrients. And I will tell you having my first knee x-ray in 2008 showing me bone on bone horrifying 😮 fast forward to 2018 is when I started doing it. And in October 2019 when I had my last x-ray. It actually showed a small gap between knee bones! Now I don’t know how long it took to get that little gap but I’ll take it and I like the fact that you can do these tailgate exercises even without weights several times a day to get the synovial fluid moving around nobody ever told me that. I also use a vibration plate which shakes me up pretty good to get the blood flowing. But the knee traction really does help my knee pain tremendously for a little while. I’m gonna try your roll towel behind the knee moves. I can’t really bend my knees that much I’m pretty sure I have a lot of scar tissue buildup.. I will eventually be able to move it more doing that exercise I saw on another video.

@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy Ай бұрын
Hi Earnhardtfan, Thanks for sharing your experience. It's interesting that the lump is still there even though you're not feeling any pain. There are a few reasons why this might be happening: 1. Residual Swelling: Sometimes, the bursa can stay swollen even after the pain subsides. The fluid buildup might take a bit longer to go away, which can leave you with that noticeable lump. 2. Scar Tissue: After the initial injury, some scar tissue can form in the area, which might be contributing to the bump you’re seeing. 3. Chronic Bursitis: In some cases, bursitis can become chronic, meaning the inflammation can persist without causing much pain but still result in a lump. 4. Fluid Retention: Your body might be holding onto some of the fluid from the initial inflammation, which could also be the cause of the lump. It’s great that you’re not in pain anymore, but if the lump continues to bother you or doesn’t go away, it might be a good idea to check in with a healthcare professional to make sure everything’s healing as it should. We hope you found this information helpful. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!

Hi! This is very interesting. I also watched the "how to walk" video just now. I bumped my bent knee against the bathroom sink 7 weeks ago. It hurt like hell, but apart from that nothing happend. No visible bruise, swelling, discoloration whatsoever. I also could move and bend my knee 100%. But a few days later I noticed the pain is getting worse and I also could barely walk for more than 20 minutes without pain. Now, a quick x-ray confimred that nothing is broken which would have been hilarious considering that I only hit my knee against the sink anyways. No acceleration, no body weight invovled. I'm a very sporty, skinny woman and usually I'm dancing 4 times a week and go hiking on the weekend. I generally love walking. Never had any knee issues thus far. The doctors said it might be a bone bruise, but a light one so in a few weeks things should be back to normal. In week 4 I slowly tried to go for walks carefully. I went every second day and as I felt no pain (also not afterwards) I increased the walking time from 20 minutes to finally 1h. I could walk for 1 hour, feeling the knee, but without real pain. The next day the initial pain from day 0 was back and has been ever since. I'm in week 7 now and it just seems endless. I never expected that bumping your knee into something could cause such a long healing process. It's also the longest time in my life I've been away from exercising. Stairs are still challenging, but I watched your video on that and will try that (as I live in the 4th floor with no elevator) and my good knee starts hurting now as I put all the weight on that one .... not good I know.... I will have a MRI scan next week and hopefully finally figure out what is going on with my knee. I'm kind of hesitant to try walking again as I'm too worried it will throw me back in the healing process once again ..... this is so frustrating. I wonder when I'll be able to go back to sports again when walking is still an issue. :( ....... Any advice would be highly appreciated. I'll keep using all the advice in your videos and I keep doing knee exercises at home that seem to be beneficial and don't worsen the situation but I guess that's as much as I can do for now .....

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy Thank you very much! Meanwhile I got the MRI scan results, though I'm quite sure that the majority of what they found has nothing to do with me bumping my knee against the sink, but was already there and might have just worsened now. I really don't want to have surgery, but thus far that hasn't been suggested anyways. What they found is: patella alta, patella lateralisation, chondromalacia (grade 2-3), small effusion (that was probably caused by the injury). patellar dysplasia. My orthopedist was quite chilled and said I get inlays for the shoes to correct the patellar dysplasia a bit ..... but I think proper exercise that can help balance out the dysplasia is also necessary. And I assume the cartilage damage is coming mainly from the dysplasia, but I don't know ....... I'm still in slight pain, but that might be caused by the effusion. I really hope I can go back to walking and dancing soon ..... *sigh* Hiking might be off limits for a while, I don't know...

I realized vmthat I use the quads too much when kickbiking, so I have to reprogram the motion executed when kicking to access the glutes more efficiently. It's nice to see that my conclusion converge with this information. What I wonder is if I can stretch out the quads (,,once the swelling allows me to fold the knees) to inditectly ncrease the range of motion for the glute to pull the leg. I imagine that this could increase the likelihood to prefer more glute activation. Doing more upper body forward Tilt is working well to activate the gliöutes ,but on long runs it's not realistic to have a "bent over" posture , so I think that a lbetter range of motion would be a good solution.

Thankyou for all your guidance. Badminton after not much activity flared my knee. In physical therapy I learned I had no glutes...been building them. Has x-ray. Very little arthritis. My question...my knee can pop out a bit. Surgeon says it's just a groove that can happen. It clicks often when going down an incline, on the right side of the knee. I do have arthritis in my feet. I have high arches. I wear minimal shoe support, after reading , Born to Run. Any thoughts you can offer or someone you can refer me to in NH..near concord NH. Thanks! Jill

Hello I wanted to chime in and thank you,,, im 57 female with old knee injuries that generally are not a problem. But one day I woke up and my knee cap looked like a cupcake, I assessed it to having knelt on it while welding in my shop , but that's about it. I combed the Internet and you tube, but nothing quite described what I was going through. Then I found You! And every single word applied to me!!! Right down to realize my butt cheeks hurt when trying your suggested exercise. You Sir are a Gift From God! And I want to Thank God out loud for this! May God Bless You In His Most Specialist Of Ways!!! Thank you for all you give us out here who do not trust the surgical / pharmaceutical medical field . Thank you for the information! It was super helpful. Do you have any recommendations for bursitis exercises when you can’t bend your knee? I’ve been dealing with infrapatellar bursitis for 5 weeks now and while I’ve had some moments where it seems to get better, it just keeps coming back even worse. I now can’t bend my leg at all without experiencing pain but I don’t want to completely let my muscles atrophy. Thanks again for all your wisdom!

Unfortunately I am so late to be informed about infrapatellar bursitis. I am a software developer and a hobby runner. My problem is 'Deep Infrapatellar Bursitis'. I tried painkillers, pyshiotherapy, knee corsets, and so on. The pain was waking me up in the night. In the end, I found an experienced professor after 2 years of struggling. He tried to take the liquid in bursitis with injection, but it was not possible because the bursitis was hardened 😢. It was not a liquid anymore but a lumb because I did running and overused my knee in last 2 years. I got a cortisol injection and need to rest now, but it may not be a permanent solution because my bursitis is hardened. Now I am going to rest at least one month and try doing your exercises with glute muscles. I think I was not running correctly. Do you have any recommendations for ossified/calcified/hardened bursitis? Thank you so much

Thank you so much Dr for this very useful information. I've been having a soft swelling on the left side below my right knee that comes on and off for a few months, causing much pain. Using ice pack helped but only for a short while. My orthopaedic doc and physiotherapist couldn't tell what's wrong. So they are telling me to do the very exercises that you have advised against doing. After watching your video on bursitis, I now know very likely I'm suffering from knee bursitis. I will follow your advice on proper home treatment and hope to find relief. In the meantime I shall look for a physiotherapist who knows how to help with knee bursitism My question is, can I go for short casual walks when my pain has reduced somewhat? Or when I need to go out to carry out necessary errands? Is wearing a knee guard recommended while going out for short periods? Or should I stop walking altogether till my pain is totally gone?

I thought this was a great video. I’ve had a knee problem but the tenderness in the mcl area has gone now I just get uncomfortable round the inside front edge off my knee. Could that be bursa related with the pes one? I caused my knee problem by over use I think cranking up my cycling intensity too fast. So I’ve been laying off that but walking the dog still maybe a bit further too counter the lack of riding and I find that irritates it too. Is there any diagnosis test for any of the bursas I can look into
