Actually the pattern stamp tool is pretty cool thing to have when you are doing concept art, turn on the impressionist mode and you will get some pretty cool textures with custom patterns

I saw an interview with someone from Adobe that actually addressed these seemingly obsolete functions. She expressed that Adobe tries to make it a point to not interfere with ACTIONS. People spend $$ on these and they dont want to cause them to crash.

Pattern Stamp Tool. When I need to paint something like Van Gogh, I create a pattern using the image (define pattern). Choose the Pattern Stamp Tool (PST). Load that image as a pattern, pick a specific brush (I have a Van Gogh brush), mark aligned, and impressionist. Create a new layer and start painting over the image. The *PST will use the image as the source and paint it with that brush style.

I wouldn’t call pencil useless. The antialiasing can be a problem in some scenarios. Its use cases is rare, but you can use it to get solid “shapes” without blurred edges

Yes there's times when the pencil is the goto tool. EG. Tweaking ID maps for use in Substance Painter. Last thing you want is anti aliasing .. so the pencil is ideal. Solid colour. hard edges. Exactly what you need, without having to select different brushe sor make adjustments.

Sometimes I mask some pictures to make transparent background PNG and want to remove some pixels completely, I don't want to see smoothing and averaging of colors on the edges, my goal is to have thresholdy edges. So I use pencil for this. Maybe I can use brush with some settings, but I don't want to bother with it and simply choose pencil.

Yes; I sometimes need to fine-tune edges of masks or whatnot and need to do the same. You CAN sometimes just zoom way in and marquee those specific pixels, but the pencil is easier. The other day I saw someone on another channel talking about using Quick Mask Mode, and he asserted that it is a feature that almost no one uses. I must be Almost No One, because I use it all the time, and have done so since the mid-'90s and Photoshop 2.5.1.

I have been using Photoshop since Photoshop 3.0, not CS3, and have never used the tools you listed. When I first learned about masks, and smart objects and non-destructive editing I knew that was the way to go. I only wish I had some of the newer tools during my work career at The National Geographic Society. Not to alter ,change ,take awy, or add anything to the image, but with color, exposure, and contrast changes. We were not allowed to alter the image to present anything that was not factual.

@@L-8 All the images published in the magazine,books,and other publications of NGS. We partnered with NASA so I worked on images of the Apollo Missions including landing on the moon. I had the honor of working on the Discovery of the Titanic , and working with Jane Goodall and Diane Fosse. It was a great pleasure to work on exhibits with some of the best photographers in the world. Finally the hardest and most satisfying project was switching the company known for its beautiful images from conventional photographic methods of production to digital.

The sometimes you'd want to use the rectangle tool and sometimes you'd want to use the rounded rectangle...and it's all about speed... wouldn't want to be manually rounding or unrounding corners Everytime

I would agree with most of these. However, the pattern stamp does have a useful function if you first define a pattern (say a landscape picture) and then turn on the impressionist option. You can build up different layers using different blends modes and opacities to create an impressionistic look. It might be a niche tool, but I have had fun playing with it in the past. It seemed to be in vogue a few years ago. Whether useful or not, I appreciate in your video how you demonstrated alternative and more efficient ways of achieving the same effect with other tools or techniques. I think in every iteration of Photoshop, they should think about what tools to get rid of to clean up the UI (although you can of course customize your toolbar). Thanks as always!

I use the Pencil to create/amplify catchlights. Set 2 to 4 pixels, hard edge, low opacity. Brush tool blurred edge creates fake catchlights. Set pencil colors to complementary light pastels so catchlight is not monochromatic - using letter x.

I agree with all except #1. Rounded rectangle tool is super useful if you're trying to add a rounded rectangle more quickly for a project that doesn't require some large amount of tweaking with radius and all that fun stuff. It's good to use in a pinch.

Hi Unmesh, These videos are really great. I learn something every time I watch. Perhaps I can offer an answer to your question here...I live in Silicon Valley and have been using photoshop since v2.5. A colleague of mine, Dan Clark, also a photographer, and I used to organize attend user group meetings at Adobe who gracefully hosted these meets at the time in the cafeteria. just as a historical reference, when we would send out announcements for these meetings we were using a fax machine. I am telling you this because you often wonder why these older tools exist because their utility has been eclipsed by newer tools with more elegant function. And I agree with you and do love your non destructive work-arounds. I am guessing that these tools were created by older people like me, who may still be on the Photoshop team and removing them would be an inelegant statement, perhaps even a slight. We are all human after all. These photoshop engineers are some of the most brilliant , humble and dedicated folks I have ever met and I think it might just be a matter of grace and appreciation that some of these original tools are still making an appearance in the toolbox. Rectangle tool added roundness editing in near to cs5 version. before that, rounded corners has to be edited using options and editing by mouse click wasn't available. Now they are equivalent.

The triangle and rounded square tools are there for beginners! I remember years ago when I had to look up a tutorial for how to create a triangle in Photoshop because it wasn't obvious, so I'm glad they finally have it even though it's not necessary. Same with the rounded rectangle, a new user won't understand right away that the corners can be modified with the round dots on a normal rectangle. Photoshop is so intimidating to new users, so I'm actually really happy with how much Adobe has worked to make things more intuitive for beginners. As for the first four tools you mentioned, I couldn't agree more!

the pen tool is superior in every possible way to the polygonal lasso tool: you can pan and zoom the image while you're tracing, go back a step, make smooth curves, and add, remove, and move every anchor point.

One reason legacy tools remain in programs after better functioning tools or methods are added is that removing the code can cause bugs. It is extremely difficult to predict the impact the removal and removal would increase the testing needed prior to shipment. It is therefore more expensive to remove the old function than it is to leave it in. Another issue in programs like Ps is that users can create automated Actions and if some of their Actions leverage a tool that is later "replaced" by a better method, removing that legacy tool in a new version of the application will break their Actions when they upgrade.

That's a lame excuse. For one, as a programmer, I can tell you that the first part is simply not true. Each of those "tools" is a button to enact an event handler mode. If you remove the button, even if you leave in the code for the mode it simply never gets used. This can't affect anything else. As to the second bit, all you have to do is put in a translation for removed tools. Have an action that needs something? Make it so, when run, the action just does it the new way. That said, actions *don't use tools, which is what this video is about*. You can't make an action that says "paint shit here". That's not a thing. This is just useless apologetics for Adobe's shoddy development, and I wonder if you either work in downtown San Jose, or if you just think that saying "actually!" followed by dumb shit that show you have no idea what you're talking about makes you look clever. At one point in time the old tools were the way, as Photoshop evolved they either made better tools or added new functionality to older tools. I think one of the reasons they do not remove the old ways is for backward compatibility. Maybe there is an action out there that uses the rounded rectangle or the pattern stamp. Removing those would break those actions. It is simply better to leave them in and also have newer (and better) ways when they emerge :)

The reason for the triangle tool is that you might not want to reset the number of corners to 3 each time you use the polygon tool. For example you might use hexagons very often and then you want the number of corners be set to six when you use the polygon tool. The triangle tool allows you to draw a triangle between to hexagons without having to switch the number of corners on the polygon tool back to six. The same is true for other tools. It sometimes makes sense to have a tool A for a special case of tool B in order so save the settings of tool B. That can save time.

Dodge and burn are a pre-digital darkroom technique for photography. Used all the time in analog prepress for lightening and darkening parts of photos. Ps has a dozen different ways to accomplish the same results these days however.

Interesting ... I use the pen tool when I coloring comics. It is so that sometimes I need to close open lines, and I do it with the color the object should have. Then the pen tool works better because it gives sharp edges. It does not matter if I put the brush on maximum hardness, it gives a slightly fluffy edge. Which can be a problem. (It would be nice if they had a value on the magic wand so that it could accept a small gap in a line.
