“Why” is a curiosity question, but often comes across as a shaming question. Instead of “why,” I prefer “tell me more about that” or “what about ____ made you feel____,” or “how did you come to that decision,” or “what was your process like to arrive at that conclusion…” Basically changing out “why” with “what” or “how” can create a safer environment and lead to a Deeper connection and story.

1. Tell me about a time when... 2. Mirror your guest by repeating the last few words of his or her statement. 3. How or what were you feeling in this moment / when this happened? 4. What happened next? 5. Why Remember: be genuinely curious and listen actively. Great questions and very helpful content. Thanks Pat!

Thank you for these tips! I love all of the questions and especially the variety on asking how they felt (feeling/emotional), what went through their mind (thinking/logical), and what they felt in their gut (feeling/physical). Hits the different thinking styles!

Great video Pat! What I like about these kinds of questions is that they delve a little deeper and can lead to deeper conversations, something that I think society really needs. I’m getting ready to start my own podcast so I’m thankful for the information!

1:33 1) Why 2) if you like the story that's being told and you want to learn more in addition to asking questions like why if that makes sense ask this what happened next 3) how are you really feeling in this moment what were you feeling when this was happening what was going through your mind 4) repeat the same few last words that a person just said when they finish their thought and by doing that and actually creating an intonation 5) tell me about a time when

Talking about emotions, it’s so true, I asked a Dad on my show the other day how he was feeling (as you know first time dads are often sleep deprived, he gave such a genuine answer that I think resinate will all fathers out there, he said he’s dying to get some sleep but instead of crying he burst out laughing 😅😂😂 Thank you Pat for all of the inspiration 🎉

I’m finally diving into to Pat’s book SUPERFAN’S today. It’s been great. Popped over the watch this video, commented and then he responded to me...which is what Pat preaches in the book’s chapter “Return Every Handshake”. I’m always thankful for Pat’s kindness, and was very impressed that Pat continues to practice what he preaches. Thanks again Pat. You inspire us all.

Loved this. I've done a lot of interviewing for writing jobs in my career but these questions are particularly great for a podcast conversation. I especially loved the "mirroring" tip. I started doing this with you on the podcast, and I saw how easy it was. So cool! I'm going to try it with my family and friends - get some practice in before launching my podcast. :-) Thank you!

Btw "Never Split The Difference" is an awesome book. One hilarious tip I remember is coming to a job interview with an extremely precise number for your expected salary, not 100 000$ a year, go for 97 879$ for example, to show you've done your research and this was a calculated number. I don't know why but I found this tip hilarious and at the same time I see how this can be useful to keep in mind. Be precise, and ask for what you want.

Golden advice. To elicit stories I like to ask, tell me the story how... Also to get more flavor out of a story, I like to ask "But what made you think you could..." And finally, to add more depth to a story, I like to ask, "But what did X think or say..."
