Hi from a subscriber in the UK- completely agree with your choices. Unless you are wealthy and own several cars, reliability is the most important feature when buying a car. Love all of these cars but due to the stupidly expensive annual vehicle duty you have to pay in the UK, all of these cars are very expensive to tax and petrol/ diesel is almost double the price it is in Australia. Keep up the good work love your channel.

We had a little Terrios as my wife's first car in Dubai, and it was amazing off road and in the sand dunes. Let some air out of the tires and the little thing never got stuck a single time. We passed lots of Pajeros, Patrols and Land Cruisers that were up to their floors in sand and had to be dug out, while we drove rings around them. It just didn't have enough torque to spin the wheels and bog itself down. We nick named it the "Sand Spider". Even after she upgraded her car to a Pajero, we kept it for Dune bashing.

What a nice surprise as i really find all your videos on spot. I bought a 3 door manual HRV a couple of years ago, still happy that the Honda stands out while most of the cars look similar. It serves me well and actually hearing all this stories about limited off-road use i was cautious but it actually really surprised me in really hard conditions and also snow. Since then i even dragged a small tractor from a muddy field 😂 Greetings from Austria to each one of you making this channel possible ✊

I bought a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder SE for $500 and that thing refused to die. The R50 Pathfinder/QX4 with the VQ35DE is one of the best hidden gem SUV’s on the market. It is Unibody and prone to rust, especially in the rust belt, but man it was a good off-roader.

Fun video and good choices lads. The Pajero io are now in rare supply but are super cool, I always get excited when I see one on the road. People seem to misunderstand the point of an underrated video. There's no point recommending an early Rav4, X-Trail or Suzuki Vitara/GV in this category, everyone knows these cars are a great choice with many upsides, hence they are well-rated, and generally more sought after and expensive. These videos help people to consider a model they may not even know existed and possible save a bit of coin. Keep up the good work!

I loved my first gen, two door, silver HRV. Everything you said I agreed with … except I think they look much better in Sport model guise with the spoiler and the wheels and I reckon they handled ok for such a tall skinny car … certainly better than my current 2009 Forester. I made haste down the great ocean road in mine on more than one occasion and that was quite fun. Cheers.

Disappointed to not see a second hand Subaru Forester on there. Very bullet proof cars if well looked after and super-capable off road with the permanent AWD. But admittedly I am a self-confessed Subie simp. Loving the channel, keep it up!

Pajero iO is also known as Pajero Junior in some countries. That is the best option among your list. Others are neither city nor offroad. And adding Kruger and Challenger is a strange choice - for $15000 it is a huge gap from Terios and other small cars. I am from NZ and was driving most of the listed ones. Terios was most terrible, but what about late Terios - the short lived SUV? I didn't have a chance to drive it, but it was not expensive even new. Now I am on my third Subaru - Forester, got it just in time new for $37000 two years ago as ex-demo with 900km on odometer.

Hi guys! I really think that the Nissan T30 (X-trail) and it's mechanical sibling, the Renault Duster (available everywhere else but the USA and Australia) should've been on this list. They are way more capable than the Honda CR-V, and well within budget. Cheers! LE: and as someone said below, first gen RAV4 also should've been here.
@TomS-ho6td2 жыл бұрын
T30 I agree with , Had one of them found its limits off road and decided best not to ruin the family wagon. So bought an XJ Cherokee for the rough stuff, Damn I still miss that thing. Infact have a T31 in the fleet. 10 years on no major issues.

First and second gen Rav4. With 4 doors, petrol engine and 4WD. Whichever transmission you choose is reliable, but check the ECM of models 2001-2003. If you can spend more, get the 3rd gen with AWD and the V6 engine. Again, whichever transmission you choose is reliable.

I reckon the Volvo XC60 is underrated got myself a t6 2010 for 12k (first car) 160k kms on it has a lot of features more then any on this list it’s extremely comfortable and safe not to mention it performs well with 285hp it pulls nicely only downside is my one doesn’t have a reversing camera as it’s a non teknik pack model but if your in nsw their a lot that are priced well like a 2011 for 13k r design in vic not as many but seriously these are a very nice car and you should consider it.

+sorry dewds but you're wrong about Mitsubishi making the Challenger the first 4x4 wagon based on a 4x4 ute chassis. Toyota did this back in the early 1980s with the 4Runner which was built on the Hilux chassis. The early 4Runners were a two door example with a fibreglass removable rear section. Later 4Runner variants were full steel body four door examples and they all sold like hot cakes in Australia, and spawned the whole Hilux Surf import craze in the 1990s. Toyota made this segment, not Mitsubishi......I've driven both early and late 4Runners and they're pretty solid and cool cars even today.
@mattdebyl88062 жыл бұрын
I’d add the Suzuki SX4. It’s small, light, good reliability and unlike most of the later small ‘SUVs’ actually had an AWD option. AND most little SUVs (unless you go way back to some of these) offer a manual gearbox with AWD. Almost all in this size class only offer AWD with an auto.

Had one of those Challengers from new, unfortunately a complete POS. Power steering failure, steering rack issues , air bag issues that could not be rectified, complete wiring loom replacement, Super Select with a mind of its own, belt tensioner failures. The quintessential Friday afternoon build!! Had its own parking space at the dealer’s service dept. Traded it on a Prado after less than two years.

All those vehicles available in the UK, the Triton was called a Warrior here I think. The Mitsubushi Pinin were good and reliable for the time, most if not all eaten by rust along with the Daihatsu now though, especially in Scotland. Japanese metal from this era had brilliant electrical and mechanical reliability, but in my part of the World the body work gives out on them way before engine or trans are done, although some can last 15 years if loved. The Ozzy climate is so much kinder to steel work (not rubbers or plastics with high UV though) than the UK, you guys actually still have 70's Datsuns and Mazdas going around, ohhh boy did they rust out quickly in our cold damp little island 🤣, you will struggle to find a true UK survivor of that kind here.

7:44 it was one of the first, but I don't think it was the first. Ford, GM and even Toyota were doing this in the 80's and even up until about 1995. It's one of the few that are left though.

I have a HRV SPORT and is possibly the roughest one in OZ. It leaks so badly after rain you need to wear gum boots. There isn’t a straight unmanaged panel on it, it’s currently sitting in the driveway cause I can’t get the bastard started. My wife absolutely hates it - so I have decided to keep it. 😆 it’s the best POS I think I have ever owned.

I totally understand you wanting to include cars that are available to a wider international audience, but it would be great if you could also do a video (or two) to celebrate the homegrown Aussie classics too. Such as the Falcon derived Fords, their Holden competition and even a Turdota or two. I drive a Territory (in Thailand!) and its still a very good car.

The challenger and MQ Triton has had its fair share of engine issues, Mitsubishi have been replacing them under warranty even to this day when they have been out of warranty for the best part of 5 years, if I was to buy one I’d look at an example that has had its engine replaced by mitsibishi.

A lot of these are older and from a time when SUVs were considered to need some sort of off road ability (that usually compromised on road). These days manufacturers have realised all most people care about is ‘looking’ like an SUV, so they’re just jacked up hatches / wagons.
@wheelbarrow012 жыл бұрын
"The Mitsubishi Challenger of 2008-2016 was arguably one of the first to take a pick-up truck platform and apply a 4 door wagon body to create an offroad capable SUV". Really??? I'll happily argue that one. That honour (for a relatively modern day vehicle anyway) goes to the Toyota 4Runner/Hilux Surf which was conceived at least 25 years before the Challenger. But if we dust off the history books a little further, the 1953 International Harvester pick-up range was complemented by a 5 door wagon known as the Travelall, which offered 4wd from 1956 onwards. This was more than half a century before the Challenger, and in between there was the iconic Jeep Wagoneer, Chevy Blazer, Toyota LandCruiser etc - the list goes on. In my opinion, the Mitsi Challenger was arguably one of the last to arrive...

Terios, Pajero iO and Challenger all have transfer cases and some real off-road potential. The Kluger and HRV do not. Any reason the 3rd gen Suzuki Grand Vitara didn't make this list? It looks good, has a dual range transfer case, has 4 and 6 cylinder petrol engine options, a 4 cylinder turbo diesel option, is as reliable as anything else Japanese and can be easily had within the $15k price range.... 🤷♂️
@ReDriven2 жыл бұрын
Great question Dan. Only reason the Vitara missed out is because we wouldn't call I underrated as such. Maybe it's where we are located but Vitara's are everywhere here in various states of off-road ability and are not underrated or overrated, they're just rated and deservedly so. Cracking good thing. - AK

I own a terios, it’s a cracker of a thing too thrash around in, though it has very little power so it needs to be revved hard too get going and it’s engine is spinning at 4,500rpm at 100kph and with the manual you have to be careful not too have in too high of a gear does some damage and makes it loud, not terminal damage though) and if you clutch in too hard (in slow stop start traffic) you can break the gearbox (terminally not fun having 5 neutrals and cost $1000 minimum too replace it, I had too because of such happening)
